Journal of Industrial Engineering and Management: Announcements

The Journal of Industrial Engineering and Management (JIEM) is pleased to announce several updates to its author guidelines and manuscript preparation requirements. These changes aim to improve transparency, align the journal with current international academic standards, and facilitate consistency in manuscript submission and publication.

Updated Manuscript Template

A new manuscript template has been introduced and must be used for all new submissions. Authors are required to prepare their manuscripts using this updated template before submitting their articles to the journal. The template standardizes the structure of the manuscript and provides detailed guidance on formatting sections, headings, tables, figures, equations, and references.

Adoption of APA 7th Edition Referencing Style

JIEM has adopted the APA 7th edition (American Psychological Association) citation and referencing style, replacing the previously used APA 5th edition. Authors must ensure that both in-text citations and reference lists comply with the APA 7 guidelines.

The updated template includes practical guidance and examples covering:

In-text citations for one, two, and multiple authors
Use of et al. from the first citation for works with three or more authors
Formatting of direct quotations and block quotations
Citation of works without authors
Multiple works cited together and works by the same author in the same year
Formatting of reference lists with alphabetical order and hanging indentation

The template also provides examples for a wide range of reference types, including:

Journal articles (with and without DOI)
Books and book chapters
Conference papers
Doctoral dissertations
Organizational reports
Datasets and preprints
Webpages and social media posts
Videos, podcasts, and government documents

In accordance with APA 7 recommendations, DOIs must be presented as active URLs (https://doi.org/...), and the reference list may include up to 20 authors before using an ellipsis.

New Mandatory Transparency Statements

To strengthen research transparency and integrity, several new sections must now be included at the end of all manuscripts:

Authors’ Contributions
For articles with multiple authors, the specific contribution of each author must be indicated using standardized contribution roles based on the CRediT taxonomy.

Data Availability Statement
Authors must specify the availability of the data supporting the findings of the study. The template provides several options, including public repository availability, inclusion within the article or supplementary materials, availability upon request, or restrictions due to ethical or legal reasons.

Use of Artificial Intelligence
Authors must disclose any use of artificial intelligence tools in the preparation of the manuscript, including writing, data analysis, or generation of figures or other materials. The journal requires the honest and responsible use of research tools. The generation and dissemination of synthetic data, text, or graphics without proper disclosure is considered inappropriate practice. When such materials are generated through code, the code necessary to replicate the results must be provided as an appendix or supplementary material.

Updated Article Processing Charge

The Article Processing Charge (APC) has been updated. The publication fee is now €595 per accepted article (from 2026-03-11).

Authors are encouraged to carefully review the new template and updated guidelines before preparing their manuscripts. These updates reflect JIEM’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high standards of academic quality, transparency, and research integrity.

The group developed a set of recommendations, referred to as the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment.

Overview

Logistics system is becoming a dominant factor as a competitive advantage for organizations running operations in Latin America. Thus, with the increased integration of suppliers operating in emerging countries to global supply chains, companies are forced to innovate for a better performance, especially when manufacturing specialized products and services with high sensitivity on time and costs.

For decades, Latin American international trade was based on three main flows:

exchange flows of manufactured products towards industrialized nations;
export flows of products from industrialized nations to Latin America; and
export flows of raw material and primary goods from Latin America to industrialized ones.

However, since offshoring strategies became a critical part of most of the manufacturing business models, nowadays this context is fundamentally different. The geographical dispersion around the globe of different value components of the same value chain, allowed Latin American countries as Mexico, Brazil, Chile and others to be part of the global supply chains they did not participate before.

Since tremendous economic globalization allows obtaining needed goods from anywhere in the world, during the next years, identify new trends, models and technologies to improve sustainability of logistics systems running operations in emerging countries as Latin America will have great importance to global sustainable economic growth.

Logistics systems is already a powerful driver of economic growth of modern nations. Similarly, companies in Latin America are looking for improving their business models, by integrating a logistics approach based on new engineering models and management perspectives. However, despite the increasing attention to the logistics systems by both practitioners and academics, the new trends of logistics systems operating in emerging countries as Latin America remain unexplored. Furthermore, although logistics systems has been explored by several researches in the past from different standpoints, most of these studies have focused on industries operating in developed markets. Since emerging markets have been recognized as the major business growth area for the century, a new and more global perspective is needed for knowing their challenges and opportunities.

The aim of this special issue is to identify and diffuse innovative and high-quality research contributions regarding the use and implementation of conceptual frameworks, strategies, techniques, technologies, methodologies, informatics platforms and models applying new perspectives on logistics systems running operations in Latin America.

Submission Guidelines and Other considerations

This special issue will only publish regular research papers. Papers submitted must not have been published previously or under consideration for publication, though they may represent significant extensions of prior work. All submitted papers will go through a rigorous peer-review process (with at least two reviewers) that will include both topic relevance as well as scientific quality. The acceptance process will focus on those papers that address original scientific contributions in the form of theoretical and experimental research and case studies applying new perspectives on Sustainable Supply Chains operating in Latin America.

Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal’s Author Guidelines.

Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the JIEM submission system at https://www.jiem.org/index.php/jiem/login according to the following timeline:

Journal Scholar Metrics is a bibliometric tool that seeks to measure the performance of Art, Humanities, and Social Science journals by counting the number of bibliographic citations their articles have received according to Google Scholar.

In keeping with the research line the EC3 Research Group began a few years ago, aimed at unravelling the inner depths of Google Scholar and testing its capabilities as a tool for scientific evaluation, the goal of this product is to identify the subset of journals indexed in Google Scholar Metrics (GSM) dedicated to any field of study which falls within the scope of the Humanities or the Social Sciences, and to offer an array of basic citation-based indicators for these journals.

GSM mainly covers scientific journals (~95% of the sources). The rest of the sources are conference proceedings (mostly from Computer Science and Engineering), and collections in repositories (i.e. arXiv, SSRN). Only journals, conference proceedings, or repository collections which have published at least 100 papers in the last five complete years and received at least one citation are included in this product. There are two bibliometric indicators computed for every journal: the H5-index (h-index computed from the citations to documents published in the last five years) and the H5-median (median of the citation counts in the documents that contribute to the H5-index).

Supply Chain and Logistics decisions under Environmental Aspect

There is an increasing awareness of the need for incorporating environmental issues into supply chain and logistics decisions because of damaging effects of increasing waste quantities. Although the effect of rapid pace of development, consumption and population growth on increasing waste production rates cannot be ignored, lack of organization and planning are also reasons for increasing all types of waste quantities in the world. Enacted obligations by governments on waste minimization and end-of-life (EOL) products and shortening life cycles make reverse logistics processes more important in certain industries such as packaging, electrical and electronic equipment, automotive and battery. Economical factors also encourage practitioners to make environmentally friendly decisions about their supply chains. EOL products have the potential for polluting the environment if they are not managed properly whereas they are potential sources of recyclable materials.

The special issue on “Supply Chain and Logistics Decisions under Environmental Aspect” focuses on publishing original and high quality papers that significantly contribute to the managing of end-of-life products and wastes properly in order to comply with governmental regulations and satisfy the expectation of conscious consumers besides gaining economical and environmental benefit. We are seeking papers introducing new concepts and developing new methodologies, especially illustrated by real world examples.

The special issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics.

How can we include inside of product development requests of sustainable manufacturing (LCA, LCM)? How can we stimulate with proper knowledge and EU, CRO/SLO legislation 'green production'? How can we decrease possibility for location of 'dirty industry' and increase support of the community, media and increase of awareness of state structures. All of these facts are additional challenges in process of moving in EU and use EU funds. Papers run the gamut from highly technical subjects that involve both theory and practice to non-technical areas that include sustainability, psychology, sociology, philosophy, and law.

Description about the Special Issue:

Gender equality is nowadays a matter that concerns many countries. Despite the great effort made by governments and the progress of laws, gender discrimination still exists in family, social, cultural, political and economic spheres. Even today, it is rare to find women at the top level in companies, academia and other organizations. Knowing the situation of women (data) is of course a starting point for changing the situation. Designing and applying, at all levels, new policies that take into account gender issues in an appropriate way it is essential to reach equality at companies; for doing so, mainstreaming and interdisciplinary are two key points.

The purpose of this special issue is to bring together researchers and practitioners from a wide range of interdisciplinary areas such as management, industrial engineering, human resources, labor economics, psychology, sociology, gender studies and equal opportunities. The aim is to build the state of the art which should allow the development of new ideas regarding gender issues in industrial engineering and management.

Description about the Special Issue:

Globalisation is one of the contextual factors most strongly influencing the way in which we understand and design today's business processes. It is a movement which also affects higher education, where national approaches are converging towards a set of models which are gradually taking root across our neighbouring countries.

It is our belief that there exists today a need to maintain an open debate as to the type of higher education most appropriate in order to develop the profession of Industrial Engineering, Operations Management and Industrial Management.

Related to this, various sources have propounded the advantages offered by considering a teamwork-based methodology with university students. On the one hand, it enables students to experiment and acquire the skills that they will need in their future jobs. On the other, teamwork used in a context of active methodologies provides deeper and more significant learning. In addition, positive effects have been shown on the academic performance of students, motivation and their attitudes towards learning. Some of these advantages have also been underscored by students, who consider group activities and active methodologies to be more interesting, entertaining and learning-facilitating than traditional teaching. Due to its advantages teamwork has been a major aspect of university teaching. However, although the majority of teachers propose group activities to their students, the question still remains as to what the best way is of organizing and handling student teamwork.

The aim of this special issue is to develop a clear definition of industrial engineering and industrial management higher education, not only in European context but in a global world. This can range from the professional profiles to be expected of those graduates, skills to be developed, methods to improve learning or assessment. Qualitative and quantitative approaches are encouraged. Only submissions of methodological and theoretical rigour will be considered.

Difference from other forms of engineering higher education (mechanical, chemical, manufacturing...).

Description about the Special Issue:

Many business processes are so complex, interconnected and subject to variability. For those reasons, it is hard to understand the components evolution and interactions within the business processes without a dynamic model. Simulation and modeling approach is a good choice to predict processes performance, to compare alternatives and to establish the effect of several scenarios on performance. Moreover, if a process does not yet exist, or company is considering a new implementation, a simulation model can give a clue how well the proposed process will perform. In addition, process simulation and modeling is a growing and exciting research field.

The focus of this special issue is on bringing together researchers and practitioners from the areas of process management, computational intelligence, decision support, simulation and modeling. The technical objective is to exchange ideas and techniques from those areas as well as to establish a framework for the development of methodologies that integrate decision support, process management, technology, simulation and modeling. Consequently, papers that address these topics are especially sought.
