In His Own Words: Story of a Successful Job Search

A recruiter, Drew Tewell knows how to find a job when he needs one. Here’s how he went from fired to hired in 3 steps. How Drew describes his job search -

Have you ever been fired from your job? It doesn’t really boost your confidence level, if you know what I mean.

What happens when you get fired a second time? I can tell you. It happened to me.

Over eight years ago, I was fired from a job I didn’t like. What happened next? Unemployment.

Over five months ago, I was fired from a job that wasn’t the best fit. What happened next? Unemployment.

Do you see the pattern? When you get fired, not only do you lose your job, but you also become unemployed.

Fired + Job Loss + Unemployment = Tough Times

Having been through Tough Times University more than once, I can tell you, it is not easy.

You may find yourself in the same situation that I was in. You were recently fired. Or, maybe you lost your job for some other reason.

If you are currently unemployed and looking for work, I want to share with you what I did to find a new job. I used this strategy both times in my own life, and it worked each time.

This strategy will also work for you if you are currently employed, but don’t like your job and are ready to make a change.

The strategy I used was connecting directly with employers.

By “connecting directly with employers,” I mean that I contacted the employers UNRELATED TO ANY JOB POSTING.

How to Connect Directly with Employers

Here’s how to connect directly with employers, step-by-step.

Step # 1 Figure out what you want to do.

The first step to connecting directly with employers is to figure out what you want to do. What job or career do you want to pursue? Both of the times I was unemployed, I figured out what I wanted to do next.

Step # 2 Target specific companies and organizations that do what you want to do.

Now that you know what it is that you want to do, target specific companies and organizations that do it. Both of the times I was unemployed, I targeted specific places that, in some way, did what I wanted to do.

Step # 3 Contact the places where you want to work

Once you know what you want to do (Step # 1) and find the places where you want to work (Step # 2), contact those employers.

Both of the times I was unemployed, I contacted the places where I wanted to work, and asked if they were hiring.

How did I contact them? I picked up the phone, and called them.

The first time I did it, I started calling a group of my targeted employers (the ones which did what I wanted to do).

One of the organizations I called was hiring. I ended up landing the job.

The second time I did it, I used LinkedIn to find companies that were doing what I wanted to do.

One of the companies that I called invited me in to interview. They were thinking about hiring someone, but were not in a hurry.

Almost two months later they called me out of the blue, and asked if I was still looking for work. Of course, I said “Yes,” and they ended up hiring me.

So, both of the times I was unemployed, this strategy worked. I found my next job.

You may be thinking, this all seems so simple, it can’t really be that effective. Let me tell you, it is simple, and it is effective.

It worked for me. Twice. It will work for you. Don’t believe me? Try it!

Many (if not most) professional and industry associations offer job postings as a service to members and, often, also to non-members. Since professional associations exist for most industries and careers, they are often very effective “niche” job boards for their fields.

Of course, in addition to job postings, professional and industry associations often serve as excellent venues for making networking connections since many have local meetings as well as national conferences. They may also manage related LinkedIn Groups and offer other social networking opportunities. And, as we all know, networking is THE BEST way to connect with a new job.

Job-Hunt has a large directory of professional associations, organized by industry or profession. In it, we link to the association’s home page, give you a summary of what is available on the site (like a directory of members and/or a career center), and then a link to the job postings, if there are any. Just click on the link subtly labeled “JOBS” to find the job postings. Click on the association’s name to go to the association’s home page.

These are the current categories and sub-categories of associations in Job-Hunt’s Directory of Professional and Industry Associations:

Associations offer networking opportunities even if they don’t have job postings. If you can, attend some of the meetings and conferences. They are not only great networking opportunities, but also opportunities to learn more about the field/industry, particularly important if you are considering changing careers or moving your career to a new industry.

Most employers have websites that support their businesses or their mission/work. Often, the websites include job postings. It is not effective or rational to chase the jobs on every employer’s website.

A smarter approach to a job search is to pick the employers that are the best employers for you. This requires research, initially, but it enables you to focus your efforts and to avoid ending up in a dead end job or working for an employer you don’t like or respect.

So, Choose Your Target Employers

A better strategy is to target the employers (20, 50, or more, depending on your preferences) which look like places you would like to work. Having target employers is a very big advantage in a tough job market for several reasons:

Targeting specific employers enables you to focus your research efforts. It will make you a smarter job seeker.

It will make customizing your resume and cover letter easier – the “right” job titles (those used by the target employer), the right terminology, the right product or service names (those belonging to the target employer), the right contacts in HR, etc.

You can focus your networking efforts to the right organizations, the right contacts, even the right LinkedIn Groups.

Over time, you will see how jobs fit together, how the organization operates, where jobs are being added most often (which departments/divisions are growing), how the organization hires (perhaps who the hiring managers are in your targets).

You can showcase your knowledge of the organization to be much more impressive in a job interview, particularly when answering the why-should-we-hire-you and why-do-you-want-to-work-here questions.

When you are focused on your target employers, you spend your job search efforts more effectively, and you don’t get distracted by one-off “opportunities” you might see in a job board search.

Online Sources of Target Employers

This is one of the places that Indeed.com can come in very handy. Set up queries for specific job titles on Indeed (in your preferred locations), and Indeed enables you to set up alerts so that new search results can be mailed to you.

Job-Hunt.org offers several resources for job seekers to find employers:

Directory of Employers by State

Links directly to thousands of employer recruiting pages. For each state, also find links to local networking and job search support and local job boards, specific to that state.

Industry Associations

Industry/trade associations are typically groups of companies which focus on a particular industry. They often have member directories, which list all of the companies which are members. These are great places to shop for target employers.

Some industry associations focus on a specific state, for example, from Job-Hunt’s Directory of Associations:

State CPA Associations

Many trade associations are national or international organizations which don’t limit themselves to a specific geography, also from Job-Hunt’s Directory of Associations:

Retail and fast food dominate this list of 15 employers, but not quite as much as most of the other states (so far). This list of Minnesota employers includes some famous names in retail and technology which happen to be headquartered in Minnesota – Target and Best Buy.

As usual, the employers, below, are ranked in descending order based on the number of jobs they currently have open in the state of Minnesota. The number of jobs open will vary widely depending on the needs of the organization and the time of year. Fast food seems to be fairly consistent in their staffing requirements, but others, like H&R Block, on the list below, tend to have seasonal opportunities and this is the season for H&R Block (a.k.a. income tax preparation time).

The jobs with these employers are at all levels, from executive through intern, including both full-time and part-time opportunities.

Click on the employer’s name to visit the employer’s job board where you can search for jobs and apply directly to the employer. A new browser window or tab will open when you click on an employer link.

Retail and fast food dominate this list of 15 employers, as they have in the other states (so far), but this list of Georgia’s top employers also includes H&R Block, the U.S. Federal Government, Deloitte Touche, and two major local health care services organizations.

Click on the employer’s name to visit the employer’s company job board where you can search for jobs and apply directly to the employer. A new browser window or tab will open when you click on an employer link.

These employers currently have 12,349 jobs open in Georgia:

The employers, below, are ranked in descending order based on the number of jobs they currently have open in the state of Georgia. The jobs with these employers are at all levels, from executive through intern, including both full-time and part-time opportunities.

Although anything shared publicly in a tweet, Facebook post, or other public social media activity, can still get people into trouble, “private” social media information is gradually, state-by-state, gaining protection.

While 14 states introduced this type of legislation, it has become law in only 6 states so far. Employers, potential employers, and, in some cases, schools, cannot require that employees, job applicants, and/or students share their social media passwords: California, Delaware, Illinois, Michigan, Maryland, and New Jersey.

Several other states are considering similar legislation, and I expect that other states will join this movement in 2013.

The laws and the protections they provide are not identitcal. So, if you live in any of those states, learn how your state’s laws work. If you live in other states, several other states are considering similar legislation, so let your state representative know your preferences on the issue.

In March, 2012, Facebook issued an attention-getting statement that made it “a violation of Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities to share or solicit a Facebook password.” (Facebook outraged about member privacy – surprising yet somewhat encouraging.)

When job seekers and employees shared situations where they were required to share their Facebook passwords, the outrage grew.

In alphabetical order by state, the laws are:

California Law

Effective on January 1, 2013, the California law “prohibits a private employer from requiring or requesting an employee or applicant for employment to disclose a username or password for the purpose of accessing personal social media, to access personal social media in the presence of the employer, or to divulge any personal social media.”

NOTICE – the California law uses the term “private employer” – so this law may not apply to government (a.k.a. “public”) employers.

Delaware’s Law

On July 20, 2012, Delaware became the first state in the USA to make making it “unlawful” for employers to require employees or job applicants to disclose password or account information.

Illinois Law

Also effective on January 1, 2013, the Illinois legislature passed an amendment to “Right to Privacy in the Workplace Act” protects employees and job seekers making it “unlawful for any employer to ask for an employee’s or prospective employee’s password or other account information in order to gain access” to their social media account.

Maryland’s Law

In October, 2012, it became illegal in Maryland for employers, potential employers, and eductional institutions to require access to the social media accounts of current employees, job seekers, and students.

Michigan’s Law

Michigan’s “Internet Privacy Protection Act” went into effect on Dec. 31, 2012, and applies to employers and to educatioal institutions and makes it illegal to require that students, employees, or job applicants provide log-in information for their social media accounts.

New Jersey’s Law

Prohibits employers or potential employers from requiring employees or job applicants to disclose their user name, password, or other means for accessing their social media accounts. This also became the law on December 31, 2012.

Stay tuned – this will undoubtedly change in the future. I will update this page as it does change.

If you hate your job, and want to leave, go for it. But, job hunt VERY carefully! I have spoken with many job seekers who were in that position, and made the mistake of not keeping their intentions a secret at work. It cost them their jobs!

If your job hunting activities become public, you may find yourself on a very fast, one-way trip out the door, with no more paychecks from that employer. In the USA, most of us are employees “at will” which means our employer can fire us for any reason or for no reason. Tough to be without an income but with the need to explain to potential employers why you were fired. Not easy or fun.

Why Your Employer Does NOT Want You Job Hunting

Employers are not happy to learn that an employee is job hunting. And, most of the time it’s not because they value that employee so highly (although they may).

An employee who is job hunting is obviously not focusing 100% of their time on their job. They are distracted.

Another reason, often the main reason they are not happy to learn about a pending departure, is concern about what the departing employee will take with them – “company secrets” like:

Customer/client lists

Pending product or service ideas

Competitive information about flaws or weaknesses in current products or services

Information about the people and the culture that could be used by a competitor

Other key employees

Important internal knowledge (about plans, events, blunders, and anything else a competitor could leverage)

To cut their losses, they often show the job seeker quickly out the door, sometimes without an opportunity to pack up their offices.

16 Ways You May Blow Your Cover and Lose Your Job

If you want to leave, keep your desire – and your job search – secret. Technology is often what trips up job seekers today, so read the list below, to keep your intentions invisible to your employer and your co-workers:

Do not announce that you are “seeking a new position as…” in your LinkedIn Profile.

Do not publicly join the LinkedIn Groups for job seekers.

If you do join the LinkedIn job search Groups (they can be very helpful), don’t make the Group logo visible on your Profile.

If you join those Groups, contact other members privately rather than posting what you want to the whole Group.

Do not announce in any other LinkedIn Groups that you are in a job hunting.

Do not post announcements of your job search activities on Facebook (interviews, etc.), particularly if you have “friended” others you work with.

Do not tweet an announcement of your desire to leave your current job.

Do not openly post your resume on any job boards or other public sites for job seekers or job search.

Do not job search at work using your employer’s network and computer.

Do not edit or print your resume at work (and don’t copy your resume there either).

Do not job search at home using your employer’s assets (computer, smart phone, etc.).

Do not give out your work phone number for recruiters and potential employers to call you.

Do not use your work email address for your job search.

Do not announce your job search in the mailing list for your professional or business group.

If you send out a job search related email from your work email account, delete it and empty the “wastebasket” (messages are not deleted, usually, until the email wastebasket is emptied – so those messages are still in your employer’s email system and still traceable to you).

If someone sends you a job search related email to your work email account, forward it ASAP, then delete it and the forwarding message you sent. Then, go to your email account’s “wastebasket” and empty the wastebasket.

Be very, VERY careful discussing leaving your job with your work friends whether you are at work or at after-hours get-togethers.

Safe Departure (Stealth Job Search)

OK – enough of the “Do not’s”! Here are some Do’s!

You may leave your current employer, but best to do it on your own terms. So, ramp up your activities, remembering that your boss may see anything you post on line (or someone else may see it and report it).

1. Set up personal non-work contact information.

You cannot use any of your employer’s equipment or Internet connection for your job search because such activity will be easy to trace back to you. Establish a Gmail or Yahoo email account to use for your job search, but access it from home or from other non-work locations like the library if you don’t have a computer and Internet connection at home.

(Be sure the email address is not strange or silly. Keep it as business-like and grown-up as possible so it makes a good impression for you.)

If possible, use a personal cellphone with voice mail for your job search. Don’t use an employer-supplied phone because it to may be monitored (as well as the voice mail associated with it and with your regular work phone, too).

2. Carefully raise your LinkedIn visibility.

Don’t shift from zero LinkedIn activities to hyperspace speed over night. Slowly and carefully build your Profile, add appropriate connections, get recommendations from co-workers (and recommend them back), ask questions in LinkedIn Answers that support your current job and employer. Remember that these activities are visible for anyone to see.

Join Groups for your industry, profession, and location. And be visible in those Groups, always publicly supporting your current job and employer.

If you are in a public-facing job like sales, marketing, or customer service, having a public LinkedIn Profile will help you be more successful in your current job. So, your employer should not be concerned about your activities. If you are not in one of those jobs, proceed slowly and cautiously.

3. Post your resume very carefully.

Employers are known to “cruise” job boards looking for the resumes of current employees. So be sure to:

Use only job boards which offer you the ability to suppress your name and contact information while still allowing your resume to be included in resume searches by potential employers.

If your employer is small, disguise the name of your employer as well as the names of products and services. Use generic descriptions like “mid-sized commercial bank” or “auto parts distributor” or whatever is appropriate.

If very few people have the same job title you have, disguise your job title, too. It may be better to use an industry-standard job title, anyway. So, if you are officially the “Product XYZ Maintenance Technician,” rename your title to ”Large-Scale Pump Maintenance Technician” or whatever is accurate and appropriate.

Use your personal non-work contact information on your resume so you are not contacted at work by potential employers in a way that could cost you your job.

Paranoia Is Appropriate

Yes, it does seem somewhat paranoid, but on the better-to-be-safe-than-sorry theory, follow these tips so you continue to earn that paycheck until you land your new job. The reality is that it is much easier now than in the past for employers to learn that employees are job hunting. Their attitude toward that activity hasn’t change, but their access to the information has increased dramatically.

Networking opportunities can happen in the strangest times and places. (I once witnessed friends connect with their new jobs at the funeral of a former co-worker!)

Hurricane Sandy is one of those strange times. If you know someone who might have been in the path of Hurricane Sandy (basically anyone in the Midatlantic or Northeast regions of the USA), this storm is a great reason to get back in touch.

Even though the storm has passed, Sandy can be a topic/excuse/reason for sending someone an email or giving them a quick call.

Reconnecting with Individuals

Think about it – have you lost touch with a former boss or co-worker, a favorite professor, friend(s) from the Army (or other Service), former college roommates or lab partners. Whoever in your past you might still have a valid email address for and who you wish well during this storm.

Note: If you don’t have a current email address, check LinkedIn to see if they are there, and you should be able to send an InMail. Or, Google them to see if you can find them in an online directory.

In the case of a natural disaster, like Hurricane Sandy, simply send a short email, saying:

You’ve been hearing a lot about the storm (or whatever) in the news.

You know that they were in or near the path of the storm. (Check their LinkedIn Profiles for their location, if you aren’t sure.)

You hope that they and their friends and family members are safe.

The message doesn’t need to be more than a few lines long, and it may not be read until long after the storm is history. But, it’s a nice friendly way of wishing the person good luck with the storm, or saying you hope they can stay safe and dry. Perhaps you can even make it joke of some sort (e.g., Maybe now you won’t need to rake all those leaves you always complain about!).

Apply this process to any kind of news event, even a much smaller one – like someone landing a new job, changing employers, getting promoted, getting married, becoming a parent or other “news” in someone’s life. Reach out with your good wishes, and reconnect, too!

The holidays – any holiday – can, of course, be a wonderful reason for reconnecting. From the traditional year end holidays we have in the USA to less “signifcant” ones like Arbor Day, April Fool’s Day (careful!), Homemade Bread Day (Nov. 17), and many more.

Sad events can be powerful for reconnecting, too – the death of a family member, loss of a job, or damage to a home or car because of an event like Sandy, for example. Again, keep it short, express your condolences, and see if there is anything you can do to help.

Connecting with Groups, Too!

Apply this same logic, and send a similar message to whole groups on LinkedIn (e.g. Northeast Human Resources Association members or whatever group is appropriate for you), as long as the message would apply to everyone in the group. Search the LinkedIn Group Directory for ideas.

Bottom Line

“Networking” doesn’t need to be hard or scary. Simply sincerely wishing someone well can be all that is needed to get rolling on reconnecting with someone. Enjoy getting back in touch!
