#Repost @island_life_252 with @repostapp. ・・・ This was just one of those things that happens in your life that makes you realize how crazy this can be... Last Memorial Day when I was working I found a bottle that washed up at Kitty Hawk Pier there was a number inside to call so I did it was just thrown off the beach in Nags Head the day before. So I put my own message inside and decided to throw it off the pier, and what do you know just over a year later I get a txt message from someone that found my bottle covered in barnacles and mussels. They had to use pencil to etch over my writing just to read it and as you can see its on a #hilton note pad she was able to read my number and texted me just to let me know where it had found its new home 3346 miles later in Dingle, Ireland! The goal of the Corolla Wild Horse Fund is to do EVERYTHING in our power to ensure that every horse has the best quality of life possible. June 12 was the birth date of our third foal, Guillermo (William). He was born exceptionally small. As with every foal, we watch their development closely – especially in the first few days. To complicate William’s birth, the heat index was well over 100 every day and he was not blessed with the most patient Mom in the herd. He was nursing and urinating, so we knew he was getting something but he definitely was not what we would call a vigorous foal. On the advice of our veterinarians (who have worked on our horses for over 15 years), we gave him 4 days (including the day of his birth) to bond with Mom. If he did not pick up some weight or Mom continued to move around cutting his nursing time short, we would capture both and take them to the rescue barn. Foals are better off with their Moms if at all possible and Mom could be confined to allow for more frequent and longer nursing. The extreme heat, however, was also a concern because the stress of capture and trailering combined with the heat was a serious and life-threatening concern. On the morning of day 5, William was clearly not improving. We decided to leave Mom, take William to the vet in our vehicle, and come back for Mom later. Our thanks to some visitors in the nearby rental house who helped carry William and to another wonderful lady in their group who rode in the back seat with William until CWHF Director, Karen McCalpin could meet the CWHF Herd Manager in the Harris Teeter parking lot. We drove to the vet clinic in Suffolk VA where William received bloodwork, fluids, and oxygen. All blood work was normal but his heart rate and blood pressure were low. A referral was made and we were off to the veterinary hospital at NC State University in Raleigh. William was admitted to the ICU there. Ten vets were assigned to him including a cardiologist and an internist. He was given a battery of tests using the latest technology. Tests revealed that his bladder was leaking urine into his abdomen and he would need surgery to correct this abnormality and save his life. Surgery was performed yesterday and William is still critical but stable. He is walking some and even gave a little buck when he suckled on the vet’s lab coats and no milk came out! He was given a 60% chance of survival by his medical team which is why we are providing him with the best care available. He has a vet tech at his side 24/7 while in ICU. If you are so inclined, pray for William's continued recovery. He is not out of the woods yet. These little horses have an incredibly strong will to survive and we will do whatever it takes and pay whatever it costs to help them do just that.
