Tributes to Dr.Sukumar Azhikode

Dr.Sukumar Azhikode, the noted writer, speaker, critic and cultural leader died today at the Amala Cancer Institute, Thrissur. He was 85. For few weeks, he was under treatment for cancer at the Amala Cancer Hospital and yesterday his conditions suddenly deteriorated leading to the demise.

Major Archbishop Mar George Alancherry Cardinal Designate

Mar George Alancherry Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Sabha (Church) has been designated as the new Indian Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI. It is a pleasant news to the Indian christian community especially for the Roman Catholics.

The announcement was made simultaneously at Vatican and at Kakkanad St Thomas Mount.

Alencherry was born on April 19, 1945, in Thuruthy, a nearby village of Changanacherry Town, was ordained as a priest on 19 November 1972. He studied at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Seminary of St Joseph in Alwaye and earned a doctorate at the Institut Catholique de Paris, where he specialised in catechesis.

Rev Alencherry was ordained a Bishop on May 29 last year following the passing away of Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil.
We, the Indians along with the Kerala Christian community congratulate Mar George Alancherry and say thanks to the god's gift.

At last, the Kerala Engineering Rank List for admission to the various engineering colleges published yesterday. More than One hundred thousand of candidates had been appeared for the examination. Out of that 57,000 were qualified for getting inside the rank list.

This year onwards, the Plus2 marks were also included to decide the rank list. It was a justifyable decision, otherwise, the hard earned +2 marks wouldn't have any importance, so far. But the implementation of including the +2 marks faced many problems. That was the main reason for the delay of the result.

Any way the authorities managed to publish the engineering rank list to quench the thirst of the engineering aspirants.

Condolences to the Bereaved

Few days back, there had news regarding the fire accident in 'Batha' market area at Riyad city. It shocked me, because, there had been a lot of friends of mine. My memories went back 12 years. I was working in the Riyadh Water Authority. I worked there about 12 and half years in Riyadh's out-skirt, Salbhukh. Salbhukh is a small village about 65 kilometers north of Riyadh.

Every week end holiday, me and my fellow workers used to go to Riyadh to market things of daily use. That day we get together with friends those who were working in other plants and chit chatted.

Me and my friends worked many years there. In my case, it was 12 and half years. I earned my lively hood for me and my family from that country for years.

Still hundreds of thousands of people work and earn money from those countries. When I struck the news of fire accident, naturally remembered all those days.

I hereby submit my condolences to the people who lost their life in the accident and their bereaved family.

Now it is the brisk time in colleges of Kerala to enroll the first year degree students for the year 2011.As the engineering admissions are delayed because of the new criteria of the selection method introduced from this year onwards, naturally student aspirants will create a rush to the degree colleges. The admission process in various degree colleges are are progressing in a systematic way.

It is admirable the process of admissions in the colleges purely on the basis of merit. It is a tedious job to prepare the merit list. But all these activities completed and the candidates got the information cards to attend the selection interviews. But most of the colleges in Trichur District, that is, my district, issued the interview-cards for the same day and almost the same time.I am surprised how the student candidates will appear for the selection interview at the same time at different places.Do the authorities are aware about the difficulties arising from this situation?

Candidates having better marks may be side tracked and those who are having less marks may get admissions. It is really a pathetic situation.There should be at least one day gap in between the selection interviews.The authorities can do that.It will facilitate more candidates to attend the interview.Then only it could be considered as 'justifiable'.

Yesterday when people were commemmorating "Vishu", a sad incident was occured. It was the sad demise of Nandana, daughter of playback singer Chithra.

The eight year old baby drowned in a swimming pool. Chithra along with the baby and husband was due to attend a musical function conducted by the veteran music director A.R.Rahman at a gulf country.
