From humble beginnings as a six person watch-making workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland in 1881 to the internationally renowned corporation responsible for designing, manufacturing and distributing Coach, Concord, Ebel, ESQ, Hugo Boss, Juicy Couture, Lacoste, and Tommy Hilfiger watches, Movado Inc. has sustained a reputation for creative, artistic, high quality timepieces. Company founder Achilles Ditesheim, who began the business at 19 years old, chose the name Movado, which means “always in motion” in Esperanto, an appropriate and semi-prophetic title for a company that would establish a number of timekeeping milestones, including the first watch case designed to fit the curve of a wrist, the first self-winding automatic with month, day, and date display, and the highly-innovative Museum design for which the company is best known. Conceived by Nathan George Horwitt in 1947, the single dot design signifies the sun at high noon, while the hands indicate the movement of the earth. The Museum watch is perhaps Movado’s most significant achievement; many have regarded this piece as an icon of modernism. This simple and elegant design became the first watch to be showcased at the Museum of Modern Art, and was eventually added to its permanent collection. Highly acclaimed American photographer, painter, and curator Edward Jean Steichen described the Movado Museumwatch as “the only truly original and beautiful one for such an object.”

A Watch Made from Steel Recovered from the Titanic

Hublot King Power Usain Bolt Watch

Jamaican sprinter Usain St. Leo Bolt is known as the fastest man in recorded history. He is the only runner to hold both the 100 and 200 meter world records. His team also set the world record for the 4x100 meter relay. He is the reigning champion in these three Olympic events and currently holds four Olympic and five World gold metals at only 25 years of age. In homage to this incredible athlete, Hublot has created the Hublot King Power Usain Bolt watch. Featuring a thin, aluminum case with a Retina multi-touch display, the iWatch boasts a number of features, exceeding any other watch of this type currently on the market. In addition to a variety of clock face selections, the iWatch includes Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology, an eight megapixel iSight camera, HD video recording, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, charging and synching via Wi-Fi, a proximity sensor, a weather forecast system, 16 GB of storage, eight wristbands, and of course, the iTunes/App store. One of our own Jomashop employees spotted this dazzling Corum at a party this weekend. Intrigued, we had to find out more. Only 25 of the Corum Classical Octopus watches have been produced, making this an extremely limited edition. The Einstein Watch

The luxury watch company Longines manufactured a gold wristwatch in 1930 featuring an elegant tonneau-shaped case, skeleton hands, a small seconds sub-dial, and a brown leather strap. As with every Longines model, the company entered the 14 kt gold timepiece into their meticulous production register. A year later, it was engraved with the inscription, “Prof. Albert Einstein, Los Angeles, Feb. 16, 1931,” and presented to the world-renowned theoretical physicist. Several photographs display Einstein proudly wearing this simple, reliable watch, which he later bequeathed to his eldest son. On October 16, 2008, the item came up for auction at the Antiquorum. The significance of the timepiece previously belonging to the man who contributed so vastly to the study of time and space was not lost on collectors, and the piece sold for $596,000, a record high for a Longines timepiece at auction. Cartier has maintained a long history of superior jewelry making, dating back to 1847. The Breitling Chronograph

In 1821 King Louis XVIII requested a device that would allow him to determine the exact length of the horse races he frequently enjoyed. Shortly thereafter, a man named Nicolas Rieussec invented the first commercialized chronograph, derived from the Greek words for time and for writing. Though Rieussec is widely credited with the invention of the chronograph, the first mechanism of this variety was created in 1776 by a man named Jean-Moyez Pouzait as a means to record the flights of projectiles. This model utilized a small pen attached to the index that would mark the watch dial. The length of the mark recorded signified the length of time that had passed—a far cry from the modern analog and digital chronographs employed today.

In 1884, Leon Breitling opened a workshop in Switzerlandexclusively devoted to the development of chronographs and timers. The workshop produced a number of significant improvements to the device, including the first chronograph operated by an independent push-piece in 1915. In 1923, Breitling further advanced the use of the push-piece by separating the reset from the start/stop functions, and later adding a second push-piece for this purpose—a staple in chronograph design today. This advancement allowed the chronograph to time several events consecutively without resetting the watch hands to zero, a feature that proved particularly useful for timing sports competitions and flights.

Breitling boasts perhaps the most significant chronograph milestone in 1969 with the production of the first self-winding chronograph. Other highlights include the first mechanical chronograph, incorporated in their best-selling Chronomat series, and the Caliber 01, the most accurate self-winding chronograph currently on the market, manufactured completely in house by Breitling workshops. Due to their innovations in precise, dependable movements and timers essential to piloting and aerospace expeditions, Breitling has been named the official supplier of world aviation timepieces. In 1962, Breitling’s Navitimer became the first wrist chronograph to travel in space, accompanying Scott Carpenter on his flight in the Aurora7 capsule. Breitling is the only major watch brand that includes chronometer-certified movements in all of its models and is one of the last independently-owned Swiss watch companies remaining. The Indestructible Watch

The Casio G-Shock premiered in 1983, designed by a Casio engineer named Kikuo Ibe who strove to “create a watch that never breaks.” The Casio development team set out to produce a watch that would endure a ten meter free-fall, with ten bar water resistance, and a ten year battery life. With the conception of a hollow-structure case that encloses the module and glass components of the watch on all sides, the G-Shock meets these requirements. A full urethane/resin bezel prevents direct shocks from being absorbed by the module, which is protected by additional cushioning material inside the case. The case design itself prevents any direct contact with flat surfaces against the glass and buttons due to falls. A scratch resistant, urethane band acts as an additional shock absorber.

After being unable to find a watch aesthetically and functionally appropriate for his surfing lifestyle, communications major and Transworld publishing company employee, Chad DiNenna teamed up with Andy Laats, a mechanical engineer and former Burtonemployee working on an MBA at Stanford, to create such a watch. The pair raised $1 million from venture capitalists and launched the Nixon brand in 1997 with seven models. What are the Advantages of a Ceramic Watch?

The use of ceramic for manufacturing household objects dates back to 24,000 BC. Archeologists have excavated animal and human figurines made of ceramic from around this time. Later, around 10,000 BC ceramics were employed in pottery making for both ceremonial and practical uses. The Egyptian discovery of the glaze approximately two thousand years later further popularized its utilization and aesthetic appeal. In fact, the word “ceramic” is derived from the Greek word “κεραμικός” meaning “of or for pottery.” Ceramic endures as a popular manufacturing material today, and its uses range from automobile parts to orthopedic implants. Renowned for its ability to withstand high temperatures, high resistance to chemical erosion, physical hardness, and widespread availability, ceramic functions as an indispensable material across several industries.

The use of ceramic in watch-making debuted in 2000, first employed by Chanel in the J12 watch series. The benefits of a ceramic watch include high resistance to scratches, exceeding even stainless steel in this regard, a high luster, and a lightweight feel. Modern hybrid ceramics are also considerably more durable traditional ceramics, making them a decently comparable alternative to metal and plastic counterparts. The Newest Watch from Breitling

On May 24, 1962, Scott Carpenter wore a Breitling Navitimer Chronograph as he orbited the earth three times on the Aurora 7 flight. Who is the Nation’s Leading Watch Manufacturer?

The nation’s current leading watch manufacturer began as Waterbury Clock Company in 1854. Based in Waterbury, CT, this company produced inexpensive clocks made of brass wheels and gears as an affordable alternative to the exorbitant European imports of the time. They became so popular both as a domestic product and as an export that the area became known as the “Switzerland of America.” In 1877 the company produced a pocket watch made of brass that retailed for a dollar called the Ingersoll Yankee, named after the pioneer of the marketing campaign that led to its profound success. Waterbury Clock Company produced millions of them, and the Ingersoll Yankee earned the nickname, “the watch that made the dollar famous.”

The invention of the wristwatch is commonly attributed to World War I, when soldiers discovered a need to tell time while keeping both hands free for combat. Prior to that time, wristwatches, then called “wristlets,” were exclusively feminine accessories. To meet the wartime demand, Waterbury Clock Company remodeled a ladies’ pocket watch called the Midget to include lugs for a canvas strap, a crown at the 3 o’clock position, and luminescent hands and markers for visibility in low light conditions. This model became the first military-issued wristwatch. The company maintained its status for military reliability through World War II, being awarded the Army-Navy ‘E’ Award for excellence, providing more fuse timers for precision defense than any other company. As a result of this honor, shareholders decided to change the company name to “United States Time Corporation.” In 1945, the name was shortened to Timex, which first debuted on a small shipment of nurses watches.

Timex has enjoyed a number of milestones in timekeeping history, including the first Mickey Mouse clocks and watches, which became the company’s first million dollar line and saved it from bankruptcy following the Great Depression. Timex also developed an inexpensive alloy called Armalloy that effectively replaced the jewels previously required for watch movements. Though many of the jewelers of the time resisted this innovation, primarily due to the low markup on the watches, customer demand paved the way for Timex watches to be sold not only in traditional jewelry stores, but drugstores, department stores, and bodegas as well. By 1962, Timex represented every third watch sold in the U.S. Around the same time, Timex forged a relationship with the Polaroid Corporation and became the first manufacturers of the Polaroid camera and went on to produce more than 44 million of them in the seventies. More recently, the incorporation of the Indiglo night light into watch dials, which endures as a staple feature of Timex watches, made headlines in 1993, when an office worker used the Indiglo light to guide a group of 40 colleagues down the stairs to safety during the World Trade Centerbombing.

Burberry is arguably one of the most successful fashion houses in the market. In 2009, Burberry was ranked as the 98^thmost valuable brand in the world by Business Weekly. Burberry opened its doors in 1856 in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England. Founded by Thomas Burberry, a 21-year-old draper’s apprentice, Burberry quickly became renowned for their outerwear. In 1880 Burberry introduced the garbardine, a trench coat made of yarn that was water-proofed prior to weaving, which produced a garment both water-resistant and breathable. The popularity of this hard-wearing, high quality coat spread rapidly, along with the reputability of the company. However the term “garbardine,” coined by Thomas Burberry himself, never caught on, as King Edward VII often commanded, “Give me my Burberry,” when referring to the coat. Vintage Watch Models Making a Comeback

As cell phones have become ubiquitous amongst Americans, watch sales have been on the decline. In 2011, 42 million Americans purchased a watch as opposed to the 55 million in 2004. In an attempt to revive lagging sales, American Apparel stocked a line of colorful novelty watches a couple of years ago. They received a very strong reaction with customers vying for more, exclaiming that the watches looked exactly like a model they used to own. Creative director Marsha Brady attributes this “nostalgia factor” to their huge success. In fact, American Apparel has begun retailing vintage watch models no longer in production and sold 84,000 pieces in 2011, the same year that the new iPhone was launched. The company predicts that their watch sales will increase by 30% this upcoming year.
