Semar is one of the clown character in the Mahabaratha story. He is the father of Gareng, Petruk, and Bagong.

The special characteristic of Semar is his big bottoms. His big bottoms are so famous that it becomes a name of a turn in Gunung Kidul called Bokong Semar.

Semar actually is the wiseman for Pandawa family. He is said to be the brother of Bathara Guru.

When I whent sightseeing in an antique shop, i saw an old oval ceramic tray, very much alike with the one my mom has at home. This kind of antique tray is usually oval in shape, 30 t0 50 centimeters wide, has blue and white floral motif ceramic base, framed with carved (either pure or plated) silver. What a sophisticated antique item!

Batik is originally handmade with canting as the writing tool, but then appeared batik stamp following the development of production system. Many of the stamps have been used for tens of years and that's how some batik lovers started to keep them as collectible piece of antique articles. This is a Chinese bench which is designed with a single seater. The carving is usually in the shape of dragon and gods or wisemen. Many are also carved based on famous Chinese legend.

Gerobok is originally from Madura, a small island in the north of East Java. The ornament is so unique and typically Madura with big carving and inlay ornament. The wheel and the metal handle on each side make it nicer.

In Java traditional puppet show, there are four famous clown characters, Semar (the father), Gareng, Petruk, Bagong (the sons). Semar symbolizes wisdom and the sons represent the different characteristics of human beings.

Their names and figures often inspire artists and craftsmen in the creation of the artwork. For example this set of Petruk Bangong craft.
