Lost Garden: Ribbon Hero turns learning Office into a game

Imagine Microsoft Office turned into a video game. One where learning a productivity app is a delight. One where the core loop of gameplay involves using and gaining skills in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Ribbon Hero, in part, was born from a speech I gave back in October 2007 on applying the design lessons of Super Mario Bros. to application design. I made the following bet:
* If an activity can be learned…
* If the player’s performance can be measured…
* If the player can be rewarded or punished in a timely fashion…
* Then any activity that meets these criteria can be turned into a game.
Not only can you make a game out of the activity, but you can turn tasks traditionally seen as a rote or frustrating into compelling experiences that users find delightful.

Google Reader Share: Gary’s Guide Adds More NYC Service Directories

Last weekend we showed you how you can use Gary’s Guide to navigate SXSW. This week Gary has added more service directories to his event planning guide. The directories include coworking, event venues, free event venues, and a classifieds section where you can post open desks and/or office space.

The coworking directory lists 20+ locations around NYC where you can find desks for rent. Most of the listed spaces are located in Manhattan but there are some in Brooklyn as well. Late last year the city council said they would be opening more incubator space in the outer boroughs so look for this list to grow.

The event venues list has a couple hundred locations where you could hold a tech event. Gary notes, “We’ve also compiled a list of event venues which have been used for tech and media events. The list is sorted by order of popularity (# of events). In addition to the usual assortment of hotels, we noticed offices of IBM, Microsoft and Sun amongst the most popular.”

Gary covers events in 50 cities around the world and I assume that the service directories will be pushed out to other cities as well. I’m not exactly sure how he plans to make money from Gary’s Guide but by indexing so much content, he should be able to become the “wikipedia for tech events and service listings”.

Legend has it that when Cortes landed in Mexico in the 1500s, he ordered his men to burn the ships that had brought them there to remove the possibility of doing anything other than going forward into the unknown. Marc Andreessen has the same advice for old media companies: “Burn the boats.”

Yesterday, Andreessen was in New York City and we met up. We got to talking about how media companies are handling the digital disruption of the Internet when he brought up the Cortes analogy. In particular, he was talking about print media such as newspapers and magazines, and his longstanding recommendation that they should shut down their print editions and embrace the Web wholeheartedly. “You gotta burn the boats,” he told me, “you gotta commit.” His point is that if traditional media companies don’t burn their own boats, somebody else will.

Andreessen once famously put the New York Times on deathwatch for its stubborn insistence on trying to save and prolong its legacy print business. With all the recent excitement in media quarters recently over Apple’s upcoming iPad and other tablet computers, and their potential to create a market for paid digital versions and subscriptions of newspapers and magazines, I wondered if Andreessen still felt the same way. Does he think the iPad will change anything?

Andreessen asked me if TechCrunch is working on an iPad app or planning on putting up a paywall. I gave him a blank stare. He laughed and noted that none of the newer Web publications (he’s an investor in the Business Insider) are either. “”All the new companies are not spending a nanosecond on the iPad or thinking of ways to charge for content. The older companies, that is all they are thinking about.”

But people pay for apps. Wouldn’t he pay for a beautiful touchscreen version of a magazine? Maybe, if it were something genuinely new that blew him away. It would have to be more than an article with video and graphics though. (I agree, otherwise it’s no better than a CD-ROM).

Oh, and he points out, that the iPad will have a “fantastic browser.” No matter how many iPads the Apple sells, the Web will always be the bigger market. “There are 2 billion people on the Web,” he says. “The iPad will be a huge success if it sells 5 million units.”

Despite trying time and again, Andreessen’s observation is that media companies have no aptitude for technology, nor do they really understand what technology companies do. The one thing technology companies do really well is deal with constant disruption. “Microsoft is going through this right now,” he points out, “Ballmer is not complaining about it.” He’s tackling it head on. So did Intel when Andy Grove gutted it to shift from memory chips to microprocessors. So does every technology company CEO. It is ingrained in the industry Andreessen comes from, so it is just obvious to him: “You are cruising along, and then technology changes. You have to adapt.” Media companies need to learn that lesson fast. To the extent that their products are now delivered and consumed as digital bits, they too are becoming technology companies.

Beyond the iPad, he believes that all the talk once again from big media companies about erecting paywalls or somehow charging for news, articles and video online is shortsighted at best. He comes back to the simple fact that the open Web is where the users are. Talking about paywalls and paid apps is like saying, “We know where the market is and we are not going to go there.” Print newspapers and magazines will never get there, he argues, until they burn the boats and shut down their print operations. Yes, there are still a lot of people and money in those boats—billions of dollars in revenue in some cases. “At risk is 80% of revenues and headcount,” Andreessen acknowledges, “but shift happens.” You’d have to be crazy to burn the boats. Crazy like Cortes.

Google Reader Share: Silicon Valley Delegation To Go To D.C. To Rally Support For Startup Visa Act

The U.S. needs to be more welcoming of startup founders, no matter where they were born. But the illegal immigration debate is so politically sensitive that startup founders, who create tons of jobs, get lumped in with migrant farm workers and the discussion sort of comes to a crashing halt there. Now is the time for us to rally, though, and avoid this type of situation. There is real momentum behind the Startup Visa Act, and there’s a realistic chance that, for once, our government can do something to actually help the innovation ecosystem in Silicon Valley.

On Thursday 20 or so Silicon Valley entrepreneurs will travel to Washington D.C. to talk with government officials about the Act, introduced last week by Senator John Kerry (D-MA) and Richard Lugar (R-IN), and drum up more support. Venture capitalist Dave McClure is organizing the trip.

The Startup Visa Act of 2010 would create a two year visa for immigrant entrepreneurs who are able to raise a minimum of $250,000, with $100,000 coming from a qualified U.S. angel or venture investor. After two years, if the immigrant entrepreneur is able to create five or more jobs (not including their children or spouse), attract an additional $1 million in investment, or produce $1 million in revenues, he or she will become a legal resident.

What can you do to help? Tweet @2gov supporting #StartupVisa exactly at 10 AM Pacific on Wednesday March 3rd (tomorrow). Your messages will be collected and delivered during the group’s visit to the White House on Thursday. They’re hoping to get 5,000 tweets. I’m pretty sure we can do better than that.

Um, we're sure there's something sensible to be said about this Porsche concept, but we're not altogether capable of coherent expression at present. We want to own one of these so badly, we don't even care if it has an engine. And boy does the 918 Spyder have an engine. A 3.4-liter V8 petrol burner is combined with electric motors to put out 500bhp, while featuring the mind-altering acceleration to go from a standing start to 62mph in just 3.2 seconds. Topping out at 198mph and offering a very respectable 78mpg fuel economy, this is pretty much the stuff dreams are made, which is quite naturally why you shouldn't expect to see it in any purchasable form any time soon. If you do care to see more of it, however, you can do so at the Geneva Motor Show this year or just past the break, the choice is yours.

As Chris Dixon has aptly pointed out in a recent post, start-up culture is very much built upon people's reputation and their word as opposed to the transactional/legalistic constructs of corporate culture. Once the word is out on someone being unreliable, mendacious, mercenary or worse, his/her career in the local ecosystem is pretty much over. Angel, VC, Entrepreneur, Lawyer- it doesn't matter. No one will fund them or want to be funded by them again and they will have difficulty finding people to work with or for them. So whereas this kind of behavior is often ignored or tolerated in corporate environments, the self-regulating "street-justice" of the start-up community is often much swifter.

So if you're just stepping into the entrepreneurial scene, have a listen to the video above in which Brother Mouzone lets Avon Barksdale understand exactly what's at stake in no uncertain terms. You could tell Avon knew the deal the minute Mouzone stepped into that barber shop. Then I recommend you read this post by my friend and colleague Stuart Ellman, appropriately titled: Respect.

Email overload is a pain for many reasons, but above all, the worst thing about an overstuffed inbox is the fact that you sometimes miss messages you shouldn’t have, or you forget to keep in touch with the people who are important to you. If you’ve run into these issues before, a new Y Combinator-funded startup called Etacts might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Etacts is similar in some ways to CRMs like Highrise and SalesForce, but founders Evan Beard and Howie Liu say they’re focusing on helping people stay in touch, rather than on teams looking to complete sales. The service’s home screen features a list of people you know, ranked by how often you communicate with them via Email or phone. The list includes information like the total number of times you’re interacted with each person and when you first began talking with them online. Most important, it lets you know how long it’s been since you last contacted them, and lets you set regular reminders — if you go too long without talking to someone, the service will send you an alert.

To start using Etacts, you enter your email account login credentials (at the moment the service only works with Gmail or Google Apps, but support for any IMAP service provider is coming soon). From there, Etacts will examine your inbox to automatically build out your list of important contacts, so you don’t have to do any work. You can also optionally enter the credentials for your mobile carrier, which Etacts can use to track who you’ve talked to over the phone or have text messaged.

The service can use this data to offer plenty of related features. If you tell Etacts which of your contacts are especially important, it can automatically flag any new incoming messages. The service offers a plugin for Google Chrome and Firefox that adds a new button to Gmail’s interface: “Send and Remind Me”. Hit that, and you’ll send the message and automatically add a reminder to your Etacts account. If too many days go by without receiving a response, Etacts will remind you to resend your message (or to ask your contact what’s up).

And, if you really want to pump out your correspondence, you can turn to Etact’s message sending feature. This allows you to build templates of messages you commonly send, with variables for each person’s name. It’s essentially a mail merge, but it makes it easy to manually tweak each message for each recipient — you can construct 90% of the message from a template, and then add a personal touch yourself. You can get a feel for how you can modify the base message from this screenshot.

I really like most of the features Etacts has to offer — it’s straightforward enough that it didn’t take long at all to figure out how everything worked, and it seems like it would appeal to any professional that has to manage a sizable contact list. My biggest gripe with the service is the fact that it requires users to hand over their email login credentials to Etacts. The company only stores your Email headers (as opposed to the full message body), and I’m significantly more paranoid than your average consumer about this sort of thing, but other startups have had issues with this in the past. For example, reMail (which was just acquired by Google) launched with Email search that was powered by its own servers, and then switched to a model where searches were done locally on the user’s mobile phone (so that credentials weren’t exchanged).

Amazon.com is the top performing brand in the US based on two critical factors – trust and recommendation – according to a new report by market research firm, Millward Brown. The new report, “Beyond Trust: Engaging Consumers in the Post-Recession World” puts Amazon ahead of FedEx, Huggies and Downey.

The “Beyond Trust” study used a metric called “TrustR” which as you guessed is about trust and recommendation. The more people trust a brand, the more likely they are going to spend their money with that company.

Amazon’s recent stellar performance during the fourth quarter of 2009 is a testament to that fact. The company saw its sales jump 42 percent over the same quarter in 2008 to $9.5 billion. During the year, Amazon grew its sales by over 30 percent, in what was arguably the worst economic times in recent memory, a feat that pushed its share of the total online retail market to about 13.3 percent.

“We found that the number one “TrustR” brand in each of the 22 countries we researched was nearly seven times more likely to be purchased and consumers were 10 times more likely to have formed a strong bond with these brands,” Eileen Campbell, Global CEO of Millward Brown said in a press release.

Texas Instruments is announcing a new chip set that will allow pico projectors to be built into smaller devices across a wider range of products.

To date, these small projectors have been built into more expensive cell phones and chunky projectors. But with the nHD chip set from TI, the devices can be built into small phones and handheld gadgets. Using the first generation of pico projectors, you can project images on conference walls for presentations, but the image quality isn’t the greatest and the projectors add some bulk to the devices in which they are embedded.

Unveiled at the GSMA Mobile World Congress show today in Barcelona, Spain, these chip sets are the latest to take advantage of digital light processing, or DLP. TI pioneered these chips years ago, building millions of tiny mirrors that were micro-machined into silicon chips. At first, they were useful in rear-projection TVs. But as those products melted away under the onslaught of flat panel TVs, the DLP technology made its way into tiny projectors that can project DVD-quality images on a 60-inch wall or screen.

The pico projectors have made their way into more expensive phones, but now the projectors with good image quality can fit in less expensive, more power efficient gadgets, said Frank Moizio, manager, DLP Emerging Markets business, in an interview.

Gadgets and phones with the new nHD chip set will be out later this year. Manufacturers are already evaluating them for use in a wide array of products, including cameras, gaming projectors, media players, notebook computer accessories and stand-alone projectors. At the Consumer Electronics Show, a dozen manufacturers showed products using TI’s previously announced high-end chip set. Those manufacturers include Samsung, Optoma, LG and Hewlett-Packard. Those new products showed how much progress pico projectors are making, Moizio said.

The nHD chip set can display images with 640 x 360 resolution. The contrast ratio is better than 1,000 to 1. It enables a wider color gamut, is power efficient, and is smaller than earlier models, allowing the chip set to be built into tinier products. The devices can now be 20 percent thinner and 50 percent smaller.

TI plans to start mass production in the second quarter and expects new products to be out within a year. At some point, pico projectors will likely be as common as camera phones.

Google Reader Share: Google Acquires Aardvark For $50 million (Confirmed)

Update: Aardvark CEO Max Ventilla emails to say “We can now confirm that Google has signed a deal to acquire us but have no further comment.”

Google has acquired social search service Aardvark, says a source that has been briefed on the deal, for around $50 million. We first reported on the discussions between the two companies in December. Those discussions have now turned into a signed deal, says our source, and will be announced today or tomorrow.

Aardvark, founded by ex-Googlers, has raised around $6 million in venture capital to date. The service lets users ask questions and get immediate responses from their friends and friends of friends.

Earlier this month the company published a research report that included some key stats about their business:

As of October 2009, Aardvark had 90,361 users, of whom 55.9% had created content (asked or answered a question). The site’s average query volume was 3,167.2 questions per day, with the median active user asking 3.1 questions per month. Interestingly, mobile users are more active than desktop users. The Aardvark team attributes this to users wanting quick, short answers on their phones without having to dig for anything. They also think people are more used to using more natural language patterns on their phones.

The average query length was 18.6 words (median of 13) versus 2.2-2.9 words on a standard search engine. Some of this difference comes from the more natural language people use (with words like “a”, “the”, and “if”). It’s also because people tend to add more context to their queries, with the knowledge that it will be read by a human and will likely lead to a better answer.

98.1% of questions asked on Aardvark were unique, compared with between 57 and 63% on traditional search engines.

87.7% of questions submitted were answered, and nearly 60% of them were answered within 10 minutes. The median answering time was 6 minutes and 37 seconds, with the average question receiving two answers. 70.4% of answers were deemed to be ‘good’, with 14.1% as ‘OK’ and 15.5% were rated as bad.

86.7% of Aardvark users had been asked by Aardvark to answer a question, of whom 70% actually looked at the question and 38% could answer. 50% of all members had answered a question (including 75% of all users who had ever actually interacted with the site), though 20% of users accounted for 85% of answers.

Google is getting into the broadband business. The company plans to deploy its own “experimental” fiber-optic network to at least 50,000 homes, perhaps as many as 500,000. The fiber-optic network will deliver speeds of 1 gigabit-per-second, which is more than 20 times faster than residential fiber optic services offered today in the U.S. The company writes on its blog:

We’re planning to build and test ultra high-speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the United States. We’ll deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today with 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. We plan to offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people

The service will be competitive in price to today’s broadband services from cable and telephone companies, but it will be much faster. Google says it is doing this on an trial basis to promote new killer apps that will take advantage of the faster speeds, experiment with better ways to deploy fiber to the home, and create pressure for more open access to broadband in general. Communities and municipalities who would like to be considered for Google’s service can apply here.

Google owns its own vast network of dark fiber around the globe to connect its data centers, speed up search, and lower its cost of streaming billions of videos a month on YouTube. With this project, Google is taking its first step in connecting that fiber backbone to consumer’s homes. It is not clear what Google services will come with a broadband subscription.

Conway's Game of Life Spaceship Gun

This is a video showing the operation of a spaceship gun in Conway's Game of Life, a simple set of rules invented in 1967 by John Horton Conway, a Cambridge mathematician. Conway's Game of Life is designed to simulate cellular automata. The amazingly intricate movements, patterns, and processes such as this spaceship gun are all the result of four rules:

For a space that is 'populated':
* Each cell with one or no neighbors dies, as if by loneliness.
* Each cell with four or more neighbors dies, as if by overpopulation.
* Each cell with two or three neighbors survives.

For a space that is 'empty' or 'unpopulated'
* Each cell with three neighbors becomes populated.

The usage possibilities associated with these simple rules are endless and new discoveries are being made constantly.

The CLOUD MIRROR is an interactive augmented reality art installation by Eric Gradman of Monkeys & Robots. Live video captured by a camera is projected on the wall behind the camera. The CLOUD MIRROR software alters the images on the way to the screen. It tracks faces from frame to frame and also examines each frame for 2D barcodes printed on attendee badges.

The CLOUD MIRROR then augments each frame, adding a thought bubble to each face in the projected image. The contents of that thought bubble are selected from a set of "tags" associated with that person. Tags come from various sources, including Facebook, Twitter, and SMS data.
