As musicians and specifically as bass guitar players, we often find ourselves grappling with performance anxiety. Eckhart Tolle’s insightful teachings in his acclaimed book, “The Power of Now,” present a transformative approach that can guide us in overcoming these challenges, helping us to improve our musical skills and live performance chops. At the core of this approach is the concept of “self-created resistance” – the mental and emotional obstacles that we establish within ourselves.

Self-Created Resistance in Musicians

In the life of a bass guitarist, self-created resistance can take on numerous forms: the fear of making mistakes, the struggle of mastering complex techniques, the anxiety of not living up to expectations or the dread of unexplained stage fright. Such resistance often arises from our reluctance to accept what is going on in the present moment and learn to accept it for what it is. We tend to dwell on past errors or fear potential future ones, obstructing our ability to fully engage with the ‘now.’

Harnessing the Power of Now

Learning to harness the ‘Power of Now’ involves an active acceptance of the present moment, no matter how it appears. Instead of resisting a challenging piece of music or fearing an upcoming performance, embrace the situation in its entirety. Acceptance here is not resignation; rather, it’s about being able to perceive the situation with absolute clarity, free from judgement and learning to be comfortable with the uncomfortable.

By dissolving self-created resistance, takes power away from the negative and will enable you to channel your energy into constructive learning and performance outcomes. This opens space for heightened awareness, tranquillity and clarity, leading to developing a deeper connection with the music and the bass guitar.

Improving Bass Guitar Skills

With the ‘Power of Now’ concept, practicing on the bass guitar becomes a mindful act. Instead of focusing on the end goal or worrying about perfection, you start to learn how to engage with the practice session as it is. This state of presence can boost your learning efficiency, help with mastering challenging tasks and foster a deeper understanding of the music.

The overall process of learning a complex piece of music or a new musical concept often brings frustration and resistance to the party. However, being ‘in the moment,’ you begin to learn to acknowledge those feeling without emotional judgement. Instead of creating a continuous loop of internal turmoil over these challenges, you learn to observe them, accept them and work to problem solve them patiently. This kind of mindful practice not only makes the learning process more enjoyable but also enhances the acquisition of your bass guitar skills.

Elevating Live Performances

Performance anxiety, often rooted in fear of judgement or making mistakes, is a common form of self-created resistance among musicians. It can hinder your ability to deliver a memorable and convincing performance. That’s where the ‘Power of Now’ concept can play a pivotal role.

By anchoring yourself in the present moment, you will let go of the fear associated with potential future errors and past mistakes. This allows you to connect better with your music, your bass and your audience. The music flows more naturally when you are not restricting it with anxiety and fear.

Moreover, being fully present on stage means you are in sync with your band members, locked into their rhythm and dynamics of the performance. This synchronisation not only leads to a better overall performance but it also enhances the musical experience for your audience.

Conclusion

Eckhart Tolle’s “The Power of Now” offers bass guitarists a transformative path towards overcoming your own self-created resistance. By embracing the present moment, you can enhance your learning process, elevate your performing skills and profoundly make the connection with your audience. So, the next time you pick up your bass guitar, remember to harness the ‘power of now’ and witness how it amplifies your musical journey. To chart the course of your musical journey, provide you with challenging goals and continuous improvement with your bass playing on an exponential level, CLICK HERE!

Hello future bass masters! Let’s cut through the noise, shall we? Becoming proficient with the bass guitar isn’t a walk in the park. If you think it’s just about practicing a couple of times a week, I’ve got some ocean front property in Arizona to sell you.

What I’m here to discuss is a simple yet remarkable potent concept called Layered Goals. Drawn from the insights of “Will It Make the Boat Go Faster?”, utilising the concepts from the Olympic rowing team, this book has revolutionised team dynamics in the business world. But how does it play out for us, the bass guitarists? Time for a reality check.

Firstly, toss any fanciful illusions of overnight success out the window. If you believe that playing a couple repetitive groovy riffs constitutes mastery, then you’re way off the mark. The path to bass guitar proficiency requires a well-structured, purpose-driven approach. Enter Layered Goals.

Simply put, Layered Goals is about breaking down your ultimate goal – mastering the bass guitar – into smaller, manageable, sequential objectives. Each layer serves as a stepping-stone, guiding you towards the summit, each contributing to our bass-centric version of the Olympic rower’s question: “Will It Make the Bass Play Better.”

The initial layer, what I term the “Destination Goals,” comprises clear, specific and measurable outcomes you aspire to improve as an improvising bassist. Typically associated with more big-picture thinking, this is where you create your roadmap to get past initial obstacles with the goals you set for yourself. In this phase, the investment of time and resources is more strategic. In my books, PDFs and courses, you’ll find ample guidance on this concept among others.

The second layer is the “wax on, wax off” stage – not glamorous, but irreplaceable. It entails a more focused investment of time and resources to improve specific aspects of your musical performance, be it honing your understanding of arpeggios and scales, blueprinting musical concepts through repetition and transitioning from key to key. I like to label these as “Performance Goals,” which are primarily short-term objectives. My resources offer comprehensive breakdowns of this stage, aiding your growth exponentially.

The third layer, or “Processing Goals,” is the turning point where the exercises translate into art and music begins to flow! Here, you want to spend time converting concepts to fit into musical scenarios. Don’t listen to the naysayers claiming that practice can’t be applied to the music you want to play – that’s absurd. Why practice something you can’t use? The challenge lies in this layer’s demand for a creative or tactical investment of time and resources, often overlooked by many bass teachers. This neglect often leaves students stuck practicing scales and arpeggios without incorporating them into their performances. My YouTube Masterclasses and accompanying PDFs provide detailed breakdowns and live demonstrations to combat this issue.

The beauty of layered goals lies in the clarity and tangible progression they offer. This isn’t a shortcut to becoming a better bass player; it’s about becoming a better bass player the right way! Each layer builds on the previous one creating a clear trajectory from the practice room to the concert stage.

Let’s not avoid the inevitable. Yes, there will be obstacles. Days when your bass guitar seems to be a foe rather than a friend. But remember, the road to mastery is paved with broken strings and calloused fingers. Embrace it, own it and learn to live with it!

Stop practicing aimlessly and hoping for a miracle. Define your layered goals, focus your efforts and consistently ask the question, “Will It Make the Bass Play Better?” With discipline, tenacity and a reality check in hand, you’ll gradually evolve from a novice to a pro.

Remember, as Kurt Vonnegut wisely observed, “We have to be continually jumping off cliffs and developing our wings on the way down.” So, don’t just blend into the background; stand out because you chose to pursue mastery with audacity, intention and clarity.

Harness the transformative power of Layered Goals by arming yourself with the right tools and resources – my books, YouTube Masterclass PDFs and/or courses – and make the bass play better! It’s your turn to take the leap! Step into the spotlight with confidence, finesse and a masterfully played bass guitar echoing your name. Master the bass, master the music. The stage is yours!

Ex Vietnam veteran and prisoner of war, Admiral James Stockdale’s philosophy, dubbed the Stockdale Paradox, might seem like an unlikely source of wisdom for musicians, but its core tenets can serve as a powerful catalyst for achieving greatness in the world of music. As a business owner, I’ve seen how the Stockdale Paradox has helped businesses face challenges and succeed and believe its principles can be applied to musicians seeking to elevate their craft. In this article, we’ll explore how you can harness the power of the Stockdale Paradox to become a musical force to be reckoned with.

Unwavering Belief: Your Ticket to Musical Mastery

If you’re serious about succeeding as a musician, you need an unshakable belief in your ability to succeed. Optimism is the fuel that will drive you forward, helping you to push through the inevitable obstacles and setbacks that every musician encounters. By keeping your eyes on the prize and maintaining steadfast belief in your eventual triumph, you’ll find the motivation to continue to dedicate yourself to ongoing practice, creativity and self-development.

Facing the Music: Embrace the Ugly Truth

Now, let’s get real! Along with an unwavering belief in your future success, you must also face the harsh realities of your current skill level. This means taking a cold, hard look at your weaknesses, the limitations you have with the instrument and getting a grip on the competition that is all around you. Learn to embrace the brutal honesty and use it in your favour to create a realistic, achievable plan for continuous improvement.

For instance, if you realise your sense of rhythm is as shaky as a house of cards, don’t bury your head in the sand and wallow in a world of self-pity. Instead, take decisive action: start practicing so you are able to hear how the rhythmic subdivisions of a groove fall in line with the underlying pulse of the music. You just may need to get a qualified mentor who can whip you into shape!

The Musician’s Journey: A Symphony of Growth

When you apply the Stockdale Paradox to your musical aspirations, you are embarking on an epic journey of continuous improvement. Unyielding faith in your future success, combined with a brutally honest assessment of your current abilities, will create a growth mindset that will allow you to learn from your mistakes, develop new skills and tackle new challenges head-on.

This mindset will inspire you to set achievable goals, actively be open to feedback and embrace childlike curiosity to explore experimentation. And while true musical mastery is no easy feat, you start to understand that it takes time, dedication and patience to fully realise your true musical potential. Remember – keep your focused concentration on incremental progress and learn to embrace all the small victories along the journey.

Conclusion

The Stockdale Paradox, with its powerful blend of optimism and brutal honesty, can serve to propel musicians to new and unchartered heights in their musical artistry. By adopting this philosophy, you will learn to cultivate resilience, confront challenges and embrace the journey of continuous improvement. Take it from me – if you want to improve your bass playing and be levels above the rest, the Stockdale Paradox could be your secret weapon for achieving your best performances!

Doug Rauch was a legendary bass player who left an indelible mark on the world of music. As a bassist, I’ve always been in awe of his exceptional talent and unique style that he brought to the table. He was a virtuoso who had the ability to blend his technical proficiency with a deep understanding of the groove, while equally contributing to the harmonic and melodic aspects of the music he was playing. His contributions to

jazz-fusion and funk have been nothing short of remarkable and his impact on my playing cannot be overstated enough.

Even though Doug sadly passed away in 1979 – at only 29 years old – he was known for working with some of the biggest names in the business, including Santana, John McLaughlin, Lenny White and Billy Cobham. His tenure with Santana was particularly significant as he was part of the iconic band during its most innovative and creative musical period. He played on several of their classic albums including “Caravanserai”, “Welcome” and “Lotus.” His contributions to these albums were essential to their success and helped to establish Santana as one of the leading voices in the fusion genre. This was followed up by playing on the classic collaboration between John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana entitled, “Love, Devotion & Surrender” which was dedicated to John Coltrane.

In addition to his flexibility with traditional playing styles, Rauch was also known for his skill as a slap bass player. He was one of the early pioneers of this style and his playing was both technically developed and musically accomplished. His ability to incorporate the slap bass style into his playing added a new dimension to his already list of impressive abilities and he was always able to blend his technical prowess along with his exceptional musicianship. He had a unique way of playing that was both supportive and soloistic at the same time and always seemed to find the perfect balance between the two, while effortlessly switching between jazz, rock, funk and Latin grooves.

In addition to his work with Santana, Doug Rauch was also an important member of Lenny White’s jazz-fusion band. Lenny was one of the most innovative drummers of the 70’s and Doug’s playing was the perfect compliment to his style. The two of them had a telepathic connection and their playing was always in perfect sync. Together, they created one of the most unique rhythm sections that became an important part of the 70s jazz-fusion scene, which was well documented on the track “Chicken Fried Steak”, from the iconic Lenny White album, “Venusian Summer.”

Doug also had the opportunity to play with another jazz-fusion legend, drummer Billy Cobham. This collaboration can be heard on the album “Life & Times”, which was a landmark release in the fusion world. One of the highlights of “Life & Times” is the track “On a Natural High,” which showcase’s Doug’s slap bass playing. His groove was in full display and created a vibe that was both energetic, musical and other worldly for the time. His playing on this track was a testament to his mastery of the bass guitar and his ability to always bring new ideas to the table. Remember, this was 1976! You will definitely hear that many bass players such as Stanley Clarke, Alphonso Johnson and Marcus Miller were influenced by Doug’s playing.

Doug’s influence on my own playing cannot be overstated. I always admired his ability to create a solid foundation for the rest of the band to build on while still making his own parts an integral part of the music. Over the years, I have incorporated many of his techniques and ideas into my own playing and can honestly say that his influence has had a profound impact on my bass playing.

All in all, Doug Rauch was a true legend in the world of bass playing. His exceptional talent and unique style made him one of the most sought-after bassists of his generation, although it was short lived due to his untimely passing. His contributions to the music will always be remembered and his impact on my playing will never be forgotten. Doug may no longer be with us, but his legacy will live on through the music that he helped to create.

There are two main approaches to improvising over a set of chord changes:

Harmonic Specificity:

Playing on the chords in question, paying close attention to resolving on chord tones and tensions of the specific chords you are playing on while employing embellishments such as chromatic approach notes, diatonic approach notes and scalar passing tones.

Key Area Overview:

Playing over a set of chord changes in relation to the tonic of the key area- this concept lends itself to applying pentatonic and blues scale ideas.

Experienced improvisers will move in and out with these two principles dynamically to enhance the shape and contour of their improvisation.

What most people refer to as the Blues scale is actually called the Minor Blues scale. The Minor Blues scale and the Minor Pentatonic scale are closely related because the Blues scale has the same notes as the Pentatonic with an added chromatic note between the 4th and the 5th.

Another way to look at the Blues scale is from the major perspective. The Major Blues scale is exactly the same as the Major Pentatonic scale with an added chromatic tone between the 2nd and the 3rd. This resembles a double chromatic approach note from below the 3rd.

The pentatonic and the blues scales share the same relative concept that the major scale and its relative minor scale. The C Major Blues/Pentatonic scales has the same notes in it as the A Minor Blues/Pentatonic scales:

The application for applying the blues and pentatonic to the overall key area is straightforward- Major Pentatonic and Blues scales (along with relative minor) for major key areas and Minor Pentatonic and Blues scales (along with relative major) for minor key areas. If you are applying these scales over a song form such as the 12 bar Blues progression (which is based on dominant 7th chords), you can also apply the parallel Minor Pentatonic and Blues scales to outline the overall key area:

Until next time…

In the previous two articles on the Beginner’s Bass Principles, we have started the process of removing the barrier that stands between what you hear in your head and what you hear on the bass guitar. We have learned that to develop the ability to play at the speed of thought, you first have to learn to slow down. Because of that, we started to breakdown a simple one octave scale and discovered that in order to play what you want to play, is all about developing a command of knowing what not to play. So, to successfully take it to the next step, we’re going to look at a new concept called Parallel Relationships.

As a beginner, when beginning to look at scales and presented with the task of learning every scale in every key can be a daunting prospect to say the least. The problem is that the task at hand is framed incorrectly. Let’s take a look at a C major scale that fits over a Cmaj7 chord:

After learning this scale, most people will commit it to memory and move on to the next task, let’s say learning a scale that fits over a Cmin7 chord. Do we start all over again? No! What we want to do is understand what we have to do to alter the scale that we have already learned so that it fits over a Cmin7 chord. So, how do we tackle this? First, spell out a Cmin7 (C-Eb-G-Bb). This is important because the chord has to be in the scale that fits over the chord. Once you’ve done this, then see if there are any notes in the chord that are not in the scale. The answer is yes- Eb and Bb. So, all you have to do is alter the “E” in the major scale to “Eb” and the “B” in the major scale to “Bb”. This creates what is called the Dorian mode:

As you can see, you haven’t struggled learning a completely new scale, but rather just had to alter two notes of a scale you already knew. Because both these scales start from the same note, this is known as a Parallel Relationship. In fact, when learning to play both of these scales in this way from the same root note will help you to really hear the difference between these two scales.

As you can see, accelerated learning is not so much about learning lots of new things all at once, but rather learning to build on the skills that you already know. If you are a beginner looking to improve your bass playing or simply somebody who wants to learn how to teach beginners, then please check out my Bass Foundation Course.
