Thankfully there’s Untappd, which is basically FourSquare for beer. But I wanted something more visual and tangible.

I embedded neodymium magnets into an 8″x4.5″ box I constructed, and covered it with a pine veneer. The magnets are strong enough to hold a buttload of caps. I think it’s more interesting to look at the resulting collage than to flip through pages of icons on a phone. Here it is in the wild.

By the way, I highly recommend using Untappd. The UI is a bit clunky, but it serves its purpose well and has just about every beer you could think of in its catalog.

A little over a year ago my wife got a job in South Carolina. So, we found a house to rent on Craiglist, packed up our things, and started driving. We had never been to South Carolina and had only seen four pictures of our new place, but we were newly married and figured “What the heck. We can be happy anywhere, right?”

Like true-blue Buffalonians, we immediately missed LaPorta’s pizza, Duff’s wings, Paula’s Donuts, and Wegmans. We also started craving things we never tried when we lived there—like Spaghetti Parmesan from Chef’s Restaurant, which we now make about once a month. But the beauty of moving somewhere new is getting to soak up local flavor, sights, sounds, and to do as the Romans do. Allowing a new set of experiences to recalibrate the way you view the world.

For me that means craft beer and baked goods (#carboloaded, sukka). Beer culture continues to explode and with Asheville, NC only an hour away it would be idiotic not to spend some quality time rubbing elbows with the locals over a couple pints.

For my wife it’s antiquing. She’s taken me all over this state, through some of the smallest towns I’ve ever seen, in search of the next Mid-Century modern piece to add to her collection.

These interests have led us to meet wonderful people and see beautiful places we would never otherwise found, like La Bouteille in Tryon, NC for beer and Shinola in Greenville, SC for antiques. The list of things we’ll miss from the Palmetto State if and when we move continues to grow. And that’s how I know we’re doing just fine.
