Before and After: Through the Eyes of a Professional Hockey Player

I recently got the chance to come back to Cedar Park to shoot more photos of the Texas Stars. If you remember a few months back, I posted these Behind The Scenes photos. This time is a little different take on that, but still has a “Behind The Scenes” feel to it.

I got to Cedar Park about 3:45 pm to get setup because the players start showing up about 4:30 pm for the 7 pm puck drop. I photographed each player as they walked in and then we moved the whole setup closer to the ice for the post-game photo. I knew I wanted to make it quick and easy for them, so I only took about 10 photos of each player. They stood in front of my camera for maybe 8-10 seconds and then were on their way to get ready for the game. The Texas Stars ended up beating the Lake Erie Monsters 4-0 at this game with Matt Fraser scoring twice and Mike Hedden and Luke Gazdic each adding a goal and an assist.

“Sparked by San Antonio’s long history as an international crossroads, its lively art scene reflects the city’s confluence of cultures. As San Antonio’s reputation as an artistic hub spreads, more visitors are venturing off the River Walk to where the city’s creative tribe lives, works and plays.”

Early last year I was approached by Faith Radle and Jimmy Mendiola about being featured on VisitSanAntonio.com. They wanted to showcase my photography, and have me talk about how I liked living in San Antonio and how I ended up here. I’m not very good at being in front of the camera, so I knew this was going to be awkward. Luckily I did better than I thought I would do…although it was probably just some magic that Jim used when editing my piece. Regardless, I was VERY honored to even be asked to be apart of this. I truly LOVE living in San Antonio…I have lived here for 7 years now and don’t see myself leaving anytime soon. I have made tons of great friends here and it seems like there is always something fun to do.

Here’s my history of how I got into making photos…
2003 - Graduated from Central High School in San Angelo, Texas – Got a job at ‘The Photo Studio’ in San Angelo, Texas. My job was editing photos and then printing them on our HUGE 48″ roll printer. I spent all day listening to music while editing away pimples off of every Senior at Central High School.

2005 - I moved to San Antonio with a few friends to pursue greater things in life. Like being in a ‘touring’ band and I had just started dating Steph. (We are still together, booyah!) One of my first jobs when I got here was working at Target Portrait Studios, I absolutely HATED it. I didn’t last very long there and found a job doing the same thing I did in San Angelo, but now I was at Cody~Harris Photography off of West Avenue.

2006-2009 - I spent these years touring in the summers and winters in my band, Lie and Wait, all while still working at Cody~Harris. They specialized in school photography, so the winters and summers were usually pretty slow. That worked out great for me at the time. The last couple years at Cody~Harris, I would go out and shoot in the mornings at different daycares and schools and then come back to do editing and printing in the afternoons. This kind of helped ‘spark’ my interest into learning how to really USE a camera properly.

Late 2009 - I bought my first “real” camera from my friend Jordan. It was a Canon XTI. I immediately jumped into learning everything there was to know about it. I quickly began doing shoots for a lot of my friend’s bands…trying out different techniques and making images that I thought were creative and interesting. I had a drive to come up with an idea and then follow it all the way through to the end result. But, I constantly wasn’t happy with the quality of my images. Whether it was the lens, the lighting, the settings or the composition. I still am not 100% happy with most images that you see on your screen. There is always a drive to be better and that is what keeps me going.

Here we are 3 years later and I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon. Thanks for reading, and sorry this was so long. This is enough about me for another few years.
