Question by M: Recent college graduate, job search help?
I have been told by numerous human resource departments: “your qualifications do not match those of the applied position” etc.. I have over 5 years of experience in my field in both subordinate and managerial positions, as well as two related bachelor’s degrees. Needless to say I’m very careful to apply for positions that I meet and normally exceed the minimum requirements as posted on applications/websites etc.. Is there a behavior or technique I should be considering or altering?

I’ve applied for positions in with the major casino/resort brands in Las Vegas to no avail. It seems that human resource departments either do not screen applications or simply ignore them?! They allow no in person contact unless you have applied via web server and been offered a conditional interview for screening purposes. If you get that far, there is never a representative from a department present- and most established corporations leave no way to “follow-up” via telephone or otherwise.

Please lend your thoughts and suggestions. I realize this is open-ended, but I am new to this type of non-referral based employment system.

Thanks,
