Ice-foggy sunrise

After a few weeks of heads-down work on some educational projects this early morning walk was incredibly necessary to get back to a clear head space.. Hopes of catching a clear sunrise were dashed as I walked toward the downtown core. From across the river, entire buildings were obscured leaving an eerie feeling of nothingness where a vibrant downtown should be. I grabbed a few quick shots while I enjoyed the company of a new friend..

Looking across my back yard, the streetlights glow a reddish orange and are frequently at odds with the motion-sensor light attached to the garage. I’ve always loved how surreal it looks as I gaze out the windows.. This evening it was particularly beautiful as the hoar frost from an ice fog last night has coated everything and given it an even greater mystical feel..

Last year I compiled a series of photos most of which hang in my own house right now. While I’m busy sorting out a few other projects and setting aside the camera for a bit, I thought I’d post them for you.

This shot is one of my favourites from an abandoned farm house near the quaint town of Pouce Coupé, British Columbia.

Today was a blue day, marked by grey skies, snow, cold and the departure of an old friend. I’ve been sucking wind when it comes to grabbing the camera on the way out of the door in the morning and I found myself caught on the way to the climbing gym with nothing but a horrible blackberry telephone to capture the one item of any appreciable interest on my way there.. There isn’t much quality in a high resolution photo from these cameras so some manipulation in photoshop was necessary to avoid compete boringness..

Yesterday I hibernated and today since the studio was still set up for this stuff I thought I’d add a few more of my favourite cameras to the collection.. This Rolleiflex TLR I bought from an old camera dealer in a going out of business sale.. I’m quite fond of this unit, and it tends to accompany me when I go walkabout though I’ve used it in the studio a bit too. The image quality is excellent and the viewfinder provides a surreal feeling as you peer through it..

And this little Petri 35E belonged to my mother and was responsible for some beautifully flawed images from a trip to Japan in the late ’60’s. I know she was upset about that, however the beauty of this sort of film abuse has more than made a come back with the resurgence of lomo cameras like the Holga and the Diana.. I’ve just run my first roll of film through this unit after finding it buried deep in a desk drawer. I’ll share the results when I get the film back!

My neighbor bequeathed on a few of her old cameras to me before she passed away last year, knowing that I have a soft spot for antique photo gear. Elena was a dear lady and these cameras hold fond memories for me so I thought I’d share a few of them with you as I was playing in the studio today.
