(Article) - Quick Beauty Routines

I went from fashion model to frump in record time.

Once, image meant everything to me. As a former model and television reporter, I took care of myself and invested in my wardrobe. Now, I take care of kids and the only thing I've invested lately is time.

After my daughter was born, I wore the same thing day and night: leggings and my husband's baggy flannels. My pre-pregnancy clothes didn't fit right. My hair hung in my face.

A strange thing began to happen...before long, I ceased to mind wearing the same clothes every day. What's the point of wearing nice outfits? What's the point of makeup and mousse? I'm not going to leave the house, I told myself. Who is going to see?

The truth is, the most important person in your household sees you each day. You.

Maintaining the beauty routine you enjoyed pre-children can help you remember your distinct identity. I am a professional mom, and I am always more productive when I dress like a professional. I wear makeup not to impress anyone, but to please myself.

Taking care of yourself in the simplest ways can help put the focus back on you. When you take care of yourself, you're a better mom. And since you're the nurturer, it's up to you to nurture yourself.

A Mother's Glow

Clean, healthy skin is the first step in any beauty routine. A system of cleansing, toning, and moisturizing twice each day works well for most everyone, just don't forget that indulgent and soothing mask twice each week. No time to mask? Try a masking cleanser in the shower.

My showers are limited to five to seven minutes, since that is how long my daughter takes to finish a sipper-cup of apple juice (currently, the most effective diversion). Shave a few minutes from your shower with a shampoo-and-conditioner-in-one. I used to balk at the concept-until I stuffed a sample of Pert Plus in my gym bag. That product has come a long way.

Making Up

Next, my daughter gets to play with an empty, capped tube of concealer while I play with my cosmetics. Still, I'm sure you know first-hand about a 10 month-old's attention span. No time to waste.

Spend the most time on your best feature. Start with a cream-to-powder foundation, which covers well without a made-up look. Swipe the sponge across your face once, then go over any spots that need a double coat. Determine your need for an under-eye concealer, which often has a lot to do with the amount of sleep your children afforded you the night before.

A quick dash of the blush brush is next. A good set of makeup brushes make application easier, faster, and more precise.

For eyes, remember that neutral colors require less blending. Take the guesswork out of your routine, too, by using a compact with coordinated cheeks and eye colors. Brush eyeshadow from lashline to crease. Apply a coat of mascara, and you're ready for lips.

Smooth on lip gloss or a neutral shade. Try a shade two or three shades darker than your natural lip color.

(Spend the most time on your best feature. Play it up.) If you like to accentuate your lips, grab a neutral pencil. Always start with a sharp tip for better precision. Trace the "v" in the center of the upper lip. Line to the corners. Now pencil in the bottom lip, blend, and apply lip color.

Nail it

We moms do so much with our hands each day. Well-manicured nails are a great reminder that you take care of yourself. But who has the time for a manicure?

You do. Keep a nail file in your diaper bag or pocketbook and shape your nails during down-time...when you're at a dead stop in traffic or waiting at the doctor's office.

Brush on a coat of fast-drying clear polish before bed. Or, if you like color, indulge in a weekly nail ritual. I use a long-lasting nail enamel in a neutral tone followed by a fast-dry top coat.

A special pampering tip, find the reddest red, and apply it to your toenails. Then go without socks all day.

(Article) - Soothing Bath Salts Recipe For Dry Itchy Skin

For me winter time is when my skin seems to get extremely dry. Even when I remember to lotion every day it doesn't seem to help as much as it should. I often mix this bath salt recipe up to help out the situation. You can use it in any season but I find myself making it the most often during the winter.

How To Make:

Ingredients:

1/2 cup of baking soda

2/3 cup of dried milk

1 cup of

Epsom salts

1 cup of sea salts

Directions:

I just mix them all together then add about a 1/2 cup or so to my bath water. If I don't have any sea salt then I use all Epsom salts, just so you use a 2 cup combination between the two.

I don't add any fragrance to this recipe since sometimes it can irritate dry skin, or even dry it out further depending on what you add to it.

One thing that adds to itchy dry skin in the winter is we tend to take hotter showers and baths than we do in the summer, you may consider lowering the temperature a bit to help your skin out as well.

To really help out your skin continue to use lotion as normal, I often use a more moisturizing type of lotion when my skin is dry then the ones that include my favorite fragrances.

(Article) - The Myths of Acne - Let the Truth Be Told

Does chocolate cause acne?

No way! Eating chocolate does NOT cause acne. The only way chocolate could cause acne would be if you rubbed it all over your skin until it literally clogged your pores! Yuk. There are no documented or scientific studies linking breakouts to chocolate.

Do fried foods cause acne?

Fried foods have NOT shown to be related to the causes of acne. In fact, there aren't any specific foods that cause acne. Of course, skin health is directly related to a well balanced diet, adequate rest and general personal cleanliness.

Does stress cause acne?

Stress is not technically one of the causes of acne. But, stress does stimulate our body enzyme and immune systems to cause a stimulation of the oil glands. It has been proven that lowering stress levels certainly can help to decrease oil production, and thus decrease the symptoms of acne.

Will sun exposure help get rid of my acne?

There has always been the old myth that "sunning" your skin will clear up your breakouts but actually the opposite is true. Dr. James Beckman, the creator of Reversion, says " sunlight itself can cause an increased production of skin oils which may actually make acne worse". And don't forget the sunscreen!

Is acne contagious?

Acne is a skin condition and certainly is not contagious to your friends or family or any other person. However, if you pick or squeeze an acne lesion with your fingernails and then scratch another area, you can contaminate a non-infected "pore" with bacteria-infected material and cause a new lesion to arise. Using the general principles of washing both hands and face on a regular basis and not picking at acne lesions will help you prevent breakouts.

(Article) - Fifty Useful Tips For Better Sleep

You can sleep without pills and still beat insomnia. The fifty following tips will help you to have a better night's sleep.

Try to relax before bedtime; take a walk or read a newspaper; just do something which is not stressful.

Do your paperwork or other work-related activities early in the evening.

Make sure your bedroom is not noisy.

If your bedroom is noisy and you can't correct it, wear earplugs.

Think of places you fell asleep easily and try to copy those places; set your room up the same way.

Check the medicines you are taking to see that they aren't nervous system stimulants.

Make sure your bedroom is well-ventilated but not too cold.

Don't use too many or too few blankets.

Don't tuck your sheets in too tight at the bottom of the bed; your feet should feel free and unrestricted.

Your mattress should not sag.

Have a big enough bed for yourself; if you're 6'8", don't try sleeping in a single bed.

Your pyjamas or nightgown should be comfortable, not too tight.

Use a pillow that suits you, soft or firm, whichever you prefer; or not at all, if that's what you prefer.

If you like a soft light on while you sleep, have one on.

If you prefer to sleep in darkness make sure your blinds are thick.

Rise at the same time seven days a week, no matter what.

Do not linger in bed when you wake up; instead, get up right away and start moving on with your morning routine.

Avoid napping in the afternoon.

Do some sort of physical exercise each day which will tire you out.

Cut down on smoking and drinking alcohol at least two hours before bedtime.

Don't drink coffee or soft drinks containing caffeine after dinner.

If you like to watch TV before going to bed, keep it light; watch a comedy instead of a drama.

If you like to read before going to bed, keep it light. Read to a logical stopping point, so you won't lie awake wondering what's going to happen.

Don't socialize with friends with whom you are likely to argue in the evening. Nighttime arguments are like poison to an insomniac.

Establish a regular bed-time.

Avoid eating too much salt with your dinner and in any after-dinner snacks.

Try eating snacks high in calcium and protein before retiring; small amounts of cheese and nuts contain Tryptophan, an amino acid which promotes sleep.

Take bone meal tablets or some other form of calcium regularly after dinner.

Herbal teas such as camomile and valerian induce sleep.

Try a teaspoon of brewer's yeast and a tablespoon of molasses in a glass of milk.

Don't forget about a glass of warm milk before bed; it does work.

A teaspoon of honey in a cup of hot water is said to induce sleep.

Another old-fashioned remedy is to take two teaspoons of cider vinegar with two teaspoons honey in a glass of warm water.

Ask your spouse which sleeping position you sleep most soundly in; try to assume that position upon retiring.

Don't go for 8 hours of sleep; you may only need 4 to 6 hours.

Spend no more than 3 minutes thinking about the day's problems when you are in bed.

If you find it difficult to sleep with your spouse, try getting twin beds or separate bedrooms.

The optimum temperature for sleep is 60 to 64 degrees F.

Relax before bed in a warm bath.

Buy a humidifier to keep your room warm in the winter without drying out the air too much.

Add a tablespoon of dry mustard powder to your before-bed bath.

Add baking soda to the bath water.

Footbaths before bed help.

Before bed, listen to relaxing music.

When you are in bed, recall the happiest experiences of your life.

Ask someone to read aloud to you in bed before you go to sleep.

Lie on your back in bed and relax each muscle in your body.

Visualize various parts of your body relaxing.

Concentrate on doing some deep breathing as you lie in bed.

If all else fails, try counting sheep; it's an age-old cure and has helped many an insomniac get a good night's sleep.

(Article) - A-Z of Skin Care Beauty Tips

Adopt a beauty routine now.

Bin all the products that you haven't used in the last six months and buy one's that you really need.

Cut out the cigarettes. They make your teeth yellow, give you spots, make you smell and can kill you. "Need I say any more".

Drink plenty of water. At least 8 glasses a day.

Exercise. Experts say that exercise isn't just good for your health but also for your skin.

Feed your skin. Eat five portions of fresh fruit or vegetables per day to keep your skin clear.

Greasy skin is a no-no. Choose oil-free moisturisers.

Heat is bad for your skin. Yes heat can dry your skin out so cool down.

Irritated skin needs a break. Don't conceal it with makeup unless you really have to. The more make-up you apply to your skin the worse you will look as you age.

Kissing is good for exercising the face muscles. So go on get snogging.

Leg waxing will keep your legs clean, soft and will make them feel and look good also.

Moisturise your skin daily.

Neck moisturising will slow your aging and stop the lines showing as much.

Oh-no. Don't squeeze those spots. Squeezing spots leave scars and will make your face look like a mass of craters.

Puffed eyes, use cucumbers.

Quit eating junk food. It poisons your skin.

Remove make-up before going to sleep.

Soap free. Don't use soap or scented products on your face.

The T-Zone hot spot that's across your forehead and down the bridge of your nose is where most grease is found.

Understand your skin and care for it's specific needs.

Vitamin supplements are a quick-fix solution when you are on the go but don't forget to include vitamins into your every day food.

Waste not want not make a face pack from the things in your cupboard.

Exfoliate - but go easy on yourself. Once a week is enough.

You, you, you. Go on treat yourself. Spend a whole day relaxing and pampering yourself. Or better still get a man to do it for you. AH heaven.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzz - get at least 8 hours a day.

You add any fragrance you desire with essential oils as well as add a touch of color to your bath salts.

Blend together:

2 cups of powdered milk - 1 cup of cornstarch

Then if you choose you can add food coloring two drops at a time to get the desired color.

Then blend in approx. 10 drops of the essence oil of your choice for fragrance.

Store in a non-porous container for about 1 week.

Use 1/2 cup per bath and enjoy!

(Article) - How To Choose an Over The Counter Acne Medication

There are literally hundreds of various treatments available to reduce acne. There is everything from all natural herbal remedies, to powerful chemical pharmaceuticals such as Accutane.

However, the most commonly used acne treatments in the United States are over the counter acne medications. They are generally inexpensive when compared to prescription medications, and some work very well.

Benzoyl peroxide is the most commonly used over the counter acne medication, and for good reason; Benzoyl peroxide is one of the most effective acne treatments available.

A 5% solution is usually all that is needed to treat acne, and it has almost no side effects for most people who use it. Unlike antibiotics and other prescription medications, Benzoyl peroxide can be used for months, even years at a time, and there are really no long term side effects (including a tolerance) that can be associated with it.

Furthermore, benzoyl peroxide has been compared to some of the prescription medications for acne, and it is nearly as effective as many acne antibiotics. Over all, benzoyl peroxide is the most successful over the counter acne medication.

However, there are others that can be very beneficial as well, including salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid, and it works as an astringent to remove dead skin cells. By removing the dead cells, this helps eliminate clogged pores, as well as help the skin renew itself faster.

Since acne is caused by p.bacteria that builds up in sebum in the pores of the skin, it is very important for the sebum to have a way of draining out of the pores before it becomes infected. Once salicylic acid is used to eliminate the dead skin cells, then the sebum is much less likely to become trapped under the skin and infected.

Salicylic acid is often sold as a makeup remover, but it is most commonly used in acne treatment via stridex pads or oxy pads.

Sulfur is also used in some over the counter acne medications. Sulfur is one of the oldest acne treatments, and reacts with the skin in such a way that it makes it dry, and peel. This works on acne by drying out the Sebum, and therefore, stopping the bacterial growth.

Many soaps and facial cleansers have sulfur in them. Sulfur is effective in getting rid of whiteheads and blackheads. It doesn't work well against the more inflamed cystic acne. One of the drawbacks is that it can increase skin cell adhesion to the skin, and therefore help cause more pimples in the future. It is best to use a gentle exfoliator when using sulfur to treat acne.

Sulfur also has a strong odor, and some people have skin that reacts harshly to sulfur, causing excessive redness and peeling.

Resorcinol is another over-the-counter chemical that is used to treat a variety of skin conditions, including acne. It works by breaking down hard skin. For acne, this means less clogged pores, and faster skin growth. Resorcinol is commonly used with sulfur to treat acne. It is also good for eczema and dandruff.

Because it is a strong chemical, don't use resorcinol with other astringents or cleansers unless advised by a dermatologist to do so.

These are the most commonly used over the counter acne treatments. For anyone who is suffering from acne, these 4 over-the-counter treatments have a good chance of helping to reduce or eliminate acne.

You of course want to wash your face but you want to make sure you do it gently to help to keep it looking great.

Here are a few simple recipes you can use to make your own face cleansers that are gentle on your skin. They are quick easy and don't take a lot of time at all. Great looking skin was never so easy!

1. Wash your face in equal parts of lemon juice and hot water.

2. Split one or two large grapes in half and after removing the pips you just run the inside of the grapes over your face and neck.

3. This recipe requires a little more work but not much. Just combine about 1/2 cup of oatmeal with some plain yogurt. This must be refrigerated and only will keep for about 5 - 7 days depending on the expiration date of your yogurt.

Oatmeal is great at softening skin and also helps to heal dry itchy skin by the way.

We hope you enjoy these simple ways to help keep your skin soft, healthy, and looking great.

(Article) - Sunless Tanning Lotion: What You Should Be Considering

As you probably know, sunless tanning lotion has been around for years. Back when these lotions were young sunless tanners were limited to just a products offering very little color variety. Depending on skin type, these sunless lotions either provided decent results or you were left with horrible looking skin color, streaks, and blotching.

Due to increase in demand and advances in sunless technology, you can easily find a wide range of tanning lotions that can provide high quality results resembling that of a natural tan. Since there is a WIDE range of products, various colors, and scents to choose from, you will most assuredly find one that works best for you. Yet that is also the downfall! Which sunless tanning lotion is the best?

There is no quick and easy answer to this question. What works for one person may not work well for another. The trick is to find the one that works best for the individual tanner.

With the various skin types as well as product formulations it would be difficult to recommend just one particular tanning lotion. So instead, we've made this general list of things to keep in mind while shopping for tanning lotion, gel, and mousse.

Skin Type

When looking for a tanning lotion the first thing sunless tanners should keep in mind is skin type. This means oily skin, dry skin, combination skin, skin tone, and natural tanning ability.

There are a variety of products on the market for different skin types. With each of these products there will be differences in the way it reacts and looks on your skin. Because of this, most tanners will have to test a variety of products to find the best one for them.

DHA - Dihydroxyacetone

DHA is the most common ingredient found in sunless tanning products. After application, DHA simply reacts to the amino acids and protein found in the outer layer of the skin. This reaction in dead skin cells produces a change in skin color that can last for days. The amount of DHA applied will determine how dark the color gets.

DHA is the only tanning additive approved by the FDA for external cosmetic use. It has been used for years without any known toxic effects other than allergic reaction by a select few users.

There are some alternatives that are being devloped for and used in sunless tanning lotion. All of them are yet to be approved safe by the FDA and may have toxic effects.

Bronzer and Tints

A bronzer or tint is nothing more than a temporary coloring. It instantly colors the skin rather than producing a chemical reaction as DHA does. Some lotions are strictly bronzers and some contain both DHA and bronzer.

Most sunless tanning lotions will be DHA and bronzer mix. This is done to give the tanner an immediate tan since the DHA tan may take an hour to even start appearing and up to 24 hours for it to deepen. Bronzers also acts like a guide so the tanner can see where and how the lotion is applied helping to eliminate mistakes and flaws.

Most tints and bronzers will wash off in after your first shower. Usually this is done after the DHA waiting period has ended.

Clear Lotions

When shopping for sunless lotions you will come across some that are clear when applied. Usually these are for tanners who are not in a rush for a tan. The major downfall is the inability to judge where and how heavily the lotion is applied. More experienced tanners have learned to manage with these types of lotions.

UVA and UVB protection

Most sunless tanning lotions do not contain any UVA and UVB protection. Some lotions do have slight protection but usually it is inadequate or lasts very long. It is recommended that you still apply a sunscreen to protect your skin.

Face Safe

Although, DHA has been approved by the FDA to be safe for cosmetic use, the question still remains when it comes into contact with eyes, lips, mucus membranes, and inhalation. Before you slap on any tanning lotion to your face it is wise to make sure it is safe. Even if the manufacturer claims that their lotion is safe for the face, if it contains DHA it would be wise to take precautions. The FDA recommends that you do so.

Scents

Tanning lotions just do not smell all that good. Actually, they stink unless some sort of scent inhibitor or cover is added. Be careful because some lotions cover scents can also be quite overwhelming! Just keep in mind that if it contains DHA it will have an odor and most of the time the smell just can't be covered no matter if a fragrance has been added.

Added Moisturizer

There are many tanning lotions with added moisturizer. This moisturizer is especially helpful due to the fact that the DHA can dry the skin. The color from DHA tans resides in dead skin cells. When this dead skin dries it becomes scaly and sheds very easily reducing the tan length as well as appearance. Tanners with chronic dry skin may appreciate this benefit from added moisturizer.

Oil-Free Lotions

Usually tanners with very oily skin will want a sunless lotion that contains no added oil. Most tanning gels are noted for being oil-free and it may be wise to take a look at these.

Antioxidants and Vitamins

Some brands may contain added antioxidants and vitamins to their sunless products. This is to help protect and nourish the skin.

Drying Time

Some tanning lotions seen to take forever to dry while others dry in the matter of minutes. Sometimes it is difficult to wander around half-naked waiting for the lotion to dry. Usually if they remain wet you will not be able to put any clothing on as the clothing may rub off some of the tanning agent as well as stain.

All Natural

For those who prefer not to use any synthetic chemical and ingredients there is hope! There ARE sunless tanning lotions on the market with all natural ingredients.

Kits

Lotion kits are a combination of tanner and maintenance and pre-treatment products. Usually in these kits you will fin a pre-treatment that typically exfoliates the skin and help moisturize as well as lotions and sprays to help maintain the sunless tan.

Just a Few Sunless Product Brands To Get You Started:

Coppertone

Neutrogena

Jan Tana

Cellex-C

Banana Boat

Alba Botanica

Australian Gold

No-Ad

Fake Bake

Dr. Michelle Copeland

Arizona Sun

Panama Jack

Pro Tan

Since sunless tanning products have improved and are continuing to improve, it is well worth picking up a product and just experiment. Follow the instructions! When you do find the right one your skin will look absolutely amazing!

1. Most wigs require washing every two to three weeks.

2. When washing your wig use a mild shampoo. You should only use warm water and never hot water. You can soak it in a shampoo and water solution for 15 minutes or so.

3. Never scrub because it causes tangles.

4. Squeese the shampoo through from top to bottom.

5. Thoroughly rinse with warm water.

6. Then follow up with a conditioner soak. Your wig will look much better is you use plenty of conditioner as well.

7. Squeeze the conditioner through from top to bottom as well.

8. Rinse your it thouroughly with plent of warm water.

9. When combing your wig start at the bottom and work your way up to the top. Always brush downward and not upward.

10. You can set your wig and allow it to dry naturally or use a warm blow dryer is desired. Avoid extremely hot temperatures.

11. After the it is completely dry you can brush the it into the style you like. You may also use a curling iron on your natural (not synthetic) wig if desired.
