John Grisham is worried about the future of the printed word in the wake of deep discounting of best-sellers by major retailers and the advent of e-book readers like Amazon’s Kindle. “Truthfully it doesn’t affect me — in the short term,” Grisham told Matt Lauer on TODAY. “But it’s a disaster in the long term.”

The state of the nation’s prison system will be the topic of the Legal Aid Justice Center’s annual fundraising event. The event will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Paramount Theater in Charlottesville, and John Grisham will act as master of ceremonies. “Incarceration Nation” will feature a panel discussion about the prison reform movement and an episode of the documentary series “30 Days” featuring filmmaker Morgan Spurlock’s month in jail.

John Grisham reads about 4-5 newspapers a day, including the Washington Post. He especially appreciates the obituaries as he gets inspiration for stories and names (since they are dead, they can’t sue him, he joked). His first and only (and perhaps last, as he admitted he’s not a lover of hours of research and writing facts) non-fiction work, The Innocent Man, came as a result of an obituary he read.
