Flowers in the house in Winter makes so much sense for us here in Australia, no 35 degree days to instantly droop the $40 we just spent on blooms. So before you rush through the door and plonk your go-to bunch of white Lillie’s in the same vase as last week, take a gander at our top 5 cheats guide to creating an on trend floral display that will shake up your space and create a fresh feeling without re-organising the whole house.

Floral displays are no longer the complicated affairs of our Mother’s day with specific combinations and lengths, that’s best left to the professionals. These days, flowers in the home are much more casual affairs where vessel choice is the key. We have recently spent months researching the optimum shapes and sizes for the most common bunches and types of flowers so all you have to do is plonk the flowers in and start enjoying them.

1. Look around you, don’t think flowers for the house only come from the florist. I mean, don’t get us wrong, the best ones do but it’s really modern to use foliage only and that can be found anywhere! Ask a friendly neighbour for some off cuts of their wonderful Magnolia leaves, Monsteria, Banksia or Eucalyptus gum when they are trimming it. The added bonus is that foliage lasts for ages in a vase, you will tire of it before it dies trust us. Succulent off cuts are a great idea for small vessels in the bathroom or bedroom too, they will sprout roots this way too and can be planted out in the garden after. Fresh herbs in the kitchen can do double duty as display too, we love big bunches of kale in a jug or vessel which is at hand for smoothies too!

2. Make sure everything under the waterline is stem only. Leaves, small buds and other bits from the flowers in the water will just pollute the water and shorten the life span of your bunch. So boring as it is take the extra 5 minutes to strip the stem. Best way to do this is with the vase you intend to use, measure by eye where the water line will finish and go from there. Re-cut the stems of the flowers too, all this prep will help lengthen the life of your flowers.

3. Vase choice is key, clearly we are biased towards ceramic and pottery vessels! But instead of one vase stuck floating in the middle of the dining table, try a few different shapes and spread the one variety of flowers across the three for added modern impact. Or use tonal coloured flowers for the same effect, all whites or all pinks for example. Have a look at our essential range below, we have used different shapes to complement each other in neutral shades that all work together flawlessly.

4. Placement. Where do you spend time in the house? Don’t conform to old ways and habits of placing flowers in the same location. Consider strongly fragranced flowers on the hall table when you enter the house you are greeted with a beautiful scent that will follow you into the space. We love flowers next to the bed which fills the room with a great scent to drift off to sleep, lavender is wonderful here. It also makes your room, no matter the condition, feel like a luxe hotel suite and its an intimate treat just for you. Try something on your desk too, especially if you work from home, just don’t place flowers near a heating source during Winter.

Image via Inside Out Magazine

5. Water. Don’t set and forget. make flowers easy to change the water (every two days if you can) which will keep them fresh for longer. It might sound boring but it really does work. Jump over to the website to shop our Essential vase range and get busy at your place.

Our new Winter collection we were inspired by one of our all time favourite colours, blue. We always wanted to do a whole collection based in just one hue. The love of super-on-trend shibori and a shared history in a previous life of working with denim brands, always made the use of indigo an intriguing and multi faceted form. We know the depth and variation you can achieve with blue, like no other colour it has infinate possibilities. Amassing a huge inspirational catalogue of blue fabric in every shade and images in every texture really doesn’t amount to a hill of beans when you work in ceramics though! That is unless you work with our makers, who can make ceramics look like ANYTHING!

So on we went, looking at everything from blue hands which are the hall mark of an indigo dyer through to the use of blue through the ages in ceramics like willow patterns and delft designs. We wanted to explore more serving ware and table top pieces and thought blue would make a great partner for this concept as most people have and use blue table ware already and we loved the idea of these pieces being instant “vintage”. That gorgeous colour that is probably one of the only ones on the planet that gets better with use like blue jeans or faded paintwork on a well loved chair. This book is a great source of inspiration, Indigo – The colour that changed the World

The next step was working with our makers on our kitchen collection, to create vivid translations of the fabric and patterns achieved through various dying techniques. Like tie-dye, shibori arashi and pinching, watercolor and the like. Our makers used hand painted effects and decals to create string marks and realistic effects of worn and dyed fabric. Here is our Indigo Vintage kitchen collection.

The we wanted to harness the skill of our hand painters with some traditional terracotta pottery, again using Shibori as the inspiration and also looking to mud cloth for some graphic accents. Here the pieces are wheel thrown or made from a slab construction and then fired, decorated and fired again.

Looks evolve over time, the best ones take pieces of your existing collection and like your wardrobe update the existing ones to give a new lease of life without constantly re-inventing. Great rooms should be built over time, not in one shopping expedition or at one store. It’s a great thing to love one particular aesthetic but who want’s their place to look like someone else’s or subscribe to a tick and flick list of a particular style? Replica chair, tick. Certain table, tick. This style rug, tick. Boring. You’ll find pastels linked with lots of decorating trends, but all pastels, all the time can feel like living in a kids room or inside a cupcake store.

Instead we love the idea of re-adjusting our vision so by adding a new handmade piece on top of a crumbling patina or vintage surface we create something that exists no where else. Isn’t that awesome? Only you are the director of what your space needs and should be, sure we all need some help in fine tuning the details but sometimes we need to look a little harder at what we have before we rip it out and replace it. Could that pastel bathroom sink be super cool with a sharp new mirror? Could you soften the edges of your slick new sofa with some handmade cushions full of texture and imperfections?

Pastels are super on-trend as we know, increasingly as we design we are looking to classics for inspiration. Always with an eye on the horizon but we love to create things that you want to keep. So when designing this range we looked to team pastels with aged surfaces and warm colours to create a juxtaposition that was fresh and attainable instead of pure millenial. Our pieces are un-mistakably handmade, imperfect and created by man and not machine using materials from the earth, what better way to celebrate this than to combine the raw material with a new face. For us, the pastel trend works best when teamed with a rougher, imperfect partner that way the softness of the colour is highlighted and not lost. Here’s a peek at our take on pastels. You can shop the new collection here.

We all love an “it” indoor house plant, and this winter it looks like the Pothos is shaping up to be the hottest, capture worthy green friend. Put it high on a shelf and let its curly tendrils dangle and trail down to create a ethereal and modern vibe. We love placing one high on top of the kitchen cupboards or bathroom shelf to liven up what can be a drab space. you can find all these images and more on our Pinterest page devoted to plants too!

The great thing about this plant is that it is much more affordable than the fiddle fig. While the fiddle fig can also be a little precious in terms of actually keeping them alive! The pothos is hardy and easy to care for, ranked up there as one of the best indoor plants. Be inspired by these beautiful vignettes below from photographer Luisa Brimble. .You can see how just one on-trend plant can give a space that great relaxed bohemian vibe and transform any room whether its a brand new build or a rustic rental.

Have you noticed a resurgence in raw terracotta? In all the above styled shots its a key player to the pared back look. We are right there with this trend with our brand new terracotta ridge planters. You can split the planter top from the base and use both or protect your surfaces and create a cool shape with the planter and saucer. This guy is great for a small trailing plant or group them with aged terracotta in different shapes and sizes to create an awesome display with a modern twist.

According to Google, green, the colour of life, renewal, nature, and energy, is associated with meanings of growth, harmony, freshness, safety, fertility, and environment. As we have been finding ourselves flooding our homes lately with plants, and as the wonderful Beth Ditto says “A beautiful plant is like having a friend around the house”. But because of the added green in our spaces, we have been really luxuriating in just how alive everything feels when you add green. Wood becomes vibrant, white becomes welcoming, even dated finishes look fresh with some emerald accents (see below).

Like with any colour the specific shade is the sticking point, the particular hue we are crushing on this winter is the darker of the spectrum. So from cactus, through to kelly and the richest of emerald. We spent a lot of time developing the perfect green for our new hive pot which would accent the foliage within.

Universal colour trend oracle Pantone says of it’s Spring 2016 shade of green – “Green Flash” calls on its user to explore, push the envelope and escape the mundane, radiating an openness. The popularity of this brilliant hue is representative of nature’s persistent influence even in urban environments, a trend continuing to inspire designers.”

Pop of green through plants and the stools brings the space to llife

We love our stockist, Aaron who owns Harold’s Finishing Touches (who is a bonafide monochrome lover) uses green as a seasonal highlight for his store and at home, as seen below. Follow his Instagram feed to see more uses of this on-trend shade. This particular shade of green looks so right and inviting for the cooler months when teamed with sharp black and white.

We are lucky enough to travel to our meet with our makers often and go through our new designs they are making with us. Surprisingly or not, we still after many trips to the same factory learn more about the process and the incredible skill possessed by the workers. One such factory is where our Gallery Pottery is produced. We call it Gallery Pottery as its not a simple clay vase that anyone could make any where in the world, the skill used to produce our pieces is such that we think its gallery quality. Let us walk you through some of the different processes to give you an insight into how many steps go into creating a HYMMJ clay piece.

First of all, this is a great factory, set in amongst the leafy surrounds of a small Filipino village. Wafts of smoke fill the air from the kiln, there is always a chicken squawking or a cat roaming around the perimeter of most factories. Open on many sides and spacious with separate designated areas for each specific task. Be it the sampling area, to throwing, hand finishing or boxing and packaging. The workers here take pride in what they produce, each piece given the attention required and each person having a specific skill that is respected and appreciated. Filipino’s are by nature a happy people so there is always a joke or a wide grin when you approach someone to see what they are up to.

It amazes us that such sophisticated beauty can arrive from such humble materials. First you start with, no surprises here the clay. After its dug up out the earth and transported many hours to the factory location it is then mixed with water in a special machine several times over to achieve the correct consistency.

The raw clay

Mixing the water with the clay

After the clay is mixed, it is worked into shapes then placed in plastic on pallets for storage until it is ready to use, this process must be repeated if the clay is not used inside a 48 hour period. Then the clay is thrown on the wheel to the desired shape. The potter uses different systems and their experience and skill to dictate the size, we love the guide the potter uses below best.

Throwing the shape on the wheel

After the pot is thrown, this is then the greenware stage which is left to dry out before firing. Sometimes, depending on the design, etching or embossing happens at this stage before the first firing. So a pattern may be scribed into the clay. The first firing is done in the wood kiln, seen below. The pots are stacked by hand into this kiln from the side and risers are placed between each level of pots to maximise the space in the kiln. The size and shape of the vase or pot can increase the amount of space it requires in the kiln, thus increasing the price of the piece as only a few can be fired at a time. The pieces are fired for several hours, sometimes staff stay overnight to stoke the wood and keep the kiln at temperature.

Wood Waiting to stoke the kiln

Then more designs and glazing, hand painting and stencils can be added before the next firing in the gas kiln. Here you can see some of the artisans hand painting, applying stencils and generally getting busy on what will be revealed after firing. Of course, kiln position and temperature, the thickness of the glaze and gravity can all effect the colour and finish of each piece. Some are acceptable variations (we love variations) and some are considered rejects if the flaws are too great.

Below you can see our new Mud cloth bag vases before and after firing, note the red sections are where the glaze is not applied and will “resist”. You can see in the finished product the wonderful contrast it achieves with the lush navy glaze. When pieces are placed in the gas kiln they are stacked on pallets on tracks and can be moved in and out of the kiln with more ease than the wood kiln. You can see the bottom of the pallets sticking out of the below photo.

In an attempt to turn over a new leaf and with a few of our team members hitting a new kind of age milestone this year…and we aren’t talking our twenties… We’ve collectively decided to embrace the healthier side of middle age, and make some positive changes in our diet to be in our best shape (before we break that hip). There is such an exciting and sexy looking foodie space out there for people embracing this lifestyle. We’re not talking drooling over bodies on Instagram, we mean lovingly prepared and shot delicious food presented in stunningly styled images with equally beautiful home-wares. If you are reading this blog, chances are you like sexy home-wares too.

Top of our list for go-to feeling good and not guilt is My New Roots. Started by trained Holistic Nutritionist Sarah B in 2007, My New Roots is a vegetarian food blog, that is so much more. When applying her nutritional training when unable to practise in a new country (moving from Toronto to Copenhagen) and becoming a self taught chef and successful food blogger in the process. We love Sarah’s ethos that she isn’t a fan of labels, vegan, vegetarian, raw, fruitarian etc. We figure too, a balanced diet with some of her delicious recipes in the mix can’t hurt on our new journey to well being. With great recipe titles like “Big Comfy Sweet Potato” and “Beet, Rasberry and Vanilla smoothie bowl” each one is creative, nutritious and delicious. We knocked out these muffins and were so impressed with the results we wanted to share them with you.

Chia Rhubarb Apricot Muffins
Ingredients:
• 1 ½ cups spelt flour
• ½ cup rolled oats
• 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
• 1/2 tsp. baking soda
• 1/2 tsp. salt
• 3 Tbsp. chia seeds + ¼ cup water
• ¼ cup maple syrup
• 2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
• 1/2 cup orange juice
• 1 tsp. vanilla extract
• 1 1/4 cup finely chopped rhubarb
• 1/3 cup chopped dried apricots (dates, cranberries, cherries, etc.)
• optional nuts, seeds, oats for topping (your choice – walnuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds etc.)

Directions:
1. Combine chia seeds and water in a glass and set aside for at least 15 minutes.
2. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line a muffin pan with liners (we used cut up baking paper).
3. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the flours, baking powder, baking soda and salt until combined.
4. In another bowl, add the chia seed gel, olive oil, maple syrup, orange juice and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth by hand. Add to the flour mixture and blend just until moistened but lumpy. Stir in the rhubarb and apricots.
5. Spoon the batter into 12 muffin cups, filling each cup about 2/3 full. Sprinkle the topping of your choice onto each muffin and bake until springy to the touch, about 25 to 30 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes, then transfer the muffins to a wire rack to cool completely.

Our finished muffins ready to devour

We happily ate ours in the office for a good few days, we warmed them through for extra yumminess. Who knew soaked chia is an egg substitute? We do now! My New Roots has a gorgeous cookbook and a beautifully produced app with cool functions where you can create a favourites menu and pop it straight in a shopping list. Once you have read and cooked through some of the recipes you realise too that you can stock your pantry and reuse a lot of the same ingredients again and again so no waste. Enjoy!

We have been so lucky to share so many of our lamps with people over the years. So many customers have enjoyed living with our lamps in their homes and stores. We try and share as much information as we can through our website and chatting to customers about what makes our bone china pieces so special (and often copied). So we thought we’d give a little sneak behind the scenes as to how many special hands it takes to create a Have You Met Miss Jones lamp and how unique they are.

First of all we get busy being inspired by what would make an awesome lamp, be it an animal, an inanimate object or a cool shape perhaps. Then we consider the size of the piece, and the features that might bring it to life in its best way possible, whether that means tiny punched out holes to create a moonscape, barnacles on a whale body or tiny detailed feathers on a kookaburra. These details although visible when the lamp is off in pure white, really come to life once the lamp is lit and the glow highlights each hand crafted detail.

When our bone china factory receive the designs, their design department then sets the work. The design is carved into plaster, exactly like a 3-D sculpture – and the designers have all the talent of a sculptor. Added to which they have the functional aspects to overcome, what will be stable once fired, what parts of the design will be opaque as they are too far from the lamp, where the lamp fitting will be placed etc.

Designers working on the plaster

The design is altered and measured, detail added and refined at this stage. Often we are shown our designs at this step, greenware, where we can give comments and feedback as to changes that need to be made to the interpretation. Sometimes due to the incredible skill of the design team, our designs come out better than we could have hoped for with the skill added by them.

From the green ware stage, a mold is made of the design which then is filled with the liquid clay (which is a mixture of English clay and animal bone that is a byproduct of the food industry). The ground bone is what gives bone china its strength, superior white matte finish and incredible luminosity when illuminated. Porcelain, Earthenware or Stoneware, although strong don’t have the luminescent properties of bone china – that what makes it so special!

After drying, from the mold the piece is then transferred to the kiln, any excess clay is removed at this stage as it is much more difficult after firing. The simplicity or complexity of the design of course means less or more time is spent on the piece, also the size of the design influences how much room it takes up in the kiln or how it can be easily stacked and fired. All these factors influence the price of the completed piece, something consumers don’t ever really know with ceramics. In decorator and table top pieces, another glaze or colour might be added also which would involve a second firing, but as our lamps need to be transparent and white, only one firing is needed.

Once the lamp is fired, it is then finished by hand and tested for translucency. What looks like a dentist drill is used for larger pieces of excess clay and sandpaper is used for a smooth and beautiful finish. The piece is put on a globe on a light box to test there are no thicker parts of clay or imperfections that will be revealed when the lamp is on.

Our moon lamp being sanded smooth and tested for imperfection

One of our specially designed LED lamp kits is fitted to each lamp and then after this step, the lamps are checked for quality control and then await many layers of paper and are boxed up individually to await transport to us.

Lamps ready to be fitted with a LED globe

The term “hand made” gets used a lot in design, but when you take a look at how a true hand made design is created you see the value in not only the hands that have touched it but the heart, spirit and commitment that makes the pieces special. Now you are up to speed on how incredible the process is to create our designs, explore our lamp selection here and appreciate all the detail and many hours of work that went into creating them.

So we all have about 1000 indoor plants in our houses about now right? We know its a huge trend sweeping every living room Australia wide and just because the weather is getting colder doesn’t mean our plants just throw on a scarf and spend it outdoors. Cause we love the look of plants inside there are a our 3 top tips that you can do to keep them thriving all winter long.

Water

The key thing to remember here is that you need to cut back on watering in winter. Basically let the soil tell you what to do, wait for dry soil in winter before you pour. The roots of your plants are basically dormant in winter and growing virtually stops. If you continue with the amount of water you use in summer you will start producing mould on the roots as the water has nowhere to go.

Our super cute watering cans are arriving in May

Windows

We know plants need light to survive and thrive so in the warmer months lining up your favourite herbs and plants along the kitchen window sill makes sense. In Winter though the glass conducts and holds all the cold air from outside which can wreak havoc on delicate leaved beauties like ferns. To be safe push the plants away from contact with glass so they can still enjoy that gorgeous winter sun but don’t have contact with the window pane itself. Make sure each plant has space to try and absorb as much light as possible in Winter too.

Move plants away from glass in Winter

Raise it up

Our floors can also play havoc with our indoor plants in Winter, cold floors and draughts can damage plants and kill roots. Place your pots in plant stands, put risers beneath your plants if they are on the ground (like our Acacia slices below) or re-position them in cool hangers from the ceiling. Warm air rises and all that!

I think regardless of whatever nutritional trend is sweeping the nation (paleo we are talking to you) or particular ingredient (matcha we’re lookin’ at cha)! No one can deny the appeal of an awesome tasty burger. In recent years we have seen very successful chefs from the fine dining world throw their hat into the ring with their take on the burger and many a (we won’t say hipster, but there it is) new venture focus solely on creating the pinnacle of this classic.

We love to eat out here and have sampled burgers far and wide, in Sydney our hands down fav is Mary’s and in Melbourne, Huxtaburger. Both establishments offer a refined and curated menu that lets the burger shine. Soft buns are key, try and find a brioche bun from your local bakery (Brasserie bread and Breadtop make great ones) or store (Woolworths and Coles now carry them too but move fast, Friday night seems to be burger night in Sydney). We’ve heard stories of people heading to McDonalds to order buns only (yep!) to go home and make their own special filling! A soft and slightly sweet bun does offset the fattiness of the cheese and meat, it also allows you to focus on the filling and not trying to navigate your face around a huge piece of bread. You can add or delete your favourite accompaniments as you wish, we aren’t going to go into the pineapple/beetroot/egg debate. Here is our take on the tasty burger that you can knock out at home any day of the week.

Ingredients

French brioche burger buns
Good quality mince (wagu/ brisket mix is best but any good mince is still nice)
Pickled cucumber
Red Leicester cheese or similar
Streaky bacon
Tomato
Lettuce
Tomato ketchup
American mustard
Special sauce (Mayo, Worcestershire sauce & Tabasco to taste & add finely chopped lettuce core ie: crunchy white part)

Method

1. Mould the mince into pattie sizes & do not add anything to the mince.
2. Cook streaky bacon & set aside.
3. Season patties & cook on one side. Turn, brush with the mustard, top with bacon & then layer on the cheese. Cook until pink or to your liking.
4. Briefly toast/ char on bbq the inside of the buns.
5. To assemble: Spread the special sauce on base of bun, top with pattie, ketchup, slice of tomato, pickle, lettuce & top of bun.
6. Serve with favourite accompaniments- fries or wedges are good! PS: Don’t forget to roll up your sleeves when you dig in…

We are back at work and of course full steam ahead into the new year! In preparation for our bi-annual trade fair and new season launch we always spend a lot of time pulling together our ideas for our new season photo shoot. We start usually by looking at our new designs and what mood we are trying to convey. Usually we do a lot of in studio work but this season we decided we needed a clean and modern feel but we wanted the eminent warmth of a domestic space to convey what a studio can’t.

We had the added pleasure of working with an old Miss Jones alumni, Chris Chen. Truly a pleasure to have the amazing Chris back on board and working at breakneck speed as the Miss Jones team tend to! We have four brands to shoot now and Chris showed no signs of fatigue over two days. There were BLT’s, coffee, Miss Chu paper rolls and various props being eaten to under the Bondi sun to keep us on task.

First thing to do is pack up a selection of all the brand new samples of our new designs (that we just unpacked with all our other pieces for this season!) and get them taken to the location. Next up, a visit to our favourite prop shop, Major and Tom, close to our office. Georgie has been running this place for years and it shows in her incredible organisation. It’s an OCD delight, everything arranged by material and colour. Vintage glassware, crockery of every description, napery, chopping boards, if its food related, you name it, the girls have it. But Georgie also has incredible table tops and a few select chairs and bits and pieces needed to give texture and life to take an image from average to extra fab. *Just a note that all the photos in this blog were snapped during the two days – the finished images will be revealed in the months to come looking way more professional than these ones!*

Major and Tom have perfectly aged table tops for hire like this one.

Next stop is the flower market, we usually make an early pilgrimage to the flower market but we were pushed for time and also shooting the day after Australia Day so we chose an excellent florist near our shoot location. Pearson’s at Bondi Junction had a wonderful selection, a few very special blooms too for that extra wow factor. So many we had a hard time choosing!

Pearson’s Florist had a great range of blooms for us to choose

Then we gathered up some all important exotic fruits, vegetables, pastries, and general yumi-ness to keep us going then on to the shoot! All the flowers were quickly stowed in a large tub and all props spread out for easy access. We had a rather detailed shoot list of each design and what background and props we thought would work for each. We started outside with the Mr Green Grass items as storms were tipped the following day (and did they deliver)! See our official stylist Bodie Jones doing what he does best and inspecting the work!

With so many shots planned, it wasn’t long before the planning becomes mess – usually one end of the table we are shooting on becomes the dumping ground just out of shot. I quite like the chaotic little vignettes it creates. Sometimes you find cool colour combinations or juxtapositions that you wouldn’t have thought of so it’s wise to look for the beauty in every accident on a photoshoot. As you can see from the images below, some crazy things happen at the end of the shoot table just out of view!

Stay tuned to see the fruits of our labour in the coming months, we can’t wait to show more! Many thanks to Chris for her unwavering support and talent over the two days, we sure made some pretty pictures together.

Our location (Director Jennifer Jones’ abode) back to normal after 2 days of chaos!

Its sometimes tricky to accessorize a tomboy look without over doing it, or it simply just defeats the whole idea of the look. Essentially we are tomboys here at Jones & Co, this is why we always find and design jewellery thats bold yet restrained. Some essentials to build on your feminine/tom boy look are – a classic pair of black skinny jeans or ripped boyfriend jeans, a pair of your favourite causal trainers, a checked shirt perhaps, a simple knit, and a classic tee. These looks are complete with a simple necklace, stacked rings or even a bracelet. Some of our favourite tom-boy looks are:

Image via Pinterest

Ripped jeans always seem to remain on the fashion radar, the carefree look they create is what keeps them trending each season. Ripped jeans are worn in the most causal or sophisticated of ways, creating two very different but stylish looks. Boyfriend jeans are of course menswear inspired so can garner a more sophisticated look. Your ripped jeans can be worn with a pair of your fav sneakers or an easy pair of nude heels for a more dressy approach and a over sized white tee.

Boyfriend jeans are a complete necessity all year around, but mainly in the colder seasons. Its all about dressing them up and down, with the accessories you choose to complete the look. Some of our favourite necklaces that we think work well with our comfy boyfriend jeans are:

Succulents are the no maintenance plant we all adore. We love all varieties big and small, with Christmas fast approaching, why not create a unique gift for a special person who is super tricky to buy for? Everyone loves plants! Follow our easy how to, you only need a few basic skills and you can even use snippets or cuttings of pieces found in your neighbourhood. Start now and they will have time to take before the man in the red suit appears. Here is some inspiration to get you going, there is more succulent goodness on our Mr Green Grass Pinterest board!

First you need a container, one with a drainage hole will work, or you can add a layer of gravel or stones at the bottom to help with drainage too. Low flat ones work well, but a mini version in one of our paper bag planters is a great go to for a look that will work with any ones interior scheme. Here are a few options below. Click to buy them here.

So fill your container with small stones or gravel, then top it up with a potting mix that is designed for cacti and succulents. You can source this from your local garden centre. This will ensure your cactus garden thrives. Don’t fill it right to the top of course, leave some space for your cuttings. These little guys are pretty hardy, most established neighbourhoods have many varieties of succulents that are easy to snip or break a piece off. Ask neighbours, family and friends for cuttings from their plants. You might need to invest in a few special ones from the garden centre while you are there to give your planter a little wow and variety. Look for species that already have a few plants in the container so you can split them up once home.

Now you want to pack your pot well with plants from the start. Cactus is slow growing and you want your container to look good straight away. Try and create height with the largest piece first and move the plants around until you have created some nice distinction between the varieties, in colour and texture. The beauty of these little guys is that they look good in mostly any combination, grey foiliage works with dark green, spikes with smooth and so on. If you are at a loss, don’t fear, one variety en masse can look really strong and impactfull too. You’ll want to wear some gloves if you are opting for the cactus route. Here’s our effort in our Saturday planter below.

You can finish off with more pebbles if you have any little gaps in your planting. Make sure your recipient allows the container to dry out between watering as succulents and cactus don’t like wet feet and place in the house or outdoors where the garden will receive at least 4-6 hours of sunlight a day.
