About
Joshua Lance moves through painting as a form of listening—an attunement to color, silence, and the quiet pulse beneath visible things. He calls his work Visual Jazz: improvisation held within discipline, where gesture and structure breathe together.Working in a reduced palette of primaries, his paintings become fields of resonance rather than description. Forms hover between memory and perception, as if the world is being remembered rather than observed.Influenced by Impressionism, calligraphy, and classical training, his practice seeks not precision but essence—the fleeting charge of presence that dissolves the moment it is named. Nature and intuition guide the work as constant teachers.Since 1991, Lance has lived and worked across Asia, Europe, and the United States, teaching and painting while moving between cultures and landscapes. From Taiwan to Italy, Ireland to New Mexico, the world has become both studio and passage.In 2024, he completed a diploma in oil portraiture at the Angel Academy of Art in Florence, deepening a lifelong dialogue with classical tradition.His work lingers in the quiet places—light on ordinary objects, the pause between moments, the unseen rhythm of human presence.
