My family is more important to me than anything else aside from my relationship with Jesus. And when they hurt, I hurt.

Really was a great morning @ Meadow. The message is uploaded at "Online Messages" @ www.meadowonline.org

If someone is looking for a church filled with people who think they have it all together, then they won't be comfortable @ Meadow. But if someone is looking for a church that is filled with imperfect people who know it and accept others who are imperfect, they they will be right at home.

We have the best volunteers ever. Every Sunday, they go above and beyond the call of duty.

Weather was awesome today...nice breeze, not too hot, low humidity.

Ramping up for God @ the Movies is heating up. It might be summer, but I think this is going to be HUGE in seeing people connect with and get right with God.

Still thinking through a series using the music of Queen. Not sure how much I will sleep tonight - so I might put some brain time into it.

Been spending some time reflecting over the past year and all God has taught me, how He has changed me, and is still changing me due to my depression last summer & fall.

One year ago today, I crashed into the valley of depression. It took me 3 months to admit it. You can listen to my story and how God carried me through this dark valley at www.meadowonline.org. Go to "Online Messages" and find "The Pit of Depression".

By the grace, mercy, and strength of Christ, I have been making changes in my priorities, leadership style, need for control, exercise commitments, and other areas. Without question and without apology, the most important lesson I learned is that what matters most in life is my relationship with Christ and what He thinks, says, and expects of me - not what others think, say, or expect of me. I live for Christ and Christ alone.

Today...I am still learning what it means to live the Christ-life. But I love life, my wife, my kids, Meadow, the people of Meadow, non-Meadow friends, the fire department - more today than at any other time I can remember. I get up looking forward to the day and when I go to bed, I can't wait to get up in the morning and do it all over again - discovering what new things God has in store for me and how I get to be a small part of His grand plan for this world.

I want everyone I know to know, possess, and experience what I know, possess, and experience. It is highly likely you have already been invited by me to come to Meadow. (And until you say yes - I will continue to invite you!!) Why? Not because I want you to hear me speak but because I want you to experience church and relationship with Christ in a way you have never experienced or heard before. I really believe in our message and our style. More so today than ever before.

Anyway...I'm headin for bed. Later.

Overall - all-around great weekend thanks to my wife, kids, and awesome peopel at Meadow.

Paws is doing a little better. Her heart is strong. It's her back legs. One of these days she is going to lay down and just not be able to get back up.

Love going fishing with Sandy - even if she catches the biggest fish.

54 people @ Meadow going thru Financial Peace University! 3x what we were hoping for.

I LOVE leading Meadow. THE greatest church in America!

Totally impressed with Rachel & Sandy speaking today. They really brought it!

Thursday was tough to say goodbye to Patti. 7 years as a great Admin. Assist. Just glad it's only the end of a working relationship, not a friendship.

Overwhelmed by the giving of Meadowites. Few people see it like I do or know the situations people are giving out of. Loads of people are going to be bombarded with blessing from God.

There is such a fresh wind of energy and optimisim @ Meadow and I'm lovin' it!

The new stage lights, speaker, and video/image set up is absolutely COOL! I can't see anyone from stage - but no biggie. It's what's best to make the message clearer.

Mike (new worship leader intern) is knocking it out of the park with the music - in spite of it being summer and building a team with people gone.

I love my wife - hands down. She is awesome.

Pumped about Tena starting in as new receptionist. She's gonna be doing a lot, and will be bringing a new level of energy to the office - even as a volunteer.

Pulled a bloated, blood-sucking, disease-filled tick from PJ (my other dog) today. You'll probably hear about it someday as an illustration about selfish Christians who think its all about them (did I actually say that?! :))

I've been watching some friends suffer consequences of bad choices and it really hurts - not gonna lie.

Thinking about doing a teaching series using the music of Queen like we did U2 a couple years ago. I LOVE Queen. (Any requests?)

I am a bit vulnerable today. My 14 yr old dog (that's 69 yrs old in dog years) is not doing well and I fear the worse. I have never had a more loyal, faithful, gentle, obedient dog.

When I get vulnerable like this, my tolerance level goes down - especially with Christians and religious people who just don't get it. And 1 Timothy 2:4-6 is one of those passages that I just want to ring some necks and shake some sense into Christians and religious people. It can't get any clearer or any more black and white!

Two things...

First: God wants ALL men to be saved. And guess what "all" means? It means ... "all". That is every single person you see in the store, on the street, driving a car, walking by your house, working out in the gym, sitting across from you in the committee meeting, sitting two rows down from you at the baseball game ... "all"! It is the unwed pregnant teen. It is the buddy who seems to be possessed by drinking beer and naked women. It is the couple who are living together. It is the man or woman who is living the gay lifestyle. It is the next door neighbor who has friends over and parties loud into the night. It is "all". You cannot name one single person - not one - who God does not want to be saved.

And let's stop making a big deal out of the word "saved". Fruitcake extreme Christians have given this word a bad connotation. It simply means that God wants "all" to know, trust, and follow Jesus Christ and to be "saved" from the muck of sin.

C'mon Christian! We have shut the door on "all" men in the name of being a mature Christian and wanting to "grow deeper". Nothing else shows the immaturity of a Christian and being "un-like" Christ more than when they surround themselves with and build their own little Christian world around them! And nothing confirms in the mind of the non-churched or person who does not have a personal relationship with God that Christians are strict, irrelevant, too good for them, disconnected from life ... more than the Christian who does not hang out and build friendships with "all" men!

It's time we say no to 2-3 Bible study groups each week and the church softball league. It's time to join a gym, volunteer on the school's PTO group, have a backyard bbq and invite everyone on your street. It's time we pray and aggressively seek to fill our churches with people who are missing that personal relationship with God, and other churches and Christians have turned away. It's time we program the single most time when those who do not know God personally are more likely to come to church (Sunday mornings) with them in mind.

I am so thankful for Meadow - a church, although far from perfect, that has the priority of being a place those who have been bored, by-passed, or burned by other churches and Christians - can come and not be turned away and will understand the greatest message and won't feel like an "outsider".

SECOND: It is clear that there is "ONE" mediator between God and us - that is Jesus Christ. It is not Mary, or Saint Barney, or the local pastor or priest. It is Jesus Christ. It can't get any clearer than that! It doesn't matter what you learned or heard in confirmation or parochial school or church last Sunday...if anyone taught you to pray to anyone other than Jesus - they are wrong. If anyone taught you to depend on anyone or anything other than Jesus to get right with God - they are wrong. And that's not my opinion. That's what the Bible says in clear black and white.

Now...I need to hit "save" and do something else before I get in any more trouble.

Some will view these as overly strict. However, in my 25 years of ministry, I have found the value and benefits of these and the protection they give to me, my marriage, my family, and most important - my relationship with Christ.

You need to know what your leaders are doing and placing in their lives to protect their integrity, relationships, marriages, reputations, etc. Every staff member @ Meadow, including me, is required to sign & commit to a set of values and standards. If someone is unwilling to sign and commit to these, they are disqualifed from leading in a staff role.

I take my leadership and the leadership of Meadow staff extremely serious. I simply don't mess around with it. Have fun with it? Absolutely. I am having the time of my life. But ... protecting it and the high standards it comes with are non-negotiables.

It's been awhile since I have communicated these values & standards. I will be breaking it down into bite-sized pieces over the next few days.

This is the intro section:

Staff positions at Meadow Spring – whether pastoral staff, ministry staff, or support staff – are Christian leadership positions of the highest calling and carry with them a significant level of responsibility, honor, and respect from each other, our church family, and the community we are trying to reach.

While we each have different areas of focus and responsibility, we are on the same team – and it is a growing team. Due to this team growth, we need to have clearly communicated and understood values and standards which help identify us, create professionalism in our conduct, community image, and image to our church family. These values will also protect and help us be men and women of integrity.

While these values and standards may not necessarily be expected of the Meadow Spring member or attender, they are expected of all who accept the calling of being on paid ministry staff at Meadow Spring. As we choose a higher sense of leadership and responsibility, we too are accepting a higher standard of values and ethical expectations.

God takes very seriously those He calls into church leadership positions. God also assigns a higher level of expectation and accountability to those He calls into church leadership positions. We will too.

Having values of excellence are essential because:
• Our positions first and foremost represent Jesus Christ. How we conduct ourselves and present ourselves is a testimony of the God we serve and is a huge factor in how people view our God. We want people to view our God as a God of excellence, order, strength, love, etc.
• Our positions represent Meadow Spring. Just as how we conduct ourselves and present ourselves determines to a large degree how people view our God, it also greatly affects how people view Meadow Spring. We want people to view Meadow Spring as a church of professional excellence and high ethical standards.
• The values we choose affect the manner in which we do ministry. High standards and professional standards breed professional work and ministry.

Paul was not ashamed of his past. He wasn't proud of it either in the sense of boasting about what he did and who he was. But, he was not ashamed of it in the sense of not wanting to talk about it or admit it. He used it to point to Christ. He used it to point to God's mercy and forgiveness. He used it to put his foot down and say, "Yeah, my past was bad. But God's mercy and forgiveness are bigger than my past and He showed me mercy, forgave me, and now is using me." (1 Timothy 1:15-16)

My past may not be as bad as Paul's from a human perspective. I mean...in the eyes of man, a mass murderer is a worse sinner than someone who steals a pack of bubble gum from the store or blames his little sister for scribbling on the bedroom wall. I am the kid who stole the bubble gum (and the tootsie rolls, and sunflower seeds and the wax finger tips and the candy necklaces and the...). I am the one who blamed his little sister for scribbling on the bedroom wall (and then watched as my mom spanked her and not me which was okay until my mom found out the truth!)

BUT...in the eyes of God we are all DEAD and need His LIFE. Sin is sin. All sin breaks God's heart and violates God's perfect standard. Break one sin (even something as small as stealing a .05 tootsie roll) and I have broken them ALL. I am a sinner. I am the one Paul wrote to Timothy about in 1 Timothy 1:8-11 ... the ungodly, the sinful, the rebels, the unholy, the perverts, the liars, the perjurers... I am the sinner who needs the law. I am the sinner who needs the mercy and forgiveness of Christ - just like Paul did.

And then God showed His mercy to me and forgave me and is now allowing me to be part of building His kingdom by serving others, being Jesus with skin on, inviting others to church, talking to others about Him, praying for others.

I need to use my past and my sinful state to point to Christ and His forgiveness and mercy. To point to the fact that is it bigger and more powerful than my past, Paul's past, and anyone's past. To point to the fact that when He forgives - He also invites us and wants us to be on His team to serve others, improve the life of others, pray for others, invite others to church. He doesn't use my past to hold me back from serving Him! He uses my past to put the spotlight on Him!

One more thing...God forgives and does not hold your past against you. Unfortunately, people are not God and there will always be those who keep reminding you of yesterday and will hold it against you. Forget about them. Live to please God.
