Local Citizen Journalism Publisher Calls Out Classified Ad

There's a thread at ElwoodIndiana.org that's pretty interesting. Quickly, a local company (fly by night it sounds like - sweeper sales, door to door) ran an ad in the local newspaper and was the buzz of the town. A little investigative work by the citizenry alerts people to the potential scam.

Citizen Journalism Contest

Al "The Computer Dude" Jordan created a contest at his ElwoodIndiana.org site that I thought was worth a mention. He's giving away $50 to a member of the site. The winner (with the best decorated house in the small city of 5,000 households) will be voted on by the members of the site. I'm not sure how he's going to handle the voting yet, but it's a great idea and I wish him the best of luck. I should be doing something similar on AFP, but I've switched gears for a while to earn some cash. (Not as bad as I was last year, pre-print, but I'm still working "on the side" a lot to keep things going. Things are going good, though. We spiked at over 5,000 visits the day after the election. Not all local, but it was interesting to see. Anyway, go check out EIO and the contest. I'll try to update when he has entries posted.

I've been super busy of late, but I wanted to mention the success my friend Al Jordan is having over at ElwoodIndiana.org. He recently asked for help and had a couple trustworthy and hardworking citizens step forward to moderate anonymous comments. His site's really taken off since earlier this year.

Wow. What a day. I went out a little before noon to cover the 10th annuel Character Counts celebration in downtown, Anderson. About three or four hours after returning from the event (with photos, video and information...) here's look at The Herald Bulletin's homepage and the Anderson Free Press homepage. Keep in mind that I'm one person and they have a lot of resources at their disposal.

Well, another issue is out. At least some of the copies. Around 17,000 will be mailed October 8th. The rest I'll be handing out around town and at events. There's a thread at AFP - where we actually have quite an active close-knit community.

Al Jordan, who runs ElwoodIndiana.org, recently decided to turn off anonymous comments on his site. He approved each and every one before it went on the site. A few months ago, participation *really* took off on the site.

After a long wait, I believe it's been rolled out to the public at large - Self Serve PPC Ads for Myspace. I'm sure the news will be spreading over the intrawebs over the next day or so. Questions about when MySpace would open this self serve ad platform to the public have been around for a while. If you haven't heard about it yet, here's a quick look at the Myspace PPC self serve ad system:

I don't have a lot of money to play with it, but I'm playing with a couple ideas. Pretty slick Flash interface. I wish I had a self-serve ad system like that. Heh. Here's the only other recent link mentioning it at the moment. Are all the advertisers eager to get their piece of the pie keeping it quiet? I'm sure MySpace won't run out of advertising space, but will the rules change as the hordes of online marketers descend? What are your thoughts? Will MySpace start to bank more money with this? Will advertisers like it?
