(Article) - Free Bridal Shower Games And Ideas

Bridal Shower Games

1. You should have an icebreaker to start with. Get some name stickers and put everyone's name on one along with a word associated with weddings. (If everyone knows each other you can skip the names). Some words would be dress, bouquet, honeymoon, flowers, invitations, etc.. Whatever word is on your name sticker you cannot say it or you loose your name sticker. Whoever has the most stickers by refreshment time wins.

2. Get some spices and take off the labels, or take some of each spice and put in a baggie or small tupperware container. (If you use the bottles they came in the bride could take them home as a gift.) Number the spices and have the guests see how many they can identify by look and smell.

3. Get some small paper bags, number them, and fill them with common household items. Ex: remote for tv, bandaids, toothpaste, soap, clothespin, diaper, washcloth, spoon, etc. Then see who can identify the most items (without opening the bag of course).

4. Fill a bowl with long grain white rice and add 15 safety pins. See who can fish out the most safety pins (blindfolded) in 30 seconds.

5. Pick some famous married couples and you supply the last name and they need to come up with the first names. Brady's - Michael and Carol, Huxtable's - Claire and Cliff, Clinton's - Hillary and Bill, Flinstone's - Fred and Wilma, the list goes on and can include as many as you would like.

6. Have everyone fill out a small envelope with their name and address. Then you pick one out of a bowl and they win a prize. The benefit of this game is the bride already has her envelopes addressed correctly to send out thank you's.

7. Memory Game with a Twist. Have someone come out with a tray of items and say we are now going to test your skills of observation. Most will assume they need to remember the items on the tray. You can then ask them questions about the person who brought out the tray. What color was her shirt, was she wearing earrings, any nail polish, what kind of shoes, etc...

8. Finish the saying. Pick a number of famous sayings and you provide the first part and they need to write down the end of it. Example:

A stitch in time - saves nine.

A penny saved - is a penny earned.

If the shoe fits - wear it.

A miss is - as good as a mile.

A house is - not a home.

A good man - is hard to find.

Actions speak - louder than words.

A watched pot - never boils.

Fish and guests - smell in three days.

Better late - than never.

Still waters - run deep.

Spare the rod - and spoil the child.

Waste not - want not.

(Article) - Wedding Dress Why White

Before the 1800's most brides chose to wear blue to follow this old English rhyme.

Married in white, you have chosen all right,
Married in green, ashamed to be seen,
Married in grey, you will go far away,
Married in red, you will wish yourself dead,
Married in blue, you will always be true,
Married in yellow, ashamed of your fellow,
Married in black, you will wish yourself back,
Married in pink, of you he'll think.

After Queen Victoria chose to wed Prince Albert (in the 1840's) in a fabulous gown made of white lace that became the wedding dress color of choice.

We all are familiar with the English rhyme: "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence for her shoe." But we sometimes forget what it is suppose to represent.

Something old is representative of the bride's past, and something new is the symbol of her hopes for the future. Something borrowed, preferably from a happily married woman, will bring good luck. Something blue, because blue is the traditional color of fidelity, signifies the bride's commitment to her husband and the marriage. Finally, the silver sixpence, or penny, acts as a charm to bring wealth to the newly married couple.

Veils in turn used to represent the brides purity and modesty. Now they are used to add to the final touches of a wedding dress and to frame the bride's face.

(Article) - Wedding Toasts: The 10 Commandments of Toasting...and the 5 Big Mistakes to Avoid

The only one required to propose a Wedding Toast is the Best Man, but watch out for some competition...many weddings are now including a toast from the Maid of Honor as well!

The 10 Commandments of Toasting

1. Plan to speak from 1 to 4 minutes. No one wants to be bored with an extraordinarily long toast covering the entirety of your friendship. With wedding toasts, even a short toast will do if delivered with feeling and sincerity.

2. Make sure all other glasses are full before beginning. You may want to announce to the guests, or have the MC announce to the guests, to fill their glasses because toasting will commence shortly. Then give guests 3 - 5 minutes to fill their glasses.

3. Stand to give a toast (sit to receive one) and hold your glass with your right hand as you toast. After the toast, it is tradition to then clink the glasses together before sipping.

4. Start with something personal. How the bride and groom met is always a favorite. You can also use humor or quotes to get started.

5. Always use humor in good taste. While poking fun at the bride and groom can add the touch of humor you're looking for, poking too much fun will only gain you a disapproving audience.

6. Speak in your normal voice, and avoid unnatural hand gestures or fake accents. Wedding audiences want to hear what you have to say, not watch a drama unfold. Just remember you were chosen to be you, not someone else.

7. Practice your toast. Unless you are an accomplished public speaker, just 'winging it' for the wedding toast is always a bad idea.

8. Look around the room at the audience and to the bride and groom as you toast. Eye contact is an important characteristic of a good speaker.

9. Speak clearly and don't rush. Take your time and take a deep breath, because if you speak too fast, no one is going to understand you.

10. And finally, finish your toast with a wish, blessing, congratulations, or cheers.

5 of the Biggest Mistakes to Avoid

1. Having more than one drink to calm nerves beforehand. It may seem like a good idea, but besides calming your nerves, too much alcohol will also keep you from speaking clearly and hinder your good judgment of appropriate speech material.

2. Swearing and/or lying.

3. Apologizing for being a bad speaker - Never apologize for being a bad speaker, and don't say you really didn't want to speak. It's a rule for all speeches and all occasions, not just weddings.

4. Mentioning previous girlfriends, past marriages, or past relationships. Not only could it be potentially embarrassing, but it's inappropriate at a wedding. Leave this for the stag party.

5. Stories about the Bride and Groom that aren't rated PG. Remember, Grandma, Grandpa and possibly even children will be present at the wedding. Make sure your stories are appropriate for the audience.

So here's to your next toast, my friend, may it be a sweet success!

(Article) - So You Want To Make Your Own Wedding Favors?

Well you can, and they can be beautiful and unique with your own personal touch. I notice that a lot of brides are trying to find ideas to make their own original wedding favors. I know that you want something that your guest will love that gets them into the joy of the day!

Lets start with some important tips for getting started with your search for the perfect favor to make. First you have to start early. I know that wedding planning usually begins about 18 months before the wedding. Do not leave your wedding favor as a last minute detail. Think about what you want to make and then shop around for the best prices. You can find the best prices at craft stores after holidays like Valentine's Day, Christmas and Thanksgiving. Also, you can go to your local party stores and find materials that you can use for your favors. They usually have very good sales after the holidays. Always be on the lookout for the materials you need because you might just find them for next to nothing at any store.

Next you need to find something that you can make yourself. There are a lot of good ideas but some of them are not for everyone. For instance, I can't sew so I stay away from projects that require me to sew more than a simple stitch. Try to pick something that will be easy for almost anyone to put together because you will probably have an assembly line of helpers, especially since most weddings have more than 100 guests.

Well here are some of the steps to creating that wedding favor you and your guest will love! First, you will need to answer a few questions:

What is something unique about you, the Bride?

What is your favorite hobby?

What is something that you and your fiancé love to do?

What message do you want to convey to your guest?

What is the mood of your wedding, like formal, party time, or family get together?

Is there a theme to your reception?

Is your wedding during a holiday like Christmas or Thanksgiving?

Do you want the guest to keep the favor or just eat it?

When you answer these questions, you'll be able to come up with a lot of ideas for favors that you might want to have. While answering the questions, don't restrict yourself to the traditional. I've recently seen request on many message boards for very unique favors like military favors, bowling favors, and especially destination wedding favors. For example, if you are an avid stamp collector, then develop your favor around this interest.

The next step is to develop a miniature representation of your theme or hobby. For example for the Christmas wedding, you could find tiny pine trees and decorate them with candies and ribbon as ornaments. Make sure you make the favor as simple as possible, so it is easy to assemble. This is especially important for large weddings.

The final step is to go to the craft store and look around for materials to make your idea. For example with the stamp collector, that person could get some card stack or post cards and print out a Stamp with the happy couple, a message for guests and the price in the corner like an actual stamp. They could attach these cards to envelope or tulle with candy.

There are so many things in the craft store that will inspire ideas in the creative bride. You can even start with this step and just look around and see what you can find. There are so many miniature materials that you can develop into beautiful craft ideas. Also, don't just go to the wedding aisle of the craft store, look around the whole store. Wedding favors can be made with just about anything. Popsicle sticks, Forsterä WoodsiesÒ, and plastic spoons are just a few materials that you can use. If you plan on making your own favors and you want something unique then take time to develop your idea and make it personal to you! You will save money and you will definitely love the outcome!

(Article) - Wedding Gift-Giving Guidelines

Whether you're planning a wedding, or attending one, gift-giving plays an important role in the "big day."

Here are some guidelines to help answer some questions on this part of the wedding process.

Tips for the Wedding Guest

Tips for the Wedding Couple

FOR THE WEDDING GUEST

So you've been invited to a wedding? Are you wondering what to do about the somewhat obligatory gift? Most brides and grooms have registered their gift wish list with a local department or specialty store. Does this mean you must select from this list? Not necessarily. While it is nice to help the couple complete their flatware selection or informal place settings, remember that a unique gift can be just as welcomed. With the convenience of shopping online, you can now purchase, gift wrap, enclose a personalized gift card and ship a gift to the couple without leaving your home or office.

Some things to keep in mind:

Do not take a gift to the reception. You cannot be guaranteed that the bride and groom will ever see the gift, as there is generally no security at the reception (with the possible exception being if the reception is at the home of the couple or a family member). Gifts can easily be damaged or misplaced. Remember, the last thing on the couple's mind that night will be gathering up gifts. It could easily be left behind. Send the gift to the address on the registry or the RSVP address on the wedding invitation. Etiquette says that it is a nice gesture to send a gift whether or not you plan on attending.

FOR THE COUPLE:

Planning a wedding can be a very time-consuming process. If you're like most couples today, you both work full-time, leaving little time during the week to complete the many details. Fortunately, with the explosion of the Web, many excellent resources are now available online to help you to plan your big day. You can gather ideas for your ceremony and reception, locate local vendors, read tips from those who have been there, register your gift wish list, and purchase gifts for your wedding party. Giving a token of appreciation to bridesmaids, ushers, groomsmen, and others who have taken a role in the wedding planning process has long been a custom. Afterall, these individuals are generally close friends or family members who have given of their time to help make your day special. And taking part in a wedding generally comes with financial responsibilities with the purchase or rental of wedding attire, throwing bridal showers and bachelor/bachelorette parties, and travel expenses. Giving gifts to members of the wedding party is left to the discretion of each couple. There are no set standards on the cost of the gift, nor do all gifts have to be the same. Below are some guidelines to help you decide what is most appropriate for your situation.

WHO SHOULD RECEIVE A GIFT?

The Bride and Groom - One of the oldest wedding-gift traditions is the exchange of gifts between the bride and the groom. While this custom is followed by many couples, it is not mandatory. But why not give each other something that reflects your commitment? It's best to find something that is lasting, and if appropriate, engrave it with each of your initials and your wedding date. Ideas: A picture frame, a poem, an elegant desk clock, a collectible, jewelry.

Parents - One of the more recent customs is to give a gift to your parents as a token of appreciation for all they have done in raising you - and to symbolize your continued ties even though you are now starting your own family. Ideas: A nicely framed photo from the wedding, a letter expressing your gratitude, an engravable bowl.

Maid of Honor/Bridesmaids - These are the women who will be helping you with the wedding planning and the actual day. They'll throw showers/parties for you, take you out to lunch to relax, pick up your dress from the seamstress, etc. They'll also most likely be the ones to buy those dresses and dyed shoes that they'll wear only once. So it is nice to thank them with a small memento. The Maid of Honor generally receives a gift of greater value, but this is not mandatory. Ideas: Bud vases, photo frames or albums, bath oils, crystal bowls, gift baskets, Limoges boxes or other collectibles, key chains, clocks, some part of their wedding attire (hair clips, jewelry).

Best Man/Groomsmen/Ushers - These are the guys who will throw the bachelor party, help you with your tuxedo, help with honeymoon arrangements, walk family and friends to their seats during the ceremony, etc. They may travel a long distance to make the wedding, and will most likely rent their tuxedo to match the rest of the wedding party. It is therefore a nice gesture to thank them with a small gift. The Best Man generally receives a gift of greater value, but this is not mandatory. Ideas: Desk clocks, business card holders, photo frames, key chains, pocket watches, Swiss Army products, high quality pens/pen sets.

Flowergirl(s)/Ring Bearer(s) - These children add a sweet touch to your wedding ceremony and they are thrilled to be a part of such a grand event. While they generally do not play a large part in the planning aspects of the wedding, they do often spend a lot of time practicing for their "big and important role" in your wedding. It is generally customary to give them a small token of appreciation to commemorate their role in your wedding day. Ideas: A framed photo of him/her with you on your wedding day, a small collectible (figurine, box, bowl, etc.), a small item of jewelry, a stuffed animal, a hair clip.

Anyone who plays a special part in your wedding - Do you have a special uncle who walked you down the aisle, or a friend who sang a solo during your ceremony? Anyone who does something that you find especially touching should receive a token of appreciation. Ideas: A note expressing your appreciation or a framed photo from the wedding.

SIZE OF THE WEDDING PARTY

If you will be having a large wedding party, it is oftentimes a better idea to choose two gifts - one for the males and one for the females - and buy them in bulk. This helps keep costs down (large weddings can be expensive!) and helps save time. Clocks, pens, key rings and photo frames all make elegant statements and can be easily personalized with engraving.

For smaller wedding parties, you may opt to select more personalized gifts for each member of the wedding. Tickets to a local sporting event are great for the sports fan, while a bottle of a good vintage wine would be more appropriate for the wine connoisseur. Generally these people will have played very active roles in your wedding planning, since they number fewer than in a larger wedding party. Why not recognize their roles with individualized gifts?

COST OF GIFTS

Couples on a budget need not worry about breaking the bank when purchasing gifts for their wedding party. The cost of the gifts is dictated by what the couple can afford. The adage "It's the thought that counts" holds true here. A little creativity and thoughtfulness can go a long way. Write a poem that expresses how you feel about the individual. Do they like outdoor events? Offer to take them camping - drive and bring the food. Other ideas include creative gift baskets, small vases, clocks, and spa items (bath oils, soaps, etc.). Whatever you chose to do, all gifts for bridesmaids should be of equal value, all gifts for groomsmen should be of equal value, etc., whenever possible.

PRESENTATION OF THE GIFTS

Presentation of a gift is almost as important as the gift itself. First, be sure to enclose a short, personalized note thanking the individual for the important role he or she played in your wedding and mention any details that you especially appreciated. Second, be sure to elegantly wrap the gift. Nice paper, bows, and tissue paper help to make a nice gift even more charming. Some couples opt to incorporate the wedding colors into the gift wrap, tissues and bows.

When should you give your wedding party their gifts? Generally, couples prefer to present the gifts at the rehearsal dinner because of the intimate setting with your family and closest friends. Other appropriate times include a small gathering or party for your wedding party the week before the wedding, or in a private setting where you can express your gratitude to each participant individually.

There is, however, one nagging dilemma: the children (both yours and his). How can the traditional wedding, which focuses exclusively on the bride and groom, be reconfigured to recognize the critical role that children play in the remarriage relationship?

That question plagued mother and bride-to-be Laura Clemmer, who spent months scouring wedding magazines. "My fiancé Paul (Kotz) and I wanted to do something concrete during our wedding to show my children -- 2-year-old Allison and 5-year-old Nathan -- that we were creating a new family," she says.

Laura and Paul were discouraged when the initial search for a family-oriented wedding ceremony proved fruitless. They were concerned that Nathan, who had early on been enthusiastic about his mom's marriage plans, began expressing some doubts. "Will you and Paul get divorced?" asked the preschooler, who still remembered the pain of his parents' divorce several years earlier.

The Greensboro, N.C., couple was grappling with a problem experienced by most of the more than 1 million single parents who remarry in the United States each year: What can be done to ease the concerns of children who feel, on a conscious or unconscious level, that their secure place in the family is threatened by the pending marriage of a parent?

After much research, Laura found a simple and emotionally satisfying answer in the form of a family-oriented wedding service that gives children a meaningful role. This 5-minute ceremony -- called the Family Medallion service -- can be integrated into any religious or civil wedding ceremony. It differs from the traditional wedding in only one respect: After the newlyweds exchange rings, their children join them for a special service focusing on the family nature of remarriage. Each child is given a gold or silver medal (Family Medallion) with three interlocking circles, a symbol that represents family love in much the same way the wedding ring signifies conjugal love. (The medallion is available in the form of a pendant, ring or lapel pin.)

The Kotzes say they will never forget the moment during their wedding when Nathan and Allison were summoned to their sides to participate in the family wedding service. While the minister recited the words of the ceremony -- a pledge to love and care for all the children either spouse brings to the marriage -- Laura and Paul presented Nathan and Allison with Family Medallions. Then the hugging started.

"I don't mean to be trite, but it was really a bonding experience," recalls step-dad Paul. "I especially wanted Nathan, who was old enough to understand what was going on, to know that I wasn't just marrying Laura; I was making a commitment to be there for him and his sister. I could see from the way his eyes lit up that he understood. I will never forget it."

Laura Kotz says her family-oriented wedding was everything she had hoped it would be. "I could not have found a better way to communicate to my kids that, by marrying Paul, we were all coming together as a family," she adds.

Most of the guests attending the Clemmer/Kotz wedding were touched to tears by the family ceremony. "People later told us how wonderful it was that we did something so special for the children," Laura recalls.

The family wedding concept is an idea whose time has come since at least one-third of all new marriages in the United States involve divorced or widowed parents with children under 18 living in the home, according to the Stepfamily Association of America.

But finding family-oriented ceremonies is no easy task. "Although I have many books on wedding ceremonies, not one of them contains a wedding ritual that recognizes children from previous marriages," says Dr. C. Fred Werhan, the Baptist minister who officiated at the Clemmer-Kotz wedding. "That was OK 35 years ago, when practically every wedding involved people who had never been married before. But things have changed dramatically since then. Today, in half the couples that I marry, at least one spouse has been married before."

Werhan says he was very excited when he read about a family wedding service developed by a Kansas City minister. "There's nothing else like it that I know about," he adds. "Now I tell many of the couples that I marry about it."

The family service -- along with the Family Medallion -- was developed more than 15 years ago by Dr. Roger Coleman, chaplain of Pilgrim Chapel in Kansas City. "A marriage with children is a lot more than simply the union of a man and a woman," he says. "It is a merging of families. Every day I see how divorce creates a sense of failure and hopelessness in people. The family ceremony is a sign of hope and an important step in rebuilding the devastation of the family."

Today, more than 15,000 couples a year -- primarily in the United States, Canada and Europe -- use the Family Medallion ceremony to help cement the bond between parents, stepparents and children. "It really works," says Dr. Werhan, who has adapted Coleman's family service for many weddings. "A family-oriented wedding that includes giving youngsters a tangible symbol of love like the Family Medallion is a great way to make children entering a blended family feel secure."

Sharon Stober Barry, the editorial director of Your Stepfamily magazine, agrees. In fact, she used the Family Medallion service to acknowledge her son and stepdaughter when she remarried in 2000. "The family-oriented wedding is much more than just a nice thing to do," she insists. "You are pledging to your kids and his kids that you are going to accompany them on their journey through life."

Nathan Clemmer, now a kindergartner, knows a lot more about little league than about life journeys. But he treasures the Family Medallion lapel pin his step-dad gave him when Laura and Paul Kotz married last year. His mother says that Nathan sometimes climbs atop his chest of drawers to snatch the lapel pin from the box where it is stored for safekeeping. "I like to wear it," he announces proudly. "It means I'm part of this family."

(Article) - Appropriate Children's Clothing for the Smallest Members of the Wedding Party

I receive many frantic calls from brides-to-be who have not yet picked out a flower girl dress, despite a calendar rapidly approaching their special occasion. Sometimes the call is from a frantic mother who was bestowed the "honor" of picking out the flower girl dress, having just learned that her daughter was a late addition to the wedding party. I have even received an email from a concerned grandmother trying to outfit her grandsons for a family wedding party held on a beach. As finding the right clothes for the youngest members of the wedding party is often a complicated assignment, I have tried to simplify this task by preparing this guide.

The bride-to-be wants to complement the overall tone and mood of the wedding party, whether formal or informal, while still having the children stand out from the older members of the wedding party. To accomplish this, however, there are a number of factors that must be taken into consideration before selecting the right apparel. Children like to play and run around, no matter the occasion, and generally do not like fussy clothing. Also, since the expense of the children's clothing is usually borne by the child's parents, mom and dad would prefer to find appropriate children's clothing that could be worn again at another occasion.

The general requirements are that the children's clothing must be beautiful, in keeping with the rest of the wedding party, practical for future wear, and kid proof. All in all, a tall order to fill.

Clothing that complements the wedding party. The children's clothing, like the bridesmaid's dresses, should be a reflection of the bride and the style and mood that she wants to convey on her special day. Remember, the first ones down the aisle are the flower girl and ring bearer! In order for the clothing of the junior members of the wedding party to be consistent with that of the bride, groom, bridesmaids, and ushers, it should be similar in style, color, and possibly fabric, but may be a bit more unconventional. A bride can have more flexibility and fun with the children's apparel. Their clothes can make a special comment about the bride's unique style that may not be completely conveyed through the elegant bridal clothing, flowers and setting. For this reason, I like to think that children's clothing can serve as an exclamation point to the entire wedding scene!

Because children's clothing can play such an important role, regardless of the setting, the clothing should be:

Elegant, yet suitable to the setting of the occasion. The flower girl's dress may be different in color than the bridesmaid's dresses, picking up a coordinating color from the flowers in the bridal bouquets. This flower girl would stand out without drawing away attention from the rest of the party.

Unique. The clothing should have special touches such as beautiful detailing at the neckline, trim and waist.

High Quality. The fabric should have body and a nice lining. The clothing needs to hold up, especially if the wedding is outdoors in the warm weather.

Age Appropriate. For example, a 4-year-old girl in a strapless gown would not be appropriate.. If there are a number of flower girls of different ages, consider each wearing different cuts of the same fabric, in a slightly altered style that reflects their age.

Practicality. The children's clothing should be comfortable, especially considering the children are on display in what is normally an uncomfortable situation for them. During pictures, you would not want the ring bearer pulling at his collar. Overly fussy clothing can be a hindrance. Kids are active and are going to run around at an outdoor wedding, so avoid selecting clothing that will be untied or coming loose prior to the ceremony or during the reception when photos are still being taken.

Since the children's parents are typically paying for the outfits, they would like to buy quality items that could accommodate additional wearing. I've been told that some bridal shop clothes are designed for a single wearing and are intentionally poorly constructed in order to keep the cost down. However, such bridal shop clothing is still not inexpensive, making it worth paying a bit more for quality and the ability for future wearing.

Regarding future wear, although some children's clothing appropriate for weddings is formally tailored, many styles are less formal as you can see on the links below. Often formal styles can be made appropriate for less formal wear with only minor alterations, such as hem shortening.

Regardless of who is picking out the children's clothing, the parents should get the bride's approval and vice versa. Good communication will ensure that everyone is happy on that special day.

I recently had the pleasure of being interviewed by Sharon Naylor, for her newest wedding book, "The Complete Outdoor Wedding Planner". Sharon, a recognized expert on wedding planning, has made appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show, the Today Show and others, and has helped countless brides with her 8 books covering the many aspects of wedding planning. Please visit Sharon's website, http://www.sharonnaylor.net, to learn more about her work.

On the following pages, I have provided some specific suggestions for children's clothing and girls dresses that are appropriate for flower girls, junior groomsmen and ring bearers. Suggestions are presented based on the setting of the wedding. I hope you will find this helpful, and, as always, don't hesitate to call me to discuss your specific situation.

You've known them for years... you got chicken pox together... you kissed a boy first... she got her driver's license first... ah the memories. So why do you want to make her wear a dress that makes her look like she's been attacked by a giant cotton-candy? You don't... but how to find a bridesmaid dress that looks good on everyone from your size 2 friend to your size 42 friend? And how do you pick a color that looks good on your red-head friend and your Asian friend?

It's really not that hard. Notice, I didn't say it was necessarily that easy. But, hey, you found the right guy, the right gown... you can do this! Like everything else, take it step by step.

Step One: Style

Your bridesmaid dresses should complement the style of your gown. They don't need to be identical though. If your gown is an A-Line, you're not restricted to A-Line bridesmaid dresses. However, if your gown is a fairy-tale ballgown, you won't want your maids' dresses to be modern or high fashion. You want an overall theme and aesthetic flow.

The basic styles for bridesmaid dresses are A-Line, Empire or Sheath. There are a few ballgown styles. Most are floor length.

Maid Style

Flatters

A-Line or Princess

Almost every figure. Especially great when your maids range in size.

Empire

Good for most maids. Helps add height to petite maids. The loose fit waist is great for pregnant bridesmaids.

Ballgown

Works best if all your maids are relatively close in size. Otherwise makes small maids look smaller and larger maids look larger. Great on busty brides.

Sheath

Works best if all your maids are relatively close in size.

Step Two: Color

Your bridesmaid dresses' color is usually the color for your wedding. You'll use touches to accent your decorations and help carry a unifying theme through your entire wedding and reception. For example, if you've decided you want Dark Purple, you might use dark purple and light purple flowers, purple ink on your invitations, purple bows on the chairs,...

As you begin to choose the color, think about your wedding and reception site. If your church has dark red carpet, those pretty Peach dresses might clash. If your reception site is full of dark wood and burgundy carpet, then your burgundy bridesmaids and accents might all blend in.

Finally, think about your bridesmaids. Think about their coloring and what colors they look good in. Does Susy look great in red but horrid in grey? What about Joan? Here's a little list to help.

Hair / Skin

Great Colors

Good Colors

Bad Colors

Blonde / Fair

Pastels, Navy, Hunter, Orangy-Reds, Salmon, Turquoise, Dark Purple

Black, Jewel Tones, Browns, Burgundy, Blues, Cobalt

Some light to medium shades of grey, Silver

Asian

Jewel Tones, Reds, Ivory, Turquoise, Jade Green, Purple

Black, Navy, Hunter, Burgundy, Fuschia

Light Greys, Light Yellow, Mint, Mauve

African Medium

Navy, Jewel Tones, Reds, Silver, Gold, Salmon, Purple

Black, Hunter, Burgundy, Blues, Cobalt, Fuschia

Light Yellow, Mint, Taupe

African Dark

Jewel Tones, Reds, Silver, Gold, Salmon, Oranges, Fuschia, Lime

Black, Navy, Hunter, Burgundy, Blues, Ivory, Purple, Cobalt

Light Yellow, Mint, Lavender, White

Red-Head / Fair

Emerald Green, Navy, Ivory, Brown, Hunter Green, Peach, Purple

Black, Hunter, Blues, Mustard, Rust, Olive, Turquoise, Teal, Gold

Yellow, Blue-Reds, Mint, Mauve

Brunette / Olive

Red, Hunter Green, Navy, Brown, Cobalt

Fuschia, Charcoal, Burgundy, Peach

Aqua, Light Yellow

Brunette / Fair

Emerald Green, Red, Fuschia, Navy, Peach

Black, Hunter, Navy, Burgundy, Gold, Ivory

Light Yellow, Light Blue, Light Green

Your maids don't all have to wear the color. A wonderful Southern tradition is to have the Maid of Honor wear a different shade of the bridesmaid dresses or a totally different color. For example, if your maids are wearing Desert Blue, have your Maid of Honor wear Navy or Rose. This is wonderfully effective when you coordinate the Maid of Honor's dress color with the Best Man's vest and tie!

Another popular and pretty trend, especially for spring and summer weddings, is a "color run". That means that each bridesmaid wears a different color of the same dress. One example of a light color run might be Pink, Pale Yellow, Light Blue, Mint, Lavender. In dark colors, you might try Emerald Green, Royal Blue, Royal Purple, Red, Gold. Shades of a color also work well (red, medium pink, light pink), but you have to be very careful that the colors don't clash with each other!

You can also consider alternating colors. Half your maids in one color, half in another color. If your wedding will be near Valentine's Day you could put half in red and half in pink!

If you're going to use a color run or alternating colors, BEFORE you order the dresses for your maids, find out how tall each maid is! Your maids will walk into the ceremony, stand by your during the ceremony, exit the ceremony and be arranged in pictures based on their height. Make a list in order from shortest to tallest (leave your maid of honor off the list). Is your maid of honor at the taller end or shorter end, compared with everyone else? If she's at the tall end, then your tallest maid will be next to her and the maids will get shorter the further they stand from you. If your maid of honor is at the short end, then the shortest maid will stand next to her and the maids will get taller the further they stand from you. If this sounds a bit confusing, click here and we'll show a drawing and worksheet to help you understand.

Step Three: You're Ready to Shop!

Keep in mind the season of your wedding. You won't want your maids wearing satin and velvet in July. Likewise, chiffon dresses look out of place in a winter wedding.

You'll also want to decide if you want your maids to have sleeves. Most bridesmaid dresses today have straps with fewer having short sleeves and almost none with long sleeves. Now go shop! Of course, we think the best place to do that is our Bridesmaid Department.

BrideSave.com
BrideSave.com is the world's leading online wedding apparel store. You can shop online, choosing from thousands of wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses, flowergirl dresses, veils, shoes, invitations, bras, slips and much more, at their convenient online store.

(Article) - Cents & Sensibility Bridesmaids' Dresses Blend Affordability and Timeless Design

Quick: look in the back of your closet. How many old bridesmaids dresses are bunched into the corner that you wore when you were in a friend's wedding, but have never even looked at again?

If you're like most women, there are at least two or three, and you wince each time you think about how much you spent on that dress, how it looked on you, and how out of style it is today.

Of course, when it's your turn to be the bride and make the choices for your wedding party, you'll do no such thing to your friends.

It is possible to choose bridesmaids dresses that avoid adding to your friends' collection of "one-time wear" dresses. By looking for quality construction, fine fabrics, timeless design the ability to mix and match separates so each attendant can look her best, you can create a great looking wedding party as well as add a beautiful, useful gown to your friends' wardrobes.

"Quality construction is important not only so a gown literally stays put together, but also for the best possible fit," says Bill Levkoff, CEO of Bill Levkoff, Inc. "If a gown is well made, it shows," he says. "High-quality fabrics that suit a gown's design also make a difference between a one-wear gown and a classic gown your bridesmaids will look forward to wearing on other special occasions."

One especially useful feature Bill Levkoff dresses have is the availability of separates, providing the ability to mix and match different styles, colors and sizes for the best possible fit. This way each bridesmaid can wear what looks best for her figure, while still maintaining a coordinated look for the entire group.

"By offering skirts and tops separately, your attendants can choose different lengths, styles and a wide range of colors. It won't matter if one attendant is leggy and another has wide hips or one wants sleeves when another is willing to go sleeveless," Levkoff says. "Everyone can get what she prefers and all look great."

Bill Levkoff, Inc., offers three lines of formals. Champagne Formals are geared toward young women who want a sophisticated look for proms, dances or other special occasions. Moderately priced, this line features many designs that are a good choice for the bride wanting to keep wedding costs reasonable.

Levkoff's New Image line is directed at the woman whose wardrobe always reflects the latest style trends. And the Bill Levkoff line features luminous colors, graceful shapes and elegant fabrics for a timeless, feminine look that has achieved universal appeal for the past 50 years.

"By focusing over the years on high quality gowns and keeping up with design trends, the company has built a solid reputation with style-conscious women," says Bill Levkoff. "By building solid relationships with more than 2,000 retailers, the company has been able to make its gowns available all across the country."

For photos of gowns and information on all three lines of Bill Levkoff gowns, visit www.billlevkoff.com.

(Article) - Finding the Perfect Wedding Gown

Begin Looking Early!

It is best to allow four to six months for your dress to be delivered to you. Don't forget all bridal gowns will need to be altered. You'll also need to allow time to have your bridal portrait. Your goal is to have your gown 2-3 months before your wedding date.

At BrideSave.com, we have noted approximate delivery times for the dresses we showcase. Please understand, you and we are at the mercy of the dress manufacturer. 99.9% of the time the manufacturers are able to meet our shipping deadline. But, if you're going to be cutting it tight on time, go with the dress that has a delivery time well in advance of your deadline.

Magazines - A Great Place to Start

Buy 2 to 3 bridal magazines. You really don't need more (they're expensive!). More than 3 and you'll just keep seeing the same styles over and over. Tear out pictures of the dresses you like and write on the picture the magazine name and page number it came from! You'll start to notice you are drawn to certain skirt or bodice styles. Maybe you're drawn to beadwork or sweetheart necklines.

What's Your Style?

Okay, so you've got a stack of pages torn from magazines. Now what?

Step One: Contact your Church, Synagogue or Mosque

This is very important because deposits and payments for gowns are typically non-refundable! Many religious sites impose certain restrictions on what you and your party may wear. Common examples include no sleeveless gowns or no backless dresses. Check into this first to avoid expensive and devastating delays!

Step Two: Formality

Do you envision a Black Tie wedding or a simple, elegant garden setting? Once you have decided on how formal your day will be you will then be able to begin looking for your gown. Keep these rules of thumb in mind:

Formal

Semi-Formal

Informal

Daytime

White, off-white, long gown, train, long veil. Gloves are optional.

White, off-white, pastel, long gown, short or no train, short veil. Gloves optional.

White, off-white, pastel, soft pattern, short or tea-length dress, cocktail dress or suit.

Evening

White/off-white long gown, train, long veil. Gloves are optional.

White/off-white long gown, short or no train, short veil. Gloves optional.

White/off-white/ pastel/soft pattern/ brights long dinner dress or simple gown, short cocktail dress or evening suit.

Step Three: When and Where?

Will you be married at your family church in Chicago in December or at the Garden Club in New Orleans in July? One dress would probably not suit both weddings. Think of the style of your church decorated for Christmas with the cold, Chicago wind blowing off Lake Michigan versus the sultry, hot, humidity of a lazy New Orleans July day. I wouldn't want to be wearing a long, satin gown with long sleeves in New Orleans in July! Would you?

Fall/Winter try: satin, heavy damasks, heavy taffetas, moiré, heavy lace, velvet, heavy beadwork

Spring/Summer try: chiffon, tulle skirts, lightweight satins, dotted Swiss, lace

Step Four: Know Thyself

Be honest. Short, tall, average, slim, heavy, busty or hippy, there is a dress to complement your figure.

Most bridal gowns fall into one of five categories:

A-Line or Princess

Empire

Ballgown

Great on almost every figure.

Helps add height to petites. May also be combined with A-Line skirt.

Great on busty brides. Often combined with a Basque waist.

Sheath

Mermaid or Trumpet

Often have a detachabletrain.

Similar to a sheath. Great for showing off your curves!

Petite (under 5'4")

Think Gwyneth Paltrow, think Room with a View, think long vertical lines. Go for a high neckline, empire waist (if you're slim, try a full-length sheath) with short or no sleeves. No train. Add elbow length gloves and a veil no longer than floor length Try a pouf veil for more height. The long lines will add inches of visual height.

Tall (over 5'9")

Unlike the petite bride, you'll want to break up your natural vertical. Go horizontal. Look for a drop waist. Maybe a wide belt, ruffles or trim that wraps around your gown. Lower necklines and off-the-shoulder. Fuller sleeves also can help. Try a hat or fantastic veil, but don't go for a pouf veil.

Average Height & Weight (5'5" to 5'8")

Your parents were right when it came to average grades, but thank your lucky stars you're considered average here! Most dress designers style the majority of their lines for you. Look to your Grooms height. You may want to follow the guidelines for Tall or Petite Brides to help balance your height to his.

Slim

You have two options, play it up or visually fill-out. If you want to play it up follow the guidelines for petite or heavy brides. You can visually fill-out by going with a heavier fabric (velvet, damask,...), full skirt, slim waist and sleeves. You may consider a blouson bodice as well.

Heavy

Generally, add height. Read the guidelines for the Petite Bride. Go for a high waist or A-Line. Run from flouncy ruffles, clingy fabrics and big sleeves.

Busty

You probably have already learned that you don't look your best in empire, A-Lines or cinched waists. They only add to your bust. Try a V- or high neck. You may even find an attractive keyhole neckline. You may also consider limiting the amount of beadwork on the bodice as it would draw attention to your bust.

Hippy

The most dramatic way to solve this figure flaw is to go Elizabethan. Try a broad collar. Two other ways to solve this are balance or camouflage. To balance, try a hat or big, pouffy sleeves. To camouflage, go with a flared skirt, A-Line or a skirt which obviously requires a lot of petticoat.

What Size Are You?

The number size in a bridal dress is about as important to its actual size as its color is - not at all. At BrideSave.com, we show you the size charts from the manufacturer. They're based on your measurements. If you're right on the edge of two sizes, order the larger. You order your gown to fit your largest measurement size. So if your bust equals a size 14, your waist a size 12 and your hips a 12, you would order the 14. Gown sizes may be, and often are, very different than regular clothing. Remember, its easier to cut a dress down than to try to lose that last inch, especially with all the goodies at the teas and showers!

(Article) - Tuxedos 101

A primer on formalwear

OK class, listen up, we're here to review the basics of formalwear - no need to get anxious about dressing up - it's easy to look sophisticated.

First, let's review the vocabulary:

Peak lapel

This is a wider lapel that comes to a peak - just like most double breasted suits.

Notch lapel

This is the same type of lapel line that a single breasted suit has.

Shawl collar

This is a long, continuous lapel line, somewhat rounded in shape.

Single breasted

The most popular style, simple, clean and neat.

Double breasted

This fashion style features an overlapping coat with 2 rows of buttons which button to the side, rather than down the center of the coat.

Triple breasted

You're right, there's no such thing - we just wanted to be sure you were paying attention.

Cummerbund

A pleated sash worn around your waist, usually solid black, always with a bow-tie cut from the same cloth and always worn with the pleats facing up.

Wing-tip formal shirt

The most popular formal shirt style which features 2 small "triangles" for a collar.

Lay-down formal shirt

This formal shirt has a full collar - just like a dress shirt.

Stud set

4 pieces of jewelry which take the place of buttons on your formal shirt. Looks very suave.

What Should I Wear?

White Tie

This is the most formal outfit - and it is quite specific. White tie means you should be wearing a black tailcoat, matching black trouser, white pique formal shirt, white pique vest, and a white pique bow-tie. No you can't substitute a regular tuxedo for the tails - you'll get arrested by the fashion police.

Black Tie

Most formal affairs fall into this category. Black tie means you need to wear a tuxedo. Single breasted or double breasted, peak, notch, or shawl collar will do. It's your choice. Your tuxedo will need a formal shirt (no you can't just wear a white dress shirt - everyone will know you're trying to cut corners), bow-tie and cummerbund set or vest and tie set, cuff links and studs. A traditionalist will wear a black bow-tie and cummerbund set, and black, round cuff links and stud set. If you would like to be less formal then wear a vest and tie set instead of the cummerbund.

Creative Black Tie

There is no definition for this, that is, most anything goes as long as you are wearing a tuxedo jacket. One shudders to think some may voluntarily choose to wear a tuxedo jacket and bluejean cut-offs. We believe creative black tie provides you with the opportunity to wear an interesting novelty vest which makes your outfit stand out from the crowd.

T-Shirts / Pastel Colors

Absolutely, positively not! Not only would you be arrested, the fashion police would throw away the key! Keep in mind, not only do you want to look your best for this day, but you don't want to be embarrassed looking at the pictures 5 years later!

Which style is most traditional?

The most traditional tuxedo style is the single-breasted, 1-button, peak lapel tuxedo. This is where tuxedo fashions started. While this is the most traditional, it is not the most popular. The 1-button notch lapel tuxedo wins that category hands down. Nonetheless, any of the 1-button single breasted styles will last you for years to come. These styles are evergreens - always in fashion. Sure, the lapel width may fluctuate over the years, but these styles are the classics. As you venture into 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 9 button tuxedos you walk further out onto the fickle fashion world's timeline - 9 button styles will last the season, 3 button a few years, the others somewhere in between.

Formal daytime affair?

For the staunch traditionalist, formal morning and afternoon affairs require either a stroller or cutaway. These, like White Tie are very specific outfits.

Shoes

Yes formal shoes make the outfit. No it's not the end of the world if you choose regular dress shoes provided these are: basic, simple (plain toe, capped toe), clean, freshly polished to a high shine, black shoes. Formal shoes are made from shiny patent leather and are typically very simple and very dressy. They really do make the outfit look complete and they do not go out of style.

Pants

Formal trousers have a black satin stripe or braid along the outside seam. This is a relic of the trouser's military days. What if you don't like the stripe - Get over it! This is a requirement for formalwear - no stripe = no go! And never, ever cuff the pants. Cuffed formal pants require mandatory sentencing by the fashion police! Formal pants do not have belt loops. Either have your tailor alter your pants to fit without needing a belt or wear button-in suspenders (black or white only).

Baby it's cold outside

The "right" coat to wear with a tuxedo is a chesterfield topcoat. This is a grey herringbone coat with a velvet collar. Alternatively, a black full length trenchcoat will also work. If you are interested, give us a call, we do carry both coats.

etuxedo.com
Why rent when you can own at the same price? Quality and designer tuxedos at wholesale prices! You will also find valuable information on formal wear. Have a question concerning formal wear? Ask away, eTuxedo will try to help with any and all of your formal fashion questions.

For a Best Man, the thought of giving a wedding speech looks something like this:

Wedding + Speech = Nightmare!

But it doesn't have to be like that! Follow these easy steps to writing a wedding speech, and you'll look something like this:

Wedding + Speech = Standing Ovation!

Where to Start

Getting started requires pen, paper, and a little inspiration. But where can you find your inspiration? From the Bride and Groom!

Finding the answers to the following questions about the Bride and Groom will help you find your inspiration, and find out what you really want to include in your speech. Don't hold back here, write down everything that comes to mind...you will have plenty of time to edit the content later.

How long have you known the Groom? And how did you meet?

How did the Bride and Groom meet? Were you involved?

How did the Groom propose to the Bride? And what was her immediate reaction?

How long have the Bride and Groom been a couple?

Do they have children?

What are the Bride and Groom's mutual interests?

What 5 words come to mind when you think of the Groom? What 5 words come to mind when you think of the Bride?

What is the funniest thing that happened to the Groom while Bride was present? And vice-versa?

What is the funniest thing that happened to the Groom (or Bride) while you were present?

What would you like the future to hold for the Bride and Groom?

Opener

A great toast has a good opening and a good closing, so now that you've got some ideas on paper, let's look at your opener...

The first words are the hardest - and the most memorable - for the guests. Start by introducing yourself, and then keep their attention by saying something interesting right up front. Quotes and humor work well to catch your audience, but if humor isn't your style, don't feel pressured to start now. Remember to stick with something you feel comfortable with.

And if nothing else comes to mind, use the old standby, "Hi I'm [your name] and I'm [Groom's name] Best Man. I don't want to do a lot of talking tonight, but I do have a few important things I need to say."

Middle

After the opening, and before your closing "Congratulations!" take just a moment to reminisce and tell your audience a few little-known tidbits about the Bride and Groom. This is where your answers to the questions above come in.

WARNING! Absolutely no words about ex-girlfriends or past relationships, and don't say anything that will make the Groom look like a slacker, loser, drunk, or druggie. Making too much fun of the Bride and Groom is definitely not allowed.

If you choose to skip the embarrassing recollections in favor of saving face for the Groom, the middle of your speech can include a nice story of how the Bride and Groom met, or even encouraging words of advice for their future together.

If you are still unsure about the content, ask someone you know for his or her feedback. You'll be grateful for the pre-wedding audience.

Closing Toast

What's that last word you want to leave with your audience? Try finishing with a wish or blessing for the happy couple, and a resounding "Cheers!", "Congratulations!", or "To Jane and Joe!" You can also use a one-liner classic toast like "To love, laughter, and happily ever after!"

Don't forget to take a sip, you're done!
