We were juniors in high school, Beatle freaks (still am), and our brains melted being in the presence of the Man. I remember weeping, an awkward, immature 15 or 16 year old, when he played Golden Slumbers and Strawberry Fields. It was the Flowers In the Dirt tour, and it was life-changing.

Never thought I'd see him again.

My wife and I, 23 years later, in his presence again, for a life-changing show. I've loved his new band for a long time now, and seeing them was no disappointment. Stacked, amazing harmonies and crack playing. They're awesome.

The set list? More awesome. WTF – Lovely Rita? What? Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite?? WHAT? Holy shit. Then he played Something in tribute to George. I knew the second the roadie handed him a uke. Tears? Forget about it.

After the concert, I got to thinking about the long lost solo career of Daltrey. Here's a cool track most of us have probably never heard:

The prowess of Jon Brion is really why I'm posting this. I do love Elliott Smith, and his performance is pretty awesome, but Brion, who I first heard of as a guitarist on one of the greatest albums of all time, Jellyfish's Spilt Milk, defies logic. I was sold before the last part, but check out the end when he takes an audience request for Bus Stop to be performed in the Classical piano solo style. WOW. Wow.

By the way, this lost clip - directed by Paul Thomas Anderson!

Anyway, I'm in middle of mixing my third album, the long-awaited, soon-to-be-obsessed-over-by-my-adoring-fans Three. I'm doing the mixing myself this time, which is a first. So far, so happy. 12 new songs which I'm super-proud of. Of which I am super-proud.

Library of Congress Does It Again

http://www.loc.gov/rr/record/joesmith/

A small club in Tulsa. A sparse crowd. Only feet from the masters. A reparte.

Saw Jonathan Coulton and John Roderick at the Shrine, a dumpy, cool local club here. It was bloody brilliant. First, we had NO IDEA that Roderick was even touring with Coulton - so there we are, drinking our Makers on the rocks before the show and all of sudden we look up, and there's John Roderick on the stage, guitar in hand!

Man crush time. Suddenly, my buddy Canyon and I bum rush the stage and leave the wives behind... a move right out of the Rush scene in I Love You, Man. A moment for the ages......!

Awesomeness reigned. Roderick and Coulton were witty, funny as shit, and all around great. Roderick honored my request of "Car Parts" - then thanked me for a good request! [jelly]

When we requested a Chanukah song, a hilarious banter session ensued.

All this for $18 with fees. Oh, what the masses miss out on.

Was lucky enough to check off another of life's to-dos. Neil Young, in person.

AWESOME! Crazy Horse blew me away with their background vocals - holy shit, do they sound perfect. That 2-part harmony on top of Neil sounds so comfy.

Good set - mostly loud, Crazy Horsey jamming with Neil rocking back and forth squeezing out treble bursts from Black Beauty. Some unreleased songs too - the highlight of which was Singer Without a Song, with Neil on piano, during the too-short acoustic set. But he did do Needle and the Damage Done. Here's the set.

The openers were quite great too: Infantree and LOS LOBOS - both were actually good as hell. Usually I just don't want to deal with an opening act, but it was really enjoyable.

A HUGE thanks to my buddy Eric for the ticket. Tulsa Convention Center - weird place for it, but it was good. The last time Eric was there was in 1974, for George Harrison's Dark Horse tour!

Beach Boys @Google

I was working in my family video store in 1990 when the rumor broke, with Rod Stewart-pump-jizz-from-stomach-like ferocity, that the ghost of a boy who killed himself at the NY apartment where they filmed Three Men made an appearence in the background of the movie. We could not keep that thing on the shelves. It was the hottest rental EVER.

Hotter than Indiana Joan or the Little Mermaid phallus cover.

Never mind that they filmed the interior scenes on a Toronto sound stage. (I knew that even back then, peeps).

Read this, it's pretty damn funny. The coincidence in the timing of the rumor? Three Men and a Little Lady was just about to be released. Hmm.
