As many already know, working with the mainframe is always a joy, and this recent endeavor was no exception.

The Problem

When attempting to access the mainframe via FTP in the code of a web application I came across this error:

"The remote server returned an error: (501) Syntax error in parameters or arguments."

There is not much to creating a FTP connection in C# so it was quite annoying to have to debug this mainframe related. The underlying error cleared up a lot thought. The error read:

"501 Character (/) not allowed in object name."

The Solution

The solution turned out to be quite a simple. The URI just needed to be adjusted by replacing all forward slashes with '/%2F'. Here is an example:

FtpWebRequest myFtpWebRequest = (FtpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(new Uri("ftp://" + ftpHostname + "/%2F'" + ftpFilename + "'"));

Always interesting to see how something so simple can cause you so much grief.

New wordpress ticket and patch submitted

I finally got around to submitting a ticket (#6664) for that bug I found in the latest version of Wordpress. You can read more about the bug here.
It is nice, they use Trac software for their system. I used to use it at a former company I worked for and it is great. It has to do with how wordpress sets CSS classes for highlighting navigation menus. the problem arises when you have set a specific page as the 'posts page' for the site. When you are on a post the expected result would be for the 'current_page_parent' class to be set in the menu for the page you specified as the 'posts page' in for the site. This is not the result you get with the release 2.5 version of wordpress. After a little digging I found the following fixes the issue:

Add these lines to wp-includes/classes.php after line 562:

elseif ($page->ID == get_settings(’page_for_posts’))
$css_class .= ‘ current_page_parent’;

I am planning on submitting this bug along with a patch to WordPress Trac soon but until then enjoy the fix.

You can read more about the related issue in an older version of Wordpress here:
Previously I was having problems with losing my wireless network connection when my laptop came up from a suspended state. Basically you just have to create the following three scripts then your wireless should reconnect properly.

Create /etc/acpi/suspend.d/07-network-manager.sh

#!/bin/sh /etc/dbus-1/event.d/25NetworkManager stop

Create /etc/acpi/resume.d/63-network-manager.sh

#!/bin/sh /etc/dbus-1/event.d/25NetworkManager start

Create /etc/acpi/resume.d/99-fixwifi.sh

#!/bin/sh
  #stop everything using the ipw2200 module /etc/init.d/networking stop /etc/acpi/suspend.d/07-network-manager.sh  #remove the module modprobe -r -f ipw2200  #add it back modprobe ipw2200  #start everything back up /etc/init.d/networking start /etc/acpi/resume.d/63-network-manager.sh

Make the scripts executable with the following commands

sudo chmod +x /etc/acpi/suspend.d/07-network-manager.sh sudo chmod +x /etc/acpi/resume.d/63-network-manager.sh sudo chmod +x /etc/acpi/resume.d/99-fixwifi.sh
Resources:
On Windows my wife and I used Picasa for handling the management of our photos. I felt it worked well and was easy enough for my wife to use as well which was a plus. Since Google also has a Linux version available I thought it would be a no brainer to continue using Picasa. Unfortunately, Google decided not to implement a native version of the application and created a post that uses a custom wine instance. I would be fine with that if the port actually had the same functionality as the windows version of the software and actually ran efficiently. But that is not the case. The Linux version is missing functionality (like backups) and also for me runs very slow and buggy. It crashes often and at times does some weird things with the cursor. The speed issue is just not acceptable for me and the other bugs make Laura's experience with the application unbearable.

Since most tasks on a computer have many software solutions I thought I would give a few a try. After some initial testing I thought I would give f-spot a try. I thought it was very responsive and thought the tagging might prove worthwhile. The problem I ran into was some of the functionality (mainly the ability to merge RAW and Jpeg images from my camera into one image in the application database) was no working correctly on the latest version available to me in the main Ubuntu apt repositories. After some digging and testing I found that the latest SVN version of the application functioned correctly including the missing functionality. Yet another bonus of the open source community, I had questions and could easily find answers. And unlike closed source application where I would have to wait for an update who's release pended on the whim of a faceless company I could actually get the fix immediately.

So I was able to compile the latest SVN version of the application but I wanted to install it system wide and integrate it with my current apt installs so my system could still keep the application version up to date. The solution was to figure out a way to create a Debian package of the latest SVN compiled version so that I could install it via apt. After some trial and error here are the steps I found to make that happen:

Follow the instruction here to download the latest version of f-spot from SVN (Stop at the Build section)

Make sure f-spot is already installed (Ubuntu installs it by default)

From terminal in the trunk directory, run
./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr --disable-scrollkeeper

Run
make all

Run
sudo checkinstall -D

When prompted, set the version (I used '0.4.1-svn3457')

Then set the name (use 'f-spot')

This should create and install a Debian package of the compiled version of the latest SVN code. On a test instance of Ubuntu I did have an issue with the dbus session not being launched. I ended up having to launch the application by running the following command: dbus-launch f-spot. I was informed by the f-spot mailing list that this is an issue with gnome and not the f-spot application. I did not have any issues when I installed on my main system though.I hope this helps out with people in a similar situation. I ended up finding out that f-spot was created in C# which is one of the primary languages I code in professionally so I might try my hand and helping out with the f-spot project. I will be sure and let you know how that turns out.

Hide mounted partition icons from the Desktop in Ubuntu 7.10

I was meddling around the Internet the other day and notice this article on lifehacker that sparked my interest. With my recent switch to Ubuntu 7.10 at home, I have been spending some time getting used to the new Linux environment and ironing out the kinks. On my list of slight annoyances was the fact that my windows partition (yes, I am dual booting at the moment until everything has been tested) was being automatically mounted and an icon to that partition was being displayed on the desktop. I am one of those people who likes to keep my desktop clear of clutter so of course I wanted this icon removed. The problem was that I could not get it to disappear. The article mentioned hiding all icons for mounted media on the desktop which is nice for some but I enjoy having them pop up when I install a CD or plug in my USB flash drive. So to solve this problem, and just remove a single icon for the windows partition, I have found the following solution:

Open a Terminal (press Alt+F2, then type gnome-terminal and hit enter)

Make a new mount point, type sudo mkdir /mnt/sda1 (or change the path to wherever you would like to mount the partition)

Open fstab, type sudo gedit /etc/fstab

Edit the mount point of the partition, my my case it was the line for my windows partition sda1. I changed /media/sda1 to /mnt/sda1 (the path of the mount point you created)

Save fstab

Restart your computer

Now your partition should be mounted and accessible but not showing up as an icon on your desktop. In addition, when you mount other media it should mount automatically and appear as an icon on your desktop. Please let me know if you have found another way of doing this.

S-video (TV out) with Ubuntu 7.10 on Dell XPS M140 Laptop

The transition to Ubuntu 7.10 on out home laptop has been pretty painless so far. I have been impressed with how easy it has been. I also have been happy to know that I did not need to manual edit a configuration file yet. That is a huge step up for previous Linux distributions I have tried in the past. It just works, and that is a good thing. The only issue I have had with Ubuntu and our laptop is getting the s-video (TV output) to work. Thankfully I found an easy solution which is to use the xrandr command. There are lots of options for getting the video outputs setup on a laptop but I went with these two commands:

Turn S-video on and clone the LCD and TV output displays at 800x600

xrandr --output LVDS --mode 800x600 --output TV --mode 800x600

Reset LCD monitor to normal viewing

xrandr --auto

I setup a couple launcher links on my menu so I can easily switch between the two. So now all I do is plug in the s-video cable. Click the first link to switch to a cloned display on both (LCD and TV) outputs. Then when I'm finished unplug the s-video cable and click the second link to go back to the normal LCD display and resolution. I had to setup the cloned display command to have an 800x600 resolution so movies in full screen would display properly on my TV. It is pretty straight-forward but I would be happy to post a more detailed step-by-step if people are interested.

Run Gparted Live from a USB Flash Drive

Here are some instructions for setting up a USB flash drive to run Gparted Live from a computer running Windows XP. I thought the instructions that I found on the web were a little hard to follow since they generally were geared towards users setting up a USB flash drive from a computer running Linux. I also just like compiling helpful tips on my site for easy access for me in the future. Enjoy.

Download the latest Gparted Live CD ISO file from here.

Download the latest syslinux.exe file from here. The executable file can be found in the win32 directory of the zip archive.

Mount the ISO with your favorite virtual drive software. I use Daemon Tools which can be found here.

Copy the following files to the root of your USB flash drive:

gparted.dat
boot/gparted
boot/gparted.igz
syslinux/boot.img
syslinux/options.msg
syslinux/slash.lss
syslinux/syslinux.cfg

Open a command prompt and run syslinux.exe -ma X: (where X: is the drive letter of the USB flash drive).

Verify that the system file ldlinux.sys was created at the root of the USB flash drive (You may need to change the Windows Explorer view options to show 'hidden files and folers' and 'protected operating system files' in order to see the file).

Now your USB Flash Drive should be ready to boot from and run Gparted Live

This is a combination of instructions I found while searching on the Internet. I thought it might be helpful and I wanted to make a note of it on my site for reference.
Initially I tried the instructions for fixing Ubuntu found below but if you install all updates to the base installation the kernel will be upgraded to 2.6.20-16 which will lose the patch specified in the instructions. So here are a combined set of instructions for getting everything running correctly:

Insert Ubuntu 7.04 Desktop CD and boot system

Select 'Start Ubuntu in safe graphics mode'

Press Alt+F1

Tab to Places->Desktop

Tab to 'Install' icon and hit enter

Run through the installation and install Ubuntu on the system (Note Alt+F is Forward)

Reboot system

Press Control+Alt+F1

Login to the system

run sudo vi /boot/grub/menu.lst

Add 'i8042.noloop' (without the quotes) to the end of the #kopt line. You might also have to add it to the end of the entry for the 2.6.20-16 kernel (kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20.16-generic root=...) if you have already upgraded the system.

run sudo reboot

I decided to look into making the Eclipse IDE portable for my PHP and JAVA development needs. After trying out a few suggestions on the web I found a solution that works. I thought I'd make a note of it here for myself and for others to enjoy.

Download Eclipse and extract it to your USB flash drive

Install a JDK on your computer (Default install is C:\Programs Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_xx)

Create a folder jdks in your eclipse folder on your flash drive (ex: X:/eclipse/jdks)

Copy the jdk folder on your computer to the jdks folder on your flash drive. (ex: X:\eclipse\jdks\jdk1.6.0_xx)

Edit the eclipse.ini file (ex: X:\eclipse\eclipse.ini) to look like this:

-vm
.\jdks\jdk1.6.0_xx\bin\javaw
-vmargs
-Xms40m
-Xmx256m

(replace "jdk1.6.0_xx" with the actual folder name of the copied JDK)

Run eclipse.exe from your flash drive

When asked for a workspace location, you can enter '.\workspace', which will create a workspace in your eclipse folder (ex: X:\eclipse\workspace\)

You're Done!

Move a window when its title bar is off the screen

Hold down Alt + Spacebar

Press the M key

Use the arrow keys to relocate the window

Press the Enter key when you have the Window in the desired location.

After a little debug work I determined that my host PARCOM was not allowing the PHP mail function to send the email. After some searching around I found this Basic Information for PHP Authentication knowledge base article which had the solution to my problem.
I was able to solve my 'not sending mail' issue with adding the following lines to the top of wp-gbcf_form.php:

ini_set("SMTP","mail.yourdomain.com");
ini_set("smtp_port","25");
ini_set("sendmail_from","fromYou@typeyourdomainhere.com");

After that it worked like a charm. I just wanted to thank Mike again for is hard work on this plugin and I now you can contact me whenever you like.

phpFlickr Patch

During the process of revamping my SimpleFlickr plugin I came across an interesting issues with using the phpFlickr wrapper library. For those of you who do not know the phpFlickr library is this great wrapper for the flickr API in PHP written by Dan Coulter. I have come across an issue dealing with multiple instances of phpflickr (and the accompanying libraries) not being able to load due to multiple wordpress plugins using phpflickr on the same site. I have found a solution which involves a some small tweaks to the phpflickr code. I'm not sure if it is the most elegant php solution but basically any place where you do a require_once call I have added a check to see if the given class that is to be loaded already exists.

Here is an example:

original code:

require_once 'PEAR.php';

new code:

if(!class_exists("PEAR")) require_once 'PEAR.php';

I just wanted to thank Dan again for his great work on phpFlickr and I hope this fix spares some other developer some time and sanity.

SimpleFlickr Wordpress Plugin

This is a plugin for Wordpress that allows you to embed a flickr integrated simpleviewer into your Wordpress site. In additional, you are able to specific a path to a standard SimpleViewer XML configuration file to display images from a local gallery.

Like this plugin?

Download

Please visit the SimpleFlickr Plugin Page to download the latest version of the plugin.

Upgrading

The easiest way to upgrade from previous versions is to deactivate the plugin in wordpress and delete the plugin folder from your web server. Once the new plugin files have been uploaded and you have activated the plugin in wordpress then you have authorized the new plugin with flickr before you can use the plugin. It is also suggested to update your options to resave the values in the database to make sure you have all the latest option values saved.

Installation

Extract all the contents of the plugin archive into your 'wp-content/plugins/simpleFlickr' directory.

Go to your wordpress admin pages and click on 'Plugins' and activate the plugin called 'simpleFlickr'.

Go to your wordpress admin and click on 'Options' then 'simpleFlickr'.

Following the instructions to authorize the plugin with flickr. (You only do this once initially.)

Set your configuration option values and click 'update options' to save.

Add simpleflickr tag to your page or post with the set or group attribute defined. (Please see Usage section for more details.)

Usage

After the plugin has been installed, activated, and the configuration options have been set you will be able to add a simpleviewer object to your content by adding a simpleflickr tag to your page or post. Please see the examples below for tag details.

Here is an example to show a set:

[simpleflickr set="72157594408754918" /]

Here is an example to show a group:

[simpleflickr group="47755705@N00" /]

Here is an example to show user's recent photos:

[simpleflickr showrecent="true" /]

Here is an example with all custom options:

[simpleflickr width="100%" height="800" bgcolor="#FFFFFF" quality="best"
navposition="bottom" title="Testing Demo" set="YOUR_SET_NUMBER" maximagewidth="500"
maximageheight="300" textcolor="0x333333" framecolor="0xD5E6EB"framewidth="10"
stagepadding="40" thumbnailcolumns="3" thumbnailrows="3"enablerightclickopen="false" /]

The following are the attributes available for the tag:

Flickr Options

The following options are related to how the plugin accesses and retrieves images from flickr.

Photo Count (count)
The number of images to be displayed. The maximum number the flickr API allows is 500. For unlimited set to '0'. Default is '0'.

Basically this allows you to open a new browser window when you click on a shortcut in Linux instead of opening the profile manager which does not let you open a new window because it tries to start a new instance of the profile which is in use. To fix the issue create this script (e.g. firefox-run.sh) and give in execute permissions:

#!/bin/bash
cd /usr/local/apps/firefox
if [[ `ps -e | grep firefox-bin` ]]; then
`./firefox -remote 'xfeDoCommand(openBrowser)'`
else
`./firefox $1 &`
fi

You should of course change the script to use the path where you installed FireFox. Then just create a shortcut to the newly created script and the issue should be resolved. More remote command information can be found at http://www.mozilla.org/unix/remote.html.

Build mono. mcs, and gtk-sharp from CVS on windows

I finally got mono, mcs, and gtk-sharp to build correctly on my windows cygwin environment and I thought I would write some detailed instructions for all to enjoy. I also thought it was complicated enough that I probably needed to write it down so I don't forget either. Either way you can check it out on the Mono Wiki and Gtk# Wiki. I decided to write this guide to help those like myself who would like
to be able to build mono, mcs, and gtk-sharp on a windows platform. I
have gathered information from various sources and I would like to thank
the following for their posts and information:
===========================================

1) Install the .NET SDK V1.1 from msdn.microsoft.com/downloads. I've put
this step here simply because previous instructions states to install
it. I'm don't know if and why this step is required. By the way, if you
have Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 installed on your system then you
can skip this step.

2) Install the latest cygwin setup (about 30MB). Start choosing the
default installation if you are not sure what packages you need. You'll
can always get the other missing packages later, if mono configure
script will require them. Be sure to get libiconv (not just libiconv2!).
I installed everything just to be safe.

3) Download and install the gtk+ dependencies to /usr/local:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/gtk-win/GTK-Runtime-Environment-2.2.4.1.exe
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/gtk-win/GTK-Development-Environment-2.2.4.1.exe

Note: The Runtime installer will delete the destination installation directory before
installing so it must be installed first. This is optional if you do not want to compile gtk-sharp.

4) Download and install the following dependencies packages and extract to /usr/local:

http://www.go-mono.com/archive/pkgconfig-0.11-20020310.zip
http://www.go-mono.com/archive/glib-2.0.4-20020703.zip
http://www.go-mono.com/archive/glib-dev-2.0.4-20020703.zip
http://www.go-mono.com/archive/libiconv-1.7.zip
http://www.go-mono.com/archive/libiconv-dev-1.7-20020101.zip
http://www.go-mono.com/archive/libintl-0.10.40-20020101.zip
http://www.go-mono.com/archive/libgc-dev.zip
http://www.go-mono.com/archive/icu-2.6.1-Win32_msvc7.zip

5) Open a cygwin prompt and edit your profile "~/.bashrc" by adding the following:

#Environment Variables for Mono
export PATH="/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/lib:$PATH"
export ACLOCAL_FLAGS="-I /usr/share/aclocal"
export CPPFLAGS="$CPPFLAGS -I /usr/local/include"
export LDFLAGS="$LDFLAGS -L /usr/local/lib"
export CC="gcc -mno-cygwin"
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig"
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/local/lib"
export MONO_PATH="/usr/local/lib:$MONO_PATH"
export MONO_CFG_PATH="/usr/local/etc:$MONO_CFG_PATH"

#Environment variables for Mono CVS access
export CVSROOT=:pserver:anonymous@anoncvs.go-mono.com:/mono
export CVS_RSH=ssh

#Environment variables for .NET if not already in your Windows PATH
export PATH="$PATH:/cygdrive/c/WINDOWS/Microsoft.NET/Framework/v1.1.4322"
export PATH="$PATH:/cygdrive/c/Program Files/Microsoft.NET/SDK/v1.1/Bin"

6) Create the following script, name it icu-config and copy it to /usr/local/bin.

#/bin/sh
ICU_ROOT=/usr/local/icu
case $1
in
--cppflags)
   echo "-I$ICU_ROOT/include"
   ;;
--ldflags)
   echo "-L$ICU_ROOT/lib -licuuc -licuin"
   ;;
--version)
   grep '\<u_icu_version\>' $ICU_ROOT/include/unicode/uversion.h | sed -e 's/.*"\(.*\)".*/\1/'
   ;;
esac

7) Change the script permissions by running "chmod u+x /usr/local/bin/icu-config".

8) Restart your cygwin environment

Downloading latest CVS
======================

1) Create a directory to store the source files in your home directory ("mkdir ~/src")

2) Go to the newly created directory ("cd src")

3) Login to CVS by running "cvs login" you will be asked for a password which can be left blank

4) Download the source

           To get the source for the first time run the following:

                       cvs -z3 co mcs mono gtk-sharp

           After that you can just update the source by running the following:

                       cvs -z3 update -dP mcs mono gtk-sharp

Building mono
=============

You are now ready to buld mono by running the following commands:

$ cd ~src/mono
$ ./configure --with-gc=boehm CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/local/include LDFLAGS=-L/usr/local/lib
$ make
$ make install

Note: at the time of creating these instructions the CVS had some issues so I used mono 0.30.1 source instead

Building mcs
=============

You are now ready to buld mcs by running the following commands:

$ cd ~/src/mcs
$ make
$ make instal

Building gtk-sharp
=============

1) Download and install the libglade lib package to /usr/local/:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/gladewin32/libglade-2.0.1-lib.zip

2) Download the libglade bin package and copy libglade-2.0-0.dll to /usr/local/lib:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/gladewin32/libglade-2.0.1-bin.zip

3) Edit /usr/local/lib/pkgconfig/libglade-2.0.pc and set the prefix (prefix=/usr/local)

4) Download and rename libxml2.dll to libxml-2.0.dll and copy to /usr/local/lib:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/gnuwin32/libxml2-2.4.12-bin.zip

5) Create the following script, name it libxml-2.0.pc and copy it to /usr/local/lib/pkgconfig.

prefix=/usr/local
exec_prefix=${prefix}
libdir=${exec_prefix}/lib

Name: Libxml2
Description: a XML parser
Version: 2.4.12

Libs: -L${libdir} -llibxml-2.0

6) Edit makefile.win32 located in your gtk-sharp (~/src/gtk-sharp) and
change the following path to point to the correct Microsoft .NET
Framework (I had v1.1 installed so it had the incorrect path initially).

CSC=$(ROOT)/microsoft.net/framework/v1.1.4322/csc.exe /d:WIN32

7) You are now ready to buld gtk-sharp by running the following commands:

$ cd ~/src/gtk-sharp
$ make -f makefile.win32

8) Copy the newly created dlls to /usr/local/lib:

/atk/atk-sharp.dll
/gdk/gdk-sharp.dll
/glade/glade-sharp.dll
/glib/glib-sharp.dll
/glue/gtksharpglue.dll
/gtk/gtk-sharp.dll
/pango/pango-sharp.dll

Congratulations! You should now have compiled mono, mcs, and gtk-sharp
successfully and have a working version of all of them located in
/usr/local. Please note that these projects are constantly changing and
might not always build and these instructions most likely will need to
eventually be updated. At least there is a starting point now.</u_icu_version\>
