I applaud them for what they are doing. But they are obviously referring to "higher functioning" autistic's, those with verbal and written skills. What they say about "Children With Autism 'Fall Off the Cliff' After Graduation" is completely true and a social tragedy. It really shows how much our society despises having autistic people in their midst. Until the age of 21, the public school system is forced to deal with them as children. Once they graduate from high school, it's completely at the discretion of who is funding the program as to whether that autistic child get the service. In many cases, they choose not to give the service at all. It's almost criminal.

Before You Judge...

I found this on Google+ and just had to share it. It's not new, but still profound. I've spent most of my adult life behind the power curve. That is, I've always had an extra consideration to any life or career decision - my autistic son. OK, everyone has to make those choices, but if you are or know someone who is affected by Autism, then you know what I mean. From the countless times I've been pulled away from work, family activities, sleep, and everything else because there was something I needed to turn my attention to about my son. From the places we've lived, to how we've lived, the costs to fix the damages, the vehicles I own; his condition is not just an addition to normal considerations, it's a combat multiplier.

So judge me if you want to, but walk in my shoes then tell me how you feel.

This will become a big deal for millions of those previously diagnosed with Autism. I believe over the last 20 years, the definition of "Autism" has changed significantly, it broadened to include other things such as Asperger's Syndrome. A great many children that most of us would consider to be "normal" have been classified with with one of the many forms of Autism that have been defined over the last generation.

Right, wrong, or indifferent, lots of people are gonna be affected by this change. I think my son will still qualify, though. He does not read, write, or talk. He will probably never be a productive part of society. He will always require living assistance.

This is just wrong, and it shows how uneducated and insensitive people are. If they had the smallest insight into this child's condition, this would not be a headline. As a society, we cannot condemn those with Autism because of who and what they are. So the kid's parents will get a fine, the child will get community service. Both are counter productive.

I seldom go to movies while they are in theaters. Nor do I buy them from pay-per-view or rent them. But I may have to find the time and money for this one. Two of my most favorite actor/actress of all time have bravely jumped inthttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifo this one, Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock. You don't need a biographical explanation of these two to know it doesn't get much better my friends. I would love it if this film is a box office smash. if it's only half as good as either of their best performances, it will make hundreds of millions of dollars. More than that, it will bring much needed focus and attention to Autism. We cannot thank them enough for that.

This is not unlike the argument that was made against television and music. In fact, it's partially why video games come with an age/maturity rating. I don't think this is a surprise, and it may well explain otherwise irrational behaviors to parents, children, teachers, and health care professionals. The fact that what we see, what we hear, and what we experience desensitizes us, it would stand to reason that a person that plays violent video games, even infrequently, would have a higher propensity to violent acts. I don't think it takes a mental health professional to come to that conclusion.

If I didn't know better I'd think the author knew me. ADHD and anxiety have plagued me for many years. My efforts to break it's death grip on me have only made me more aware of the things I don't want to worry about. It's horrible, it's affects my family. It's drive my life, where I work, when I work, who I speak to, what I feel about myself when I look in the mirror. The list is endless. Anti-depressants only dull the senses, but the fear is still there, still keeping me from doing the things I want to, getting the jobs I should have, and making the money I deserve.

This excerpt says it all.

“People with ADHD, especially when untreated, are more likely to feel overwhelmed and to have more things fall through the cracks which evokes more frequent negative situations—others are angry with them, they feel disappointed in themselves,”

I hope you find this article useful, and above all else if you know someone that suffers from ADHD, realize what they're going through. Help them see past their fears, and flaws. This will do a world of good in their heart and mind.
