Chlöe is stepping into a whole new era — and she’s bringing one of the greatest producers of all time with her.

The singer, actress, producer, and all-around powerhouse just announced her new mixtape RESURRECTION, a joint project with none other than Timbaland, set to arrive June 19. And based on the title alone, it sounds like Chlöe is ready to reintroduce herself, reset the conversation, and remind folks exactly who she is.

Chlöe has never been afraid to experiment. From her solo debut era to Trouble in Paradise, she has continued to push herself vocally, visually, and creatively. But linking up with Timbaland feels like a very intentional move. Timbo’s sound helped define eras for Aaliyah, Missy Elliott, Ginuwine, Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado, and so many more — so pairing his futuristic, hard-hitting production with Chlöe’s vocal range and performance style could be exactly the kind of shake-up fans have been waiting for.

What makes this especially exciting is that Chlöe is not just a vocalist who shows up and sings what she’s handed. She’s a producer, arranger, and creative force in her own right. Roots Picnic had plenty of moments this weekend — and while, Jay-Z definitely had the timeline in shambles with that performance and all those bars folks are still decoding, Brandy gave the R&B lovers something to talk about.

The Vocal Bible stepped onto the Roots Picnic stage and immediately reminded the crowd that some catalogs do not age — they mature. And she looked the part while doing it. Brandy was drenched in a custom Cross Colours fit, serving full ’90s realness and paying homage to the era that helped shape her image, her sound, and her place in the culture. It was the perfect visual match for a set that felt like a love letter to classic R&B and the fans who have been riding with her since the beginning.

From the moment she tapped into those early records, it was clear this was not just about running through hits. It was about taking people back to a time when R&B had feeling, bridges, harmonies, and songs you could actually live with. Brandy gave the crowd the sweet, youthful energy of her debut era, the confidence and polish of Never Say Never, and the vocal layers that would later make albums like Full Moon and Afrodisiac so influential.

Jay-Z hit the Roots Picnic stage in Philly this weekend for his long-awaited return to the stage, and he came outside and chose violence!

Jay hit the stage alongside The Roots for what was already billed as one of the biggest moments of the weekend. A rare Hov festival set, in Philly, backed by one of the greatest live bands in hip-hop? That alone was enough to make it a moment. But once he grabbed that mic, it became very clear that this was about more than nostalgia and catalog.

Hov had some things to get off his chest.

The internet immediately started dissecting his new freestyle/opening bars, and let’s just say… the docket was full. Fans quickly began connecting certain lines to Dame Dash, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, Jaguar Wright, and a few more folks who have either had Jay’s name in their mouth, questioned his legacy, or been tied to recent online drama involving him, Beyoncé, Roc Nation, or the Carter empire.

A few of the sharpest moments had fans convinced he was responding to the ongoing chatter around Drake and the conversation about chart success, legacy, and who really sits where in the rap hierarchy. Hov seemed to remind the room that numbers are cute, but influence, ownership, longevity, and impact are a whole different conversation.

Then came what many took as smoke for Dame Dash. Any time Jay references loyalty, legacy, business, or people talking from the sidelines, folks are going to connect it right back to the Roc-A-Fella story. Jay and Dame’s history is one of hip-hop’s most complicated brotherhoods-turned-fallouts, so even a subtle line is enough to send fans right back into the archives.

He also took a direct jab at Jaguar Wright, who has made several public claims and comments about Jay and Beyoncé over the years. Whether it was a direct response or not, the mention and timing had folks gagging because Jay almost never dignifies that kind of commentary publicly.

With all the recent noise around Nicki Minaj, Roc Nation, Megan Thee Stallion, and the ongoing social media back-and-forths, fans immediately tried to connect some of Jay’s lines to Nicki as well. Now, to be fair, Jay did not appear to flat-out say her name from the stage — but the internet heard what it heard, and once the Barbz, the Hovengers, and hip-hop Twitter start connecting dots, baby, the think pieces write themselves.

Kanye West also seemed to catch a little stray in the mix, which is not surprising given the years of tension, history, and disappointment between him and Jay. Their relationship has gone from brotherhood to distance to public shots and awkward silence, so any possible reference to Ye is always going to get people talking.

Hov also brought out special guests, including Jazmine Sullivan, Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek, and Bilal to perform as part of his set.

Class Is Back In Session! Netflix Drops First Teaser For A Different World Revival + Announces Premiere Date

Hillman hive, it’s officially time to pack your bags because class is back in session!

Netflix has released the very first teaser for the highly anticipated A Different World revival, and baby… the nostalgia is already nostalgia-ing. The streamer confirmed that the new sequel series will premiere on September 24, 2026, which is a full-circle moment because that date marks exactly 39 years since the original series first premiered.

Talk about honoring the legacy the right way.

The teaser is simple but effective, giving fans their first look at Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of Hillman royalty Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. In the clip, Deborah sits at a classic school desk rocking a red-and-white Hillman varsity jacket while softly humming the iconic theme song that generations of fans know by heart. And yes, she’s also sporting those signature flip-up glasses, giving a sweet nod to her TV dad, Dwayne Wayne.

The new A Different World will follow Deborah as she begins her freshman year at Hillman College, trying to step out of the shadow of her legendary parents while creating her own path, her own friendships, and her own legacy. The series will once again explore life, love, identity, and culture through the lens of a new generation of students at the fictional HBCU.

As previously reported, Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Cree Summer, Darryl M. Bell, and Jada Pinkett Smith are all expected to return in some capacity, bringing Whitley, Dwayne, Freddie, Ron, and Lena back into the Hillman universe. The new cast also includes Alijah Kai, Chibuikem Uche, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, Kennedi Reece, Method Man, and more.

Behind the scenes, this revival is in very good hands. Felicia Pride serves as showrunner and executive producer, while the legendary Debbie Allen returns as executive producer and will direct multiple episodes, including the premiere.

The first teaser doesn’t give away too much, but it gives just enough to let fans know that Netflix understands the assignment: honor the past, introduce the next generation, and bring us back to the place that helped shape so many conversations around education, identity, culture, and community.

BET’s Black + Iconic Soirée returned to the DMV this weekend, and your boy was back on the carpet for another unforgettable night celebrating Black LGBTQ+ excellence, visibility, culture, and community.

The 4th Annual BET Black + Iconic Soirée took place Saturday, May 23, 2026, at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland, during DC Black Pride weekend. The annual celebration, hosted this year by Emmy-nominated actress, producer, and advocate Laverne Cox, brought together a powerful lineup of honorees, presenters, performers, media personalities, advocates, and culture shifters for a night centered on pride, purpose, power, and Black queer excellence.

And baby, the carpet was busy!

JoJoCrews.com and The Prince of Pop Culture Podcast were on the scene capturing interviews, laughs, heartfelt moments, full-circle conversations, and some truly affirming exchanges with icons, allies, and culture shifters.

One of the biggest surprise moments of the night came when the Grande Dame herself, Karen Huger of The Real Housewives of Potomac, made an appearance and granted me an interview on the carpet. You already know the DMV loves us some Karen, and getting that moment with her during such a major night for the culture was a treat.

I also caught up with Lonnie Bee, who always brings the energy, the personality, and the love. Lonnie spoke to the power of showing up, celebrating Black queer joy, and keeping the spirit of Pride alive in true Lonnie Bee fashion.

Another full-circle highlight was speaking with the legendary Coko of SWV and her son Jaye Michael. Coko and I talked about her incredible legacy, her voice that has soundtracked generations, music, touring, and what it means to still be loved after all these years. We also touched on her role as a mother and ally, and the importance of supporting your children fully — especially in a world where many LGBTQ+ people do not always receive that kind of love and acceptance at home.

Jaye Michael, who is carving out his own lane as an artist, also opened up about his music, including his project The Heartbreak Files, and the balance of pursuing his passion while also completing school. That conversation hit home for me, especially with my own son graduating this week, because it was a beautiful reminder that dreams and discipline can exist together.

The honorees also gave me some powerful moments on the carpet.

Jason Lee, who was honored for his work as a media voice, entrepreneur, and culture disruptor, showed major love and gave affirmations that truly meant a lot. From Hollywood Unlocked to The Jason Lee Show, his Impact Awards, and his expanding presence in media and politics, Jason continues to show what it looks like to build loudly, boldly, and unapologetically.

And then there was TS Madison.

Madison’s moment was emotional, powerful, and unforgettable. Being honored as the first-ever Miss Major’s Pioneer of the Year Honoree during a weekend that also included TS Madison Day in D.C. was major. She spoke from the heart, and the love and affirmations she poured into me on that carpet were everything. It was one of those moments that reminded me exactly why I do this work and why these spaces matter.

I also caught up with Amara La Negra and Bobby Lytes, both of whom opened up about the news of Love & Hip Hop reportedly coming to an end after more than 15 years. Amara reflected on the franchise’s legacy, her role in it, and what’s next for her as she continues balancing motherhood, music, television, and business. Bobby, always authentically himself, spoke about what the franchise meant for reality TV, his own journey, and continuing to show up loudly and proudly.

The night also featured a stacked lineup of presenters and performers. Presenters included Amara La Negra, Eva Marcille, Bryan Terrell Clark, Carter The Body, and Ty Young, while Tweet hit the stage as the night’s featured performer, bringing that signature Southern Hummingbird magic to the celebration.

This year’s honorees included TS Madison, Jason Lee, Damon Jones, and Marquise Vilson Balenciaga, each recognized for their impact, visibility, leadership, advocacy, and contributions to Black LGBTQ+ culture and community.

Hosted inside MGM National Harbor, Black + Iconic continues to grow into one of BET’s most meaningful cultural celebrations. Yes, the fashion was there. The glam was there. The celebrity moments were there. But at its core, this night was about something much bigger — honoring the people who push culture forward, create space, open doors, and remind the world that Black LGBTQ+ excellence deserves to be celebrated loudly, intentionally, and all year long.

For me, being back in the building during DC Black Pride weekend felt special. As someone who covers pop culture through a DMV lens, it was beautiful to see so many entertainers, advocates, executives, creatives, allies, and icons gathered right here in our backyard to celebrate Black queer joy, Black queer power, and Black queer impact.

Black Music Month is almost here, and NPR’s Tiny Desk is coming in hot with a celebration that is giving nostalgia, legacy, culture, and some serious “we grew up on BET” energy.

NPR Music announced that its 2026 Black Music Month Tiny Desk lineup will pay homage to BET, and they tapped none other than Big Tigger to help make the announcement. And honestly, who better?

For many of us, Big Tigger is part of the blueprint when it comes to the BET era that shaped how we consumed music, interviews, freestyles, countdowns, and culture. From ‘Rap City’ to ‘106 & Park,’ Tigger was one of the faces and voices of a time when artists had to really pull up, sit down, talk their talk, perform, freestyle, and connect with the people.

Cardi B Leads 2026 BET Awards Nominations as Kendrick Lamar, Beyonce, Doechii, Teyana Taylor, Chris Brown, Usher & More Score Major Nods

The nominations for the 2026 BET Awards are officially in, and Culture’s Biggest Night is already shaping up to be one for the books!

BET announced this year’s nominees, and Cardi B is leading the pack with six nominations, proving once again that when Cardi steps into an era, she’s going to make sure the culture feels it. Right behind her are Kendrick Lamar and Mariah The Scientist, who both earned five nominations each, while Doechii, Doja Cat, Clipse, Teyana Taylor, Olivia Dean, and Latto each pulled in four nods.

Cardi’s nominations include Best Female Hip Hop Artist, Album of the Year for AM I THE DRAMA?, Viewer’s Choice for “Outside,” Best Collaboration for “Errtime Remix” featuring Jeezy and Latto, Video Director of the Year alongside Patientce Foster, and the newly added Fashion Vanguard Award. So yes, Cardi is nominated for the music, the visuals, the fashion, and the overall moment.

Kendrick Lamar is also having another major awards season moment, landing nods for Best Male Hip Hop Artist, Video of the Year for “luther” with SZA, and multiple nominations tied to his Clipse collaboration “Chains & Whips.” Meanwhile, Mariah The Scientist is holding it down for R&B with nominations including Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Album of the Year for HEARTS SOLD SEPARATELY, Video of the Year for “Burning Blue,” Viewer’s Choice, and Best Collaboration for “Is It a Crime” with Kali Uchis.

After years of teasing fans and dropping singles from the project, Mýa has officially released her long-awaited new album, Retrospect, today.

The Grammy-winning singer’s latest project marks her 10th studio album and her first full-length release since 2018’s T.K.O. (The Knock Out). Released independently through her Planet 9 label in partnership with Virgin Music, the album finds Mýa tapping into the retro-inspired R&B, funk, soul, and pop sounds that helped shape her artistry growing up.

The rollout for Retrospect has been building for months thanks to singles including “A.S.A.P.” and the fan-favorite “Just a Little Bit” featuring Too $hort, which recently arrived alongside its official visual. The project also boasts appearances from 21 Savage, Snoop Dogg, Joyner Lucas, D-Nice, and ADÉ.

In recent interviews, the DMV native revealed that portions of the album have actually been in the works for years, with some records dating back to sessions around her Smoove Jones and T.K.O. eras. According to the singer, delays involving clearances, features, mixing, and behind-the-scenes logistics ultimately pushed the album’s release back several times before finally arriving today.

Sonically, Retrospect pulls inspiration from classic ‘70s and ‘80s music, with Mýa citing icons including Prince, Rick James, Teena Marie, Stevie Wonder, and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis as influences behind the album’s direction and production style.

The album has also generated plenty of conversation online thanks to its sleek retro-inspired visuals and album cover, with fans celebrating the return of one of R&B’s most underrated and consistent veterans. Over the past year, Mýa has been heavily promoting the new era through performances, interviews, festival appearances, and major live events while continuing to expand her already impressive independent music catalog.
