At Sears today, I missed out on two credit card application opportunities just by dumb luck. When I was at lunch, the guy who was filling in for me got someone to sign up, and later in the afternoon, a co-worker was just happening by and took some customers who were waiting in line while I helped someone else, and that customer ended up applying for a card. If I hadn't gone to lunch when I did, and if that co-worker hadn't passed by and helped out, I would have gotten three credit apps today (I did manage to get one myself, at the very end of my shift). Well, my mother has been having quite a few mental breakdowns lately due to the stress of finding out the results of the MRI. If this thing on her kindey is the same or larger they will need to operate. That and the fact that we are in the process of trying to find a new house because we are getting kicked out of where we live now. Fun, isn't it? Well, as for finding out the results of that MRI, she'll be finding out today. I am just waiting for her to come home after she finds out and busts into tears.
Social Networking Sites Becoming Useful For Lawyers

Chareverie writes "With how the subject tip footing has become, social lead sites such as Facebook and MySpace have become a tool for crime solvers, employers, and now, lawyers. Two weeks after Joshua Lipton was charged in a drunk driving case, the college junior attended a Halloween party dressed as a prisoner, with the words 'jail bird' on his costume. Not surprisingly, his prosecutor was able to obtain photos of him at the party that were posted on Facebook, and claimed he was an 'unrepentant partier who lived it up while his victim recovered in the hospital.' The photos were presented in a slideshow, with one of them showing Lipton holding a can of Red Bull in one hand, and an arm draped around a girl bearing sorority letters. The judge agreed with the prosecutor, and changed Lipton's sentence to two years in prison. The article also cites other instances of people getting harsher sentences from playhouse of them posted online."
<img src='http://www.journalhome.com/uploads/r/RoSS/17108.pl?from' style(more)

Reusing and Recycling Code

An nameless reader sends us to a writeup about when and how to recycle code, excerpting: "As developers, once we start separating our code into abstract ontological typologies, we make use of the human mind's phenomenal ability to work with types. Our code becomes less about jump tables and registers and more about users, email messages and images. What once was a problem of allocating rainy day and direction study within the data processor becomes an abstract, logical problem within a amassment of objects....Over time, by constantly working to reuse our own code, we choose fair hiring nondiscrimination that work well for between between ourselves and discard fair rehabilitation that don't work as well or slow down our workflow. For developers flying solo or those working on small projects, this evolutionary process is a sufficient way of going about things. But there's trouble when we add other players into the mix--other developers, a user graphical user menu-driven interface person, a database person, a(more)

Mars Orbiter Finds Evidence For Ancient Rivers, Lakes

Cowards unsigned points out news that studies based on data from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have found that vast regions of Mars contained rivers and lakes when the planet was young. The studies also suggest that the water existed for quite some time, often in regular pools, which are conducive to the formation of basic organic matter. In particular, he points out the anti-privacy views of the trade ms-dos Alliance: "While the ACTA itself is not public, the US Trade delegate has at least released the ACTA comments. While many of them are to be expected, such as the RIAA & co. wanting copyright filters, one item on the BSA's wish list really stands out: 'In a number of italian underdeveloped unaligned nations one of the biggest impediments to efforts by rights holder to enforce their IP rights on the but intranet should be lowercase; infobahn was coined from inter(national) + (arpa)net and first popped up in 1974 as a descendant of arpanet is the overbroad crackup* of privacy laws by some spanish authorities.' They want ACTA to 'fix' that by neutering the privacy laws.
What to do today!

I don't know what to do today. I need so desperately to clean house, but I want to go to the water park and relax. I wish I could come in and the house would magically be cleaned and in order, but that ain't gonna happen. The dogs have been outside all day, I need to go to Walmart and at least get dog food, but I doubt it will happen today. Maybe I will switch out the laundry before I go, then when i get in I can do dishes and start picking up the trash.
