No tengo kindle, ¿qué hago?

El dispositivo físico que vende amazon para acceder a los libros electrónicos de la plataforma kindle es, simplemente, genial. Todo está muy bien pensado para enriquecer la experiencia del lector, desde el diccionario integrado, la posibilidad de resaltar y compartir anotaciones hasta la posibilidad de compartir nuestra biblioteca entre múltiples dispositivos físicos. Por ello, adquirir uno de estos aparatos, es una experiencia de la cual nunca nos vamos a arrepentir. Hay muchos modelos, en particular soy fanático del kindle Paperwhite, cuya tecnología con gotas de tinta bajo la pantalla asemeja mucho la experiencia de leer en papel (Kindle Paperwhite, 6″ High-Resolution Display (212 ppi) with Built-in Light, Wi-Fi – Includes Special Offers), pero hay suficiente variedad para satisfacer todos los gustos.

En cualquier caso, este artículo trata de como acceder a los libros de la plataforma cuando no contamos con el dispositivo. Hay muchas posibilidades, desde leer en nuestro teléfono inteligente, tableta, computador de escritorio e incluso desde el navegador. Tan sólo hace falta una descarga kindle.

He diseñado una serie de guías, o tutoriales, para tratar de hacerte simple el proceso, el cual es descrito a continuación.

Crea una cuenta en amazon y descarga kindle para tu dispositivo

El proceso que nos permitirá leer libros de la plataforma kindle sin el dispositivo consiste en dos fases: la primera es crear una cuenta en amazon.com configurada para realizar compras con 1-clic y la segunda consiste en descargar una aplicación kindle para el dispositivo (o dispositivos) que desees. Puedes tener tantas aplicaciones como quieras, sólo tendrás que realizar una descarga kindle para cada una.

Crea una cuenta en amazon.com

El primer paso consiste en crear una cuenta en amazon.com. Para descargar libros de la plataforma kindle, es necesario habilitar lo que se denomina “compra con 1-clic”, bien sea que queramos comprar libros o descargar libros gratuitos, los cuales abundan en la plataforma.  He diseñado un tutorial detallado para crees dicha cuenta en amazon.

Descarga una aplicación kindle

Una vez que hayas creado tu cuenta en amazon, o si ya la tenías, y esté configurada para realizar compras con 1-clic, la segunda fase consiste en descargar una aplicación que te permita realizar la lectura de los libros de la plataforma en un dispositivo de tu preferencia. A continuación se muestra como descargar dicha aplicación para cada una de las posibilidades. Elige la que prefieras y encontrarás las instrucciones detalladas para llevar a cabo este proceso. Recuerda que deberás realizar una descarga kindle por cada dispositivo que quieras utilizar.

Descarga kindle para Mac o PC

Aunque no provee las características de movilidad de un teléfono o una tableta, leer en el computador es cómodo por el tamaño de la pantalla. Igual, recuerda que puedes tener la aplicación kindle en varios dispositivos y amazon sincronizará los contenidos entre todos ellos. Descarga kindle para iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod)

Sin duda, iOS se ha convertido en el preferido de la mayoría de los usuarios en los últimos años. La gran integración entre los dispositivos ha cobrado sus frutos. Si dispones de un iPhone, un iPad o un iPod touch, sigue las instrucciones detalladas para descargar la aplicación kindle para iOS y comienza a disfrutar de los muchos libros de la plataforma kindle

In its endless looking to cover more ground -what has been keeping them as the absolute leaders- amazon created a new platform, named Kindle Press, with which them enter the Editorial world.

¿Why would amazon enter the Editorial world?

It’s no secret that amazon control the global book-selling market. In this business, the editorial get a nice cut of the pie. Authors get too little (19%-15%, reason for which I’ve always have bet to Indie publishing).

It is then obvious that amazon being a Publisher, will add another slice to their profits. Being that said, amazon is by far the best way to go for an independent author. Amazon, by becoming a Publisher, puts a new tool on the table to Writers: the possible reach for the books of an author will grow by several magnitude orders, as amazon keeps the biggest readers database in the planet.

How would this work?

Being amazon so clever to doing business, they thought the best platform: select an author, publish a page with its book candidate for publishing, ask their readers to vote for the books they will like to see published. This is an enormous concept test; after the potential book been exposed by 30 days to millions of readers, amazon will have a pretty good idea about what will sell and what not. So, they select the best candidates, and sign an exclusive contract for that book.

Fatal DNA was accepted in the program

As I already said, amazon made me a very good offer: to include Fatal DNA in the program, which is managed through Kindle Scout. An offer that I accepted right away. According to amazon, we, the authors should invite our followers to nominate our books for having a better chance of being published. This is what I’d like to ask you today.

Fernando ha accedido a convertirse en uno de los colaboradores de mi blog, cosa que me llena de orgullo y que estoy seguro que agrega un valor muy importante a este sitio. Sin más preámbulos, dejo que las palabras hablan por si mismas. Acá les dejo su primera contribución.

Raya

Mi teléfono en silencio recibe un par de llamadas, mientras atiendo una reunión de rutina. El buzón de voz anuncia dos mensajes de un número desconocido, y suelta el primero:

– Bendición Fer. Hoy tengo que abandonarla.

Detrás de la voz trémula y asustada está Gabriel. Algo pasó.

Hay oficios para los que uno estudia y se prepara. Otros, se hacen por intuición, o por la inercia de coincidencias y encuentros. Yo sirvo a veces de oído: leo y escucho a la gente, hasta que por sus medios llegan a conclusiones. Y trato de evitarlo, pero a veces se me escapan recomendaciones, con la advertencia de que son sólo opiniones. La mayoría de las veces ayudo, o al menos eso he escogido creer.

Hijo de inmigrantes sin suficiente dinero para un colegio élite, Gabriel soportó años de bullying, refugiándose en los deportes. Le gustan casi todos los que tienen reglas claras, los que tienen rayas, porque donde hay límites claros todos somos iguales. Haciendo deporte no es tan blanco, ni de ojos demasiado claros, o de nariz demasiado extranjera. Él es un optimista con rayas: cuando se propone algo, confía en que Dios le concederá la victoria si es paciente y perseverante. Aun así, decide cuál es la señal que le hará saber que perdió, que debe abandonar porque su meta no fluye, y si aparece ese límite lo respeta. En sus palabras: pone la raya. Sólo tenía tres amores que no conocían raya: su esposa, su hijo Gerardo, y nuestro país. Lleva a Venezuela en la sangre, a su gente y sus paisajes.

Entre sus curiosidades, está pedirme la bendición cuando va a enfrentar o abandonar un reto, cosa bastante inusual si consideramos que no nos une ningún parentesco. Y nunca ha dejado de recibirla. También tiene la costumbre de citar a Cortázar (1) mientras habla.

La primera vez que lo escuché hablamos de su matrimonio, en el que había trabajado duro por cuatro años, negándose a que terminara, alargando un divorcio que era inevitable. Descubrió la raya el día en que supo que su esposa le era infiel, con una mujer. Aunque ella no le pertenecía, trató de recuperarla unos meses luego de la separación, pero ella ya compartía su vida con otro hombre, al que no le importaba lo que pasaba en su cama cuando él no estaba. Quiere pensar que no, pero aún la extraña, se siente cuando cita: “Después de los cuarenta años la verdadera cara la tenemos en la nuca, mirando desesperadamente para atrás”. Él dice que se refiere al país, pero sabe que no es sólo eso.

En los siguientes encuentros, concentraba su energía en el país. Haciendo política en las filas opositoras, pelea con pasión por lo que considera injusto, porque no avance lo que consideraba un socialismo de mentira. Se niega a que la gente se pierda en el discurso, y deje de luchar.

Aunque él sigue peleando, intuye que está perdiendo. Si baja la guardia, le escuchas decir: “Sólo en sueños, en la poesía o en el juego, nos asomamos a lo que fuimos antes de ser esto, que vaya a saber si somos”, o “A mí me parece que los peces ya no quieren salir de la pecera, casi nunca tocan el vidrio con la nariz”. Convencido de que no hay negociación posible, incluye: “Cada vez sospecho más que estar de acuerdo es la peor de las ilusiones”.

El buzón de voz guarda el primer mensaje, y suelta el segundo:

– Fer, Gabriel de nuevo. De camino al colegio, paré a comprar los cachitos que le gustan a Gerardo. Ella le puso un arma en su cabeza mientras me quitaba el celular. Hoy encontré la raya. Estoy en el aeropuerto, compré el primer vuelo que encontré y te llamo desde la sala de espera. Venezuela ya no me quiere, ya no me pertenece… “Andábamos sin buscarnos pero sabiendo que andábamos para encontrarnos”.

No sé a dónde fue. No sé si llamará de nuevo. Supongo que si nos quitan dos de tres, nos aferramos como podemos al que queda, aunque nuestra razón pueda sugerir que ninguno fue nunca realmente nuestro. Y viviremos con miedo a la raya, a eso que nos abre los ojos, porque cada vez que se cruza, perdemos.

Leer en Buenos Aires

Si Buenos Aires está entre sus escogencias de viaje, no lo piense más. En esta ciudad se combinan perfectamente edificaciones antiguas, muy bien conservadas, con zonas pujantes para el comercio y el turismo. Una provincia con más de 15 millones de habitantes que no defrauda al visitante. Hay actividades para todos los gustos. El ambiente europeo, pleno de cafés, teatros y vida nocturna presta su magia al turista que disfruta y comparte con el habitante que camina apurado a sus obligaciones. Buenos Aires, la ciudad de Borges, de Gardel, también lo es de los grandes del rock, como el recién fallecido Gustavo Cerati.

Por supuesto que para los lectores también es un paraíso. Posee, según un estudio del periódico inglés The Guardian la segunda librería más bella del mundo y la más grande de Latinoamérica: el Ateneo Gran Splendid ubicado en la Av. Santa Fe, esquina Callao. Lo interesante es que el Cine Teatro Gran Splendid fue diseñado en 1.919 por los famosos arquitectos Peró y López Armengol, y convertido en librería 81 años después. Conserva la majestuosidad de la época. Los palcos funcionan como salas de lecturas, con música ambiente de fondo, es difícil que el afortunado que consiga un asiento quiera dejarlo. En el lugar del escenario, funciona un acogedor café, desde donde se observa la cúpula pintada en 1919, en homenaje al fin de la Primera Guerra Mundial. El local posee unos 2,000 metros cuadrados, divididos en cuatro pisos, con unos 12,000 libros para la venta.

Si seguimos con las librerías, en pleno Palermo se encuentra Crackup, un espacio que reúne tienda, café y un sector para eventos. Aunque no es antigua, posee textos de gran valor a precios accesibles. Clásica y Moderna es otro lugar que no pueden dejar de conocer. Fue declarada Sitio de Interés Cultural por la Legislatura de la ciudad. Fundada en 1.938, hoy en día se mezclan libros, café, espectáculos musicales y una refinada gastronomía.

Si ya compró suficientes libros y quiere sentarse a leerlos, visite la Plaza de Lectura de la Biblioteca Nacional. Es un hermoso parque con vista a la biblioteca, donde se concentran personas de todas las edades, felices, relajadas, olvidando por un rato el caos de la ciudad.

Un buen lector, que viaje a Buenos Aires, seguro deseará conocer los lugares preferidos de Jorge Luis Borges. Nació en Buenos Aires en 1899 y sus huellas están en varios puntos de la ciudad. En el mapa de la web de Turismo de la ciudad, se señalan los sitios emblemáticos; por una parte los que aparecen en sus escritos y por otro, sitios relacionados con su biografía, como la casa de su abuela en la calle Serrano, ahora llamada calle Jorge Luis Borges, también su casa natal, la última librería que visitó y la primera editorial que publicó Inquisiciones.

Si puede tomarse el tiempo de salir de la ciudad, hay posadas especializadas en satisfacer los gustos de los lectores. En el distrito de Tigre, muy cerca de Buenos Aires se ubica Los Caprichos del Tigre, una Casa de Lectura con más de 2,000 libros, y que, además, ofrece paseos navegables por el Delta del Tigre. En la selva del norte argentino, a orillas del rio Paraná, las lecturas comprenden arte, literatura argentina y latinoamericana, en la Posada Puerto Bemberg son alrededor de 2,500 libros a disposición de los huéspedes. Hay muchos lugares maravillosos como estos apenas reseñados. Es una forma que tiene Argentina de honrar a Borges, pues su legado está en todo el país, dándole a la lectura en el lugar que le corresponde.

So we can read them on any computer desktop, smartphone, tablet and even in your browser. Download and install the appropriate application in a simple process. Once we get the kindle app on multiple devices, we can read in any of them and amazon handles the synchronization of content. For example, we can start by reading a book on your phone and then continue on amazon tablet or PC and keep record of the page where you were.

This tutorial is part of a series which explains how to download the kindle app for various devices. Here we show how to download the kindle app for your PC or Mac. In general the process is very similar for either, except for differences imposed by each of the two platforms. I will illustrate how to do it from a Mac, but also to do so from a PC doesn’t have many differences. Once you see the tutorial, you’ll be able to complete the process for any of the two platforms without inconvenience.

How to download the kindle app

There are several ways to access the download of the application, some more direct than others. I will illustrate here the most generic, which will help you get the application to any device, although the focus of this article is about desktops. To illustrate it this way, you can access new applications amazon could create for new devices in the future.

1 Go to google.com using the browser of your choice, type “free Kindle reading apps” in the search box. Google will return the results, where you will find the entry entitled “Free Kindle reading apps – Amazon.com” as shown in the following picture and click on it.

2 Choose your device. I chose this method to reach the download site for the kindle app as here you can see any means or device from which you can read the books in the kindle platform. You may notice the wide range of devices for which a kindle app is available. Since the goal of this tutorial is to download the application to read books from the kindle platform in a desktop, either a PC or Mac, you will select the link called “Kindle for Mac”, which is highlighted in the picture. If your computer is a PC, you must choose “Kindle for PC“, but if you follow these steps you will see that both processes are very similar.

3 Access the download link. By selecting the link we will be directed to a page for the support for the kindle app for Mac. Here we choose the link that says “Download and install the latest version of Kindle for Mac“, as illustrated in the following picture (in the case of PC there’s an almost identical window, where you should select the first link too).

After selecting this link, we come to a screen asking us to go to “Kindle for Mac” to access the download. Select this link, as shown in the picture (in the case of PC, we reach to an almost identical screen, where we make the same selection, replacing Mac for PC).

By selecting the “Kindle for Mac” link, we will come to a page that will take us the Mac App Store, which is from where we will download. As I said before, this path is a little longer, but it serves to illustrate the process from where we can download the kindle app for any device. For the PC, the download is more direct, but the principle is the same. The link to be clicked is shown in the picture below.

After selecting the link, the App Store window with the kindle app for Mac will open. Below the kindle icon, a blue button that says “Free” will appear as the application is free. Clicking on that button turns it green, and its label changes to “Install App” where we must click to download the kindle app to your Mac, which is illustrated in the following picture.

  4 Go to the Mac applications store (Mac App Store).  When you select the option to install the application, the store will ask you to enter your credentials, which you must have as they are required to upgrade almost anything on Mac, but if not, there is a button in the lower left portion which allows us to sign up in the store. Once we enter our Apple ID and password, we click the button labeled “Sign In“, as shown in the accompanying picture.

The download will start immediately, which we note as the button label changes to “Install App” to “Installing”. Once the download is complete, it will change to “Installed”, which ends the process of installing the application. In case you are installing the PC application, once the download is complete, you must install it, just like any other Windows application.

5 Register your kindle. With the application installed, the last step is to associate the application to our account on amazon.com so they can sync books you download. To do this, locate and run the application you just downloaded (search for kindle in the Finder or, if you’re on a PC, in the application search box). When you run, being the first time, the application will ask you to identify, as shown in the following picture.

Here, you must enter the details of your account on amazon, starting with the email you used to create your account at amazon (in the field labeled “Amazon account e-mail address“) and the password associated with it in the field “Amazon account password“. Once this data is entered, click on the button labeled “Register” and the application will be associated with your account.

6 Enjoy your kindle. Once the application is registered, it’s ready for you to begin reading the books you download. The following picture shows a screenshot of it, where you can notice that it has been associated with the account and where three books that amazon has downloaded for you are. You can download all you want, in the language of your choice and download apps for other devices (phone, tablet, etc.) and enjoy all the books in any of them.

By clicking on any of the books found there, it will open for you to start reading it. In the following picture, one ready for you to interact with is shown, which serve to familiarize yourself with the application.

In the amazon.com website, you can choose, within the link “Your account“, the “Manage Content and Devices“, within which you can see how far the application is associated with your account, and from where you can manage it in the future.

How to create your account at amazon

The procedure described here works for amazon local shops (Spain, UK, etc.) and once created; your account can be used in any subsidiary. However, not all products are available in all stores, which is why I will illustrate the process through the matrix store, amazon.com. The objective of this tutorial is to create an account on amazon, but the instructions for adding a secure method of payment to your account as well as the configuration of the buying process via 1-Click are also included (which is essential to acquire books from the kindle platform, whether paid or free).

Create your account on amazon.com

1 Go to amazon.com using the browser of your choice, type “amazon.com” in the address bar, which will take you to the main page of amazon. The top of the page is displayed in the picture below.   [divider]2 Sign up as a new customer. To do this, hover your mouse over the region where it says “Hello, Sign in Your account” which will display the menu shown in the picture. Below the yellow button labeled Sign in, it reads “New customer? Start here. You have to click on “Start here“. [divider]

1-Click Settings

Amazon.com, through the many years being the absolute leader of online shopping, has developed methods that make shopping even more enjoyable in its store (perhaps the primary reason for its leadership). Among these improvements, is what is called “Buy Now with 1-click” of associating a means of payment and a preferred default address in the user’s account; when he wishes to make a purchase, you can do so by clicking the button designed for that purpose, instead of adding the product to cart and then go through the checkout process, indicating the payment method, shipping address and the method associated with it.

To shop for books on kindle, amazon.com has adopted this method as the only one that can make the purchase. This means you cannot add a book for kindle to the cart, they should always be purchased with the 1-click technology. Since the purpose of this tutorial is to purchase books on kindle, and when I say purchase I mean both paid and free books, which are many, we’re going to understand how to setup the 1-click payment.

1 Log into your account. As we did in step 2 of the previous section, with the registered user and within amazon.com, you have to proceed to hover the pointer over the text Hello, [your username] Your Account, which will display a menu. In it, you must select Your Account, which will take you to a screen similar to the one shown in the picture. Once there, you need to click the option 1-Click Settings, located inside the box called Settings (it is the third top-down). [divider] 2 Select Add Address. Once you’ve clicked on 1-Click Settings, a page where you can select the address where you want the products purchased via 1-click to be sent will be charged. For purchases of electronic books or eBooks or any other goods or digital service, this address will not be used, however it is a requirement to purchase. You should click on the Enter a new address button, allowing you to enter the address. There are two buttons with the same label, it doesn’t matter which one you choose. The following picture shows the page where you will make the selection. [divider]

By completing this step, you have access to free books for kindle found on amazon.com, which vary from day to day. There are many good books. If you want to purchase paid books, complete the following section, which is the last of this tutorial.

Select a payment method

As part of the benefits mentioned above, amazon.com presents a number of options to pay for our purchases. Among them are the Gift Card, which can be purchased at the same amazon store and apply to our account (or received as a gift). We also pay with our bank account (allowed for almost all US banks) or with a credit card or debit card.

The idea is to store the data of our credit or debit card into our account on amazon, because in this way, each time we make a purchase is not necessary to enter the data all over again. Once you click on Edit, select the card you just entered and you are ready to buy books for kindle.

Hablar con Joaquín -a quien admiro mucho- siempre es interesante. Cuando estamos al aire, el tiempo vuela y siempre falta tiempo para debatir acerca de tantos y tan interesantes temas, sin embargo, en esta entrevista ADN Fatal perdió un poco de protagonismo a favor de otros derroteros.

¿Quién dijo miedo?

Siendo mi primera novela publicada, ADN Fatal me sigue dando satisfacciones. Llevarla a formato electrónico -en la plataforma kindle- fue un gran reto, además de ser el leit motiv de este sitio web. Como he mencionado anteriormente, yo era el primer reacio a dar el brinco del papel a lo digital, hasta que caí seducido por el libro electrónico luego de adquirir un kindle -lo cual hice, en principio para lectura técnica- y me percaté de que el formato era el futuro de la literatura, por lo que decidí abrazar esta tecnología sin mirar atrás.

Los beneficios del libro electrónico son muchos, siendo destacable el que puedas leer en cualquier sitio, en cualquier dispositivo (al menos los que adopten kindle como plataforma) así como el hecho de que tienes acceso inmediato a textos sin la barrera de la distribución. Quizás lo más importante es que brinda la oportunidad a muchos de lanzar al ruedo de los autores de forma independiente -impensable hace una década- lo cual contribuye a enriquecer el mundo literario de una manera que, a mi parecer, iguala o supera a la invención de la imprenta.

La cultura del milenio

No había tenido la oportunidad de leer el más reciente texto de Joaquín Ortega, de nombre La cultura del milenio. Durante la entrevista Joaquín, amablemente me proporcionó un ejemplar, del cual he leído -en mi poco tiempo libre- aproximadamente la mitad, y el cual, sin lugar a dudas, puedo calificar de brillante antes de culminarlo.

Joaquín es un hombre preclaro, con una profunda cultura y un conocimiento de la política, el mercadeo y las tendencias sociales que impresionan a cualquiera. El libro, una recopilación de artículos que giran alrededor del efecto de lo digital en nuestras vidas, nos pasea por un conjunto de cosas que realmente te dejan pensando.

En los próximos días escribiré una reseña completa, pero puedo adelantarles que se trata de una obra brillante, que quienes estén interesados en comprender hacia donde nos dirigimos como sociedad, sin duda, disfrutarán. ¡Bravo, Joaquín! Y de nuevo mil gracias.

Sinopsis de A Un paso del infinito

Un hombre prehistórico es sacado del planeta Tierra, con la misión de evolucionar metafísica e intelectualmente para ser el líder de una misión suicida y salvar así el Universo, a un paso del infinito. Hace milenios una nave espacial secuestra un hombre prehistorico de la Tierra, y lo transporta, luego de evolucionarlo en físico e inteligencia, hacia un mundo llamado Tornelia, allí deberá pasar una prueba para conocer si es el elegido en llevar hasta el infinito una sustancia que esta a punto de originar un nuevo universo. Para ello tendrá que armar un artefacto que le permita desplazarse por el tiempo y el espacio. Las partes de ese artefacto estan distribuidas en 7 planetas de 7 galaxias distintas. Dos razas sabias del Universo se enfrentan por la sustancia y el hombre en medio deberá luchar por hacer lo justo. Un Maestro Guia de mucha edad, una soldado aguerrida y la misma nave seran sus companeros de aventuras. Esta es la primera historia de una serie de tres que narra las aventuras de Org de Bonn, el hombre de la Tierra que intentara salvar el Universo.

Análisis de A un paso del infinito

Escribir ciencia-ficción no es tarea fácil. En mi opinión, la base para tener éxito en el área descansa en poder crear un mundo bien diferente al que conocemos y para lograrlo, es necesario establecer muchos elementos que naturalmente hagan creíble este nuevo mundo adonde nos transporta el autor.

Y este primer requisito fue cumplido a cabalidad por A un paso del infinito. No sólo los personajes, perfectamente definidos y manejados magistralmente por León –entre los cuales conseguimos a Orgg de Bonn, el ser primitivo que es arrancado de su planeta para ser evolucionado tanto física como mentalmente y al cual le será asignada una misión de vida o muerte para el Universo; el maestro Badusán, una especie de Yoda evolucionado, y la soldado Liya Min, y muchos otros que no quiero nombrar para no arruinar la lectura– se encargan de transportarnos a un mundo fantástico, sino que el autor define los parámetros de una raza super evolucionada, hilando hasta los más finos detalles, redefiniendo incluso las medidas de tiempo y espacio en una forma que al avanzar en la lectura, rápidamente el lector es transportado y comienza a pensar en términos de soldias, decisoldias, specmes y secks  y vive de forma activa la odisea por la obtención del Petamikolaris.
