Time to Start Dress Shopping for High School Prom Season

The 2012 High School Prom Season is just getting started and there are a lot of beautiful prom dresses out there this year! Be sure that you get your prom dresses to me as soon as you can because I tend to get really busy around this time of year and my turn around for dresses increases.

Please note that if you get a dress at a department store and they tell you the dress cannot be altered, you need to call me for a second opinion!

Often times department stores do not like to get involved with alterations and prohibit certain alterations requiring deconstruction of the garment for liability purposes.

I've had several clients come to me with garments that "could not be altered" and I have been able to alter most all of them!

Remember I can visit you at your home or office for minimum orders of $100 dollars or you can come see me at my Powder Springs Alterations Studio. Please call for appointments, I may be out seeing other clients!

Tips On Picking Out Bridesmaid Dresses

When choosing your bridesmaid dresses, consider thinking about the body styles of your girls over a certain style that you might like. You may be wanting a style that looks better on a size 4 when your bridal party may all be sizes 10 and up.

Your bridal party will love you if you are considerate of their tastes. Something that can worn again and is not swamp green in color may be greatly appreciated! Remember that everybody may not feel comfortable in sleeveless. Think about Susie that had a baby 2 months ago and is still working on getting back in shape. I have done a lot of bridesmaid alterations and have heard, “I could just kill her for picking this out.”

If you are able to keep your size range close, that is great. i.e.: 2, 4, and 6. If you are not so lucky and you come up with a 2, 4, 8, and 14 you may want to allow the girls to pick out their own bridesmaid dresses as long as you approve it and the dresses match in color.

In the example above, a 2-piece may work better with the size 14. I very much like 2-piece dresses because they can be easier to work with when you have fit issues. Vendors will usually sell different styles within the same collection and a little variance amongst the girls can be tasteful, especially if all the bridesmaids look their best!

Bridesmaids should have their dresses at least 30-60 days before the wedding to allow time for alterations, but try not to order the dresses too soon! I once had a bride order dresses almost a year in advance and did not know that she had a pregnant bridesmaid. The wedding happened when the bridesmaid was in her 8th month. They were able to order extra fabric and I was able to alter the dress, but you never know what can happen.

Frustrated from shopping, spending too much, and still not having what you need? Here are four easy wardrobe shopping tips that will save you time and money!

1. Give Yourself a Quick Wardrobe Consultation before Shopping

Go into your wardrobe closet and see what kinds of pieces you have, considering colors, textures, et cetera, and think about what kinds of pieces or accessories will make a good match. Having a game plan will help you to complement your wardrobe, not complicated it.

2. Never Buy Clothes for Your Wardrobe at Full Cost

Even if you are a millionaire, that new outfit will be on sale next week - do not waste your money on new items! Start browsing at the front of the store to see what items you love, and remember them as you end up shopping on the sale racks in the back. The next time you are there, that new blouse you loved will be at least 25% off.

3. Browse Online for Your Wardrobe before Shopping in Person

Spend a few minutes browsing items online before you go into the store so you will already have an idea of what you want and need when you get to the store. To save even more time, write down the item information or print out the items to hand to a sales associate when you walk in.

4. Think You Love It – Leave It

Although we cannot admit to it, most all of our purchases are impulse buys. When you come across something you think you just have to have, walk away from it. Go back the next day, or the next time you want to go shopping, and see if you still love it. If you do, get it! If not, look at the price tag and be proud of the money you saved!

Does your wardrobe need a makeover? Ask yourself: Are you tired of not getting the compliments you expected when choosing an outfit? Are you tired of buying great pieces only to find that you have nothing that goes with them? Are you tired of being frustrated every time you try to get dressed?

You probably need my help! I have made a mark in Atlanta as the tailor that comes to you for alterations, fittings, and deliveries, but in my 20 years of traveling tailoring, I have saved hundreds of people from complete wardrobe meltdowns in the mornings!

Having an eye for fashion comes naturally to me. Through my fashion study and experience with custom tailored clothing, I see not only colors, but lines, shapes, and how well clothes are (or are not) worn.

When I do a wardrobe consultation, I talk to my client about styles and colors that they like and try to get a feel for their tastes. Usually I have already worked with the client on various alterations and I personally know the look and feel that they go for. I typically find that the client has pieces that are great, but they try and use the pieces in poor combinations that take away as opposed to adding to the overall look and statement.

I may ask the client to try on several pieces so I can get an idea of how they really fit and look on the client. After I have seen the client wearing pieces, I get a better idea of what is working and what is not working. At this point, I am able to start making recommendations on how to piece different existing pieces together – and how not to – as well as discuss the pieces that should be scrapped and the kinds of pieces that are missing.

I try to keep the wardrobe consultation light hearted and uplifting because I know how apprehensive people can be about making changes to their wardrobe. Simply put, some people have sentimental attachments to pieces that really may not be that flattering – we all do it!

After working with the client and talking about different styles and goals for the wardrobe, I offer my personal shopping service to the client; since I know what the client should be looking for and will be the one to make any alterations if necessary, I find it convenient for myself and the client and it also prevents the client from falling back to unflattering shopping choices that led to a wardrobe consultation in the first place!
