Have you ever been afraid at work - afraid to ask a question or afraid to make a suggestion. Even if you are a confident person, perhaps you had a feeling more of hesitation or worry. No matter what you call it, chances are your answer is yes. At some time or another, most of us have been fearful or hesitant to offer a suggestion or new idea at work. It can also be difficult to ask for guidance, help, or even time off.

Now consider this: Have you ever been afraid to ask a question or make a suggestion with your family or friends? You probably answered "no," or at least "not as often."

The main reason for this is that you almost certainly have better communication skills and patterns with your family and friends than you do with co-workers and others at the office. You've been around your friends and family longer, and you know their speech patterns, tones, style of joking, and so on. As a result, you are more comfortable with them and enjoy better relationships with them.

Comfortable communication equals better relationships

Now think about what it would be like if you could have that same kind of comfortable communication with your office mates. If better communication equals better relationships at home, wouldn't the same hold true for work? Of course it would! Ensuring that you convey your messages clearly and coherently will help make sure you are not misunderstood. This should naturally result in better communication all around which, in turn, will improve relationships significantly.

Remember, though, that the opposite holds true as well. Communication is a two-way street, and good listening skills are half - if not more - of good communication. You don't want to end up misunderstanding someone else because you weren't really listening to what they were saying. Better communication results in better relationships because it puts everyone on the same track. Fewer misunderstandings happen when you are clear, when you provide specific details, and when you are both practising effective listening skills.

Better relationships equal improved morale and increased productivity

Once you start developing better relationships through better communication, you'll benefit in several ways.

You'll feel more comfortable at work, more accepted. Most of us want to feel like a valued and valuable part of a group, a member of something.
With good communication skills, you'll feel like you belong, like you are a part of the office community.
You won't have that fear of stepping forward as much, because as your comfort level increases your professional relationships will strengthen.
Feeling more comfortable at work will make you feel better about your contributions to the office workload in general. There's nothing like the feeling you get from being a trusted and effective team member.
You will find you can make suggestions for changing procedures, or even changing a product, without worrying about what others might think.
Better yet, since you'll feel better about being at work and being around your co-workers and bosses, your morale will improve.
Improved morale, in turn, will help you be more productive.
You won't have that fear of stepping forward as much because you know your co-workers understand you better. You don't need to become friends with everyone; you just need to improve the working relationship you have with them so that working together becomes much more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Improved morale and increased productivity benefits everyone

Good communication is a win/win situation for everyone in the office. Once you improve working relationships with co-workers, you will automatically feel better and work harder. Your co-workers are happy because there are fewer chances for misunderstandings, and now they know you just a bit better. Your boss is happy because the better communication in the office has resulted in happier workers who are more productive.

You'll be thrilled to make that suggestion or ask that question because you'll know that others are willing to listen to you. You know they aren't going to laugh at you or roll their eyes, even if you come up with an off-the-cuff comment. They're going to give you the respect you deserve. You'll increase your productivity because people won't misunderstand you and you won't misunderstand others.

Let's look at the formula backwards: To improve morale and increase productivity, you need better relationships, which are achieved through better communication. It's really quite simple. In a nutshell, better communication is the way you can increase productivity and become a more valuable member of your team.

How is YOUR Cell Phone Etiquette?

"Hey Dave, you won't believe what the doctor told me yesterday" is not quite what any of us wants to hear from our table-mate at a seminar, even if the seminar hasn't started yet and even if the statement is not directed at us.

Cell phones have become ubiquitous in today's society, but standards of behaviour for their use have lagged behind a bit. If you want to stay on good footing with your co-workers, supervisors, friends, family - pretty much everyone you come in contact with, including strangers - remember that good cell phone etiquette boils down to one basic rule:

Use Good Judgment

Using good judgment with your cell phone use can make people sit up and take notice of your first-rate behaviour. Because today's cell phones allow us to do so much more than the word 'phone' implies - talk, text, search the Internet, watch movies, listen to music, review and respond to emails, play games, and more - a simple list of tips just won't do.

Each of these activities requires good judgment on your part as to whether a certain time and place is appropriate for a particular activity or not. That's why a short behavioural analysis is more effective than a list to help you determine good cell phone etiquette on your own. Here are some questions to ask yourself when considering using your cell phone:

1. What are you doing?

2. What are the people around you doing?

3. Will you be interacting with the people around you in any way? (hint: if the answer is yes, then let good manners prevail)

4. Will your activity disturb the people around you in any way? (hint: see the hint above)

5. What is the importance of the call compared to the first four issues?

One example where people tend not to use good judgment is when driving. The answers to these questions in a driving situation suggest that your safety and the safety of the people in other cars are more important than a phone call; it's certainly more important than a text or a game.

You might not want to turn the phone off while driving, but certainly if you receive a call that needs to be handled right then, it would be good judgment to pull over to the side of the road or find a parking lot to complete the conversation. Hands-free use is great, but it's not your hands that are trying to concentrate on busy traffic and the big merger all at the same time.

And what about the business lunch where you are expecting an important call regarding a huge sale? You have a couple of different ways you can handle the situation. You could turn your phone off, but that's not particularly polite to the person who might be using their lunchtime to get this important information to you. You could answer the call and discuss the entire deal for the rest of the hour, but that's not going to be polite to your lunch companions.

Answering the above questions suggests that good manners would dictate letting the others know at the start of lunch that you are expecting a very important call. Apologise to them beforehand and let them know that if you do get the call during lunch, you will keep it short. Thank them for their understanding. Put your phone on vibrate, and if the call does come through, excuse yourself and step away or even outside to keep disruption of their meeting to a minimum.

Good manners are a major component of good judgment. If you are in your office with the door closed, working on a presentation, perhaps listening to music with your headphones helps you produce more creative ideas. If that's true for you, then go for it and 'play that funky music!' However, sitting next to someone on the commuter train with music blasting so loud from the headphones that people sitting two rows back can 'name that tune' is not such a good idea!

Really, a list of rules won't help you be noticed for your good cell phone etiquette. Instead, learn to develop the best behaviour by keeping in mind the five questions. If the answers suggest you might be causing the people around you danger, irritation or embarrassment, put your phone away and help boost your good reputation.

The way to approaches to Managing an Overbearing, Conceited, and Arrogant Co-Worker

You can't escape the overbearing, conceited, and arrogant co-worker. We have at least one in every department. You can spot them from a mile away. They have every right answer, and they have a ridiculous desire to be the center of attention. In some cases, they have a certain skill or knowledge base that provides a level of uniqueness. Of course, they will talk non-stop about that ability because that makes them feel important.

Over the years, I have learned several approaches to working with overbearing fellow employees - and here they are:

Approach #1: Have a concrete agenda for meetings involving these individuals.

People who are pompous and dominating prefer meetings that have open agendas. They want to have the floor, and a non-existent set of discussion points allows them to control the meeting.
Therefore, you must have an agenda and assigned experts who are in charge of the particular topics. Of course, make sure you have hard start and end times to meetings. It's critical that everyone understands the ground rules for meetings.

Approach #2: Focus on the content provided by overbearing co-workers, and not their personality.

It is easy to lose focus on what is important when someone is showing-off. However, as professionals, we must look for the important information contained in the midst of the fluff. In other words, concentrate on what the individual is saying, and not on how they are communicating it.

Example:
"I've been working here for 10 years, and I have been able to maintain excellent standards because of the training I've taken. I produce excellent results because my skills are perfect for this position. The last guy who had this job was incompetent. It took someone like me to meet the quality standards required by the industry. I have no idea where this company would be without me in this position!"

Translation:

This employee has a clear idea regarding industry expectations, and likely works in a department where others are contributing equally to meet the quality standards.
Instead of ignoring the conceited employee, think about what can be learned. He is likely following a process that can be replicated in a different department. Keeping an open-mind will improve the lessons learned process.

Approach #3: Avoid complaining about the overbearing employee.

If this person has any longevity in the company, it's highly probable the leadership team has him on the radar. For that reason, it's best to avoid lodging a complaint. If you do, you are no different that the other countless victims who have gone before you.

The best approach is to show how you are working with Mr. Arrogant. In fact, your ability to lead people, especially those who are difficult to manage, make you an effective leader. In essence, the overbearing co-worker has provided you with the opportunity to differentiate yourself from others.

The lesson here is that working with overbearing, conceited, and arrogant people is part of doing business. For you to climb the corporate ladder, it's imperative to develop the leadership skills to ensure everyone is moving to the same target, regardless of their personality types.

Amy Winehouse dies aged 27

Miss Winehouse, who came to fame with her debut album Frank in 2003, was found at her flat in north London this afternoon, the Metropolitan Police have confirmed.They say that they received a call at 4.05pm calling for help for a woman in Camden. Paramedics were called to the scene, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The death is "unexplained" but not thought to be suspicious, according to police. Sources have told the Sunday Mirror that an overdose of drink and drugs is the suspected cause of death.
Last month, Miss Winehouse cancelled her entire European tour, after an on-stage breakdown in Serbia. A statement on her website said "Amy Winehouse is withdrawing from all scheduled performances. Everyone involved wishes to do everything they can to help her return to her best and she will be given as long as it takes for this to happen."

Friends of the singer had reportedly voiced fears that she was drinking herself to death, according to the Sun. They said: "Her drinking is totally out of control. Amy is constantly out of control on vodka.

"She is rattling about at home in north London drinking herself into oblivion. Three times this week she has been so drunk she passed out."
Miss Winehouse had several bouts of treatment for drink and drugs, the most recent in May. Her 2006 album Back to Black featured a song called Rehab, which documented her drinking problems and refusal to seek help.

In 2007 she married Blake Fielder-Civil, and the pair had a sometimes violent relationship. Fielder-Civil was imprisoned for conspiring to pervert the course of justice in 2008 and the pair divorced in 2009.

The singer's father Mitch Winehouse earlier declined to comment on rumours of her death, but is flying back to London from New York now.
Tributes to the singer have been appearing on Twitter and elsewhere. Piers Morgan, the CNN broadcaster and former tabloid editor, tweeted: "Such desperately sad news re Amy Winehouse. Supreme natural talent, terrible self-destructive addictive personality. #RIP". Davina McCall, the television presenter, said: "So very, very sad. A huge talent." Tinchy Stryder, the musician, added: "My thoughts go out to her family and friends. RIP Amy Winehouse." The singer Katy B said:

Need help writing your resume? Listen, don't sweat it--you're not alone, and there's nothing wrong with getting yourself a little bit of free resume writing help.

So let's get started, shall we? What I've got here are a few choice tips you can use to add some profitability (a.k.a. spice) to your job search, and get that phone of yours ringing with offers for the job interviews you want:

Resume Writing Tip #1: Make sure your contact information is correct. Don't laugh or roll your eyes, this is a much more valuable tip than you'd think. Which is one reason why I placed this resume writing tip first. I've seen resumes with misspelled email addresses, wrong phone numbers--even ones with no phone number! So don't be so quick to brush this aside--we all make little mistakes here and there, sometimes with the simplest things.

Resume Writing Tip #2: Write a clear objective that not only says what position you're applying for, but how you can benefit the company. That may sound complicated, I know, but it's not. Unfortunately, this advice is also commonly ignored. Resume writing with no objective is like a piñata with no candy. It's empty, pointless. Hiring managers won't sift through your resume, trying to figure out what you want to do. Here's a sample resume objective that's clear and even offers the company a benefit:

Objective: Accomplished Copy Editor ready to apply 6+ years of exceptional written communication and editing skills towards supporting the goals of a quality-focused organization.

Resume Writing Tip #3: Your platinum achievements. Here's where a lot of job seekers will a brick wall. This resume writing tip is terribly critical. Dry lists of job duties just aren't enough to get your resume to stand out. You need detailed achievements, and include specific numbers, percentages--details help! They give believability to your accomplishments. Here's a resume writing sample of what I mean:

Edit school newsletter. (This sounds too bland, mediocre. Any editor can do this, it sounds too dry)
Created & currently edit Educator's Voice, a monthly newsletter that keeps parents aware of past and upcoming school events and activities. (This is much better, more specific & detailed. It's a great & unique accomplishment, the newsletter title & purpose is given, and it stands out so much more)

Resume Writing Tip #4: Spelling, spelling...oh boy. Think you can slide by with one or two spelling errors? Forget it. Not even one will be tolerated. Spelling errors are totally unprofessional, and they turn off hiring managers in an instant. They figure, why would I want this person to be part of my team, when they can't even spell? It's a good idea to run a spell check. But don't stop there--be sure to check your spelling yourself. Read it out loud, it might help you to catch more mistakes. And then after this, have 1-3 of your most reliable, detail-oriented friends check it out for you. It's all worth the effort, believe me.

Resume Writing Tip #5: A quote or two, would do wonders for your resume. Ever gotten a performance review you were proud of? Well, grab a sentence or two from that, and place it onto your resume. Placing quotes onto your resume is priceless, and definitely something that will help you to stand out. Here's a resume writing sample of a quote: "Ms. Daniels is talented, uplifting, and she brightens up the school with her beautiful artwork." (A parent's comments about a preschool teacher).

Crafting a well-written resume is not a very easy task. It takes due diligence and effort to sum up your professional credentials to fit two pages while trying to convince a prospective employer that you are the most suitable applicant for the job. Don't let all these efforts go to waste by avoiding these common resume writing mistakes that can cost you the job.

1. Disclosing Unnecessary Personal Information

The purpose of resume writing is to provide the employer with all the necessary information to assess your suitability to a role and how well you will perform based on the credentials written on your resume. Your age, religion, ethnic background, political inclinations, marital status or personal beliefs are not essential to the satisfactory performance of a role. As such, it has no place in a resume. Avoid putting a picture of yourself in your resume. You don't want to be judged by looks but rather by competencies and skills that make you stand out. To be effective in resume writing, include only relevant and pertinent details. If your hobbies and interests do not support your resume objective and are not related to the job, do not put it in.

2. Listing Salary Details and Expectations

Many of us have a dream job in mind. But too often we accept jobs that aren't up to our potential. We stick to jobs that offer stability, or convenience or some other solution. While it seems a simple task to make a resume and send it out to a list of prospective employers, that process is sometimes problematic. For some of us, there is some fumbling and adjustment of the search process till the first job interview calls arrive. So, focus and planning become key elements of a job search, if you want it to be successful. In this article we'll cover those areas of a job search that work together to help you find preferred career employment, and not just another job.

First of all, you must define your objective: Once you've determined your labor-of-choice, compare that to your skill sets, and the skill sets required to perform the job you want to pursue - do you have those skills? The answer requires some self-evaluation. List and review an earnest inventory of your interests, talents and abilities, job experiences and preferred labors, determining therefrom the industries and areas of endeavor that you prefer to pursue. Be as vague or specific as you require. Use the results of those internal inquiries to organize a well defined job search campaign.

Once you have determined your goals, write an effective resume which addresses key aspects of the job/industry reflected in your goals. If your job search goals include more than one job title, create a separate focused resume for each title, highlighting qualifications to match the type of employment you want to perform. Show through the words and form of the resume content where you are headed in your career, what you can do within that work environment, what you have done - as you express your employment resume record. Strive to exhibit your resume content in a way that seems to satisfy the issues a prospective employer may address relative to the job in question. See things from the employer's perspective -- what qualities do they seek for the position? What skills do they require? What issues are they seeking to resolve in the job? Your resume should illustrate an answer to those questions and more.

Professional references become your next interest. A dream job will sometimes require you have earnest, reliable, professional references, thereby verifying your credentials and skills. In fact, I suggest serious job seekers collect written references prior to beginning their job search. Know what a person will say about you before they say it to a prospective employer. A standard professional reference on letterhead is usually a short, non-specific letter-of-introduction with a complimentary tone. Collect them now, so you have them later. As an alternative approach, consider creating a basic reference check document to collect and organize select references. Design the document to identify the date, names of the players, contact details, and to acknowledge it is a written reference to support you. By including each person's contact information, it's easy for a prospective employer to verify the validity and value of the reference, if they choose to make a direct contact. The reference sheet could also include questions relating to job titles, basic job duties, general employment dates, and more revealing open ended inquiries like: how well you did on your job?, how you treated others?, your strengths and weaknesses?, technical or administrative skills, and maybe a short area for final comments. Make it one sheet. One side. Keep things simple. When an individual agrees to use your reference form, instead of company letterhead, you focus them on topics important to your goals.

Now it's time to create a distribution list for your new, highly defined resume(s) and written references. Use that list to start generating interest from select employers that move you towards your dream job goals. Make a list of preferred employers. Use internet search engines and job post web sites to identify job openings of the sort you prefer; also use regional and local newspapers, library directories, State and County employment offices, and other job post sources to find companies that offer the sort of employment you seek. Include all matching employers, even if it seems a preferred company is not hiring now, still include them. Gather names, addresses, titles, phone numbers, job details, etc. The list will help you reach out to draw attention to your skills and talents. Create a comprehensive list, put your favorite employers first. Research each key employer choice. Information gathered on preferred employer firms will help you later at a job interview, to show you are motivated and interested; and to help you determine who to contact at a given company to get the job process started.

If your job search is not confidential, as you organize your job search, strive to network with people you know from your industry of choice, like allied industry specialists, suppliers and vendors and such. Talk about business but inquire about job opportunities. And don't limit your career networking only to industry contacts. Consider those in your community who may have a job lead to offer - maybe a teacher or neighbor, a cousin or other family member, people you may know from a club, church, association or other organization. Don't impose on relationships, but consider your logical, reasonable choices.

Next, it's time to begin to set up job interviews. Create a simple, clearly defined cover letter for your resume. Use it to introduce your immediate value to the company and intention to pursue employment with them, and the job you seek. But keep it simple. Make it clear you hope to set up a face-to-face job interview, or as a distant second choice, a phone discussion. Combine that with your resume. Distribute those two documents to your list of prospective employers. Use whatever means required to deliver your resume, including fax, email, postal service, by disc, etc. It's okay to send a resume to more than one individual at a large organization. Follow up those resume sends with a phone call, no more than five business days after the resume distribution. Keep a hardcopy of your resume nearby for quick reference when unexpected phone inquiries arrive for details about your background.

The defining event in your job search is the job interview itself. Don't leave the outcome to chance. Plan. Practice. Know what you are going to say at the interview. Don't expect you will offer up the perfect answer to important interview questions unless you have anticipated the questions first and prepared for them. Research the questions and the answers. Be thorough. Write out your answers. Writing helps focus ideas. Practice your answers till they flow and are simply stated and make good sense. Use examples from your own employment experiences to illustrate concepts or skills. Have a friend or partner read your interview questions, and critique your answers to them. Don't convince yourself you can do a great interview without performing the tasks suggested above. Don't leave to chance the outcome of your dream job employment interviews. Prepare in advance.

After any job interview, send each person you met at the interview a follow up communications - a thank you. Like the resume distribution, the follow up message could be delivered by fax, email, a thank you card - just so you convey to the interviewer(s) your thanks for taking time to interview you. That message also gives you a forum to briefly tout the advantages of having you as an employee, and your continued interest in employment with their firm, and what you'd like to see happen as the next step of the process.

Follow the 8 guidelines above and you will improve your chances of landing your dream job. Don't fudge on these job search tasks. Be thorough in your work. Challenge yourself to do your best. Your efforts will be expressed the first day you start work at your dream job.

Writing a Resume - 10 Rules to Resume Writing and Getting the Job and Salary You Want

Rule No 1

There are two different types of resumes. You should have both.

The Job Fisherman Resume - Like a fisherman you cast your net into Job boards and hope for a bite. All the experiences and qualifications you have ever had are normally included, just in case you are qualified for something.

The Job Hunter Resume- Like a hunter, you stalk your prey. You are fully aware of the job you are looking for. So your Resume is tailored to that job and that job alone.

Rule No 2

Rule No 2 is based on Rule No 1

If you are writing a Job fisher resume, write for recruiters. Recruiters look for key terms and qualifications that match a position that they might have available.

If you are writing a Job Hunter Resume, write for the Hiring managers and those that might interview you. You know what they are looking for but they might not. More on this in a later rule.

Rule No 3

Please include these often forgotten elements, at the top of your Resume:
Name (Mandatory)
Address (Not mandatory)
A reachable Phone Number (absolutely mandatory)

Rule No 4
Always include an Executive Summary. An Executive summary is different from an objective. Objectives are often included in the Job Fisherman Resumes but also states you are unimportant.

Objectives are usually in the form -
• "Looking for a rewarding career in marketing" or
• "Accomplished project manager known for teamwork, leadership, and delivering strong customer service is seeking to bring those skills to a company looking for an entry level programmer with solid work place experience.
• Dynamic and smart salesman looking to work for a successful company

An Executive summary comes in various forms but shows that you are interesting and important and that the company hiring is getting an asset

Synopsis - This includes your strengths, skills, expertise, experience and accomplishments

Rule No 5

If your education, training and certifications are important to getting the job you want, include it at the top. If you have any high level education e.g. Bachelor, Masters, PHD etc, always include it at the top.

Rule No 6

When Writing a Job Fisherman Resume, focus your resume on the job you will like to have. If you are seeking a sale job, focus the resume on your sales experience, skills and expertise. Do not mix marketing with programming or sales with clerical duties.

Rule No 7

When writing a Job Hunter Resume, tailor your resume to the description and qualification of the job you have hunter down. Include all your skills, experiences, strengths and expertise as it relates to that job and that job alone. Remove anything that does not relate to the Job you have tracked down.

Now a question would come up as it relates to job history. If you have a total of 16 years working experience but only 3 years experience in the job you want, include your 16 years experience as it relates to the job you want. No experience is should ever be lost.

Rule No 8

Always use action words. You want your prospective employers to see you as an indispensable asset. Your resume should state what you have accomplished. You want to create a vivid impression in the minds of your prospective employers.

Rule No 9

Your prospective employers need you to solve a problem for them. It is important that you identify and anticipate the full range of needs each employer faces and is likely to face and show how you can solve those needs. Your employer needs to view you as the savior.

Rule No 10

This is almost the most important rule. Aim for the job and salary you want. Understand that employers have ranges of salary that are given for different job titles, years of experience and nature of job. Within those ranges there are other ranges. When you write your resume, aim for the range you are looking for. The words you use in your resume will create an image in the prospective employers mind as to which range you belong.

Follow these rules to get your Resume to the top of the Resume Pile. Having your resume read is 80% of the battle. The rest is up to you.

High Salary Careers

There are many great careers out there that offer impressive salaries but most require years of instruction and experience before financial security can be obtained. But there are other options. For example did you know that a union plumber in Boston makes $65.00 an hour?

It may surprise you to learn that there many such career paths out there which require little to no training in exchange for some fairly impressive salaries. The job title might not be as impressive as "doctor" but the hours are often shorter and the pay is comparable.

One such career choice is that of a New York City garbage collector who's starting salary is a cool 80K. (This does not include holiday pay or overtime.) Of course you can't mind being out in any sort of weather and need to have a strong back and an even stronger stomach to put up with some of the smells, but for 80k I think most people would be willing to deal with a few bad odors.

Perhaps one of the hardest and most strenuous professions would have to be crab fishing in the Bering Strait. It can also be among the most financially rewarding, with a first year deck hand bringing in a cool 35-40k for a few short months worth of hard work. Of course you can't mind long hours, shifts can sometimes stretch into sixty and seventy hour long marathons of throwing out or pulling in the 800 plus pound crab pots while fighting against the bone chilling temperatures, ice, pounding surf and all the other deadly perils that confront you at ever turn, but you can earn an impressive pay check without a college degree.

Biotechnology is a technology that made its public debut about 20 years ago and has been a growing field ever since. It is basically a manipulation of chemicals to produce certain responses and reactions to solve specific problems. This is a very high paying field that does require a minimum of 2 years education for a basic tech position and much more for the more complex positions. The reward is substantial with salaries commencing at around 60k and reaching 170k and beyond.

Massage therapy is another great option and is very flexible and highly rewarding. To become a LMT you do need to go to school for a minimum of 500 hours at an average of $1,000 per 100 credit hours (relatively short and much less expensive when compared to many other health industry choices)You must also take both your state and national board test in order to practice. In return, the rewards are many. Working at a spa in NYC can fetch 125.00 with the national average somewhere around $50 an hour while some treatments range in the thousands. The hours are flexible and though physically trying the salary also allows for less work hours while still bring in a substantial wage.
