Jeff Robb's 'Three Acts of Will'

I caught Jeffrey Robb's recent exhibition "Three Acts of Will" on the last day of its run at the Londonnewcastle Project Space in Shoreditch. This immense, cavernous space was apparently crammed to bursting at the Private Views but I am glad I managed to see it in the company of Jeff alone. The exhibition has a spiritual quality to it that makes one speak in lowered tones and the combination of intense light and colours in Jeff's work with the extraordinary audio composed by John Was has an almost church like feel to it. If I had had more than an hour on the meter I could happily have spent all afternoon there, lost in blissful reverie.

The first room you enter, 'Genius Loci', contains a group of inverted pyramid shapes, like giant icicles suspended in the air. Created from lenticular panels, the imagery appears both within and outside the structures and is animated by an ever-changing video projected from tiny units in the gallery ceiling, taking the temperature from icy black and white to satanic red, and introducing a kaleidoscope of moving colours that also plays on the gallery floor to mesmerising effect.

In the second room, 'Liminal States', the works are more traditionally square in format but double sided and lit from all around with a strip of LEDs. The figurative imagery shifts shape from angelic to demonic. Glowing squares of light suspended in the void.

In the third room, 'Coming into Being' banner-like constructions animate images of Jeff's son, drawn by his artist father, Tom Robb, the child's voice incorporated into the soundtrack.

Of course none of this is actually holographic despite what all the media insist on calling it - not that I'm particularly bothered. Jeff's "holographic sculptures" are just what people want holograms to be and without doubt are pushing the boundaries of anything I have ever seen done with lenticulars. If holography has yet to really make an impact in the realms of Fine Art, and lenticulars are still dogged by that 'winky postcard' association, this exhibition should have permanently disabled the 'naff-ometer' of anyone who managed to see it. It just goes to show that it isn't the medium that is responsible for the bad reputation it sometimes has, just the occasional dodgy practitioner, which Jeff Robb certainly isn't.

HOLOGRAMS 2 in Rugby

Almost 4 years after 'HOLOGRAMS, the first 60 years' showed there, curators at the Rugby Art Gallery & Museum, in the city where Dennis Gabor conceived of holography, invited me back to exhibit a selection from the follow-up show 'HOLOGRAMS 2'.

The gallery could not accommodate all the transmission works I exhibited at other venues but we selected 40 of the best pieces by an international body of holographers, including pulsed portraiture, multi-colour reflection and rainbow holograms, and groups of full colour Denisyuk and Digital works.

Exhibited for the first time were two pieces by Paula Dawson, made in association with Geola,

and a stunning full colour Jewel Box by Colour Holographic.

Steve Benton's 'Crystal Beginnings' was the poster image so I included a small embossed portrait of Steve at the introduction of the Rainbow holograms section.

And, as usual, I filled a couple of display cases with examples of applied holography. This time one was devoted to embossed holograms and another to dichromate and photopolymer

Escher hologram project

The work of M.C.Escher has always appealed to holographic artists and designers, and it is not hard to see why.

Two of my favourite examples are the 'Escher Staircase' produced by Graham Tunnadine for Applied Holographics ,

and Dominic Welby's 'Lizards',

both from the late 1980s.

And of course there is Steve Benton's sublime 'Rind II', from 1978.

Now there is a new Kickstarter project, 3-D Holographic Designs inspired by Escher, from Javid Khan's Edinburgh-based company Holoxica.

So far, Holoxica has specialised in medical and scientific imaging, though one of their more recent projects, the remarkable Rhind Mummy hologram, has taken them into the museum world.

This new venture would apply the digital holographic imaging process to consumer products - holograms for the home - and Holoxica envisage a range of images in sizes from 10 x10cm up to 30 x 30 cm with lightsources to match. By pledging funds now you can hope to receive

one or more of these new holograms before they are rolled out to the general public.

The following image, 'Starfield' is an example of what they have in mind.

There is precious little new on the market for enthusiasts of well-designed decorative holograms, so I wish Javid all the best for his enterprise and look forward to seeing the results.

Ultimate 3D moves to Taipei

Back in Taiwan last month to assist with the installation of the Ultimate 3D exhibition at a new venue in the capital Taipei. The show attracted 140,000 in Kaohsiung so we are hoping to improve on that figure.

We stayed in the very attractive W Hotel, where I had the chance to rest up and acclimatise before going to the venue.

The Songshan Cultural and Creative Park was a ten minute walk away, and located close to various other attractions. There was an exhibition of Karl Lagerfeld photographs just nearbye.

The building itself was in the Japanese style and at about 60 years old, fairly ancient for Taipei. A cavernous warehouse conversion it provided a perfect blank canvas to work on.

This time the installation crew were relaxed and cheerful, more confident of what needed to be done. You know a transmission hologram is properly lit when it casts a rainbow on the viewer's face.

Shu-Min Lin, Taiwan's best known holographic artist, had seen the exhibition in Kaohsiung and, to my delight had asked for some of his work to be included this time. We last met in 1994 at Lake Forest but I recognised him at once and was really pleased to be showing his holograms.

Mostly pulsed portraits of people, there were also glass vases containing holograms that you could look down into.

I was pleased with the way the show looked in the new venue. The lower ceiling gave a more human scale and the layout flowed more easily.

The Art pieces are displayed in a discreet gallery of their own, but the local design team like to add graphics to jazz up other sections of the show and sometimes I think it works - as with the Richmond Holographic Studios 'Mime' hologram and the Light Fantastic 'Cheshire Cat', in the Kids Section of the show.

I had to fly home before the opening but UEG's man on the spot, Zex Yeh, sent me some of the above photos and I found this one of Shu-Min Lin opening the exhibition on the Ultimate 3D Facebook page.

Fingers crossed it all goes well and I should be back in Taiwan in the Autumn for the next leg of the tour! It would have been nice to see more of the city, which I last visited in 1990, but I did get a chance to visit UEG's other exhibition in town - Salvador Dali, Mind of Genius!

Pearl John at the Royal Society

Pearl John invited me to join her for a soirée at The Royal Society, to view their Summer Science Exhibition, in which she had some work, and to enjoy a slap-up dinner in a marquee outside.

Discovering at the last minute that it was a black tie do, I dug my dinner jacket out of the wardrobe with some trepidation as, the last time I did, I found that moths had eaten half the trousers - requiring an expensive trip to my tailor. To my relief, this time all was well.

Pearl had been commissioned by the South East Physics Network (SEPnet) to create a series of lenticular prints, illustrating research by various scientists at Southampton University, where she is based. The subjects ranged from Supernova to Nanotubes and included one showing data from a particle collision at the ATLAS detector at CERN which, following the announcement of the discovery of the Higgs Boson there, was generating particular interest.

As a non-scientist many of the exhibits went over my head, but it was a splendid occasion with the great and the good of the science world assembled, all in their best bib and tuckers, with medals worn by some. One elderly gentleman looked like an extra in a Ruritanian costume drama. Dinner was pretty good too. I had the roast leg of Sussex pork - slow-cooked for 8 hours the chef told me - followed by the cheese board and a Nutmeg Posset Tart, which was a first. It wasn't much to look at or I would post a picture, but did taste good.

Apple Tart

It is exciting to discover that the holographic gene may be hereditary. My old friend Martin Richardson's daughter Lizzie has begun to incorporate holography into her own art practice, which also includes performance and darkroom activities. Earlier this year I went to see a show at South London's Vibe Gallery which included a small sculptural piece of hers, incorporating a Denisyuk hologram, and today I went to Central Saint Martin's immense new building at King's Cross to see her degree show work.

Lizzie, AKA Apple Tart, her nom de burlesque, has created an installation called 'Holographic Cabaret: The Late Night Shop' with the atmosphere of a small carnival sideshow which you enter through velvet curtains under a sign announcing STAGE DOOR. Inside are four full colour digital holograms facing each other across the confined interior space, her fellow cabaret performers engaging with each other and the spectators from within their virtual domains. I thought it a very effective use of holography in an unusual context and, while Apple Tart is a rare example of someone who had grown up surrounded by holograms for her entire life, her decision to use the medium herself makes perfect sense. A distinct strand of her father Martin's work with pulse lasers always had the feel of performance about it so , whether or not his daughter is consciously following in his footsteps, I can see a kind of theatrical dynasty emerging here.

Apple Tart also appears in a video work by her fellow student, Piotr Krzymowski which, though not usually a fan of video, I found mesmerising. She kindly gave me a guided tour of her fellow students' work, pointing out some of her more interesting contemporaries. As both performer and visual artist I look forward to seeing more of the multi-talented Apple Tart.

Jeffrey Robb - Liminal State

In 1993, while Jeffrey Robb was still a student at the Royal College of Art in London, I put on an exhibition of his holographic work at Smith's Gallery in Covent Garden. Entitled "Landscapes & Metamorphoses" it exposed two strands of his work, the painterly landscape images which took the form of white light transmission holograms, and the 'metamorphoses' which used computer software to transform photographic images into reflection stereograms.
Some of his work from that period is in my collection.

Nearly 20 years later, after a prolonged stint in commercial holography, Jeff has returned to his art career and is exhibiting lenticular works internationally. Check out his website here.

His new show at Hayhill Gallery in London's Cork Street, at the epicentre of the art trade, displays some of the finest lenticular images I have ever seen. Once a medium I somewhat looked down on, lenticular imaging has developed almost beyond recognition from the winky postcards of my youth into something that fits perfectly into contemporary art at the highest level. I am so pleased to see Jeff back where he belongs and at the top of his game.

'Holograms' at the National Portrait Gallery

To the National Portrait Gallery in London for the presentation of 'Equanimity' (described as a holographic image of Her Majesty) to the NPG on behalf of the people of Jersey.

A few years ago, the artist Chris Levine received a commission from Jersey to create a holographic portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The project was conducted as a creative collaboration with the holographer Rob Munday, with help and assistance from Nina Duncan and Jeffrey Robb. The VIP camera system was developed especially for the shoot by Rob Munday. A holographic stereogram was recorded at Buckingham Palace and the resulting large format hologram, made at John Perry's Holographics North in the USA, was subsequently exhibited at the Palace, at the Houses of Parliament and on various other occasions, using blue LED lights to create a monochrome 3-Dimensional image.

Since then, Lenticular versions of the image have been created in various different formats and 'Lightness of Being', another portrait of the Queen (this time with her eyes closed) which derived from the same photoshoot, has been widely reproduced in magazines and has become a best-selling image for Chris Levine. (He generously gave me a digital print of it when it was hot off the press).

To celebrate 60 years of the Queen's reign, the National Portrait Gallery have been touring an exhibition "The Queen: Art & Image", which includes both "Equanimity" and "Lightness of Being" in lenticular form, as the opening and closing images of the exhibition respectively.

Rob Munday kindly invited me to join him at the NPG for the opening ceremony where I managed to snatch a picture of him and Chris in front of "Equanimity".

Also present was Jeff Robb, now a successful lenticular artist in his own right,
who collaborates with Levine on art projects like the Grace Jones portrait series.

Also present were veteran holographers Jeff Blyth and Graham Saxby (pictured above with Jeff Robb) and 3D champion David Burder whose lovely postcard sized version of "Equanimity" came framed in a goody bag at the end of the show.

I remember going to see "Equanimity" when it was at Buckingham Palace and, apart from being thrilled to see the work, the best moment was hearing a uniformed flunky directing the visitors: "This way to see the hologram". After 30 years of working with holograms it felt great to hear the word spoken in such elevated surroundings. I can only imagine how exciting it was for Rob, Jeff and Chris on the original shoot.

And it was exciting yesterday to see the work of several old friends on display at the NPG which, despite the fact that the description of the works promulgates the idea that lenticulars and holograms are the same thing, has at least got 3D imaging into a national museum for the second time in a year (the last being the Boy George hologram at the V&A).

I can't resist mentioning a personal connection with the portrait of the Queen which is that, shortly after the photoshoot with her, Jeff invited me over to Spatial Imaging and recorded a lenticular portrait of me using the same camera system.

Sculpting with Light

In the minds of many, holography is associated, if not with Princess Leia or credit cards, with a means of making a perfect 3-dimensional facsimile of something. For a number of creative artists, however, it has represented an opportunity to make an image of no thing in particular, but to capture light in 3-dimensional space.

Ahishar by Andrew Ryder

Andrew Ryder, a regular exhibitor at 286, recently sent me some images of his recent work which I thought too good not to show as soon as possible. As he works with light, incorporating coloured LEDS into his 3-dimensional constructions, it is the perfect complement to this month's theme of sculpting with light, and a number of his pieces will be showing in the red gallery from May 3 -10. For those of you who would like to attend, the Private View will be on Thursday May 3rd from 6.30 - 8.30pm.

Ultimate 3D in Taiwan

My year began with a trip to Taiwan and the culmination of a project which begun two years ago when I received an email from a Danish exhibition company called UEG, owned by Teit Ritzau. Teit has a major collection of holograms which he made in the 1980s and exhibited for a decade at his museum in the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. It hadn't been on show for a while and he was interested in selling. I went to look out of curiosity, as much as anything, and found that it was particularly rich in Russian holograms, mostly from NIKFI, and in large format transmission works from sources such as AP Holographie, ADD and Holographics North.

I was aware that the collection of the Museum of Holography in Chicago, formed by Loren Billings, was also lying dormant and, having recently been to China, it occurred to me that a combination of the two collections would make a great show to take to the Far East, which had not (apart from Japan and S. Korea) experienced the blockbuster holo-shows of the 1980s and 90s. I went to Chicago and documented the holograms there, which also comprised some great large format work along with major holdings of John Kaufman, Rudie Berkhout, Mary Harman and other significant artists and display holographers.

UEG had recently opened offices in Taipei and Shanghai, and Teit said he liked the idea so would see if he could get some sponsorship. Well, it took two years but he finally managed it and, in December 2011, I got an email saying that Formosa TV were on board and that they wanted the show to open at the National Museum of Science & Technology in Kaohsiung at Chinese New Year - five weeks away! Personally I thought this would prove impossible but Teit insisted that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and that we should go for it. Our working title for the show, which ended up sticking, was ULTIMATE 3D.

I don't think I have ever worked as hard as during those five weeks, selecting the 175 holograms required, writing the captions and texts, photographing everything for the catalogue (which didn't appear in the end) and sourcing merchandise. The latter came from Marvin Uram in Florida, who also supplied a number of holograms for the exhibition, filling in gaps in the other collections with works from Richmond Holographic Studios, Walter Spierings and Larry Lieberman. To bring the content right up to date, I sourced digital images from RabbitHoles in Canada (now closed) and full colour stereograms and Denisyuk holograms from Colour Holographic in London. I also lent my copy of 'Sara' by Liti Holographics, a stereogram which updates Lloyd Cross's famous 'Kiss II', and it proved to be one of the most popular images in the show.

We flew to Taiwan, allowing a week for installation, which we definitely needed as the local team hadn't hung holograms before, and it was a pretty steep learning curve for all concerned. To cut a long story short, I worked until 2 am on the morning of the opening and then had to catch a plane at 6 so never actually saw the finished exhibition! However our sponsors took some great photos and video clips and have posted a number of them on their Facebook page

When not working we were eating, mainly Japanese food which is Teit's favourite, and I must say that the food is one very good reason to visit Taiwan!

We also got to meet up with the Taiwanese holographer, Yaling Huang, and some of her students, who very kindly helped out during the installation.

Our hosts at Formosa TV took us out for a fabulous meal one evening and I entertained them with my favourite iPhone app, Muybridgizer.

This animates a series of photos into a short movie which looks like it might have been made by the 19th century photographer after whom it is named. (You can post these to Facebook but not to this blog unfortunately).

The idea of a laser transmission show is slowly taking shape and I am on the look-out for significant pieces , if anyone would like to make suggestions.

Holograms 2 Goes to Woodstock (UK)

The Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock is the new venue for HOLOGRAMS 2 and, if anything, the work looks even better there.

It is a very attractive English village on the doorstep of Blenheim Palace, so anyone fancying a day out in the countryside could combine a visit to both, rather different, attractions.

Holograms 2: A New Exhibition

Following the success of ‘HOLOGRAMS, the first 60 years’, the exhibition I have been touring in the UK for the past couple of years, the Buckinghamshire County Museum in Aylesbury asked me to create a new show for their visitors this summer. http://www.buckscc.gov.uk/bcc/museum/county_museum.page

Drawing further on my collection, I am presenting 70 holograms distributed over two galleries, and a selection of holographic ‘artefacts’ in display cases.

The exhibition runs until the end of October and is then expected to tour to some of the venues that hosted the previous exhibition.

Colour Holographic Strawberry Jug

Last month I told Mike Medora of Colour Holographic that I had a new exhibition in the pipeline, ("HOLOGRAMS 2", opening at the Buckinghamshire County Museum in Aylesbury, UK, on July 24th), and asked him if he would like to contribute a piece to the show.

He and some colleagues came over to my house and borrowed a few objects to record and yesterday Mike returned with a superb 30x40cm hologram made from a pretty piece of English pottery I have had for a few years.

The team at CH:Mike, Nigel Robiette, Gideon Raeburn, Manuel Ulibarenna and Inaki Beguiristain, have been working on Colour Denisyuk reflection holograms for a while now, but this is the brightest and deepest image I have seen to date. We compared the plate (CH's own emulsion) with examples from other well-known colour hologram specialists and it was considerably brighter. A superb achievement and one that is guaranteed to knock a few people's socks off as the exhibition tours the UK.

I should point out that the whites in the hologram are better than in my photograph of it.

The Death Ray in Your Pocket

To mark the 50th anniversary of the laser, BBC Radio 4 are broadcasting a programme with this (ironic) title.

It will be on BBC Radio 4 at 9pm on Wednesday 2 June. That time is British Summer Time (GMT+1hr)

Never Ending Tour

I seem to be turning into a sort of holographic Bob Dylan, as my touring exhibition moves from venue to venue. This week I installed it in sunny Basingstoke at the Willis Museum.

It's a nice small local museum with a recently refurbished temporary exhibition gallery on the ground floor. The location is the town's Market Place and one of the few areas that hasn't been totally usurped by the motor car and shopping mall culture that predominates the vicinity. If this is like any of the other places I have exhibited, once the word gets round, people will be packing into the gallery to see the holograms.

It is over six months since the last exhibition and unpacking the holograms for display was like meeting up with old friends. In the case of self-portraits by Margaret Benyon, Patrick Boyd and Martin Richardson, that is literally the case and, since Margaret now lives in Australia, I am more likely to see her hologram than I am her self. Hanging the exhibits in a different order makes it a fresh experience too and one sees the work in a new light (no pun intended - though the spotlights in the museum were brand new, as it happens).

Though there were some good sightlines in this space I found it hard to photograph with stills so have posted a video of the show on YouTube. It runs for about five minutes but is still pretty much a run through the gallery. If you have the time , I hope you consider it worth a look:

Colour Holographic

I recently paid a visit to my friends at Colour Holographic at their East London location on the River Thames at Trinity Buoy Wharf. Mike Medora and Nigel Robiette have previously been best known for their full colour stereograms, used predominantly in advertising by clients such as Diageo, Nike and Warner brothers, with whom they have a long-standing contract for 'Moviposters' - holographic trailers that can be seen in cinemas across the UK. Also known for their excellent 'BB' holographic emulsions, CH have begun to produce some impressive full colour Denisyuk style holograms and have authorised me to show the following photos of some recent test pieces.

The concept of using holograms for museum displays and high-end jewellers' windows begins to look feasible at last.

Turrel Exhibit

The idea of using holograms in art seems laughably dated or, at the very least, kitschy. (Dalí probably doomed the medium, in the early 1970s, with his holographic portrait of the rock musician Alice Cooper.) Not even James Turrell, the artist known for making light and space behave in mind- and mood-altering ways, is able to redeem them.

Mr. Turrell’s 15 “transmission light works” are modeled after abstract paintings. They try, not quite successfully, to exorcise the hologram’s hokey, representational associations while retaining a phenomenal quality. Wedges, halos and orbs of light appear to project or recede from mirrored supports. The most interesting examples are physically assertive, even threatening; knife points and lassos emerge with the slightest shift in position.

Other shapes are obliquely referential. One blue-green trapezoidal form recalls Mr. Turrell’s “skyspaces,” open-ceilinged chambers meant to be viewed at dusk. Another, in the form of a long, tilted ellipse, hints at an old painterly illusion: the anamorphic skull in Holbein’s “Ambassadors.”

As a group, however, these works seem like oversize versions of the holograms used to secure credit cards and currencies. One suspects that they are just as functional: something to fill the gallery while Mr. Turrell finishes his site-specific installation, “Roden Crater,” in Arizona. KAREN ROSENBERG
