There is so many issues arouse regarding the usage of Styrofoam in our daily lives. It has been the prime research to find its replacement by an eco-friendly alternative.This had motivate Ecovative's Greensulate to create AeroClay.

The research began with an accidental discovery in the lab. One of the students freeze-dried clay and got something intriguing enough to warrant a closer look. So, the team started mixing the clay with a variety of materials. When they added a cow's milk protein called casein, they ended up with a super-light, fluffy, and foam-like material.

"The idea that we could go from milk and dirt to plastic foam seems attractive," said David Schiraldi, a polymer scientist at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. "Clay is pretty close to inexhaustible. Our only effluent is water vapor. It seems pretty green to me."

Next, they add some casein powder, a dried version of the most common protein in milk. The final ingredient is a tiny amount of a glycerol-based material, which basically stiffens up the solution's chemical bonds.
After running the blender one last time, the scientists pour the dirty-looking water into molds and freeze them like ice-cubes. Then, they freeze-dry it get all the water out.
The result, Schiraldi said, is a material that has all the same properties of Styrofoam, but is 98 percent bio-based. At 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit), the milk-containing foam lets out a few drops of water. But it stays sturdy up to 200 degrees Celsius (392 degrees Fahrenheit).

Washington, DC-based Envion has developed a system to produce oil from waste plastic that although they keeping the lid on the details of its proprietary technology, they reveal that they extracting the hydrocarbons from plastic, and the low temperature thermal cracking in a vacuum is part of the process.

Envion was founded by Michael S. Han in January of 2004, alongside a group of seasoned and highly regarded executives with extensive track records of success in the energy, technology, and finance industries, as well as the public sector.

According to the company's website, the Envion Oil Generator is both efficient and environmentally sensitive, producing a net gain in energy recaptured, with vent gas generating electricity to drive the unit. The machine accepts most types of waste plastic, without the need for pre-sorting or cleaning, and is able to handle plastic currently sitting in landfill sites.

The Envion Oil Generator™ accepts PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, PS, and several other plastic materials, such as GPPS, EPS, HIPS, and PA.

The company claims that a single oil generator can convert 10,000 tons of plastic into more than 50,000 barrels of oil a year, at a cost of USD 17 per ton. Given the cost of the alternatives—landfill at USD 70–200 per ton, and recycling at USD 50–150 per ton—Envion looks set to clean up. Envion is also developing an application of the technology to convert car tires into oil.

With the overall plastic market is growing at a rate of more than 7% per year. While in 2005, over 230 million metric tons (over 500 billion pounds) of plastic was produced globally. Envion has come up with a commercially attractive solution to the problem of plastic waste, which should appeal to local authorities for whom waste management is an increasing struggle.

1. Make A Sock Wristband

Socks get holes in them all the time and also have a great ability to lose their match. Making a wristband puts these lone and torn socks to good use instead of throw it into the garbage bins.

What you need is just

One sock with a thick ankle band on it.
Scissors
Sewing Kit-or just a needle and thread.

Steps:

Cut off the top of the sock. You will need to cut off the part that is not stretchy.
Fold the cut edge in just enough to hem it. Alternately, you could fold it even farther for a thinner wristband.
Sew all around the edge of the fold. Turn it right side out and slip it on.
- Try decorating your wristband with buttons or sew on beads.
- You can even sew a patch on it.
- Use socks of all colors and sizes. Some even have patterns on the stretchy part.
- You can use a matching thread to sew the hem, or change it up to make your stitches noticeable.

2. Read Your Labels
You may not realize this but you can find plenty information pertaining to the products you buy. Products branded with a “caution” or “warning” has less impact on the environment than those branded with “danger”.

3. Watch those temperatures!
Use cold water where convenient, for example when washing decking or drive ways. You don’t always need to clean with hot water.

4. Avoid Disposables
Try cleaning with reusable products – such as clothes and sponges. The new trend for disposable cleaning cloths may seem quick and convenient but give a thought for the polar bears in the North Pole whose homes continue to melt away.

5. Go for Concentrates
They use less packaging and work out cheaper too!

6. Know your grade
Most cleaning products use plastic packaging. What you may not know is that plastics come in different grades. You can normally find the grade of the product you are buying at the bottom of its packaging. As a general rule, grade 1 and 2 are good, other grades not so good!

7. Clean as you go

8. Pick up clutter

Recycling may be the right thing to do for the planet, but for those without free curbside pickup service, it doesn't always happen. Ecycler is a new site that aims to make it easier to recycle by connecting those in need of service with those who are willing to do the recycling.

It brings together people giving away recyclables and those interested in collecting them in a particular area. It encourage people to make some money by collecting or selling recycleable materials.
