Now even PC exclusives are no match for the PS4’s enveloping storm.

Eidos Montreal Producer Stéphane Roy explained to VideoGamer that the PS4 version of Thief will compete graphically with gaming PCs. He said:

But for a visual aspect – especially for a game like Thief – it’s not a question of pushing more polygons, [or] now I can have 200 enemies at the same time and not just 100 enemies. So on our side, it’s more a question of gameplay, the movement, stuff like that. I think with the next-gen, yeah visually speaking, with the high-end PC and next-gen it’s going to be really, really close, honestly.

A representative from Square Enix went as far as to say the PS4 version is “almost identical” to its PC brother, a prospect that would signal the end of the series’ PC-exclusive notoriety.

When it comes to processing hundreds of units on-screen, not even great optimization can overcome incapable hardware. The PS4 has significantly increased processing power over its predecessors allowing it to offer experiences that are not only more visually stimulating, but larger in scope as well. The PS3 has dabbled with large-scale games (i.e. MAG and Dust 514) in the past, but graphical fidelity was compromised greatly to make it possible. Meanwhile, PCs have PlanetSide 2, a game that delivers epic battles with no tradeoffs, but even its exclusivity is in question now that Sony has an upcoming console capable of running it.

The PS4 won’t have to make compromises to deliver photo-realistic games. The framerate doesn’t have to be dropped to sub-30 like Killzone, and 1080p televisions will finally get their long-awaited use. While gamers will reap the benefits of new hardware, it’s the creative developers out there that are most excited. They can finally realize their vision and deliver it to more than just the PC crowd. It’s quite a feat by Sony when you consider one SKU will be sold that’s capable of playing anything on the market. The only question left is how much it’ll cost.

How do you think Sony feels?

Sony Group CEO Andrew House shared the company’s desire to allure more than just gamers with the PlayStation 4. He told Sun City:

I think the key is to have people — and increasingly women — with different sensibilities creating different games. It is not all about shoot ’em up games.

He added more to the mix:

The key is getting games developers — who are going to make the next Angry Birds — excited about the PS4. And they are.

If you look at the PS4’s confirmed launch library there is a heavy dose of titles that would appeal to the young male crowd; games such as Killzone: Shadow Fall, Deep Down and a console port of Diablo III. Then there’s The Witness and Knack. That’s really not enough to attract a sizable casual audience, especially if the console is going to be in the neighborhood of $399 to $499.

Lately, Sony has been hitting its stride with indie games, particularly with the Vita. Indie developers are finding out that Sony makes the publishing process favorable. This in-turn has broadened the appeal of PlayStation products in the past couple years. These games offer quick entertainment and a low price point that make the buying decision an easier process for those who might not play games all the time. Considering this has benefited Sony and customers alike, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where it doesn’t carry into the PS4.

Rumors make it appear that Microsoft will be going heavy on the casual-appeal next-gen, so if Sony wants to play the numbers game it’s going to have to continue to take strides to broaden its appeal. E3 is right around the corner and we all know the PS4 won’t only have a dozen or so games. There’s a lot left to reveal, and a lot of ladies to be converted to the PlayStation family. Sony, don’t let us down.

It was built exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS, a handheld with 128mb of RAM and a native resolution of 800 x 240. You’d think it’d turn out to be a big, blocky mess.

The final build images of its venture to current-gen consoles and PC hardware have been released, and they’re far beyond what many would expect. The recommended PC specs are actually quite high with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 chosen as the staple card to max out the game. For the PlayStation 3 it’s a title that blends in with most of its library, and looks much like the higher-quality HD Collections.

Below are the screenshots so you can see for yourself:

You can never have too many zombies. Even Sony knows that.

DayZ’s creator, Dean “Rocket” Hall, told EscapistMagazine that Sony has shown interest in bringing DayZ to the PlayStation 4, even going as far as meeting to discuss the possibility. He said:

It appears to be the kind of game that Sony are interested in, I think we just have to wait and see. We’ve talked and met with Sony, and they’re very – you know, they’re obviously interested.

For anyone with an interest in zombies DayZ is the ultimate video game. It’s a zombie apocalypse simulation of sorts where you get one life per character and can kill other players before stealing their loot. Though, they can do the same to you, so survival skills are a necessity. You’d think the genre would be prevalent but so far it has only made its way to PCs, and only a clunky mod (DayZ was an Arma 2 mod) and an extremely controversial, low rated game (The War Z) to show for it.

A standalone title for DayZ is currently in the works which is being referenced above. It’s being spearheaded by creator Dean Hall himself along with Bohemia Interactive, the company who made Operation Flashpoint and the Arma series. It’ll have much improved visuals, and will deal with some of the issues that weighed down the original, namely its floating shooting mechanics. Truthfully, it’d be a fantastic addition to the PS4, and would set the precedent that titles that were once thought of as PC exclusive can work on Sony’s new hardware.

Epic Games Vice President Mark Rein is more excited for the PlayStation 4 than just about anyone else on the planet. While speaking to CVG he said:

It’s like giving you the world’s best PC. ‘We’re going to make it super convenient, we’re going to make it easy for you to get games on there, we’re going to start the games running while you’re downloading them and we’re going to perform your updates in the background.’ You’re not going to turn this thing off… you’re just going to sleep it and it’s going to come back on.

He added:

The kind of stuff that they announced that they’re doing, the level of convenience and things like that… they’re making a really perfect gaming PC.

Epic currently has no confirmed releases for the PS4, but its upcoming engine, Unreal Engine 4, supports the platform. Its new engine is already being used as the foundation for Fortnite, which is presently PC exclusive. But the PS4 makes ports much easier than the PS3 ever did, and if it sells as well as analysts are expecting, it’d be a mistake for Epic not to share Fortnite with PlayStation’s install-base.

Sony appears to have learned from the few costly mistakes it made last generation, and has turned around to make something that benefits developers and consumers alike. If PS4 is as good as it looks, Sony can devote its time to further improving its capabilities rather than trying to dig itself out of a hole like it did with the PS3.

EA saw an opportunity to save people from the unreasonable fees of golf by making its first golf simulator in 1998, and since then it has seen a multitude of improvements, some of which have made the series more popular, while others disappear in short order. The series is now at its 16th iteration: Is it the well-oiled machine that it intends to be?

The campaign in Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 14 is where you’re likely to go after spending a couple minutes meditating to the main menu’s tranquil music. Before you can play you’ll have to create a character. Although just about everything can be defined for your custom golfer, from head size to testosterone levels, you’ll have to settle with a limited wardrobe until you increase in levels. One improvement made is being able to tweak the golfer swing style for your character, from shot shape to shot type. The selections made have ramifications on the greens, both good and bad, and add a sense of individuality to your custom golfer.

You begin by competing in small, amateur tournaments and must progress through the same process as real golf pros, eventually earning your PGA TOUR card and competing against the likes of famous golfers such as Rory McIlroy and even Tiger Woods himself. As you advance through the various stages and dabble with success, you’ll be treated to increasingly more professional settings. The amateur level carries the same flavor as a local broadcast, while the professional circuit provides realistic commentary and authentic, television style menus.

The road to the big leagues isn’t easy, though. A tutorial system—if you can even call it that—is provided when you first boot the game, but it doesn’t do much in the way of introducing some of the most important mechanics. It’ll teach you how to swing, and how to address spin, but there’s no explanation for lie, putting, or slope. Consequently, if you’re new you’ll have to learn the hard way: by losing in tournaments.

To help muffle some of the redundancy involved, there are rewards to be earned. After each round you’ll earn experience to increase your skills (putting, driving, accuracy, etc.), coins, clothing, and clubs. Placing points in the various skills has a profound impact on your ability to consistently score birdies and pars, so it’s exciting to finish a tournament and allocate the points where you feel will improve your game the most. Clothing and clubs are purely visual (outside of a few clubs which trade stats) but nothing beats going from looking like a cookie-cutter golf newbie to looking the part of a seasoned professional.

The caddy has been removed in Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 14, which is probably the result of EA Tiburon giving up on trying to make it a useful system. Nonetheless, it’s up to you to pick your shots, now. The swing system is the same as it was last year. You pull your analog stick back and then flick it forward. It sounds simple but it takes a lot of practice to hit well consistently; in other words, it simulates the delicacy of golf. For those inclined, there’s a new difficulty setting this year called Simulation. As its name implies, it punishes you to the highest degree and therefore is an attraction only for the daring.

Legends of the Majors is as refined as ever with some of the best golf moments remade in virtual form. Each moment has a primary objective which is difficult to recreate, as well as an easier objective for the faint of heart. The moments are made even more authentic through visual filters, and classic flavor. Golf fans will be enamored by the amount of detail put into each moment. This mode alone can be a primary attraction where fans spend 10 or more hours of their time.

Playing online is a fulfilled experience with up to 24 players supported. A fully-functional chat system keeps you connected with friends at all times, and you’ll even see live stats during both singleplayer and multiplayer loading screens. Outside of the larger player cap it’s still the same competitive outlet as in previous years. There are custom games, competitive lobbies, and plenty of options to show off your finger-flicking skills.

The visuals haven’t been treated with the makeover that the series is in need of. The courses and character models are reminiscent of games from earlier in the generation. On the plus side, the menus are more attractive and functional, but long and frequent loading times bring that down. Jim Nantz and David Feherty also bring the genuine presentation of golf to the greens, but it is frequently off the mark. For example, while attempting a putt for a demoralizing bogey Feherty will ecstatically mention that you’re going for a game-changing birdie. When you do nail a huge shot, such as an eagle, you’ll be rewarded with some half-hearted golf claps. EA should really take a hint from Hot Shots Golf with its spectacular moments and saved replays.

There are several new courses, such as Mission Hills and Oak Hill Country Club, and over a dozen of them are optional DLC (yes, they’re available at launch). The Historic Edition, which costs an additional $10 at retail, includes six courses, one of which is the famous 1934 version of Augusta National. The content included in the game is staggering, and a direct result of the series having yearly releases. Simply playing all of the courses in Career mode and trying out each Legends of the Majors challenges can take upward of 30 hours of your time.

Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 14 continues to be chiseled year after year. This time around it targets golf fans with its authentic, free-form gameplay. Those willing to endure a sharp learning curve are treated to the reward of feeling like a virtual golf pro. This year doesn’t bring the revamped title that the series is craving, but for now it’s enough to offer the most realistic golf experience on the market. To many, that’s enough to warrant the price of admission.

During the interview we discuss the challenges with going from MMO to FPS development, how CCP Games plans to differentiate DUST 514 from its older kindred EVE Online, as well as how the game will keep players coming back for more.

Jonathan: First off, thanks for taking the time to answer some questions. Would you mind stating your role in DUST 514‘s development?

Hi, thank you for the opportunity to speak to your readers. I am CCP_CmdrWang, and I am the Community Manager for DUST 514. Part of my work revolves around communicating news regarding DUST 514’s development to our player base. Another important responsibility that I have is to complete this feedback loop by reporting player comments back to our dev team.

I’m a big fan of EVE Online. Has an effort been made to retain the same genuine look and feel or are you looking to make DUST 514 form its own identity?

DUST 514 takes place in the same universe as EVE Online. It has the same 4 major factions or races, so that means the racial artistic styles will largely be retained in DUST 514. That being said, however, DUST will also have its unique art style when necessary so that it will maintain its own identity. For example with DUST, one of the challenges has been to establish a sense of human scale in a universe where “small” is the size of a B-52 bomber.

After being an MMORPG developer for nearly a decade, what’s been the most challenging part of moving to FPS?

Well, there is the change to a different platform i.e. PS3 and a change in genre as well going from more of a RTS MMO to a shooter MMO. Part of the challenge has been technical, i.e. how do you maximize resources available on a console and still achieve high visual quality and good frame rate. Another challenging aspect in the development is designing interesting and compelling game mechanics and features that will keep players engaged in the EVE universe via DUST 514. With DUST 514 being a sandbox type of game, it can get tricky to predict how a design feature will turn out when it gets into the hands of the community. Will it work out as intended, or will the players surprise us as they often do and take it down an entirely unforeseen path? But, these are the kinds of challenges that are interesting and rewarding.

How much of an advantage has it been to start with a universe you already created?

It is a huge advantage in that the two parts of the universe (EVE and DUST) complement each other so well. For years players in EVE have been able to only cruise the night skies above the planets of New Eden, never being able to touch the ground. Now, they will be able to visit those planets and take the human tapestry of EVE Online to new places and write new chapters. DUST 514 would certainly be a poorer experience without EVE Online’s expansive universe.

One of the greatest testaments to EVE Online is how it’s managed to keep a relatively consistent player base since 2003 with a monthly subscription fee. How do you plan to keep players around DUST514 in the long-run?

By giving our players the best, immersive MMO experience available of course! Our philosophy is “if you make it fun, people will come.” That has certainly been true with EVE Online and we are proud to continue this tradition.

How difficult has it been to balance the grind for more unlocks with instant gratification for the player?

Well, it’s certainly a complex challenge. It’s also something that we’re still working on right now. We’ve conducted various tests in the closed beta with the progression speed and will be conducting more with our next update. It’s something we keep a very close eye on and testing it “in the wild” gives us incredibly valuable data to help us continually improve the game.

We have a large number of different skills that the player is able to train. Some of these unlock new gear, some boost abilities, some improve gear performance. All these skills vary in how much time it will take you to level them, some can be improved quickly, other take considerably more time. The nice thing from a player perspective is that you have a lot of choice when picking a path through the progression system. You can go wide, picking up a broader range of different skills quickly at low levels or go deep, taking more time and specializing in a particular area.

EVE Online can be a very unforgiving game. What steps are you taking to ensure that new players stick around?

That is certainly true, and it is also part of its allure. We take many leaves from EVE Online’s playbook so to speak, and our goal is to offer as rich of a human interactive experience as EVE offers. Like EVE, we expect that it will be the friendships and rivalries that players develop in their trek through DUST 514 that will ultimately keep the community coming back for more. There are already groups forming with the goal to help introduce new arrivals to the ins and outs of DUST 514, and we are hopeful to see these groups evolve into deeper and bigger confederations as relationships are forged and sometimes broken. We are also planning for a NPE tutorial so that new comers can learn the ropes on their own if they wish.

Closed beta recently began. What’s the most surprising thing that you’ve learned from data during closed beta?

We are most impressed by how quickly and intensely the player community immersed themselves into the game. Many of the first beta testers understood how things worked very quickly and were able to take things beyond their design limits. This of course resulted in a positive feedback loop that allowed us to improve our designs and sometimes even to surprise the players back by how quickly we’ve addressed their concerns.

A lot of MMOs are moving toward free-to-play. Do you feel that the micro-transaction model will be a standard in the near future?

We certainly see a trend in the industry towards it.

Console gamers generally have a lot of reservations about free-to-play games. How do you hope to dispel these fears?

It is a valid concern. As with many systems, its success will depend on mutual cooperation, like a social contract with the understanding that we as developers and end users alike will not abuse the system.

Given that EA has been known for releasing Battlefield in two-year cycles there’s a high probability that it will come out in late 2013, which just so happens to be when analysts expect the new Sony and Microsoft consoles to come out.

Judging by the fact that a beta will be available for pre-ordering a current generation game, all signs point to the next Battlefield being for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but that would result in a missed opportunity. Unlike Call of Duty which has a tendency to play it safe with nice visuals that certainly wouldn’t make a top 10 list, Battlefield has always been about bringing the most realistic war experience to the video game industry, and that requires horsepower.

The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 struggle to run Battlefield 3 at moderate settings and have to resort to a capped framerate of 30 at 720p. Even more noticeable is the 24 player limit imposed on console versions of the game. Meanwhile, the PC version can host up to 64 players with some of the most realistic visuals on the market (as seen in the gameplay image above). Even if the game came out on both PS3 and PS4, they’d have to develop gameplay and multiplayer levels with the lowest common denominator in mind – current gen consoles.

There’s a good chance that whatever Sony and Microsoft are working on will be far less limited than the aging console hardware of today, and with that comes the potential for DICE to once again raise the bar dramatically. Battlefield 4 could be an exceptional way to show off new consoles with massive maps that don’t compromise detail. In essence, it’d be the perfect game for Jack Tretton to show off during a reveal trailer of the PlayStation 4.

Every new platform needs a quality multiplayer experience at launch to keep players coming back for more and Battlefield 4 certainly fits the bill. The question is whether or not EA wants to be a pioneer of the next generation.

It didn’t take long for a few major corporations to show interest, and rumored to be among them were Time Warner and Microsoft. While Time Warner or really any other company taking a deal would make headlines, a buyout from Microsoft would send a shockwave across the video game industry, and more importantly make Sony’s job a lot more difficult.

First off let’s look at what Activision Blizzard is and what Microsoft would inherit. Activision Blizzard was the result of an $18.8 billion move a few years ago that absorbed Activision into Vivendi Games, a French conglomerate that has influence in all kinds of media. The result was the unification of two of the industry’s most productive publishers under one parent company.

Properties under the umbrella of Activision Blizzard all share one thing in common: they’re immensely popular. StarCraft and WarCraft, two of PC gaming’s most prominent, are included as is Guitar Hero. Each of those three alone have sold over 10 million units each, let alone Call of Duty which breaks records on a yearly basis and, importantly, helps shift consoles. Whoever owns Activision Blizzard essentially owns the most powerful military of games in the entire industry.

As with any opportunity that has a lot of potential for profits the buy-in isn’t cheap. Reports state that it would cost Microsoft $8.1 billion if it wanted to go through with the deal. But remember, this is the company that owns Xbox Live and Windows so it isn’t kidding about being interested. You can be sure that management in the gaming division of Microsoft are thinking in the back of their heads what this could mean for their battle for the largest footprint in the gaming industry.

Lately, Microsoft has been banking on the experience of Xbox Live, occasional releases of Gears of War and Halo, and Call of Duty advertising to keep Sony in-check. The craziest thing is it has worked for numerous years now, but it’s really starting to slip among core gamers. There’s no denying that the Xbox family of products could use something new to drive into the next generation, and the full force of Activision Blizzard behind it would help immensely.

If Microsoft were to purchase Activision Blizzard chances are we’d see a radical shift with its gaming division. Merely associating big games like Call of Duty and Guitar Hero with Microsoft could make a major impact on the gaming landscape. Call of Duty has routinely sold multitudes more on Xbox 360 than the PlayStation 3 just because of advertising and labeling. Similar moves with a wider array of products could be devastating to multiplatform sales on PlayStation.

Don’t forget that the PlayStation Vita can also be impacted. Call of Duty is potentially the most important game for the Vita’s future since it’s a popular series that showcases the Vita’s hardware. Although a deal might not impact this year’s Call of Duty, subsequent releases would probably be pulled in an effort for Microsoft to devote resources to other avenues.

One of the most fruitful acquisitions that could be made is with Activision’s Skylanders series. It might not hold a lot of weight with gamers, but the game is the best selling title of the entire year and over 30 million toys have been sold within only a year of Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure releasing. Exclusive content, marketing, and bundles could come in effect to give Microsoft a huge edge with the young demographic and allure families that otherwise would have otherwise considered PlayStation for its multimedia capabilities.

However, it isn’t just the well-known Activision games that can make things more difficult for Sony. Diablo III is supposed to move to consoles in the near future, but Microsoft could very well turn the tables and deny PlayStation owners the chance of playing one of 2012’s best PC games. Also, Blizzard has been hard at work on Project Titan which is supposed to be its next premier MMO. No details have been revealed, but if it has potential to grace consoles, you can bet that Microsoft wouldn’t give Sony the light of day.

On the positive side, Microsoft parading around making Activision Blizzard games exclusive might sound plausible, but ultimately it’s all about making money. Spiting Sony by stealing games and making them exclusive might sound great for hardware numbers, but missing out on the massive PlayStation install base (as well as Nintendo) would greatly damage the profitability of Activision, and make the investment a very risky move.

It’s challenging to think of a single good thing that could come out of the deal, and that’s what makes it so frightening. Microsoft has a history of buying competition and has purchased a fine list of successful studios. Once upon a time Lionhead, Rare, and Ensemble weren’t owned by Microsoft and each had hits that ranged from Age of Empires to GoldenEye 007. However, several of these companies have gone from glory to dust after being taken under Microsoft’s wing. It makes you wonder what would happen to Activision Blizzard’s best games if Vivendi were to sign the dotted line.

One thing any corporation hates is being at the mercy of a competitor, and that’s exactly what would happen if Vivendi and Microsoft were to strike a deal. Sony has lost exclusives in the past, so it’s no stranger to bad news, but this is a completely different animal. Microsoft owning a lion’s share of the largest gaming publisher in the world is a big proposition, and one that offers nothing but trouble for the world of PlayStation and gamers alike.

I came in expecting another solid addition to the series, but nothing could have prepared me for the radical new additions that Dead Space 3 is bringing.

The first thing I noticed is that Dead Space 3 is no longer bound by the iron corridors of its predecessors. Instead, nearly the entire demonstration was shown in a frigid environment layered with icy halls, dark facilities, and expansive outdoor environments littered with snow. The outdoor areas displayed the beautiful frontier that the game will traverse meanwhile leaving Isaac Clarke feeling more alone than ever before. Well, almost anyway, because the addition of co-op for the first time in the series’ history was shown in full force.

Co-op was the highlight of the demo and what made me want to grab a controller and play. After the demonstrator died during a battle with a large creature, a second player dropped seamlessly into the action to help out. His addition altered the cut-scene sequences and presented a level of teamwork that the series has never seen before. Firing a well-timed stasis bolt before both players unloaded on an enemy weak point made me giddy with excitement. The first thing that came to mind was playing on harder difficulties and utilizing voice communication to become the hunter instead of the hunted.

What was most impressive is that a total of three large-scale encounters were shown during the live demonstration all within a 20-25 minute period. All three were not only visually impressive but challenging as well, and the addition of co-op brought out their full potential. Each encounter appeared daunting at first, but the use of teamwork, a powerful arsenal, and the game’s new gameplay mechanics spelled doom for anyone—or anything—that stood in the way.

Speaking of which, Dead Space 3 has two new major gameplay additions including a cover system and roll mechanic. That might sound derivative, but it’s the way that Visceral Games is implementing them that makes them extremely positive additions. The cover system is extremely dynamic and unlike the ‘magnetic cover’ we’ve seen in previous years it looks completely natural. When either player would pull out a weapon near cover the in-game character would intelligently utilize the nearby environment to provide safety from enemies. In addition, the roll mechanic rewarded each player for good timing by exposing enemy weaknesses.

The most important thing that I learned from the Dead Space 3 demo is that it will use the best qualities from the previous two releases and combine them with some of its own magic. There was plenty of immersive audio, several gruesome creatures, and familiarly beautiful visuals. But then there was also a great cover system, gorgeous new environments, and a co-op mode that stunned an audience of over 25 people. Visceral Games has the formula for one of the best survival-horror games of next year.

Dead Space 3 is set to release in February 2013.
