Noel Gallagher. Matt Berninger: Little by Little, Twice Over

One title. Two songs. One written by a lad from Manchester, the other by a baritone philosopher from Cincinnati. Both singers stole my heart this summer. Noal Gallagher, from Oasis, swaggered with vintage bravado during this 2002 anthem at Soldier Field and Matt Berninger is whispering this song like a hangover on his new LP, Get Sunk. One loud, one low—hope and heartbreak trading verses. Little by little, they got to me completely.

13. A fave song from the '70s

Let's just pause on the fact that at some point, Gary Wright, his agent, the record label, etc thought this LP art was cool. Can you dig it? I do. Runner up is Atlantic Rhythm Section's So Into You. The lyric's nuances and innuendoes were lost on me when I was 10 years old-- which I fully comprehend now. ;)

14. A song you'd love played at your wedding

My 2020 plan, Stan: "...love me till my heart stops..." This Talking Heads song has meant so much to me at many junctures in my life for far: good, bad, happy, sad... that having it played at my wedding would be the quintessential icing on the cake.

This entry's graphic support is part of the 'alarming sophisticated parody' series from, Marco Martin's, 'Everything Ages Fast'. This ad campaign almost deserves its own blog post. Stay tuned.

15. A song that is covered by another artist

Who doesn't love a good cover? Anthony Kiedis + boys do a fine job staying true to the cool vibe first established by Sly and the Family Stone circa 1973.

The Ocean // Led Zeppelin
16. A fave classic rock tune

Listening to vinyl was a special way to hang w/my older sister given our 4 year difference. She instilled my respect and love for Led Zeppelin from our collective hours of listening. Despite their vast catalogue of hits, the lesser poplular The Ocean, ranked #45 by Vulture magazine, is my fave.

I will not confirm nor deny my affinity for this song is due to a local band playing it near the end of the night which got the boys out on the dance floor--if only to just stand there, beer in hand and nod their heads. Their proximity was always scintillating. ;)

Candy Girl // Iggy Pop with Kate Pierson
17. Karaoke Duet Worthy

I've never done/sang karaoke. Doubt I ever will. But if I did, I'd love to channel Kate Pierson's moxy. This song is equally poppy and dripping with anguish. Perfect duo.

18. A fave song from my birth year

As a July Cancer baby, can't think of a more fitting tune to wrap up this post.

So here we are, Batch #2 of the 30 Day Song Challenge. This group of tunes reflects my sentiment that no matter our emotion(s), and no matter how loudly or quietly we dare to express them, they've probably already been composed near-perfectly in a tune. You just gotta be up for the hunt.

Designer/illustrator Jay Reoder, who created the illustration above, stated, "This quote comes from the German poet, Heinrich Heine. I think that sometimes music is the only way to describe certain emotions." B I N G O.

I went off the rails here regarding this 30-Day Challenge format as my additional Honorable Mentions (already a format no-no's) are just too strong to not get their own write-up. In fact, I think I'll be blowing up this whole challenge format from here on out as I made all 30 music selections a few weeks ago, and just now changed half of this batch. That's the power of music: so much of its resonance is steeped in timing and circumstance.

Being down w/the flu last week, I had a lot of time thinking about this music, hence the playlist shake up and this HELLA long post. Hope y'all have a fab week. Enjoy! xo

I love (almost) nothing more than driving in a car, listening to music. If you're bored and ask me, "wanna go for a drive?", an immediate and enthusiastic, "Yes!", will always be my answer. So this category delighted me but it's proven way too daunting. In theory, every song could fit into this category, right? Hmmm...

I was reading about Lucinda Williams' new LP while I was in bed sick which then reminded me of her 2007 show at the LC Pavilion, with opening act Carrie Rodriguez. I don't always make it to the opening act, despite best intentions, and was damn I happy I did that night. I was in the upstairs bar area talking with friends but couldn't help to stop to listen to Carrie. The LC wasn't filled w/guests yet so the sound was perfect. By the 3rd song, I had ditched my friends and made my way down to the floor, right up to the stage to catch the rest of her act.

I'm a sucker for a good fiddle, but when paired w/amazing vocals, slide guitar, and a quiet yet equally commanding stage presence... fan for life, right here, this girl. I recall her performing this song specifically and wished she was the main act (sorry, LW) as I didn't want her set to end. In my research for this post, I learned she attended Oberlin College. Further proof a lot of good comes from this great state of O-H-I-O.

(ps: this is a late afternoon, golden hour, drive in the county, kinda song. If you have a suntan and on your way to enjoying a beer, even better)

Jesse Rutherford as Chip Chrome

Ok, so here's where I'm totally breaking form with going deep on an Honorable Mention and giving zero fucks about it.

I caught The Neighbourhood this fall on a Monday night, which is a huge deal for me. Monday's are my least favorite night to catch a show, regardless of the band (Radiohead and The National were Monday shows too - ooooph) but... I had comp tickets. :) From the band who brought us, Sweater Weather, I liked their sound well enough but had never seen them live, so I went.

The show was nothing like I had expected. It was visually arresting from the get-go. Lead singer, Jesse Rutherford, opened with an acoustic version of this tune as his theatrical alter ego, Chip Chrome: dressed and painted head to toe in silver, a single spotlight, and an acoustic guitar. I was immediately mesmerized and the rest of the show just kept getting better. From Jesse's Bowie and Freddie Mercury-esque mannerisms to the lighting used to on the band to make the entire stage appear black and white... it was all rather surreal. I hope to catch them again. Did I mention there was a rope swing? So. Good.

8. Song about drugs or alcohol

Jeff Tweedy Illustrated by Philip Burke

This category was an easy and super quick pick for me. Being a loooooong-time Wilco fan, hearing/reading about Jeff Tweedy battle his demons has been sobering, forgive the pun. He has been brutally open about his addiction(s) and it's quite the cautionary tale. He is so talented, his voice so pure, particularly in this tune. When I caught Wilco this fall, Tweedy had a tinge of Bill Murray/Life Aquatic about him due to his lil beanie cap. All of which endeared himself further to me.

Coinkydink: this Wilco show I'm referencing was on the Sunday before the aforementioned Monday night Neighbourhood show. What are the odds?

Spill The Wine // War/Eric Burdon

Honorable Mention

This tune is SO perfectly placed in the pool scene from Boogie Nights. The hippy chick submerging at the 2:37 mark is cinematic brilliance. Lots of sex, drugs and rock 'n roll for all.

Lastly, bronze medal goes to JEFF the Brotherhood for their remake of Teenage Fanclub's Mad Dog 20/20, because how could I not? Any band paying homage to this right-of-passage beverage is a-ok in my books.

9. Song that makes me happy

Elsa Peretti® Cancer Zodiac Cuff for Tiffany & Co.

I don't typically go for overly pop-ish tunes but I dig this tempo and I la la love the lyrics/sentiment. It's light and it does make me happy when I hear it. I also appreciate the, "j'adore la mer," in the lyrics as I'm a shameless francophile and a Cancerian (lover of moon + sea) hence the rad silver cuff by designer Elsa Peretti above! That lovely piece of hardware would make me very happy.

Honorable Mention

Bands I've seen multiple times in the past 10 years: Beck, The National, and Spoon. Will travel to catch these shows in a jiff! Spoon never disappoints, or specifically, frontman Britt Daniels never does. He's the package deal with that scratchy voice and fantastic messy scruff on his head. This tune made the list as it's light w/a perfect mix of vocal fry. I love how it gently pokes at the desire for possibility... how it eases into asking the proverbial, "What if...?"

10. Song that makes me sad

Ok, time for a bit of energy buzzkill w/this category...

Not much to say about this song other than it crushes me. It's just a haunting tune from first chords through the vocals. I don't know if that was Marcus Mumford's intention or not. For all the research/reading I do about music, I avoid links touting, "find out the song's meaning..." I don't care what other's feel the song means. I'm content in my own reaction, my own interpretation.

However, music reviews of a song, well that's a different story. And this one from PPCorn is a worthy read about M&S's changing sound. But wait, there's more: the video for this song is simple yet emotive: a lush time-lapsed driving scene. Which come to think of it, Spoon's Do You video pretty much only consists of Britt driving. Common theme, Friends: cars + music are inextricably intertwined.

Interestingly enough, I've never seen M&S live. They just have too many tunes that tug at my heartstrings. I don't want to be that girl, crying at a rock/folk show. Know what I mean, Jellybean?

Right, wrong or indifferent, this song will forever be cleaved to a super sad Grey's Anatomy episode. I liked it pre-Grey's, for the record. It's fantastically gut-wrenching (how's that for a description?). Thank you, Gomez.

Love this tune, even if it truly is about a goldfish. RIP, lil Penelope. It could have also put this tune the driving category as this makes it onto my roadtrip playlist a lot.

Ah, I love this tune, but I REALLY LOVE this video, which captures the epitome of high school teenage purity and angst: broken down van, pep rally, sneaking kisses off in the night. This Rolling Stone's behind the scenes article just adds another layer of wonderful to this wonder years song/video.

12. Song from my preteen years

Oh. Geez. The late '70s. So much fab music, I felt it then and appreciate more now. This is a time when the middle school boys stopped listening to top/pop hits and dared to dip their toes into what their older brothers and/or older dudes were listening to. Which left the girls who still pined away for Andy Gibb in the dust of naivety.

No band delivered the goods to those pubescent boys better than the beloved Van Halen. Amiright? Running with the Devil, Beautiful Girls, You Really Got Me, etc. Their provocative lyrics ignited our girlish fears, yet piqued our curiousity: "bleeding... rotting..." layered with Eddie Van Halen's guitars and David Lee Roth's raw vocals. JUST. TOO. MUCH. Ah, puberty.

I had the great fortune to see Van Halen with David Lee Roth, then with Sammy Lee Hagar. I have my opinion. Tell me yours.

THIS IS NOT NEW by Lee

The 30 Day Song Challenge has been around since 2011 and I've always enjoyed reading/listening to the selections posted by others. Recently, I got tagged by a friend to curate my 30 songs which map to the various categories, and it's been big fun.

Currently, I do most of my blogging in microdoses via Instagram stories, but I have missed the concerted diligence blog posts require so I am blowing off the dust here for my 30 picks. The songs themselves came pretty quickly to me, but pairing them with meaningful and engaging visual fodder has been the real joy of this challenge.

I chose a different approach to this challenge too (hey, my blog, my rules.) Instead of posting a tune a day for 30 days, I'm posting weekly-ish, in 6 song bundles. It just makes for a more interesting read on this platform.

Black Tambourine // Beck

1. Song that has a color in the title

Beck has been featured on my blog plenty so it shouldn't be a surprise I'm kicking off this challenge with him. He has come a long way from the early MTV glory days. This interview between Beck and Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore is pretty epic and wonderfully awkward. After watching the video, read the comments posted... absolute comedy gold. #throwshisshoe

This song was chosen for a trifecta of reasons: Color black in the title, I love the rhythm of the song, AND if I ever play in a band, the tambourine is about all I could handle. :) The video's art direction uses a typewriter as the visual language which in turn speaks to my design nerd sensitivities. Beck has a design aesthetic that has resonated with me his entire career.

SIDEBAR: This song was also featured in one of my favorite mashups: Hollablack Tambourine Girl (Kojiro's Mashmix) featuring Beck + Gwen Stefani, of No Doubt fame. The Dust Brothers, frequent Beck collaborators since 1999, worked on this track as well. We can credit them with, "allowing Beck to move beyond the ten words that defined him at that point: “I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me?”

Carry the Zero // Built to Spill

2. Song that has a number in the title

I've been a fan of Built to Spill for years and admire frontman and founder, Doug Martsch's, original vision of switching out his bandmates with each new LP (hence the band name). More on that and the band's allegiance to the skater community in this Thrasher Magazine article. Perhaps it's the skater culture that also honed their eye to champion some truly righteous poster designs, as they are plentiful.

This specific BTS song has been on heavy rotation for me lately as it's just a damn fine tune. I love Doug Martch's voice, and considered this tune for "Song 28: An artist whose voice you love." but the fit felt better here.

Steal my Sunshine // Len

3. Song that reminds you of summertime

I love this tune now as much as I did when I first heard it in 1999. It has a simple summer vibe peppered with a sample from The Andrea True Connection's, More More More. Funny enough, that's a tune I spent a pubescent summer at my parents' County Club going around poolside singing LOUDLY, not knowing the song's context nor that Andrea True was a porn star. boom-chicka-wow-wow. Ah, god bless Tippecanoe Country Club + my folks.

Len's arrangement balances the disco undertones perfectly, all of which make me wanna go for a long drive w/windows down, sun in my face, and hair blowing all over the place, on a hot summer day.

4. Song that reminds you of someone you'd rather forget

This selection is not so much about a specific person, but more about a time + place deelio that I'm thankful has passed. I caught Bootstraps at Rumba Café during their 2014 Communion Tour. Jordan Beckett had an incredible voice and stage presence.

Gimme Shelter // The Rolling Stones

5. Song that needs to be played loud

This song takes me on a journey (in my mind, I'm totally in an El Camino. Passenger though, not the driver) And is a tune in which needs to be cranked ALL the way up. Beyond 11, even. :)

I'm guessing if I googled results for the most popular song chosen for this "played loud" category, Gimme Shelter might rank high. Merry Clayton's vocals are what made the song so soul penetrating. Hearing her vocals isolated on this sample gave me chills. Such raw talent.

That typed, all these songs should be listened to loud. Music is meant to be felt. Sometimes that's loud in between your headphones, sometimes it's truly causing a physical vibration in your car or home. GO FOR IT. I grant you full permission.

6. Song that makes you wanna dance

Well, hell, this was a tough one to nail down, as there are so many songs that make me want to dance, even sad ones... but I'm smitten with this CSH tune landing here in my week one list.

The version of Bodys I chose (not a typo, btw) is taken from the 2018 Twin Fantasy (Face to Face) LP vs from his 2011 Twin Fantasy (Mirror Mirror). There is a lot of debate re:Will Toledo's decision to remake this LP. I'm a fan of the later version. Will himself says, "...[Mirror Mirror] was never finished work."

Music critic, Anthony Fantano (aka the NeedleDrop) had strong opinions on the LP remake too. His review is worth a watch, while the review starts off a little kitschy, he gets into some legit music conversation and deliberation soon enough.

This is a long-ass song, coming in over 6 minutes. But if you're gonna dance, what's the rush, right? I dig the narrative that occurs early in the song:

"Is it the Chorus yet?" "No, it's just the building of the verse

So when the chorus does come, it'll be more rewarding."

And it IS rewarding at the 2-minute mark when the guitars open up (<--that's my made-up music phrasing, pretty sure, sorry...). Great arrangements and smart lyrics just move this song along, and me as well... even if it's just me in my home vacuuming.

Holy wow: this is a post I never anticipated having the opportunity to create. Bernese Mountain Dogs' lifespan typically caps at 10 years. This gentle giant of mine is a whopping FOURTEEN today. He is everything one could ask for in a dog: loyal, loving, and a non-slobberer. :) He has gotten me through some very dark days. Still does. And every morning I delight that he is still among us, to grace us with his kind soul. I am hopeful for many more days with him. We'll see... Happy weekend, All. xo ~Joy

I posted this to my Pinterest account a long time ago. It’s still funny as hell. And rings more true today than ever. It's fitting I'm composing this post on the anniversary of the passing of my friend, Ned Williamson. He was taken from us far too soon. Grief is a tough thing. One day you’re okay, feeling stable, the next moment any small nuance can kick you to the curb, leaving you a total wreck. I think it's because the profound impact people can have on your life — and then the fact they never fully got to learn of that impact — is what's so hard for us to accept in the end.

Ned's absence is a meaningful reminder for me to embrace life, love boldly, and take risks. Some days I am better at it than others. But I am trying. And I have my eye on the prize. So this post is dedicated to those conversations we have with ourselves during our challenges. And as you'll quickly see, the artists below have captured these sentiments like poetry in motion.

I am a morning person. Have been since childhood. La la love that time. Great thinking time - I design in my haze from when my alarm goes off to when I actually rouse from my bed. I resolve nuances I couldn't quite figure out when my brain was conscious. And, who doesn't love a great morning workout? I'm on my way to achieving breakfast club member status at Melt Hot Fitness. :) Owner Kelly Sodergren's mix of a heated studio, dim lighting, and a music library that rivals my own makes the wee hour wake up call beyond worth it. I always leave the studio feeling stronger. If not in my limbs, at least in my mind.

Hey. Hi. Remember me? Or this blog? I barely do. My last post was 3 years ago. That's like even before Emoji's were common place.

Wait. What? I know. I know. Sigh...

When Spotify, Rdio, Pandora, iTunes Ping, and Twitter Music came along, it seemed that blogging wasn’t as relevant since you could get your streaming music so readily (ps: nerd joke about Ping and Twitter Music. #posers) I was even using Facebook and Twitter for one-off music posts. But verve for a tune is hard to emit via a mere 140 characters.

During these past few years however, I’ve continued to amass a crazy amount of music and unconsciously paired the tunes with themes from my glorious interweb finds. I’ve been blogging all along, just only in my mind evidently. Who knew?

Recently, a nervous energy has washed over me and it's pushing and poking me to have my voice heard again. As a result, I have a lot to say, get out, unload. Which is why I blogged in the first place: I love writing, and don’t do it enough. This blog used to be an incredible creative outlet for me. The fact you might stop by to read my rants/raves/meanderings and even enjoy the music I posted, well that was back seat to what drove me to continually contribute to this blog.

I respect these state of affairs and their (greater?) purpose, yet they are counter to my essence. Despite being in my own state of flux, I keep pushing on. Those around me ask, "How?" It's not that big of a mystery: happiness can be found in spurts/doses/segments. And should be celebrated as such. Chasing categorical, 24/7 happiness is a challenge beyond (my) means.

My Mom led by example: she lived in the moment. Her fifth year yartzeit (an endearing term a Jewish gal friend taught me) was last week. Five years... Hard to believe.

I telegraph many special moments w/her that were just that, 'moments'... be it a half hour or 5 minutes: a scrabble game, a shared beer, an inside joke at the expense of my rival-of-the-moment... just short blips at the moment caught my breath and made me take note. I am thankful to whatever higher level granted me the awareness to take that pause.

If your parents are still alive, I suggest you love on them. Today. Or, as often as you can.

Playing a bit of catch up here so this playlist is long... but worth it. I've been working on it for awhile. Just wanted to take my time. It's a happenstance of happy tunes for reasons that probably only make sense to me. Sorry. ;) But I'm fairly sure these tunes will linger w/you, as they do me.

I am so distracted by the earthquake + tsunami in Japan. I have a friend there on business travel and can't image how the fear would be compounded by being in a foreign country away, and from your family.

For reasons unknown, this has shades of 9/11 for me in that I can't stop looking at/reading the news wires. I'm in awe of the photography shown to date. And even stumbled upon a haunting audio of the seismic waves. My heart goes out to all. The America Red Cross has set up donation relief efforts quickly. Ah, to be fourteen again.

And to be in a band. Now, that would have been sweet...

Alas, I find myself amused by living vichariously through my 14 year old niece, Britt. She's always loved music. At last count she has 3 electric guitars; a slew of amps; mics; maybe an acoustic guitar; um, two drum kits... And well-versed on all each piece of equipment. Not bad for a hobbyist, eh?

Well this hobbyist is smart and surrounded herself w/like-minded music junkies who, "...just wanna perform and have fun...". Enter, I Like It Loud, a talented trio formed while attending a music school camp in Southern Florida. Some of their fave bands are ones of pure punk goodness: Green Day, The Clash, The Ramones. They've just started playing local all-age gigs showcasing their original song, "Miss ADHD." And true to the youth of today, they have a strong grasp of the power of branding and promoting (check out their tshirts, blog, videos, facebook fan page!) As long as Britt doesn't come on stage out of an egg, I fully support my girl!

This post is a belated 14th birthday gift dedicated to my wonderfully creative, cool, and talented niece. The playlist is long, but worth it! It contains British-inspired tunes. However, some are 100% American bands which have a europhile vibe. Some are currently on the airwaves, and other's I've loved since my college days (gasp...)

Okay kids, end of January is upon us. How are those 2011 resolutions holding up? One friend calls them "Jan-Febsolutions" for their actual life span, despite best intentions. He's probably right.

If you need a little spark to rekindle your new year verve, take a look 100 Tips to Improve Your Life from 99%. These aren't resolutions: not things you need to give up, but things that can enhance your life. Note, those are def two different beasts: give up vs enhance. The suggestions and links gathered by Behance, (the creators of the "Making Ideas Happen" book) are impressive and some, even realistic. One word of caution, if you aren't a Tim Ferriss fan, this list might offend you as his thumbprint is all over this list (although he has made a kettlebell believer out of me.)

I feel we are all our own worst enemies. So give yourself a break if you haven't made a dent in your resolutions (there's still 11 more months!) Take a deep breath and merely make minor adjustments along the way versus wholesale changes. Baby steps, my Friends.

No, I did not abandon my blog. But yes, I had become super uber busy and let is slide.

Sorry. But it's my 2011 priority. Fab. Moving along...

NPR's Morning Edition published a commentary re:the rise of women's roller derby which caught my attention. The article, These Roller Skating Women Get 'Down And Derby', highlights the resurgence of roller derby and dispels the long-held stereotype that it's more theatrics vs athletic prowess. It struck a chord w/me as I have a friend who is on the Denver's Roller Dolls team and lives up to her pseudonym: Kendra Blood (aka Andrea Hill). Andrea's verve for this sport, as portrayed via her Facebook updates, is infectious. She is one wickedly smart gal (UX, strategy and insights expert) as well the consummate athlete (multiple marathoner). She moved from Columbus to Denver, a more lifestyle-driven culture, so it wasn't surprising that roller derby would appeal to her competitive nature. Andrea is proof that the former stigma of women's derby is long gone. As she puts it, "Our league is really focused on legitimizing the sport and showcasing it as a sport..." And while the West was quick to the draw, perhaps Andrea's timing was off as Columbus now has The Ohio Roller Girls (which I def plan on checking out!)

Shifting gears to the music... At last summer's Lollapalooza, Val (valslist.com brainchild) and I noticed the glut of band names with an animal aspect to them - the lineup sounded like an episode of Mutual of Ohama's Wild Kingdom. Ha. But the trend was evident. Out of fashion: names like "The " (i.e. The Hives, The Thrills, The Strokes, etc.). Enter: one's with bestial nomenclature. And with the first snow upon us, it doesn't look like the trend is near ending. The bands chosen for this post have names which read like the manifest to an ark, yes? :) Enjoy them. It was a hot day so he had to be uncomfortable (in my mind). Then when they performed later that night and he was still wearing it, it just distracted me... Music AND wardrobe critic now, I guess. :)

Getting the proverbal "Where are you?" text for a friend who's seeing an act you intended to is always bittersweet. My good friend David Murphy took his fab daughters to Lolla (from So Cal) and I was mad/frustrated/jealous (self-induced) when I got his text that they were front and center for Grizzly Bear when I had yet to lay foot one on the grounds that early day. Point goes to: Murph! (Hope the crowd surfing is still rich in your memories too!)

So....let's just talk about a "Damn: I wish I had thought of that" moment. We all know/love Etsy. But there are some odd-ish things lurking about that site. Regretsy (the self-titled 'Where DIY meets WTF' web site) was to the quick on recognizing those less than stellar homemade madness and illuminate them to those of us who deem ourselves as purveyors of good taste. But really who are we to judge? Hard to say. I mean I "L" to the "O" to the "V" to the "E" IKEA, but frankly those bags are an ergonomic nightmare. Too large... But alas here's a Babe (Inrgrid, to be exact) on Regretsy who's made fashion from them. Check out the site - it's so wrong, it's right.

While I am in the advertising/communications biz, my degree on paper is a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) so while Regretsy is awesome, I have empathy for the fine artists/crafts-persons I've met along the way that felt their craft was not understood by the masses.

For my readers this post is a blend of the madness that possibly goes into these possible creative geniuses. (One departing thought: Snuggie. Who knew...)

This tune makes me smile mostly as there was a local Columbus/Cinci Band: The Websters, that played this song. This specific tune is off the Curious George Soundtrack and it haunts me as my dear friend Ned saw this film before I did and commented on the film's deeper meaning via the soundtrack. Better Off Ned

Ned Williamson, passed away July 13, 2006. A very dark day for so many people. http://nedwilliamson.tributeforyou.com/

He passed away the day before my 40th birthday. He and I had a lot of hilarious banter about my pending Big-Four-Oh (esp since he had just only turned 36) and his absence, the lack of his snark... was beyond deafening. I now go through a bittersweet annual ritual of mourning one life and then celebrating another.

We were at a wedding w/a gaggle of friends who glommed onto the fact my father's name was Ned too. From there on, I became "Ned Jr." or "Junior" for short. The surname that stuck like glue. Amen.

This was Lucy's (aka Mrs. Ned) homage to Ned at his service, and it's still spot on:

I am grossly under-qualified to try to comment on this oil spill catastrophe yet when I heard it was going on its second month, it gave me pause. Another staggering stat I read last week is apparently the oil spilled so far would have fueled the United States for FOUR hours. WHAT? That's all?

When will it end? No one knows.

I came across Richard Shepard's site and his aerial images of this debacle are arresting--as are his first-hand accounts from talking w/the locals while documenting this disaster. Worth a visit.

How does this all works into a blog post? Well I love songs that have this 'on and on and on' vibe. A perpetual motion, if you will. And I have more friends than not, it seems, that are runners (crazy lot, those runners). So this post is a nod to them and hopefully a near-soon end to the tragedy in the Gulf.

I was exposed to The Wooden Tops via a road trip from Springfield to Cincinnati (destination: a landmark Cinci Diner who's name I cannot recall. Suggestions welcomed.) Off the Giant LP. (okay, I had the cassette and played it to death) Every song was great. Very rhythmic. Fantastic lyrics here in Good Thing. Be sure to give an acute listen.

Perfect words of advice to BP? Hell, for all of us truthfully. The Soft Pack will be at Del Mar Race Track (xo Lucy + Ned) in August. Would love to see them there, but guess I'll have to suffice for their Lolla gig. Not a bad Plan B.

I saw these guys on a triple bill at the Polaris Ampitheatre in the mid '90s with The Gin Blossoms and Spin Doctors-who, brace yourself-were the headliners. Yikes. Cracker. Stole. The. Show. Hearing this song live was special. You just caught all the subtle nuances of the guitar.

Odd this post is turning out so electronica skewed as categorically I'd say I'm a more Indie/Alt/Alt-Country fan--but here we are and this playlist is def suggesting otherwise. Hmmm.... Anyhow, does anyone else hear Ariel Pink's Elvis Costello-inspired vocals at 1:20? And, I love the "pick up the phone" + other lyrics droning on at the end.

This is a toss up: I love both the orig Guero LP + the Royksopp remix... And I love Beck Hansen even more due to paying homage to INXS (along w/St. Vincent, Liars, Os Mutantes...) INXS was mentioned above as their sound was so unique. So sad Michael Hutchence left us so early.
