Things like eating a good diet goes along way to improving health. Growing our own food is not only satisfying, but gives the comfort of knowing how the food was raised, which we don't have when we get food from the supermarket.

But other plants and flowers can be useful as well and not just for food. For example, marigolds are a common flower used for decoration but as the following article shows, it has other uses as well:

Marigold (also known as Calendula officinalis) is not just a beautiful flower, but a natural medicine for many conditions. The marigold has now been placed in the books of cancer and anti-cancer cures, because it has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. The marigold is also able to help in the treatment of wounds. It is excellent in healing burns, stings and impetigo (a contagious skin infection.) It is also wonderful in the treatment of warts, corns and calluses. The flowers are also used in the treatment of many skin conditions from eczema to varicose ulcers.

More . . .

noreply@blogger.com (Joe G. He recalls with fondness climbing to the top of the mountain he lived on and digging up potatoes to bring them down to the market by donkey.

Although he no longer uses donkeys, he brings the same old-style charm, grace and hard work to his business. He scoffs at the plants sold by Home Depot just as he scoffed at previous large competitors such as Woolworth's (Remember them?)

Today, we have no idea where much of the food we eat comes from or how it is prepared. More and more people are beginning to question the sources of their food. We have these concerns as well and want to join in the conversation and to share information about how we can ensure we are all eating healthy food.

A movie about food:

Food Inc.

We at Joe G. Nursery are not poised to become the supplier of all of your food nor do we want to be. We do not have the same wall street mentality that is causing serious problems for this country. We simply want to help our customers who are interested in growing some food in their backyard gardens.

Please stop in and have a conversation!

noreply@blogger.com (Joe G. Nursery.

The splash of green among the asphalt and cement block buildings is run by Joe Galluzzo and his wife of 30 years, Maria.

Galluzzo came to the nursery roundabout. Leaving his home on a farm in Reggio Calabria in Italy about 1957, Galluzzo went to Paris, where he became a plumber.

Ten years later, Galluzzo, a trim man who stands a little over 5 feet tall with a winning white-toothed smile, came to Stamford and resumed his career playing with wrenches and pipes by joining Local 311.

But Galluzzo missed the plants and the verdant earth he grew up with. He said that because he did not gamble all of his lettuce away in Atlantic City like some of his friends, he was able to open the nursery in 1984." --Stamford Advocate

noreply@blogger.com (Joe G.
