A colleague sent me this video of one of many Tiger's mistresses. Her actions of coming out with the details of their frolic in the sheets is not odd, it was the actual comment she made when describing Tiger as a black man.

Umm...what does a perfect clean gentleman with straight teeth have to do with him being the 'whitest black boy'. Are black men considered nasty and rude with terrible teeth? Hmmmmmm

I do not believe all people think this way but surely it's a reflection on Tiger to associate himself with a person with terrible stereotypical beliefs.

My last post was about Disney's first African American Princess. After the post, I received a lot of questions from black men. One of the questions were, "Is the prince a black man?". I explained that Disney did not explore the sensitive color lines therefore, they created a mythical country and did not define his race.

That question has inspired me to reveal ancient royalty, the civilization on Kemet Egypt, that once existed as black royalty. African Americans have a deep disconnect from their heritage and have very little evidence that we were once apart of a creating an advanced civilization.

"The civilization of Kemet began with Nubians, and example of a Nubian queen is the most influential Queens ever to rule Kemet. A princess of Nubian birth, she married the Kemetan King Amenhotep III who ruled during the New Kingdom Dynasties around 1391BC. My family and I decided to view Disney's newly added first African American princess, Tiana in The Princess and the Frog. I must say that it was a job well done! The movie from beginning to end was very witty and the characters were relatable to the New Orleans tradition. The storyline is inventive and truly entertaining. Tiana, is the epitome of strength and she discover's the true secret to happiness. The website Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 83% rating. This is a great holiday movie for the family.

Can a woman raise a man? From my observation, it's not a black and white answer. In unfortunate circumstances moms are left as sole providers and caretakers of their young impressionable male child. The difficulty in raising a male child is equipping him with that needed 'positive example' of a man.

I recently made an acquaintance with a young man who possesses great characteristics. His morale and spiritual ethic are aligned. He is also respectable, successful, a positive thinker, and did not fit the status-quo of wanting to be a 'player'. After my acknowledgment of these observations, I asked if his mother and father were still married. He stated that he's never known his father. I was surprised. I asked, " How did your mother raise such a fine young man?" He stated that his mother kept him in sports and protected him from negative influences. He also added that his uncle was that positive male role model in his life. So the answer is yes/no. Yes, single mother's can raise productive positive black men but with the assistance of a positive role model to reinforce.

That too me, my fellow Journeyers, is the key to raising your son if you are in that situation. Though a woman is equipped to handle great burdens, something will suffer. Finding avenues for support in your family or community is key. Raising our children to be productive citizens of earth takes a great deal of sacrifice. I visited my relatives this weekend and asked my mom, "What's your advice to younger women about keeping long lasting successful relationships, since you have been married for 30 years?" She advised that communication, picking your battles, respect, love, and learning your man is key. She referenced the old school song by Betty Wright, " No Pain, No Gain".

Learning your partner IS key. Once you have mastered the preliminaries (i.e. trust, love, communication) knowing what makes your partner happy or disgruntled can reduce the distracting bickering that can be challenging in relationships. If there is no way around doing something that will make him upset, but it's very important, find another way to approach him. Though Betty's lyric...be a "cook in the kitchen" may not fit everyone's lifestyle I believe the point she's making is "maintain class".

I love the line be a "mama with the kids and a you know what in the sheets". Basically be your man's freak..

I had a conversation with a colleague of mine. I posed to her a question. I asked,"Why do you believe African American communities and marriages are in a state of despair?" Her answer was very thought provoking. She stated, "Family values and community pride were cherished in our communities until the separation of the middle class from the lower class in the 1980's".

I've never heard of such a theory, but I definitely sparked my interest. The statement, in my opinion, can definitely be proven true as an attribute to the decline in social economic progress in African American urban areas.

Let's review the time line:

There was time were black people stuck together and had values. After the death of two great leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcom X, the pride and the unity began to decline. In the late 1970's, drugs began to plague urban neighborhoods. Black men were returning from Vietnam with no job or opportunities. Black men began a spiraling trend of leaving their families which resulted in the increase in poverty and criminal activities. Yet, there was still hope for young kids growing up in that time. Although the father was not around and mother was working overtime to make up for the loss of income (or on drugs), the teacher lived next door, the pharmacist lived down the street, the pastor's home was a block away. There was support system (a village) to help raise the kids. As crime increased and education and career opportunities for African Americans became attainable, a large population of the middle class left and moved to 'white neighborhoods' to live the American Dream. Who could blame them? Who wouldn't want to live like the Cosby's? But, the question is; what happened to those kid's support system? They were gone and....they didn't look back.

Hence the question, Am I my brother's keeper?

Press forward....journey alone if you must...but once successful....reach back and bring your brother with you.

I received a letter via my inbox on iseecolor. It's a letter addressed to black men. The letter is very humble and maybe some what hard to accept. But, it's worth reading and asking ourselves, do some of the negative actions in this letter define how we interact with our black men?

I have seen the error of my ways. I realize that you do not need a loud, feisty, egotistical, jealous, insecure woman in your life. You do not need that diva who can always show up the next B. The black woman's sex has become as easy as purchasing some Wrigley's gum at the gas station. There was a time when our mother's taught us the importance of valuing our body. It's has nothing to do with societies notion that if a woman gives it up to fast she's a whore. No, no, no...a WOMAN is wired to associate her sex with her heart, her mind, and her soul. Unfortunately, that lesson was not passed down to the adults within the age range of 21-30. We are the off spring of parents strung out on drugs and single parent homes. There were bigger issues our parents were dealing with. Therefore the action of embedding standards, integrity, and self love was not of importance. So what can we do? Music: The State of Hip Hop- 2009 Hip Hop Awards

This subject hits home for me because I am an 80's baby. I grew up listening to all kinds of music ranging from R&B, Rock, Hip Hop, and Da Blues. I've witnessed music revolutionized over time, as it should. But there has been a paradigm shift in music that has created a sense of abandonment. The true hip hop fans are not being fed the rhythm, the lyrics, and beats that move there soul and create a thought process. I feel as if I have nowhere to go. Hip hop (and R&B) are now...dumb.

I caught the BET Hip Hop awards last night. The energy and the creativity was absent on stage. The theme of almost every song was "look at my things". I only appreciated the seasoned hip hop artist who came on stage such as Goodie MOB and Ludacris. I at first, attributed my dislikes to the fact that I just turned 30 and this was the side effect.

Confessions of a former BET Producer. THE MUSIC IS DONE THIS WAY INTENTIONALLY.

But, I couldn't just dismiss it to that...I knew better. I did some research and found this video of a former BET producer stating that BET hand picks what music to expose and brainwash the masses. I know I sound like a conspiracist but oddly enough it aligns with what I witness on a daily basis listening to the radio. This is a big problem....protect your children from this activity if you can.

Well a break up is the only option for personal growth and freedom from misery. I know, easier said than done when their are children involved.

Although you know separating is a wise decision your heart does get the memo. The family is/was your comfort zone from the outside world. Now the family has dispersed due to the parents not being able to see eye to eye on domestic or major issues. For a woman, the connection to a man whom she loves and share a child/children with is a very emotional and spiritual one. She at one time let this man into her heart and her womb, she carried a piece of him with her for nine months. With that said, when they meet up to exchange parental duties with their child/children it's difficult NOT to feel the urge to want to be in his arms again.

So what can you do to face reality and LET GO!

I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. God allows events to happen that we cannot understand when we are in the mist of it. I advise you to pray about it, cry about it, go shopping, give yourself a makeover, and fall in love with yourself all over again. Remind yourself, you ARE a catch!

Step 1
Accept it. You need to first accept the fact that the two of you are over now. Get the silly little romantic notions that one day the two of you will fall madly in love again and live happily ever after with your children out of your head. You need to start thinking of him as being no more then just your childs father, and that is all.
Step 2
Seperate yourself from him as much as you can. No calling him because you "forgot" something. No calling his friends and asking about him. No checking up on his myspace, facebook, or other social networking sites. No sending e-mails. Just let it go.
Step 3
Keep communication minimal. Obviously you have a child with him so you need to communicate sometiems. But ONLY communicate with him when it is necessary. (IE: Only when it has to do with something concerning the child.) If the conversation starts heading towards anything else (your relationship, the breakup ect ect..) end the conversation. When you have to see him in person (to drop off the child for visitation ect..) keep it short and simple.
Step 4
Take some time for yourself. Sit down with a box of chocolate, a sappy movie, and enjoy yourself. Cry it out if you feel you have too. Treat yourself out to a manicure, day at the spa, a new haircut ect..
Step 5
Move on. Go out with the girls when you can or maybe go on a date with that guy you always thought was cute.

Atlanta Mayoral Debate on V103: Election Nov 3rd

Atlanta has been known for many years as the south's 'City of Opportunity', 'The Black Mecca', and the 'The Black Hollywood'. The great city of Atlanta have attracted well over 4 million citizen in it's metropolitan area. With this growth came a new trend in diversity, a major contrast from many cities in the south. In fact, the city's racial diversity is greater than the nation as a whole. Atlanta is also younger than the U.S. population with an average age of 33.8 compared to 36 for the population as a whole. More than 35 percent of those who moved here from 2000 – 2004 came to Atlanta from a different state. The largest percentage of people came from New York and New Jersey. That trend has changed with the decline in job opportunities.

This trend started with the insertion of Atlanta's first African American Mayor, former Mayor Maynard Jackson. Maynard signed a law requiring 25% of the city's projects to be set aside for minority firms. The policy, which still operates today, made Atlanta the most hospitable place in America for black entrepreneurs.

He also pushed through an affirmative action program that made it mandatory for contractors to take on minority-owned businesses as partners, and forced the city's major law firms to hire African-American lawyers. He threatened that "tumbleweeds would run across the runways of Atlanta airport" if blacks were not included in city contracts. Thereafter, the trend continued to and the city continued it's growth and success mainly on new construction development. In 2007, the recession hit the country and effected the city with the loss on construction contracts, the insertion if furloughs, taking cops off the street, the loss of jobs, and a alarming trend of high school drop outs began to plagued the city. (That's just the tip of the mole hill)

The current Mayor, Mayor Shirley Franklin was elected the 58th mayor of Atlanta, she was the first female to hold the post and became the first black woman to be elected mayor of any major Southern city. Franklin is the fourth black mayor of Atlanta, the latest in a line of African American mayors that stretches back to 1974.

She has served two terms. Franklin made repairing the Atlanta sewer system a main focus of her office. Prior to Franklin's term, Atlanta's combined sewer system violated the federal Clean Water Act and burdened the city government with fines from the Environmental Protection Agency. In 2002, Franklin announced an initiative called "Clean Water Atlanta" to address the problem and begin improving the city's sewer system.

She has been lauded for efforts to make the City of Atlanta "green." Under Franklin's leadership Atlanta has gone from having one of the lowest percentages of LEED certified buildings to one of the highest

Shirley Franklin has nonetheless received criticism over her sweeping pro-business policies, which have resulted in increased property values and higher real estate taxes.This has angered some segments of the city's populace who claim these policies are pushing the poor out of Atlanta.In response, emphasis has been placed on affordable workforce housing as a key component of new development activities within the city including the Franklin-supported Belt Line project.
