This year’s concert is titled Milestones. 2010 marks several mportant military anniversaries: the 200th of the Governor-General’s Horse Guards, the 150th of the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada, and the 100th of the Royal Canadian Navy. Naturally the program will feature cavalry, rifle brigade and naval selections in their honour. You’ll also hear such features as “the RCMI March”, “Century of Progress”, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly”, the favourite “Salute to anadian and U.S. Armed Forces”, the ever-popular Massed pipe medleys, our annual sing-alongs, and more, all offered by our eleven combined massed military bands and pipes and drums.

One day I wake up, turn on the Discorvery Channel, and assume the normal position on the couch when an interesting segment of Daily Planet had caught my attention. For years I had wondered how it was possible that I could maintain the poor eating habits of a university student, put little to no effort into working out, and remain the same meatless sac of bones. I used to blame it on my "fast metabolism" which many educated people had suggested, and I believed it.

It wasn't until I viewed the segment that I had seriously considered the act of performing as a way to burn calories! According to the video, Henna Hemlenam (spelling maybe wrong) and occuational health from Norway chose to research musicians because she felt that most people think musicians work "once in a while on the stage for maybe an hour...what kind of job is that?". The tests that she conducted produced astonishing results but through means that some would find uncomfortable.

When talking about the effect of teaching improvisation to music students, peer interaction is a necessary component to an effective environment. John Barron, a jazz guitarist/bassist and educator in the Michigan/Windsor area, states that “Developing musician[s] [are] more likely to learn at an efficient pace and with depth of understanding when interacting with more knowledgeable performers – older musicians and more experienced peers – and by participating in authentic musical experiences” (Barron 2007). Students learn at a better pace and with better understanding when working with other students, therefore it seems logical to team students up in some sort of Peer Mentorship Program. In a different article by Andrew Goodrich, he explores the effect of peer mentoring as a method for training improvisers within a high school band setting. The article suggests that the benefits of peer mentoring are to help students increase their level of achievement, provide more people to turn to for help, leaving the teacher to address those who need it most, and increase social aspects of learning within students, especially leadership (Goodrich 2007).

In the education world students sadly get labeled at an early age and the label tends to stick with them for a long time and often leading to social problems later in life. Recent research by Aditi Shankardass shows that often, children are diagnosed with brain disorders based of behavioral tenancies and believes that people with children with brain disorders should get brain wave tests in order to save their child from an improper diagnosis with potential long term effects.
