John McCain launched the final attack of his campaign, a fraudulent assault on Barack Obama that serves as a fitting reminder of the fundamental dishonesty not only of his own campaign, but also of the dishonesty of his allies in the right-wing propaganda establishment: Matt Drudge and FOX News.

All you need to know to understand the video is that the Drudge, FOX, and the McCain campaign joined forces with Newsbusters to push a story that the San Francisco Chronicle had concealed an eleven month old recording that supposedly contained devastating audio of Barack Obama proposing to bankrupt the entire coal industry.

Not only was that story false (more detail below), but it turns out that Barack Obama and John McCain have the same position on clean coal technology, and Ohio’s Republican senator said McCain’s plan to fight global warming would “put coal out of business.”Here’s the facts that the McCain-Drudge-FOX axis of weasel does not want you to know: The Chronicle had not concealed the recording, which had been on the newspaper’s website all along. And rather than reveal some sinister scheme, what it actually demonstrated was that Barack Obama supported clean coal technology — a position he shares with none other than John McCain.

Despite the fact that both candidates support clean coal technology, the McCain campaign tried to make the case that Barack Obama wanted to take away jobs from coal country in Ohio and Pennsylvania, and both Drudge and FOX were happy to oblige.

But just three years ago on the floor of the United States Senate, John McCain’s Republican colleague George Voinovich of Ohio took to the floor to argue against a proposal by McCain to curb greenhouse gas emissions. McCain’s proposal, Voinovich said, would “put coal out of business” and cost thousands of jobs, an argument that McCain did not contest.

In fact, McCain agreed that his plan would require sacrifice, but he also argued (correctly) that in the long-run, America would be better off. In other words, he made the exact same arguments as Barack Obama — and as you can see above, it was all on video.

The clips I used from FOX were actually attacking Barack Obama, but the fact that you could just as easily have swapped McCain in place of Obama reveals how their media enterprise is really a propaganda operation in which political figures are nothing more than character actors taking up space in their pre-ordained dramatic narrative.

They aren’t dealing with reality, they are trying to construct a new reality. For years, they’ve been able to maintain political power by doing just that, but now that the reality of their disastrous governance has caught up to them, their ability to lie their way to victory has been severely damaged.

For better or for worse, it’s a lesson they still haven’t learned. They still think they can fake their way through it.

But that’s not really the important thing. The important thing is that we are overcoming their grip on power. And for that, the world is a better place.

When he was just the topic du jour because of his question to Barack Obama back in the neighborhood in Ohio, that was one thing. But “Joe the Plumber” is now actively campaigning with and for John McCain, appearing on stage with him at multiple events, etc. He has become a part of McCain’s campaign, like any other surrogate.

So here “Joe” is on TV just about an hour ago saying that people shouldn’t vote for Obama because he doubts Obama’s “loyalty to America”.

I guess saying Obama reminded him of Sammy Davis, Jr. wasn’t bad enough. But isn’t it time someone ask McCain whether he’s really willing to associate with this extremist?

This might just be the perfect companion to John McCain’s “the economy is fundamentally strong” gaffe. Sunday morning on Meet The Press, McCain told Tom Brokaw that he and George W. Bush shared a “common philosophy.”

Do we share a common philosophy of the Republican Party? Of course.

Now let me just ask you a simple question: at this point in the campaign, is there anything stupider that John McCain could have said about his political philosophy than to admit that he shares it with George W. Bush?

Barack Obama quickly seized on McCain’s gaffe, tearing into him in both Denver and Ft. Collins.

Unfortunately, there has been very little news coverage of McCain’s blunder, nor of Obama’s response. At least as of the writing of this blog entry, what little coverage there was had missed the point, reporting that it was Obama who had tied McCain to Bush when in fact it was McCain who had tied McCain to Bush.

Fortunately, yesterday was Sunday, giving Obama another shot to stick McCain with his words. Either he or Biden could say something about it today, or perhaps the campaign could throw together a television ad to highlight McCain’s admission. It might not even have to come from the campaign: any reporter lucky enough to get to ask McCain a question ought to ask him about it.

Whatever happens, whether or not McCain’s words get the attention they deserve, it underscores once again what we already know: in terms of politics and policy, a McCain presidency would be just like another four years of Bush, except with Sarah Palin in the vice president’s office.

Here’s the transcript of the video:

OBAMA (Denver, CO): Just this morning, Senator McCain said that actually he and President Bush share a “common philosophy.”

McCAIN (Meet The Press): Do we share a common philosophy of the Republican Party? Of course.

OBAMA (Ft. Collins, CO): That’s what he said. A “common philosophy.”

OBAMA (Denver, CO): I guess that was John McCain finally giving us a little straight talk, owning up to the fact that he and George Bush actually have a whole lot in common. Well, here’s the thing though. We know what the Bush-McCain philosophy looks like.

OBAMA (Ft. Collins, CO): It’s a philosophy that says we should give more and more to folks at the top, to millionaires and billionaires, to the wealthiest among us, and that somehow it’s all going to trickle down on the rest of us.

OBAMA (Denver, CO): It’s a philosophy that justifies spending $10 billion a month in Iraq while the Iraqi government sits on a huge surplus and our economy is in crisis.

OBAMA (Ft. Collins, CO): For eight years we’ve seen this philosophy at work, and it’s put our economy on the wrong track, and we can’t afford another four years that look like the last eight.

OBAMA (Denver, CO): It is time for change in Washington, and that’s why I’m running for President of the United States of America, and that’s why you’re here today.

However, the McCain campaign is hiring paid workers who sometimes also call themselves volunteers. The UpTake’s Sam Mayfield talked to a few of them… and that’s when one McCain campaign worker decided you shouldn’t see what is going on and threatened to have her arrested.
