2) Homework for today is:

a) Retype your essay putting in quotes where you need them.

b) Write a reference list for your paper.

c) Read through the sections on introductions and conclusions in your textbook. There may be a pop-quiz on this on Monday, if I feel like it.

Creative Writing, notes for Tuesday 12 May

1) Today in class we looked at critiquing: how to, what kind of questions to ask, etc.

2) Homework for today (and for the next few lessons) will be to read through the stories from other students in the class and write a critique of them. You'll be handing them in each lesson as we go. In the class itself, I'll expect you to have something intelligent and cogent and/or not stupid to say about each person's story. I want you to display evidence of having thought about the story, not simply read it. If I disagree with your opinion, that's fine; but you need to have an opinion, and evidence for it.

3) Tentative schedule is as follows:

Session 1) Ban, Phoonsi, Sireerat, Chinnawut

Session 2) Ilada, Honey, Kittikanda, Pochaporn

Session 3) Everyone else.

4) Stories for this week are below:

What kind of story is this? What is the main conflict? Is the house a character? Why, or why not?

B. The Star by Arthur C. Clarke: Download the_star.doc

What kind of story is this? Who is the main character? What is the main conflict in the story? Why did the author choose *this* character for the story? What makes the events of the story so important to him? How does the author show the conflict in the main character without actually telling you what it is until the end?

2) Your homework for today is to rewrite the draft of your assignment, putting in citations where you need them. You need to bring the draft with you for the lesson on Thursday this week.

1) Today in class we did more on showing and telling, this time looking at situations involving two characters and trying to show the relationship between them.

3) You need to hand in the first drafts of your first stories on Tuesday next week. Leave the drafts in my 'in' drawer outside the English Dept. Office on the second floor of the Salaya Center. You also need to email me a draft of your story as a Rich Text Format file. No email = no comments from anyone else in the class. No printed copy = no comments from me.

4) Make sure you've read the stories for this week. (That's a hint.) They are:
