Email Marketing is one of the "final frontiers" of internet marketing that has largely been kept very hard to learn. Just think about it... There is a PPC Coach., Media Buys Coach, PPV Coach, etc but no Email Coach program.

In fact, in my years of internet marketing, I've met a few mailers and I was unable to learn much from them because they keep it all so secretive. (I thought that all mailers were just mobsters and you had to join their mob to learn or something... )

So all that to say, in dealing with affiliate marketing, email marketing has been the most difficult for me to learn; I would certainly not consider myself an expert on any level in this area.

So when I heard that Joe (who is an emailer who I have heard about before) decided to start an emailing coach program, I was really excited!

I've heard of emailers dropping a single email and making $100,000 in a single day. Not spammers, legit operations.

In fact, I fully discovered the power of having an email list when my dad launched a new product and made mid-5 figures in a weekend... all from people who had purchased from him before. Had he not had the email list, it would have been dramatically different.

What is the Emailing Coach Program?

The emailing coach program is a monthly subscription program similar to PPC Coach.

Essentially it's an exclusive membership forum that includes a set of monthly training guides.

I went ahead and read through the entire first month and to be completely honest, it has answered so many of the questions I have had about things such as:

What software should I use to email my lists?

How should I generate my lists?

How can I email and not get in trouble from can-spam laws?

And a lot more... (Suppression lists, things to look out for, etc)

Just recently Joe finally launched the service and if you're a serious affiliate looking to start emailing, I highly recommend it.

How Much Does it Cost?

Right now Joe is offering a $1 free trial and it is definitely worth checking out!

The Friday Affiliate Interview for this week is with Gary Hamer. Gary Hamer is a Partner at Qwik Media Inc. He manages Qwik Media's internal advertising which includes PPC Search engine marketing, Email marketing & PPV marketing. He has been working in the online marketing industry for 5 years.

Tell us a little background info about yourself. Where are you from? How old are you? How long have you been working in this industry?
I am 26 years old, from Victoria, B.C., Canada, located on Vancouver Island. I have been in the affiliate marketing industry for the last 5 years. I got my first start working for an affiliate network running their internal SEM division.

What accomplishments so far are you the most proud of?
To name a couple I am most proud of starting our affiliate network, Qwik Media, and building it into a successful business. Although I had great success with the company I previously worked with, everyone who works for themselves knows its that much better when you are truly reaping what you sow.

When did you first realize the full potential in affiliate marketing? When did you first “hit the big time?”
I knew the potential of affiliate marketing as soon as I started in the industry. Hitting the big time for the first time was bittersweet because at the time I was working for a company so I was proud to have reached some very high goals but at the same time I wasn't content making someone else rich. Hitting it big on my own was January of 2008, that is the first month we broke 6 figures.

What have been your biggest failures and frustrations?
To be honest I fail more than I would like, rarely huge failures but in this industry if you aren't failing you aren't trying enough new things. I have always learned more from failure than from success. Starting out alone was the most frustrating part because doing everything yourself and assuming all control and accountability is stressful. Although if you don't take risks you will never truly have success without some failures.

What is the single toughest problem you've had to face, and how did you get through it?
The toughest problem would be going from 6 figure months to a lot of your traffic being slapped, big thanks to Google for this, /sarcasm! Really thought it was our fault at the time we had put a lot of eggs in that basket and while it was great for a long time it just wasn't permanent, although not much will be. Since then we have branched out to a lot more traffic sources. It's nice to work with companies who appreciate your business and will actually work with you.

Is there anything that you don’t like to do, that you just hate working on?
Expense reports and month end. I always wait til the last minute to gather all my receipts and file my expense reports, so I am always catching shit from our bookkeeper/accountant. Other than that I really enjoy all aspects of campaign setup and optimization. I have always loved looking through data and tweaking campaigns to get them profitable.

What’s the best advice you could give to someone starting out in Internet marketing? Any pro tips you feel like disclosing?
The best advice I can give is to just take action, come up with a budget that you can afford to spend on testing and be prepared to lose it. Also set aside a certain amount of time you are will to dedicate to it and work hard in that time. Set a goal for yourself and work hard to achieve it. The second most important thing is to ensure you are tracking everything you can, I don't think enough people split test landing pages & offers. I have seen night and day differences in landing page conversion data, it can be the difference between earning $$ and losing it. Dropping bid prices usually results in lower traffic, so don't just take the easy route and drop price, optimize your landing page and you won't sacrifice volume.

What is the future of marketing?
I think we will see a lot more self serve advertising platforms from larger sites like POF at least that is what I hope. There will also be a lot more CPV networks that come around and affiliates will hit it harder than they already have. Google always has and still is hating affiliates and I have read all kinds of ideas about what they plan on doing in the future, having seen the product listings that have popped up alludes to what is the come from them. Performance based marketing will continue to grow as more companies realize the benefit of paying only for results and that will mean more opportunities for affiliates and networks.

If it’s possible for you to share, are there any particular niches that you currently favor? Or that you aren’t necessarily in right now but that you would recommend?
It's about having a system that you can make work. We mostly focus on dating, downloads & we have also started promoting a lot of financial offers through email. All I can recommend is that you test enough before you move on. It all comes down to putting in enough time to find out if something will work for you or not, at the same time some niches are more expensive to test. There are a ton of opportunities on the web and it’s difficult to focus on just one at a time, so staying focused on a handful or niches, verticals and offers is important.

How has your education prepared you for your career?
One of my favorite quotes is “Education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.” Before working in the affiliate industry I worked for my father's construction industry where I learned a lot about business, especially that in that industry it's more important who you know that what you know. Even though the 2 industries are worlds apart there are things I learned that I can draw from into online marketing. When I first started in affiliate marketing I was just thrown into it and had to learn a lot for myself. Luckily I worked hard at it and learned the things that make you successful quickly, and I have never thought it was very complicated. It's all about gathering data and optimizing from there.

What are your greatest strengths?
Being Canadian I am naturally modest, but I like to think of myself as pretty creative when it comes to trying out new ideas and implementing them in our projects. Thinking outside the box will ensure you get a lot of crazy idea's that will most likely fail but if you hit the nail on the head occasionally it can be really worthwhile. I do read a lot, so I’m full of information and I’m pretty good with numbers. Also, I’m a pretty quick learner and I pick up and understand things faster than most.

What are your greatest weaknesses?
I like turtles.

What is the best advice you’ve been given and try to apply to your life?
If you're going to do something you might as well do it as best you can! I don't believe you should half ass anything!

Do you have any role models or people that you look up to?
Definitely my father, working with him taught me a lot about how to run a successful business.

Who has impacted you most in your career, and how?
A previous manager, taught me how to do business and also how NOT to do business/treat people.

Do you try to keep current with the latest Internet marketing news at all? What or who are your main sources?
I check out Affbuzz.com and Wickedfire.com a couple times a week and read a few different blogs out there. I just try to take what I can out of the posts and see if it can spark any new idea's to help what we are working on. Too many people expect everything spoon fed to them and don't want to assume any risks, they should use what they can from info they read and actually apply it somewhere!

What kinds of people do you have difficulties working with? Any good stories?
The only type of person I wouldn't be able to work with is if someone takes themselves too seriously, life is too short to not be able to occasionally stop and laugh at yourself. No stories I want to share!

What are some of your long-term goals? How much is enough? If money was no object, what would you be doing?
Life is about balance, if you work too much then you don't get anytime to enjoy life. I make an effort to stop and smell the roses when I get the chance, and that will always be a goal for me. I think Bill Gates had it right, make as much money as you possibly can right now, then when you have enough for yourself give most of it away and make the biggest possible impact for change for a number of different charities and people in need. That’s would I’d probably do if I didn’t have to work.

What are your typical hours like? When do you just chill back? Do you have a usual day off?
I am at the office at 7 and usually out before 5, there is always time in between checking on campaigns and making sure everything is going smoothly. I usually work a few hours on Saturdays and take Sundays to hangout with the people I care about. Although as any affiliate marketer knows when you are starting something new you are constantly thinking about it in the back of your mind and need to keep your finger to the pulse.

How do you like to spend your free time? What does work-life balance mean to you?
I spend a lot of time with family and friends, and I love reading. What better way can you learn than from other people’s experiences? Work-Life balance is important, as I mentioned before you need to create a balance that works for you. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, but all play and no work can create worse problems than being dull.

If you could go back to being 18, what different career choices would you make?
I do truly enjoy affiliate marketing even with the ups and downs that come with it. I try not to regret things that I do in life so if I had to choose one thing to do differently it would be to have learned about online marketing earlier.

</ol>

Ok, so it's officially tax season and... let's just say tax season is when certain affiliates make MAJOR bank in just a few weeks time. We're talking multi-million dollar type of sales numbers...

I got some info from some inside sources that THIS weekend is going to be one of the largest tax "waves" so to speak. All people looking to get their refund. After this weekend the traffic slowly goes down until the next wave.

So if it were me, I'd make time today to submit those ads and get ready for what could quite possibly be one of the largest days in your affiliate career.

That next wave is people who are usually business owners and put it off until the week or so before April 14th.

So there is some great information for you to use to target your Tax campaigns.

Demographics:
To start off, I'd probably target females. Looking at quantcast, there seems to be a slight favor towards females to the tune of about 58% of total site visitors.

I'd also recommend targeting ages 23+ and going from there. You want working professionals and that's probably the best age to start around. I'd go from there up to around age 35... and if you want to target even more up to age 50.

So, if you're looking for a tax campaign, DirectAgents is putting on an awesome contest for those who decide to participate in the tax season craze.

Enter the 24 Hour Tax and Direct Agents High Tech Takeover contest running now through April 15th! First prize winner wins an Apple iPad!

Here’s how it works:

Sign up for a Direct Agent account if you don’t already have one

Run the 24 Hour campaign on the Direct Agents Performance Network- Short Form Conversion!

The affiliate who generates the most leads by April 15th wins!

Prizes:

1st Prize- Apple iPad, 64 GB/3G- The most anticipated tablet! Minimum of 750 leads

2nd Prize- Flip Mino HD, 120 minutes, 2nd generation- The power of HD video in your pocket! Minimum of 500 leads

<a href="http://www.nickycakes.com" rel=nofollow">Nickycakes (also known as affiliate of the year), just launched a service called LP Lockdown. This service is WAY overdue and needed for this industry.

In a nutshell, this service helps you: Cloak your page from other affiliate, cloak on facebook, cloak via geographical location, get SMS (or email) updates if your page / offer is down, and theft monitoring (and allows you to redirect their page back to yours).

Wow - That's a lot of stuff. Let me explain each one.

LP Lockdown Cloaking

Block Your Page from Being Seen by Other Affiliates
This is my favorite part of the service.

Ever had your landing page scouted out by other affiliates? I hate that and I'm sure you do too. This script uses a database of 150,000+ known affiliate IP addresses and redirects the person if they have that IP address. You can be really sneaky with this and redirect the affiliate directly to an offer, making them think you are direct linking. Or... if you want to be just plain mean, send them to... well you can get creative there. Thus, your landing page is SAFE for the most part.

Block Your Page from Being Seen by Facebook
Beyond just cloaking other affiliates, you have the the option to cloak known facebook IP addresses.

The way this is most commonly used is to get landing pages that normally would not be approved by facebook, into the system by cloaking them to a page that would be allowed.

I don't cloak my facebook accounts because I don't want to risk getting banned, but some people do it and make a ton of money doing it. This script makes it even easier.

Block Your Page by GEO Location
This is another really great part of the LP Lockdown service. You can block entire states or countries based upon IP address!

This is where you can get pretty creative in how you use the script.

Uptime Monitoring LP Lockdown

Uptime monitoring is a much needed service in the affiliate marketing world. LP Lockdown makes it simple enough to get SMS updates as soon as your page goes down. Nothing new here, but a nice feature to have integrated in for sure.

Theft Monitoring / Protection LP Lockdown

Has your landing page ever been ripped off? It sucks. It's happened to me a few times and I know it does not feel good.

This script allows you to monitor if someone has ripped your site and uploaded to their server instantly via SMS Message.

After you get the SMS message, you can actually REDIRECT people back from the stolen page to your landing page effectively taking back the traffic. That is... until the person realizes that all their traffic is being stolen back.

Cost

LP Lockdown costs around $49 bucks per month... and for everything it does, it's well worth the money.

Sign up For LP Lockdown

I've had the privilege of being allowed into LP Lockdown, but unfortunately not everyone will be allowed in. It's an invite only system.

Now, if you're wanting to buy LP Lockdown, contact me, and I will send you an invite. If you don't buy within 24 hours after getting the invite, you've lost your chance forever.

I ONLY have 10 invites, so the first come, first serve...

If you're unsure if you want to buy or not, click here, to be added to the waiting list.

It was about a month or two ago I was watching an episode of Million Dollar Listing. If you have not seen the show, it's about three young real estate agents / brokers that sell multi million dollar homes in and around LA, California.

Anyways, while watching one episode, one of the wealthy guys looking to purchase a few homes said something that is true. "Buy when people fear, sell when people are greedy."

Now, I am not sure but I think he was actually quoting Warren Buffet on this. It makes sense... in the housing markets especially.

This principal I think can also be applied to affiliate marketing. There are certain traffic sources that affiliates are leaving in masses (Google for example) primarily due to fear of banning, learning curves, etc.

At the same time there are certain areas that affiliates are getting greedy (Shady rebills for example). Recently a bunch of these offers went down and rebill offers are getting increasingly harder to make work. Certain affiliate who knew nothing but how to promote a rebill soon had nothing left but to try and figure something else out.

It's in times like this that I like to look at those "feared" places and figure out how to make them work. Right now while people focus on PPV, media buying, and social traffic, I plan to look further into the area that people seem to be leaving.

Anyways... just a thought.

This week's Friday Affiliate Interview is with Jasper from NerdyAffiliate.com. He is a 29 year old full-time affiliate marketer from Los Angeles, CA. He has had many failures and some successes working in this industry.

Tell us a little background info about yourself. Where are you from? How old are you? How long have you been working in this industry?
My name is Jasper Pangilinan, I'm 29 years old, and currently in Los Angeles, CA. I've been working in this marketing industry for about 2.5 years. I'd say I'm a friendly guy that likes challenges. Building a business from scratch and generating my own revenue is one of the hardest challenges I've faced so far.

What accomplishments so far are you the most proud of?
I'm proud of being able to tell my boss to "suck it" and become a full-time marketer. I've started failed businesses in the past and it feels great to actually have something that works. This is my 3rd business venture and I'm glad to be in this industry!

When did you first realize the full potential in affiliate marketing? When did you first “hit the big time?”
I saw the potential when I saw others finding success. I initially joined a forum called WealthyAffiliate and it was inspiring to see others finding success. I thought they might've been fake stories, but it seems too big of a conspiracy for that to happen. I hit it big (at least I thought it was big at the time) at a $1000+/day revenue with a clickbank product about a couple years ago. Only lasted for a few months though.

What have been your biggest failures and frustrations?
My biggest lessons are the fluctuations in campaign performance. I used to think that once you get a campaign profitable that it would be smooth sailing after that. Having to maintain different campaigns and making sure they perform was something that I learned. I remember getting lazy and not tracking and my earnings would eventually dwindle down.

What is the single toughest problem you've had to face, and how did you get through it?
I'd say learning to be more of a "marketer". I come from a computer background and so I used a lot of logic in my copywriting. I never really understood the importance of "features vs benefits". So I'd write more features of the product rather than how it benefitted the person. When I started understanding about the psychology of words and how it makes people react to them, I became more in-tune with how text and other creative elements affect emotional decisions.

Is there anything that you don’t like to do, that you just hate working on?
I hate working on the accounting, finance, taxes, and payroll side of business. All that stuff frustrates me. This an area that I've been working on trying to organize. I have a bookkeeper and accountant that have helped out a lot with sorting everything out.

What’s the best advice you could give to someone starting out in Internet marketing? Any pro tips you feel like disclosing?
First of all, "JUST DO IT!", Secondly, I think the best advice I can give to someone is to find a buddy that is as passionate as you are. Two heads are better than one and when one succeeds, the other wants to as well. I've found that sharing with like-minded individuals helps enormously.

What is the future of marketing?
Hmmm... there's always new types of media and technology coming out every year. Mobile and SMS marketing seems to be the new ones as well as new technology in the display advertising space. I would imagine that the FTC could be intervening a bit more too.

If it’s possible for you to share, are there any particular niches that you currently favor? Or that you aren’t necessarily in right now but that you would recommend?
Health, wealth, and relationships. =)

How has your education prepared you for your career?
I took Computer Science and Business in college, so I'm definitely using the computer science for some of the PHP and HTML code that I work on. I could've probably used more marketing classes though.

What are your greatest strengths?
I'm Nerdy, which means I can logically figure out stuff.

What are your greatest weaknesses?
I can be introverted at times. Although sometimes I can appear to be a bit "crazy".

What is the best advice you’ve been given and try to apply to your life?
"Fail As Fast As You Can." Basically means to get over that learning curve. Whenever you learn something new, there's always going to be some sore of failure or obstacle in the process.

Do you have any role models or people that you look up to?
I look up to Jon Volk. The nice, rich guy next door with the hot wife. lol

Do you try to keep current with the latest Internet marketing news at all? What or who are your main sources?
I pretty much check out my Google Reader from most of the sources at affbuzz.com. Notably, jonvolk.com, bryn.me, cashtactics.net, adhustler.com, ianfernando.com, justindupre.com, nickycakes,com, ppc.bz, richardbonner.net.

What kinds of people do you have difficulties working with? Any good stories?
Aggressive Affiliate Managers. "No" means "No" dammit!

What are some of your long-term goals? How much is enough? If money was no object, what would you be doing?
I'd like to be able to have stable channels of revenue. I'd like to be able to have at least 3 mutually exclusive channels that consistently generate revenue for my business. As a long-term goal, I'd like to be able to do 7-figures a month consistently. If money wasn't an object, I'd be doing one of my many hobbies or maybe try to get on more game shows. haha

What are your typical hours like? When do you just chill back? Do you have a usual day off?
It depends on what I'm working on. If I'm creating a new campaign, I'll probably spend more hours. If I'm optimizing a campaign, then maybe less. Sometimes I'll work 12 hours, sometimes I'll work just 4. I guess on Saturday/Sunday, I've been taking breaks. I don't expect phone calls during the weekends, so they're kind of like day offs.

How do you like to spend your free time? What doe work-life balance mean to you?
Maybe surf the web, workout, play basketball, table tennis, snowboarding, logic games. I just got into RC planes so it's kind of my new hobby. The purpose of my business was to allow me to own my free-time. I wanted to be able to snowboard when I felt like it without asking to take a day off from my boss.

If you could go back to being 18, what different career choices would you make?
Back when I was 14, I was programming simple games and creating web sites on geocities and tripod. I wish I pursued it back then. I might've been a gazillionaire today. haha

If your Kindergarten teacher saw you now, what would surprise him/her about how you turned out?
Hmmm.. I think they would say something about my beard. That seems to be the trend for people who haven't seen me in a long time.

What would you like to change about yourself?
I wish I wasn't so damn "AWESOME". It gets in the way of work. lol

What is your greatest achievement outside of work? What are some of your unfulfilled dreams?
I used to be able to dunk a basketball like 6-7 years ago (I'm only 5'10"). I thought it was really cool. I also really wanted to try to play basketball overseas in Asia or something, but it never happened.

HasOffers has just recently released a couple particularly notable additions within their already impressive affiliate tracking system.

HasOffers Ad Manager

With the Ad Manager, they're providing the ability to handle ads throughout the entire creation and managing process.

The HasOffers Ad Manager enables you to create ads within the site and then optimizes the campaign based upon how the creatives perform. After the ads go live, their performance is tracked so that eventually the top performing ad is displayed, based on whatever factor you choose whether conversion rate, CTR, revenue per impression, revenue per click, or profit.

By testing a wide variety of ads that are then displayed based upon this data there is no guesswork about what combination of images and colors and other factors could make the best possible ad, but actual statistics.

The best creatives are then preferred by the system automatically. This system works not only with banners but with text ads as well. It also features advanced geo-targeting options so that the most effective creative overall isn't used in locations where other ads would have better performance.

The HasOffers Ad Manager comes with every paid edition of HasOffers and you only have to pay per use. It costs just $1-$2 per gigabyte transfer, which is about 100 thousand ads per month, and that's a great deal.

Check it out.

HasOffers Offer Exchange

The other awesome addition to the HasOffers platform is their new Offer Exchange.

With the HasOffers Offer Exchange system, any network utilizing the HasOffers platform can now set offers as available to other networks that also use the HasOffers system.

Whether or not they chose to do so for their own offers, any HasOffers powered network can also access the Offer Exchange offers of other networks powered by HasOffers as well.

The best part is that the only offers allowed on the Offer Exchange will be those that come directly from an advertiser or through an exclusive network relationship and as a result most of the offers are going to have way better than normal payouts. And advertisers can also directly enter unique offers into the Offer Exchange and in turn get connected to a ton of affiliate networks. Everyone wins.

As a HasOffers user, I am very much looking forward to the launch of this offer exchange! Should be great!

The response I got was pretty impressive. In fact, I was pretty excited to hear that this service indeed does exist already!!! Whoop whoop! (Sorry if you started making this type of service - hey there is always room for improvement).

Today I was contacted by Matthew from Observe Point and told me about their service. Better yet, he offered me and all of my readers a special deal! But before I get into that... check out this email he sent me.

We’ve worked in the affiliate industry for many years and are all too familiar with the problems affiliates face every day. Driving traffic to down pages, broken redirects, disappearing tracking pixels. And now traffic caps. They’re not just annoying problems, they are a source of lost income. With no good solutions for the affiliate, we started ObservePoint.

We offer two types of monitoring: standard one-page monitoring and transaction monitoring. One-page monitoring can monitor any aspect of a page: server response, header load, page load, and pixels; tracks the load times for each item and trends them over time. We’ve helped lots of networks get money back in downtime situations because we were able to show the duration of the downtime.

Transaction Monitoring is a beta product that can meet the more advanced needs of affiliates, like cap monitoring. Using our Firefox plugin, you would “record” a two-step process where the first step starts at the landing page, and then continues to the advertiser’s page (the page that has a cap.) On that page, we choose to monitor a few unique objects to “mark” the page. Our back-end servers would then simulate the processes on a continual basis 24x7. When the page changes, an alert would be triggered and sent out via text, sms, or email.

Setting it up sounds simple because it really is – literally start firefox, open the sidebar and click through the process like a normal user. Click save, and ObservePoint does the rest.

We are currently in the process of making some major improvements to our website, plugin and product, and pricing structure, and even then we already have several large clients in the affiliate space using our monitoring to keep track of their offers.

We offer a free 7-day trial, and our pricing model is super-affordable — especially when you consider the potential loss. I’ve included a screen shot that shows a high-level view of the status of offers in a client’s account. This chart would be the main go-to place to find out which offers are operating and which aren’t, for whatever reason according to the offer.

Special Offer

So... They have a 7 day free trial offer but, he said that anyone who enters "VOLK" in the "How You Hear About Us" field get's an extended free trial (14 days). [Thanks Matt!]

So go here and check it out.

It's totally worth having in your affiliate business!

So here is an idea that I don't have time to make but would be epic.

So often I have offers that I run with caps. Capping out on an offer is annoying. Usually, if you don't catch it in time means you're going to lose a chunk or all of your profits.

This can also happen when an offer is suddenly pulled or the host goes down.

So the solution to this would be to make a service where affiliates sign up with their cell number. Then you charge affiliate networks to be able to access this list / integrate it into their system. You ping the landing pages of the major offers to ensure it's up.

Whenever an offer caps out, gets redirected, etc, the affiliates on that offer are sent a text message right before letting them know to take action.

I'm not sure it would be possible, but if networks started integrating this for free into their system, it'd be huge. And then you could offer a unique benefit to affiliates that is not "highest payouts".

It's a really rough idea but a feature I have wanted for ages.

EDIT: Apparently this already exists... and I got them to give my readers a special deal!
