Painted Plein Aire

These trees are amazing. They twist & twine, giving them these stress points.

I think I'll paint at Oak Park for awhile.

So while I was painting an unfortunate homeless guy that lives in the park came up to me.

I was a bit annoyed at 1st, but I'd be annoyed if anyone intruded on my painting space.

He turned out to be very pleasant and like the contrast of the foreground. He also was a fellow Veteran.

This painting will be NFS.

I see it in a different light. This light was a light marine layer.

Yes Virginia, there is color in gray.

I’m not saying that I knew him personally. But his life’s work and passion had a profound impact on my life. Credit for that also has to go to Steve Wozniac & Guy Kawasaki. Credit also should go to John Warnock founder of Abobe and postscript, and Paul Brainerd who wrote the code for Pagemaker.

My history starts before Apple, in the 70’s, I was a production artist for ad agencies. We used toxic chemicals to ply our trade and sent our work off to printers that also had to use toxic chemicals to bring printed materials to the public. Materials like Newspapers, brochures, Junk mail, etc.......

My career change in 1986, I saw a demonstration of the Macintosh & Pagemaker along with Postscript at the Jacoc Javitts center in NYC. I discovered the digital world that could eliminating toxic waste. I quit my job, bought a Macintosh system & started my own successful design studio.

Later I became an Apple consultant and taught many print companies along with in-house corporate design studios how to convert to the new digital way using less toxic chemicals.

This can be called the butterfly effect. One idea creating many ideas.

July's 1st Thursday was a busy evening for me. I was invited to paint in the Plein Aire Santa Barbara Quickdraw. Around 20 of us met at the plaza and spread out all over town. We painted from 4pm to 6PM and then met back at the plaza to put our paintings up for a silent auction. There was a great turn out. Thanks to Chris Potter & his crew.

I also had 3 paintings juried into SCAPE's (Southern California Artists Painting for the Environment) Show at the Faulkner Gallery to benefit Los Padres Forest Watch .

The top 3 are mine.

I got an expresso pot set up & ready to paint. I'll post it when done.

A Rock

I was at the marina today wanting to paint plein air with my new acrylic setup, but as always the marina is too stimulating with so much to paint.

I laid against this rock in the parking lot trying to figure what next. Then I realized what a beautiful rock it was. So I photographed it & painted it in the studio. I used the limited acrylic palette that is in my plein air box. I'll conquer the marine soon, little by little. You can see what the marina is like from these photos The Marina in Santa Barbara

Wednesday, one of my sons' cat was hit by a car. We found Shim Sham laying in my studio. Shim Sham the cat was in bad shape.
My sons got him to a Vet 1st thing Thursday for X-rays to find his hip was shattered. We had a choice of amputation, surgery or to be euthanized.
My sons chose surgery but it's very expensive.
To help them pay for it I have put some small paintings up for sale at reduced prices. These paintings make great Christmas presents or just something you may want to hang on your own wall.

I honestly have to say I enjoyed today. I had originally decided to to take my gear and paint at the beach today, after all it's 70° outside. Then I realized how crowded the beach will be. I changed my mind and painted in the back garden from a photo, the air was fresh so I guess it's plein air painting.

Last night's 1st Thursday and the Art Crawl was the best ever. Art is so alive in this town and I thank all those that make it possible and have promoted it.

There were pianos on State St. with musicians playing on donated pianos that were decorated by our local artists, Thank you all. There were many venues for artists to show their work, the town was alive on a beautiful Thursday night.

I spoke with some wonderful people about art in Santa Barbara and I learned a lot.

The Art Crawl brought so many artists & art lovers together that I can see it lasting forever (seeing if not wishing).

There's many pleasure boats in the Santa Barbara marina. There is also a large fleet of fishing boats bringing in shrimp, squid, tuna, crabs and many other species of fresh seafood.

I woke early one morning and grabbed my gear to head down to the beach. When I got there it was all foggy, felt all frustrated, not being a morning person. As I stood there staring at the haze I realized what a challenge it would be to paint the soft colors and lost edges.

Chase Palm Park in Santa Barbara is so magical. The light shining on the palm fronds immediately catch your eye. The mountains behind are a soft glow of reds, brown and green. I stood with my back to the ocean and painted.
