When Cyndi Perera and I set out for a shoot in Dania Beach, neither of us were particularly familiar with the area, however, we kept an open mind. As we pulled up to the beach pier parking lot, we both stared at the boatyard in front us with the sun setting behind it and grinned. Naively, we assumed that pirates were a thing of the past and boatyards were surely open to the public. Instead, we received a quick reality check in the form of a key-coded gate.

Just as we started to walk away with our heads down, a friendly voice shouted the access code across the dock from one of the boats. We thanked the man, opened the gate, and proceeded to create the images below. No plan was needed… just great lighting, an interesting location and a little luck. Thanks to Olivia Smalley for another great job with hair & makeup. Enjoy!

We literally caught the the last 30 minutes of daylight, which, also happens to be my favorite time to shoot. With a beautiful sunset, no lights or special equipment were required. Check out the final images below.
