Today it&amp;rsquo;s with mixed emotions that I announce I&amp;rsquo;m transitioning into a board member role at Empyr and taking on the CEO role at Bloom, an in-home health tracker. It&amp;rsquo;s bittersweet because I&amp;rsquo;m going to miss working every day along such a talented team at Empyr while at the same time I’m excited about the potential of Bloom. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;!-- more --&gt;&lt;p&gt;Our brilliant COO at Empyr, Bryon Cook, is being promoted to President to take over all operations there. Bryon has been on the team for a year and a half and has earned the top spot. Bryon worked at Lytx before Empyr and helped take that company from a valuation of less than $50M to a valuation of $1.5B when he left. He brings with him a ton of experience that will benefit Empyr. I&amp;rsquo;m excited to see what he and the entire team can do together. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Empyr was the toughest challenge I&amp;rsquo;ve faced and my greatest teacher. What a wild ride. From the rocket ship growth at launch to all the near-death experiences as we worked to find a business model that would scale. Here we are today with over 7,000,000 consumers and 10&amp;rsquo;s of thousands of businesses on our platform. We have the pleasure of working with some of the best tech companies like Yelp and some of the biggest retailers like Starbucks. We had our best Q4 in company history and are working towards profitability in 2019. It’s an exciting time at Empyr and the best is yet to come. We wouldn’t be where we are today without the incredible effort from all the Empyr team members and the support of our investor base. I am forever grateful to all of you for allowing me to lead this great company for 9 years. It has truly been a great experience. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I will remain an active board member to help Empyr reach its full potential while also taking on a full-time role as CEO of Bloom. The idea for Bloom came up about one and a half years ago. I met a brilliant engineer Matt McCord at a friend’s house and we both geeked out to the wee hours of the morning talking about some of the technological changes coming that will impact our life span in a positive way. Matt and I decided to meet weekly and see what we could build together to increase human longevity. After a few months, we landed on building a way for people to test their health in their home, also known as “lab on a device” or “lab on a chip.” The idea was to use urine because it’s easy to collect and can track over 100 health markers. I let the board at Empyr know about this side project. The most likely outcome of this endeavor was that we would fail to build a working product around this vision. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Fast forward to a few months ago when we completed a full working prototype. I say “we” loosely as this was thanks to Matt, Jesus, our Chief Science Officer, and a solid product development team. Our device attaches to your toilet and automatically captures some urine while you use the restroom. It then analyses it and 5 minutes later you have a full health report on your app including personalized recommendations to fix any deficiencies your body has. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The Bloom test strips will only cost around $5 each. One strip will track magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron, zinc, vitamin C, B7, B9, B12, hydration, PH, ketones, and cortisol. Execution - 5 simple steps to achieve anything</title><description>&lt;figure data-orig-width="800" data-orig-height="450" class="tmblr-full"&gt;&lt;img src="https://64.media.tumblr.com/0aace4240de257a02a955d3e97c03f0d/tumblr_inline_ob6t5jCIV81qzl47u_540.jpg" alt="image" data-orig-width="800" data-orig-height="450"/&gt;&lt;/figure&gt;&lt;p&gt;Want to achieve growth in any area of your business.  It comes down to 5 basic disciplines.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;1. Goal&lt;/b&gt; - Set a goal that is measurable and has a due date. Example: We will grow sales from X to Y by X date.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;b&gt;2. Reporting&lt;/b&gt; - In addition to tracking your progress to the goal daily, you also must track and report on all activities that can influence the goal&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;b&gt;3. Evaluate&lt;/b&gt; - Set aside time each week to flush out issues then turn the issues into tasks, each task needs a person assigned to it and a due date.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;b&gt;4. &lt;b&gt;Agenda&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/b&gt; - At the beginning of each week and each morning check your agenda to make sure you planned the right amount of time to work on the tasks that you created in step 3.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;!-- more --&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;b&gt;5. &lt;b&gt;Take Care Of Business&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/b&gt; - Stick to your agenda and stay focused during those times to get the tasks completed on time, every time.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Below are the common mistakes that keep teams from world class execution and tips for avoiding them.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;1. Goal Mistakes &lt;/b&gt;- Goal aren&amp;rsquo;t clear, such as I want to grow sales or I want to improve team communication. The goal must be absolute, such as I want to grow sales from X to Y by X date or I want to implement a weekly communication meeting by X date. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;Tip: SMART goals are a great goal framework: &lt;a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMART_criteria"&gt;https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMART_criteria&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;S&lt;/b&gt;pecific&lt;/i&gt; – target a specific area for improvement.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;M&lt;/b&gt;easurable&lt;/i&gt; – quantify or at least suggest an indicator of progress.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;A&lt;/b&gt;ssignable&lt;/i&gt; – specify who will do it.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;R&lt;/b&gt;ealistic&lt;/i&gt; – state what results can realistically be achieved, given available resources.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;T&lt;/b&gt;ime-related&lt;/i&gt; – specify when the result(s) can be achieved.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;2. Reporting Mistakes&lt;/b&gt; -  Either there is no reporting in place or the reporting is done after the month ends, which is too late to take corse correcting action. Good reporting should be daily, and should include every stat that can influence the goal.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;Tip: If you run a sales team you should have daily reporting on both the skill and the effort of the team so you know exactly what is causing you to slip below goal and what needs to be improved. For example you could report on calls made (Effort), closed sales (Skill) and all the steps that impact a sale. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;3. Evaluate mistakes&lt;/b&gt; - Most teams never set aside weekly time to think through issues and come up with ideas for improvement. Most teams will meet at the beginning of the project and again at the end of the project but good execution is a fluid process which is constantly changing.  Therefore it requires weekly if not daily meetings to think through issues that arise and come up with new ideas to get you to the goal.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;Tip: Set aside 30 minutes one day a week. The agenda is 10 minutes to flush out issues, 10 minutes to brainstorm solutions and ideas for improvement, 10 minutes to turn those ideas into tasks and assigning them to people with due dates.   &lt;a href="http://asana.com"&gt;Asana.com&lt;/a&gt; is excellent tool for keeping track of issues, ideas for improvement and tasks.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;4. Agenda Mistakes&lt;/b&gt; - Many teams forget to set aside time to plan out when they will work on the tasks that come up in step 3.  It seems silly to set aside time for setting aside time, but it&amp;rsquo;s critical for good execution.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;Tip:  Set aside 30 minutes every Sunday night or Monday morning to schedule time in your calendar for the week to work on the tasks that need to get done. Then set up 15 minutes at the beginning of each day to make sure you still have the right amount of time scheduled to get everything done. Giving yourself shorter time slots will force you to work on the project and get it done, so 30 minute or hour time slots are usually more productive than say 2 or 3 hour time slots.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;5. Take Care of Business Mistakes&lt;/b&gt; - Work at every company is always a bit chaotic.  There are constantly &amp;ldquo;fires&amp;rdquo; that need to be put out and team members, customers, bosses pulling you in many different directions at the same time.  BUT that goal you set is more important so you have to be disciplined to prioritize and stick to your scheduled time slots and stay focused during those time slots to do the work.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;Tip: Schedule time in your calendar to work on the unplanned but urgent stuff “fires” that always happens at work.  When someone comes to you in the middle of your scheduled time to work on your tasks that relate to your goal you can politely let them know when you will work on the “fire” they just brought to you.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;In closing, knowing what you need to do and having the discipline to do it are two different things.  The above process takes a tremendous amount of discipline to stick to day in and day out.  If you find yourself skipping a step or two for a couple weeks, don&amp;rsquo;t beat yourself up, it happens to everyone.  Just get back up, dust yourself off and grind it out because the positive results you&amp;rsquo;ll get from the process will fuel you with energy to stick to the process and eventually these 5 steps will turn into habits.  Once they become habit it get’s easier to stick with it and consistently achieve world class execution.&lt;/p&gt;</description><link>https://joncarder.com/post/148252892180</link><guid>https://joncarder.com/post/148252892180</guid><pubDate>Sun, 31 Jul 2016 10:07:05 -0700</pubDate></item><item><title>THE FORMULA TO CREATE A TRILLION DOLLAR ONLINE TO OFFLINE INDUSTRY</title><description>&lt;p&gt;The unfulfilled promises of online to offline have left us all a bit deflated. It seemed like such a perfect fit, everyone is online and 93% of commerce is still offline, just connect the two worlds and a massive O2O industry will be born! We&amp;rsquo;ve heard this message at every conference since Hootie and the Blowfish were actually popular. So why hasn&amp;rsquo;t this taken off; what&amp;rsquo;s the holdup?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In order to understand what has gone wrong you have to understand the three core elements that need to be done right in order to create a massive O2O industry.&lt;!-- more --&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;

The offer &lt;/b&gt;- Something that motivates consumers to make a purchase at an offline business.

&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;

The Tracking&lt;/b&gt; - How the consumer redeems the offer and how the offline business tracks where it originated from.

&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;

The Monetization&lt;/b&gt; - How online companies make money by driving consumers to offline businesses.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;The Offer:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Groupon and LivingSocial almost cracked the code of O2O. They were so close you could taste it, and boy did the copy cats come out in droves. The fact that Google, Facebook, Amazon, Yelp and thousands of other online companies all started a daily deal website in the same year is unprecedented. The O2O gold rush had begun! You could smell the greed in the air, and it topped out with Groupon’s $20B public valuation just 3 years after launch, making Groupon the fastest growing business in history. But today Groupon is worth less than 10% of that value ($1.75 billion as of 1/10/16) and there is a graveyard full of failed daily deal sites. So what happened? They screwed up the offer.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Daily deal sites frequently used a 50% off offer. That motivated online consumers by the truckload but wasn&amp;rsquo;t sustainable for the offline businesses. The offer has to walk a fine line of motivational for consumers and sustainable for businesses. Daily deals were like a &amp;ldquo;steroid&amp;rdquo; pumping up businesses fast but then leaving them with a small&amp;hellip; um&amp;hellip; number of returning customers. What actually works is an &amp;ldquo;exercise program&amp;rdquo;, like a 10-20% offer that won&amp;rsquo;t drive in as many consumers but will ensure the business has a sustainable marketing source.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;The Tracking:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Most tracking solutions to connect the online world to the offline world didn&amp;rsquo;t gain traction because they have friction that prevents them from becoming ubiquitous. By friction, I mean anything that requires additional behaviors for either the online consumer (showing a coupon, scanning a QR code, checking in etc.) or the offline business (installing new hardware, modifying their POS system, or training their staff on a new app).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Daily deals had heavy friction in their tracking because they used the old fashioned coupon.  Even in a digital form, coupons have friction because the consumer has to show the coupon to the staff, which can get awkward on a business lunch or Tinder date. Coupons also require friction on the business owner&amp;rsquo;s part to track the coupons and train staff how to redeem them.   &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The reason this friction didn&amp;rsquo;t stop daily deals is because the &amp;ldquo;juice was worth the squeeze&amp;rdquo;.  Consumers and businesses alike will put up with friction as long as the reward is worth the pain the friction caused. The higher the reward, the more friction people will put up with. In the case of daily deals the promise of thousands of new customers was enough for businesses to deal with the hassle of coupons, and for consumers the 50% offer was so compelling that they didn&amp;rsquo;t mind using a coupon. But once you bring the offer into a more sustainable place like 10-20% off, suddenly the friction needs to be less or consumers just won&amp;rsquo;t bite.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Thankfully there are new technologies and data emerging that can remove the friction. Here at Empyr we have formed a direct partnership with Visa, MasterCard, and American Express so the offline transaction can be tracked using what we all already use to pay, any debit or credit card. This makes it frictionless for both consumers and businesses. Adios friction!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;The Monetization:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The last piece is pretty simple, you need to create a way for online companies to make money by marketing offline offers. Daily deals monetization strategy paid out about 25% of the purchase price to the online company that marketed the offline offer. This was very compelling and is the reason why just about every consumer-facing internet company on the planet jumped into daily deals.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Here at Empyr we&amp;rsquo;ve created a similar monetization opportunity for O2O except this time the revenue share is more sustainable. The way it works is simple; offline businesses share a portion of the revenue they generate from a sale (usually around 10%) with the online company that drove in that sale. It&amp;rsquo;s a Pay Per Sale model for offline businesses and it&amp;rsquo;s a big revenue generator for the online companies because they make money on every offline purchase.  Unlike daily deals, Empyr offers are always on, so the online companies that promote these offers make less than a daily deal in the short term but more in the long term, again like an exercise program rather than a steroid.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;So just how big is this monetization opportunity?  According to the US Chamber of Commerce, 93% of all commerce is offline, or $4.5 trillion dollars per year.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;The Formula&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In summary, the formula for a trillion dollar O2O industry is:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;

A compelling offer for consumers that is sustainable for businesses, such as 10-20%

&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;

A frictionless way to track the offline purchases, such as using credit/debit card tracking

&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;

&lt;p&gt;It was the Spring of 2010 when I first stumbled on the concept of Game Mechanics. This idea that you could apply the “rules” that makes games like Monopoly so much fun to real world activities was fascinating. I decided to “gamify” restaurants for a couple reasons. First, I love to eat and drink at restaurants, maybe a little too much. Second, the “buy 10 get 1 free” punch card programs had been around since the stone age and are, well, kinda boring.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I wanted to make a restaurant game that was not only fun but dead simple, no checkins or scanning QR codes. Wouldn’t it be cool if all you had to do was what you already do, pay your bill with a debit or credit card? It took the early Mogl team of Jeff Federman, Jarrod Cuzens and about 7 others a little over a year to build the first Mogl prototype complete with credit card tracking and a game based around competing with other patrons to win monthly cash jackpots based on how much cash-back you earned. Mogl was born on March 20th 2011.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;1 month after we launched I went on the Summit Series cruise, one of the most inspirational weekends of my life. While on the cruise &lt;!-- more --&gt; I saw Blake mcousky from Tom’s Shoes talk about the one for one model. It was a no brainer to add a one for one model to Mogl where every time you eat out we donate a meal to a local food bank. This was an awesome addition to the Mogl game and ended up being on of my favorite components. Life was good at Mogl, we were growing like crazy. We expanded from San Diego to LA and then San Francisco. We had over 700 restaurants in San Diego, that’s 1 in 6 restaurants participating which had never been done before. The revenues looked just like a hockey stick and we were feeling pretty good.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I decided to take the company to a food bank one day to make our meal for a meal program come to life. It was an amazing day. Volunteering your time to help others is incredibly rewarding. The whole team was pumped and we went out for drinks afterwards and had one of the best nights of bonding as a company we’ve ever had. I came back to work the next day fired up about food banks and how our meal for a meal program was really making a difference. I started researching the hunger problem in the US and my excitement quickly turned to sadness.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I was blown away with what I found. 50 million American’s suffer from hunger, what!?! On average they miss 16 meals a month and the majority of those effected are children. 1 in 5 kids in the US are meal insecure. It was hard to believe. And to make matters worse the US ranks last out of all advanced economy countries on food insecurity according to the IMF. Basically we have failed to take care of those who can’t afford 3 meals a day.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I also learned that there is enough food for everyone but we throw away 30% of the food produced in America. If we could just get the food to those in need before it goes bad we could fix this problem. If you break it down it’s basically a distribution problem and food banks can solve it if they had enough money. They can deliver a meal to someone in need for around 20 cents because they get food donated from corporations, farmers and grocery stores. The problem is Food Banks are using the old school method of asking people for money. This is somewhat effective but it’s not enough. In any given city Food Bank donations are providing 20% - 50% of the meals needed.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The government wasn&amp;rsquo;t going to solve the problem and Mogl’s meal for a meal program wasn’t even scratching the surface. But, what if we let people donate their cash-back? That 10% cash-back could be 10 - 100 meals every time they ate out. Would people donate? What if we gamified it? What if we made it fun to fight hunger? What if we made it social so you could invite friends and play along with them, maybe even compete against them to see who could donate the most meals? Once that idea popped up it was like taking the red pill in the matrix, there was no getting it out of our heads.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So we’ve been working like crazy for the last 10 months to completely redesign everything from the ground up. We’re launching the new app and website today and it’s packed with cool features. &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;The head of an entrepreneur is a lonely place.  Am I smart enough?  Do I work hard enough?  Is my idea right?  Do I have what it takes?  How do I stack up against other entrepreneurs?  Do I have the best team?  Are we better than the competition?  What will this all look like in a year from now?  What if I fail?&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;But no matter how confident you are there will always be fear.  The entrepreneurs who pound their chests and seem to fear nothing are the most insecure of them all.  We all have to deal with fear; there are no exceptions to the rule.  Knowing we all have to deal with the same thing can be comforting. We are not alone and those insecure voices are just part of being human. The trick is to harness the fear.  If harnessed correctly and balanced with optimism, hope and a clear vision for the future you will achieve your dreams.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;So what does harness fear actually mean?  Fear can manifest in many forms such as insecurity, doubt, hopelessness and paranoia.  The entrepreneur x factor is the ability to recognize fear and instead of ignoring it you use it to your advantage.  Fear comes from your instincts and it’s really just trying to help you survive.  Fear can produce two critical components of success; energy and enlightenment.  &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Fear = Energy&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Fear is the #1 human motivator, above sex believe it or not.  Use fear to drive forward.  Fear can give you that extra boost of energy when you need to overcome an obstacle. Similar to how the best athletes and soldiers perform better under stress.  Fear can also cause you to freeze up or run away. Some people can naturally harness fear to perform better, for others it takes practice.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Fear = Enlightenment&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Out of fear comes awareness.  Fear is effective at shinning a light on areas that need your focus.  Where is the fear coming from?  Listen to fear as it can point out areas that need improvement or understanding.  Knowledge alone will eliminate fear in many cases.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I just got my Kindle Fire last week.  Then I ordered 3 more, one for my roommates birthday and one for each of my parents.  At $199 this is a sexy no brainier and it&amp;rsquo;s already the #1 selling product on Amazon and has been since launch 6 weeks ago.  Unfortunately they don&amp;rsquo;t release their numbers but those numbers are going to be big.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The real magic behind the Fire is how seamless it is to buy digital movies, books, magazines, music and apps.  I spent over $30 within the first hour&lt;!-- more --&gt; on the device renting a movie, buying a book and several apps, all with just 1 to 2 clicks.  Even my tech un-savvy Dad was buying away when I showed him my Kindle. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Where the iPad is great for creating, the Kindle is great for consuming.  And all that digital content consumption is going to bring in serious revenue and profits for Amazon.  The fact that the Kindle Fire is both sexy and affordable will ensure tens of millions of people end up using it to purchase tons of digital content. &lt;/p&gt;

Google buries Online Yellow Pages and Review Sites</title><description>&lt;p&gt;Today Google is rolling out a new search result design (see screen shot below) that puts business listings from it&amp;rsquo;s Google Places, formerly Google Maps, above almost all other search results when consumers perform a local search like Dentist in San Diego, or San Francisco Plumber. Google Places is a local business directory competing with Yelp.com, YellowPages.com, MojoPages.com and a dozen or so other business directories.   In this bold move Google Places takes over 70% - 100% of the results you&amp;rsquo;ll see when you do a local search. There are still links to Yelp and others but they are buried at the bottom of the Places listings and most consumers won&amp;rsquo;t notice them.  Is this a good move for consumers?  Or should Google show a smaller set of listings from Google Places and show links to other directories on a more even basis?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Google has been systematically taking over more and more of the real-estate on local search results.  &lt;!-- more --&gt;A few years ago they launched the &amp;ldquo;7 pack&amp;rdquo; which showed 7 Google Maps listings at the top of results and pushed all other results from local business directories below the fold.  It was an aggressive move but it did a decent job of showing what Google thought was the best businesses while leaving room for other directories so consumers had options. The reason the 7 pack didn&amp;rsquo;t revolutionize the industry is because most people would skip over the 7 pack and click on a directory like Yelp or MojoPages because, well, most consumers prefer these other directories&amp;rsquo; user-experience over Google when looking for the best local businesses.  Just like people prefer other comparison shopping engines to Google&amp;rsquo;s Froogle in most cases.  But consumers are creatures of habit so they start and Google and then navigate to their favorite websites.  Is it &amp;ldquo;evil&amp;rdquo; for Google to use mostly their own business results from Places or is it their right?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Well see how other online directories along with consumers respond to this shift. &lt;/p&gt;

CHECK!</title><description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;figure class="tmblr-full" data-orig-height="193" data-orig-width="500"&gt;&lt;img src="https://64.media.tumblr.com/4812eae02e3e827284512a21f8512fac/0e278513b25f22f1-e7/s540x810/08d3c031f85c9b7e972913a9095d76dab0990dcf.png" data-orig-height="193" data-orig-width="500"/&gt;&lt;/figure&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Ever since I saw that magical picture hanging on my cabin wall at summer camp in junior high I&amp;rsquo;ve had a dream to surf a big wave. The picture was of Laird Hamilton surfing a huge wave which looked unbelievable.  I remember telling my cabin mates it was probably computer generated because no one could survive falling on a wave that big.  Well clearly I was wrong and as I got older I realized people around the world were surfing huge waves and not only surviving but enjoying some of the most amazing experiences nature has to offer.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;About three years ago I decided to make my dream a reality and set a goal to surf a 30 foot wave before I die.  The only problem is I&amp;rsquo;d been running companies for the last 7 years, I was out of shape and hardly surfed a dozen times a year.  Most people who brave huge waves are in incredibly good shape and have worked their way up to surfing big waves through 1000&amp;rsquo;s of hours in the water.  I was getting into something way out of my skill level and fitness level and it happened to have a severe consequence attached, death.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;But I do have one asset on my side, an incredibly naive sense of optimism.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Fast forward through 3 years of tow surf training, 72 special lung capacity and muscle workouts, $20,000 of blown cash on equipment and travel and you end up at last night.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Here I am in my car, my tow partner Martin next to me, the jet ski in tow and all the equipment piled in the back.  We&amp;rsquo;re pulling up to the Mexican border, our goal is to get down to a hotel and leave early in the morning for the island of Todos Santos (an island 8 miles of the coast of Ensenada which has some of the biggest waves on the planet).  As we approach the security check point they sent us to be searched, most likely because of the jet ski.  A lady approached the window and asked if I had proof of registration for the jet ski.  Oops, forgot that one at home.  She then walked over to the supervisor who proceeded slowly over to the car and coldly notified us we&amp;rsquo;d have to turn around and go back to the US.  If we did turn around it would ruin the entire trip because it was already almost 10PM and with the Mexican drug cartel hijacking tourist at gun point on a regular basis after midnight we wouldn&amp;rsquo;t risk heading down to the hotel any later than it already was.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;After a little begging and showing them 3 year old copy of an expired registration for an entirely different jet ski they suddenly let us pass.  We were pretty ecstatic and a little shaky from the adrenaline which was already starting to pump.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The night time drive down to Ensenada was sketchy.  I was constantly checking my mirror for police cars (the cartel dress as police, hijack you at gun point, steal your car and if you&amp;rsquo;re lucky they drop you in a ditch somewhere alive).  It didn&amp;rsquo;t help that my passenger Martin was describing in detail a news story he saw on TV about an entire family that had just been hijacked on the very same road we were on.  We decided we wouldn&amp;rsquo;t pull over for anything and just drove like a bat out of hell for the hotel.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;When we get to the hotel it was all sold out, we had tried to make reservations but they never picked up the phone so we decided they&amp;rsquo;d probably have rooms and we went for it, I mean what hotel sells out in Mexico in this economy?  I guess Hotel Coral does. So we snuck into the parking garage and slept in the car.  Slept is a strong word, it was more like an uncomfortable nap.  We got up at 4:30 AM, drove over to the dock and put the jet ski in the water.  It was windy and choppy which made for a rough and freeeeezing 8 mile jet ski ride to Todos Santos. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt; When we got to the Todos Santos it was still dark outside and the island was covered in a spooky fog.  The waves were big, bumpy and scary and we were the only ones there.  I remember thinking &amp;ldquo;this is crazy, what was I thinking that I could just will myself to surf a monster wave, I could die out here.  Maybe we should just go back and blame it on the bad weather.&amp;quot;  I was scared to death. Just then another two surfers on a jet ski showed up, they drove up next to us and just said &amp;quot;pretty meaty, huh?&amp;rdquo;. Then drove off towards the waves.  That didn&amp;rsquo;t help.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We watched them catch a couple waves.  We didn&amp;rsquo;t want to admit it but we had no idea what we were doing out here.  We watched and learned from our unsuspecting teachers.  We then decided to go for it, we couldn&amp;rsquo;t put in all this effort and turn back now.  So I jumped in the frigged water and martin started up the jet ski.  We headed towards the waves.  The closer we got to the waves, the bigger and louder they got.  I think I peed myself, but at this point there was no turning back.  It was so loud that even if I yelled to Martin to stop he probably wouldn&amp;rsquo;t hear me.  And then it happened.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A wave started to build behind me.  A wave bigger than anything I&amp;rsquo;d ever been on before.  It was more like a mountain growing right under my feet, that also happened to be moving very fast.  I let go of the tow rope and the power of the wave hurled me down the wave faster than I&amp;rsquo;d ever gone on a surfboard before and the mountain was now turning into an avalanche of water about to crush me.  I turned towards the shoulder to avoid getting smashed and I saw this huge wall of water before me and then suddenly realized I was actually surfing a 30 foot wave.  It was like time slowed down just enough for me to take it all in before my adrenaline kicked back in and I surfed my heart out to make it to the channel where I could be safely picked up.  The smile on my face when Martin brought the jet ski over to pick me up was from ear to ear.  I had done it, I had achieved my dream and it felt really damn good.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We continued to surf for another 4 hours, taking turns driving one another into waves.  As the day progressed it got sunnier and the waves even got a little bigger.  The wave sizes varied from 25 to 40 feet on some freak sets.  The entire day was surreal.  I hadn&amp;rsquo;t really had any big wipeouts, that is until my last wave.  I came over the top of the wave thinking I was in the channel only to see a bomb set wave over 30 feet about to break nearly right on my head.  I tried to swim into the channel but quickly realized there was no way I was going to make it.  So I took one huge gasp of air and prepared to get destroyed.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Again time slowed, but this time the inner feeling was entirely different.  It was like I was wrestling with the fact that I might die and questioning if I was really prepared for this. At this point there was nothing I could do, I was completely at the mercy of nature.  Then before I knew it the wave smashed into me and drove me deep into it&amp;rsquo;s chaotic whitewater.  It felt like four sumo wrestlers each had one of my limbs and their sole mission was to rip me apart.  It seemed like I was underwater for an eternity, I learned later I got dragged about 300 yards underwater and in the process completely freaked out my tow partner who thought I was dead.  Luckily all the training paid off and I was able to hold my breath for the entire time without panicking.  Although I&amp;rsquo;m not sure I could have lasted much longer, I was at the breaking point.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;All in all it was an amazing experience.  I&amp;rsquo;ve just had on of the best days of my life.  I&amp;rsquo;m completely drained from all the adrenaline and lack of sleep.  Time to hit the sack.  Special thanks to Martin Grunburg (my fearless tow partner) and his wife for letting him come out with me on Valentines day. :)&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Never give up.&lt;/b&gt; In my career I have missed payrolls, been behind on payments for every one of my credit cards and, at one point, had amassed more than $12,000 in overdraft fees at $20 each.  Looking back I can see that these were all stepping stones for me to achieve financial independence.  It&amp;rsquo;s tempting to quit when your financial situation is looking bleak, but as Thomas Edison said &amp;ldquo;&lt;i&gt;Many of life&amp;rsquo;s failures  					are people who did not realize how close they were to  					success when they gave up.&amp;rdquo;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;!-- more --&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Befriend well networked people.&lt;/b&gt; Become close to well-networked people and suddenly you will gain access to well-developed networks. I found my CFO, two key advisors and a primary investor from one well-networked lawyer. Return the favor and do whatever you can to help these people, a one-sided relationship won&amp;rsquo;t last.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Surround yourself with experts in areas where you are not an expert.&lt;/b&gt; I always surround myself with the smartest people I can find. Spend at least 25% of your time searching for these people. Never stop searching, everyone is a potential employee.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Entrepreneur/Business groups are a superb resource (e.g. EO, Master Minds, Vistage).&lt;/b&gt; These groups allow you to learn from others&amp;rsquo; experiences. You can avoid serious headaches and stress by learning from other people&amp;rsquo;s mistakes. You also gain insight into what the successful people are doing that their competitors are not.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Stay balanced so that you remain creative and your brain functions at 100 %.&lt;/b&gt; Take vacations at least three times a year and rarely work on weekends.  You&amp;rsquo;ll be more effective if you do. Read the &lt;a href="https://www.stephencovey.com/7habits/7habits-habit7.php"&gt;Sharpen The Saw &lt;/a&gt;story for more on this subject. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Constantly seek new ways to grow your business. &lt;/b&gt;I changed the way Client Shop attracted customers every six months. From pay-per-click marketing to e-mail to affiliate programs to partnerships with marketing companies to offline marketing to an in-house call center to an oversees call center. The reason for doing this: competitors will catch onto your strategies and tactics. What once worked will no longer work. You always need to stay one step ahead.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Generate Creative Ideas Consistently &lt;/b&gt;– Take time every week to read, listen or watch some type of information pertaining to your specific business, sales or marketing. I often find when I&amp;rsquo;m reading a magazine, marketing article, book, blog or even watching a movie on business is when my ideas to improve the business are born.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Motivate your team.&lt;/b&gt; Hold pep rallies / weekly meetings to pump up your troops and keep everyone accountable.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Have Goals, Scoreboards and Top Priorities&lt;/b&gt; – Everyone in the organization should have a monthly goal that directly effects their departments goal that directly effects the companies #1 goal.  A goal should be stated as we are here right now, we want to be here by the end of the month, so X to Y by Date.  There should be a visible scoreboard that anyone can see at any time.  There should be individual planners that management reviews weekly to ensure each employee is accomplishing their top priorities.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/li&gt;

Many entrepreneurs get caught attacking multiple ideas. &lt;/ol&gt;</description><link>https://joncarder.com/post/242741552</link><guid>https://joncarder.com/post/242741552</guid><pubDate>Fri, 13 Nov 2009 09:56:00 -0800</pubDate></item><item><title>MP3.com - How Michael Robertson made $350M</title><description>&lt;p&gt;I spent the weekend at &lt;a href="http://www.michaelrobertson.com"&gt;Michael Robertson&lt;/a&gt;&amp;rsquo;s Ranch.  He is one of San Diego&amp;rsquo;s most successful Internet entrepreneurs.  He sold MP3.com for over $350M, he also started Lindows (Linux based windows), MP3Tunes.com (cloud based music) and Gizmo5 (voip).  There are rumors floating around that Michael sold the domain name MP3.com for $350M, got lucky and never built a great company.  That is, well, just a rumor.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;What people don&amp;rsquo;t know unless they get a chance to talk to Michael is he built a great company, one that was exploding in organic traffic and revenue before it was purchased.  We all know that to generate explosive organic traffic and revenue you need a lot more than just a great domain name.&lt;!-- more --&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The story he tells is very entertaining.  Back in the early days of the Internet he was watching for search terms that were growing in popularity.  He found the search word MP3 was gaining in popularity and bought it for around $1,000, which in 1996 was an expensive price.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;He didn&amp;rsquo;t even know what MP3s were or how to make a site around them but through trial and error he grew MP3.com into the #1 place for musicians to show off their music and for consumers to find great music, sort of the first Myspace.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The real secret of his success came from creating a network effect.  He allowed Bands to upload their music and have a custom website to host their music all for free (revolutionary back in the late 90&amp;rsquo;s).  They could even create a CD and sell it for whatever price they deemed necessary above the $5.00 cost of creating the CD. The network effect occurred when the bands would promote their music on MP3.com.  Michael gave them all their own URL&amp;rsquo;s like MP3.com/bandname.  The bands would have this URL on their business cards, email it to their fans, etc. and then the more fans that used the site the more bands that came on, and therefore a network effect was created.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;By giving his customers (the bands) total freedom and making the service free he empowered them to become an army of marketers bringing consumers to site by the millions.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;He was able to raise money from Sequoia and eventually sell the company not based on a domain name but based on this network effect.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Step 1&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Send out an email to all the people in your database letting them know that you are committed to keeping in better touch and if there is anything you can do for them &amp;ldquo;just let me know&amp;rdquo;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Step 2&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Plan your calendar in advance for keeping in touch throughout the year. If you don&amp;rsquo;t have someone at your company who can manage the fulfillment of this system you can outsource this to a mail-house. Example:&lt;b&gt;

Jeff took time to share some of his lessons learned from his career and his strategy for the Padres.  Here are a few tips he shared.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Set your goals according to your industry, not based on what the norms are. &lt;/b&gt; 
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;He believes sports teams can and should be cash flow neutral.  Neutral? I thought he was really setting the bar low.  But I learned that sports teams are almost never cash flow positive, but almost always cash flow negative.  So while I thought his goal seemed to be shooting low, for his industry that was a high mark. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Don&amp;rsquo;t micro manage, BUT hold people firmly to financial goals. &lt;/b&gt; 
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;He made his success sound so easy. &amp;ldquo;I just hire the right people, and hold them accountable to their financial goals, if they are good they will figure it out eventually.&lt;b&gt;&amp;rdquo;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;!-- more --&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;He was looking for a critical role for his company, he interviewed everyone in the baseball world to find a fit and yet they just weren&amp;rsquo;t happy with the potential candidates.  They did something unprecedented by going outside the baseball world and looked into candidates from Football, they found their man and he&amp;rsquo;s doing an amazing job. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Take care of customers and put resources on brand management. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;/b&gt; 
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;The Padres will be doing things unheard of in the baseball space like having a dedicated rep for every ticket season holder so they can have someone to call with issues or questions.  Another ground breaking move was he created a new position - VP of Brand Management, baseball team&amp;rsquo;s don&amp;rsquo;t have someone dedicated 100% to improving brand image.  What can you do that your competition is not?&lt;b&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
