Video on the net is constantly getting more popular. There’s no wonder why, it’s easy to get your message across and after all, who doesn’t like watching video? That’s good news for you if you run a website or blog! It means easy traffic to your site and a creative means to get a message to your viewers.

With video you can create tutorials, show examples, create short movies and so much more. I’m going to give you a brief overview of how to host a video on your site and get some ad revenue while we’re at it!

The easiest place to start is probably if you have a webcam. You don’t neccesarily need a video camera to record video, you can get software that records your computer’s screen so you can make tutorials or videos that show what you are doing with your mouse. I won’t go into details on how to create your video as there is a ton of info out there. As well, if you’re wondering how to use your webcam, most come with really good software for recording. As for editing your footage, you may need another program or if you’re lucky, you webcam or other camera came with some editing software. A lot of digital video (DV) cameras come with great editing software, so look for that lost CD (the one that came with your camera)! If possible (if not, do not worry) try to get your video into 440×330 resolution, 30 frames a second, MP3 audio with mono and 64kbps.

You should now have a video. It doesn’t really matter what format it’s in, as we’re going to change it. It’s most likely in Quicktime, MPEG, or Windows Media (or something similar). We’re now going to convert the video into Flash video format (*.flv). The easiest and cheapest (free) way of doing this, is going to either Zamzar, Hey!Watch, or Mediaconverter.org. At most of these sites, you can select what format you want to convert your video into. Just go down the list and select “flv”. The site will automatically convert your video into “whateverthenamewas.flv”. You now need to upload this file to your server or website. On my site, I created a new directory called “videos” and put my flv files in there.

You can now go to AdBrite and login (if you don’t have an account yet, check out my other post on AdBrite and sign-up!). Once you’re in your AdBrite account, click on the top tab called “For publishers” and then click on the sub-menu title that says “InVideo”. Within the new page that came up, you will see a link that says “Add Video +”, click on that. Now fill out the relevant details that it asks for (including where you put your “whateverthenamewas.flv” file). At the bottom, a few of the options have an “Override” setting, you don’t need to click on those unless you want advanced options. You can now click on the “Save and get code” button and you’re just about done!

Now that you have the javascript code, you can go back to your website or blog and insert the code wherever you want to see your new video. If you’re using WordPress or another blog platform, it’s best to upload the code to an individual HTML page or if you’re making a post you have a “code” tab, you can insert the javascript code anywhere in the code tab and then publish your article. On a side note, I notice in WordPress if you insert javascript in an article in the “code” tab, it’s a one-time deal. What I mean by this is, if you need to go back and edit your article, the javascript will be messed-up and you’ll have to redo the javascript insert. If you just publish your article once and don’t need to edit it at a later time, everything should be fine.

I’ve included an example of what the ads look like from AdBrite in videos. I made a small (maybe too short) video of a gear moving just to show you what the ads are like. They’re actually nice because they’re not too invasive and can bring you a bit of extra income from your publishing. Well, that’s all! I know this was a really long post and if you’re confused about any part or need help, leave a comment!

I’ve been reading a lot of blogs lately that I haven’t been to for a while. I think I figured out why I haven’t been back; they’ve gone to the dogs! I can’t believe the amount of crap I’m reading on some other websites. So many uninteresting articles and loads of self ego-inflating dribble. The worst part is, these were high-traffic, very interesting websites that I used to go to for advice. These days, I wouldn’t trust anything that they said…let alone want to read about it.

I’m not going to mention the names of the few sites that I’m thinking of because they really don’t need any more promotion. Funny thing is, so many people still rant and rave about how good these sites are! Why?…I don’t know! I guess popularity breeds more popularity.

Have you thought about what you’ll do when you start making money (I mean money) from the Internet? Did you ever think about how you would change as a person when you started getting the traffic and audience to your website you always dreamed of?

These are just a couple of questions that I’ve been wondering if other people have asked themselves before they “made it”. The obvious answer is no, they never thought about anything like that before they made it big. Do you know how I know? It’s easy, it’s how they talk about themselves. When you start making a lot of money or have a lot of money, you don’t need to brag about it. Do you know why people brag about how much money they make online?…it’s because people are attracted to a lifestyle that they don’t have. A good example are celebrities. When you can see how someone lives and they write about it online, well people want to know details. It also shows a lot of insecurities.

This is my one paragraph brag as I’m using it as an example. I actually do own a high-priced sports car. Not once have I ever pulled-up beside another car and tried to race them. Not once have I snobbed someone who has asked me a question about my car. Not once have I ever mentioned anything about this car on this site or any of my other sites. The reason why? There’s no need to! It has nothing to do with the topic of my blog, and why would I mention it? Yes, you may be interested to know what kind of car it is, how I got it, why I wanted it, etc. but I don’t need to. I am secure with myself, I don’t need other people to tell me how good I am. Of course it’s always nice to get a compliment, but fishing for a compliment isn’t the same.

There’s a reason I don’t have sports cars as my header, link trains as every second article, ReviewMe (sponsor-paid articles) and other junk on my website…I don’t want it. Sure, I could brag about the sports car I own and how much horsepower it makes, how well I live, how you should spread my viral link trains all over the Internet or buy a product that I don’t even endorse because I wrote a sponsor-paid article about it. But, I wouldn’t and I don’t. I don’t need to tell you how great I am, or how you could be great like me.

You already are great. You don’t need to prove anything to anyone and if you think differently, well you shouldn’t be blogging or writing on a website. I’ve constantly seen the quality of blogs and websites go downhill the more popular they got. It’s a common trend and you really don’t need to be a part of it. Remember why you started writing in the first place. Most likely it was to share information with other people. Information sharing is a two-way street, it’s you and your readers…not just you. Keep this in mind whenever you lose sight of where you’re going.

A great idea is for you to join one or even more, online blog communities. I’m going to be looking at some blog communities from a few different perspectives. Even if you don’t own a blog, joining a blog community could open a lot of new doors for you.

Blog communities offer a bunch of different services but probably the most interactive feature that all of the mentioned communities have are viewer widgets. For the most part, a viewer widget allows a visitor on your site to see who else has been visiting the site. It also announces a user’s visit to the website owner and creates a level of interactivity where someone can reciprocate a visit to their “friend’s” site. You can see a couple examples of viewer widgets on the side of this site —> (over there, where you see all of the small user pictures lined up in rows and columns).

“So, what’s the benefit of these blog communities?” you ask. Well, let me tell you! As a viewer, you can see who else is interested in similar subjects as you. Perhaps one of those people also has a blog or website with similar topics that you can check out. They really are like communities, as you will meet new people every day, interact on new sites and just discover all sorts of new things. If you own a blog or other website, a blog community allows you to interact with fans of your’s. I would say the “cut-off line” for companies joining a blog community would be if your company doesn’t update a blog or have anything current to offer a blog community. If that’s the case, just join the blog community as a “viewer” or “voyeur” haha. Some of the blog communities have “rules” associated with your joining, so just make sure you read-up on their policies before you join as a “voyeur”.

There are three main blog viewer communities and one up-and-comer with a similar, yet different idea. Currently I’m only using two of them, but there’s always room for more :P. Here’s a quick review of all four of them:

BUMPzee!: This is an interesting and ever-increasing blog community platform. It’s probably the third most popular after Blogcatalog and MyBlogLog (in no particular order). BUMPzee! has a few interesting and unique features. One such feature is the ability to list how many people are currently online on a site. As a website owner, I find no real use for this feature but it is one of those “this is cool for a day” ideas. A couple other features that are interesting, is the ability to “Bump” articles in a way that is similar to “Digging” an article, and the other feature being the ability to show the most popular articles for the last seven days for that site. Other than those features mentioned, it is pretty much the same as the following communities. At the moment it isn’t as popular, but everyday it seems to be getting more and more popular. I personally don’t like their widget as much as the other sites because I find a lot of the features too gimmicky (but that’s just my opinion).

Blogcatalog: Blogcatalog has a beautifully functional website. It’s very easy to join other people’s blogs or websites as well as mark people as your friends. The statistics that they provide on your blog are a little lacking. I still haven’t figured out how they auto-rate your blog and their numbers for visitors are usually only the number of visitors that visited your site from the blogcatalog site specifically (which is kind of a useless fact). Other than that, the community of users is great and there are some really easy and nice communication tools that allow you to talk or chat with other members. Another nice feature is it’s ability to match you up with other blogs you may find of interest on blogcatalog.

MyBlogLog: I think the best thing about MyBlogLog is that it’s simple. I’m a very technically-inclined person and can understand very complicated things, but late at night when I want to check on my blog’s community, I just want a simple site. Simple doesn’t mean useless. MyBlogLog has all of the essentials that you need or want to see. You can see recent viewers to your blog, recent viewers to your community profiles, recent messages from other users, etc. There’s even an amazing statistics section for your site where you can see what users clicked on, and where people came from to view your site. Of course most people already have these statistics from the web server, but MyBlogLog just simplifies the information so much that’s it’s nice and easy to read. I would say that this is the best or most important blog community platform to join, but once again that’s just my opinion ;).

Criteo: Now this is the new guy on the block and I’m not sure I should be including it on this list but it caught my eye recently. It’s a also a blog viewer community widget but instead of listing or showing visitors to the website, it instead shows links to other blogs that may be of interest to your viewers. Yes, I’m sure you’ve seen something like this before…or you thought you have because in reality this is very different. Criteo actually customizes itself in real-time to each individual viewer to find other sites of their interest and not just related to the current site that they’re on. So say for instance that you normally visit automobile blogs and you came across my blog…well if I had Criteo installed on my site, it would most likely show you links to mostly other automotive blogs and maybe one or two blogs that were similar to mine.

So, if you’re a visitor to many sites and don’t own your own blog or site, I’m sure you can see the benefits of these communities. If you’re a visitor to many sites and you do own your own blog or site, I’m sure you also see the benefits of these communities. And, lastly, if you own a blog or site and don’t visit many other sites…well, you may be wondering what other benefits these communities all have. The answer to that, is traffic! Each of these communities act very well as traffic exchanges. Not just generic traffic, but targeted traffic. Just think about it…whenever you visit someone else’s blog or site, you most likely have an interest in their site or a reason for going there. Whether it be that the site owner left you a comment, or they write about a topic that interests you, there’s a reason for your visit. The same is true for people coming to your site, for the most part, they’re interested in something that you have. Of course you have the occasional people who are just browsing around and curious to find something new but for the most part, people are looking for things. So, the next time you’re looking for more friends, a new audience, a bigger audience or just bored (haha), check out some blog communities! Also, if you know of any other large ones that I’m missing with similar features, let me know!

You get a million dollars (a bit over a million)! Yeah it seems crazy, but it’s true. Try it out yourself, get a penny and double it…now you have 2 cents. Double 2 cents and you have 4 cents…double that and you get 8 cents. Anyhow, you get the idea. Math is quite amazing after all haha. My lesson is to provide you with some insight on a new beta site called Moola.

Moola is a really interesting new site where you can have some fun and try to make some money. I say “try” because when you do make money, you have the choice of gambling and doubling it or cashing out. Of course you’d say cashing out…but at what point in the above example is enough money to cash out?

What happens is, Moola gives you a penny to start off with. They give you this penny by you supporting them by watching small videos (usually about 5-10 secs) every so often. With this first penny, you are able to play games on their site. Right now they only have three games but it looks like they’ll be adding more in the future. You play these games against other people like yourself. So you’ve probably guessed that if you win, you win that person’s penny and if you lose, they get your’s. So now that you (hopefully) have 2 cents, you can move up to the next level. You can now play against someone else with two pennies. The same thing happens…if you win, you double-up…if you lose, you go to zero. This goes on for 30 levels (if you choose) with a top prize of $10,737,418.24! That’s what you get when you double a penny 30 times (in a row)!

Now if you’re down to zero, don’t fret…Moola will give you another penny to start over. There are also bonus games thrown-in every once in a while that will give you extra pennies. It’s a fun website and it’s totally free! After-all, who doesn’t like to play games and gamble with “other people’s” money? You can cash out anytime you get over $10. There are some players that I see cashing out $20 a lot…must be nice! Apparently they’ve already paid out over $3,000,000! Insane!

If you’re like me, you may be wondering how they can afford to do this. It’s really quite simple. Everybody starts off at the first level with a penny. Think of it like this…Moola’s actually the one getting a good deal out of this as they’re getting people to watch small ads for about a penny each. Now all of the money in the game portion of the site is funded by the ads. At no other point in the game are you getting money from Moola - it’s all coming from your opponents who have doubled-up off of other opponents. Yes, occasionally Moola will give you a bonus amount of money but it’s still small compared to the money they make from showing ads.

Unfortunately Moola is still in Beta so it’s by invite only. If you don’t understand how it works from my description, every new sign-up goes through a tutorial explanation with Moola, so don’t worry. The good news (did I forget to mention that I had some?) is that I have a bunch of invites to Moola and I’m sure I’ll get more if these run out fast (to those that don’t get one today). If you want one of my invites, just click the link below and start having some fun!

Yes you read that right, you could be. You’ll be happy to know that I’m not the one spying on you today (maybe tomorrow :-P). I know a lot about Internet security but I had no idea that this was possible. Did you know that you can actually “record” visitors actions on a website? I don’t just mean what they clicked on, I mean actually watch where they moved their mouse and what they clicked on. You can even watch how people filled out forms!

Now this could be great news for you if you own a website…and if not, well you’ll just have to keep an open mind to how secure your actions are from now on. One thing you should always remember is that while you usually surf the Internet at home, the Internet is a public place and you should always be cautious about what you do on it. It’s not just a play area, actions still have consequences, laws are still in effect.

Now, if you own a website, you can sign-up for a free account on RobotReplay and get to work! I want to tell you about some benefits of RobotReplay. If you don’t own a website, don’t think of RobotReplay as a hindering experience. It can actually help a website owner make your browsing experience better in the future. If you own a website, you can learn a lot from your visitors. Probably the most important thing you can see is how people navigate your site and whether or not your site has a good design for what you’re trying to accomplish. Are visitors seeing what you want them to see? Are people reading your articles or are they lost trying to find them? Maybe someone was reading your article and at the end of it, they went back up to re-read a confusing part…you could see that you might want to do some editing to your article.

RobotReplay is very simple to use. Basically they host a JavaScript file on their site that you link to from your’s. They give you a simple code to put into your HTML files after you sign-up and after that you can start tracking! It’s quite amazing that a simple JavaScript file hosted on another site can do so much (that’s why file security on your web server is so important to prevent unauthorized access to trojan files and viruses).

I thought people watching your mouse movements was scary, but then I thought a lot about it. My conclusion was that no one’s really going to see anything personal from you. When a website owner looks back at recordings of visitors to his or her website, they’re not going to know you from another person. Even if you were filling out a form, who cares? What are they gaining from seeing you type? Unless of course you’re bad at spelling haha. I think in the end, this proves to be a great tool to help website owners improve their site’s navigation or other problems and will just benefit the end-users in the long run.

Ok, so I often recommend products or services that can make you extra money on the side. And, often you need to have one company for one website, and a different company with a different service for another website. Well, someone finally has multiple monetization products within the same company! Chitika comes to the rescue with a product that you can use on MySpace, Facebook, your website or blog, and almost anything else you can customize it to.

Chitika’s main product is a content-matching shopping advertisement called eMiniMalls. What this means, is that when you install a simple snippet of HTML in your page Chitika finds relevant product ads from hundreds of online shops to show your visitors. Not only that, it doesn’t just show one product matched to your content, it allows your visitors to search for the best prices on the product(s).

I have eMiniMalls installed on one of my sites, and it makes me quite a bit each month. I won’t say exactly how much as it’s probably against their terms of service (TOS), but it’s in the low $xxx range. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on who you are) I don’t have a Facebook or MySpace profile so I haven’t seen how the product performs on those sites. I have seen it being used though and it integrates really nicely on both sites. In fact, some of the ads I’ve seen being used on eBay look like part of eBay’s internal site so I’m sure the conversion (the amount of visitors that turn into customers) is quite high.

I should say that Chitika’s main product or service is called eMiniMalls and that it is by far currently their most popular product. eMiniMalls is used on tons of websites, blogs and even eBay as I mentioned before. As for Facebook, they just recently released a customized code for your page(s) there. Chitika’s MySpace program is called Owna and is a cool bit of code that’s extremely customizable and can easily fit-in with anybody’s MySpace profile. I wish I had a MySpace profile just to use Chitika’s Owna haha. You can see an example of the final Owna code at the end of this article. I customized it with a spinning DJ, as well as a product, which is a turntable. Lastly, they have a search cloud that you can also integrate into your site that will show all of the most popular product search terms in a cloud-shape to help people browsing for hot products.

So, you have an idea of where you’d like to put Chitika’s products but you’re wondering how you make money from it? Well, it’s a cost per action (CPA) program so basically when you refer a customer to buy a product, you make a small commission for referring the customer. Commissions depend on the price of the product, how many are bought, etc, etc.

I really like Chitika’s products because they’re up to date on their marketing and are always thinking of new ideas. They also have phenomenal support and will help you with any questions you might have. It’s also extremely easy to integrate them into any website and include the products in a non-intrusive way to the viewer.

Well, that’s all! I hope I gave you a good overview of Chitika’s services. Check them out when you get a chance as it may help you make a bit extra money on the side and might bring your site to the next level.

Nah, I’m just kidding, it’s not really a secret. The tools just aren’t “publicly” released yet…they’re still in Google’s Lab, in other words they are still in beta testing to make sure that they work properly.

I’ve been using a couple of them for more than two years now! You would think that they’d be public by now, but apparently not. These tools are useful for many things, but probably most importantly keyword research as well as just finding new things! Isn’t that what’s the Internet’s all about?

First of all, I’ll show you a new search engine idea that they have running. The new search engine improvement shows timelines with your search term(s). You can see an example of it in action with the term nanotechnology. I actually figured out a way that you can do any search you want with the “timeline” in effect. Go to Google.com and in the search box type in your search terms and at the end, add a space, then type: view:timeline. It’ll show you the timeline of most things, it’s a very cool research tool.

Next up is Google Transit. Now, at the moment this probably isn’t useful for most people since it’s currently only for parts of the United States and Japan, but you can see the potential a tool like this can have. When I was living in Japan there was a site like this and I used it every week to figure out the best times to take the trains and buses (and subways). It will also tell you how far something is to walk and how to connect them all. That’s the most important part, because honestly, who wants to do all of the work of computing a route before you even get going?

The next two are great keyword research tools. Google Suggest is a really interesting tool to find new things. Type in a single word of something that you’re interested in and it’ll suggest a ton more options. It’s all in real-time too so you could even just type in a couple of letters to see it start working. Another really good keyword research tool is Google Trends. I’ve seen a lot of people just discovering this tool, but it’s been out for almost a couple years now. So go catch-up on some research! It’s a really interesting tool to compare the Internet traffic of two or more separate keywords. For example, say you wanted to search to see how Microsoft has ranked against Apple and Linux. Just type in “Microsoft, Apple, Linux” and you’ll get this. A cool thing about Google Trends is that it will also show you what parts of the world are searching for these terms and in what languages.

Last on our list is Google Sets. This tool is great in general, or maybe just for people like me who have a failing memory j/k. Basically it will predict the rest of the items in a set for you. The set could be of anything you can think of. Just enter about 3-5 items from the set and it can predict either a “small” set (15 or less items) or a “large” set (more than 15 items). A couple sets of items I just thought of and tested were “sofa, table, chair” which produced this list. And, “Binion’s, Stratosphere, Mandalay Bay, Flamingo Hilton” (all hotels in Las Vegas) and it produced this list for me.

Well that’s it! Hope you enjoy those tools. You can learn quite a lot from them and they might actually save you a ton of time. Let me know what you think!

Do you want to make some easy money? Of course you do! Who doesn’t? Anyhow, I found a way to make some quick and easy money (and yes, it’s fully legal in case you were wondering). A company called Subvert and Profit is willing to pay you for you to Stumble and Digg articles.

Now at first I was worried about being paid to Digg or Stumble articles that I didn’t agree with. The good thing is, you don’t have to! You get an email from them when you have articles to Digg or Stumble and if you don’t…well, you just won’t get paid, simple as that!

You won’t make huge amounts of money working for them, but you will make a nice small supplemental income. Usually it takes less than about 10 seconds to Digg or Stumble an article…so imagine getting paid for that. I was going to do this review quite some time ago, but I was unsure of how my sign-up would pan-out and how it all worked. I am now recommending them because of how much I enjoy doing the “work”, if you can call it that.

Anyhow, check out Subvert and Profit! What’ve you got to lose? (Nothing!)

I apologize for this article being “late”, but it has taken me the last couple of days to write. It’s hard work compiling, verifying and describing such a large list of links but alas on with the story…

So, some of you may know this, but I would bet that many others of you do not…that you can get a lot of traffic from social bookmarking websites. You can get this traffic by submitting your website or blog to social bookmarking websites. There’s a lot of spam out there and I really suggest that you don’t contribute to it, therefore try to bookmark or share sites that have interesting or useful information on them. It should be pretty easy for most bloggers to do this, since most of you have interesting or useful articles on your website. Now, the decision is to choose one or two articles that you want to promote and get to work. And, I didn’t mention the word “work” lightly, it will be a bit of work but it’ll be well worth it.

All social bookmarking sites will require you to make a profile on them individually. You’re ahead of the game if you have an account on a couple of the bigger ones such as Digg or StumbleUpon (if not, no worries). What I would suggest is that you submit your website to as many social bookmarking sites as possible, at least once (or more if it’s a different story or article). Entice your users to do the same thing if they liked a particular article or story. There are a couple of add-ons for WordPress that allow this, one is ShareThis and the other is Sociable. Just don’t re-submit your articles under different usernames from the same machine…this would be considered spam and would be causing an unfair advantage to your stories. You also shouldn’t need to spam, as users will come to your site if they’re interested…they won’t if they’re not. You can’t trick people, well you can but what’s the advantage?…you’ll just be making people angry.

Without further ado, let’s make a list of the current bookmarking sites out there so you can get started!

If that’s too much work for you, I found a cool tool called Bookmarking Demon. It allows you to automatically apply for new user profiles and submit your site(s) to a ton of bookmarking services. It’s all automated and while it’s not free, if you believe time is money, I’m sure the tool will pay for itself within the first hour of use.

Well that’s it, so get bookmarking away and market your site(s)!! Hey, if you liked this article, bookmark this somewhere ;). Also, if you know of any other sites that I missed or anything else, let me know! Until next time…

Ok, so my link train article (or “death to link trains”) was extremely successful and I thought I could do a bit more for the cause. So, why not create a button to show support? Now in all fairness to not “steal” PageRank popularity from others, I am making this button available in a few different ways.

So, what can this button do? Well, the button itself shouldn’t be doing anything unless you have a vivid imagination. The button should be posted on your website or blog to show your commitment to stop useless link trains! If you feel the same way as I do, please post it on your site! The best part of this deal is, you don’t have to give me any credit! Yes, that’s right…not only is this button free, but it’s got no strings attached :). As for where you can put the button…well, put it anywhere you feel you should. I’d appreciate any help getting the word out there, so please send this button to other people or get people to download it here, or wherever. Even if you want to host it on your site and ask people redistribute it, go for it! Let’s work together to end useless link trains for the readers out there!

If you want, I am linking one button to my “death to link trains” article so if you think people don’t understand what a link train is, they’ll have a point of reference. As for the other two buttons, one is just going to be posted here so you can right click and do a “save as…” and just post it onto your site, and the other button will be hosted on my server so you only have to put some HTML code on your website for the button to show up.

Here is the code to put the regular button on your site:

<img src=”http://joemidway.com/images/nolinktr.png” alt=”End link trains” style=”border: 0;” /></a>

And here is the code to put the linked button (linked to the “Death to link trains” article) on your site:

<a href=”http://joemidway.com/2007/08/01/blogging/death-to-link-trains/” title=”Death to link trains”><img src=”http://joemidway.com/images/nolinktr.png” alt=”Death to link trains” style=”border: 0;” /></a>

Well that’s it! I hope you enjoy it and spread the word!
