There are just 34 days left until the June 26th Congressional Primary and Joyce needs your help!

Will you join our journey for progress in Upper Manhattan by making a donation of $10 or more today? You can do so by clicking here.

The reality is that our current leadership model just isn’t working, and hasn’t for a long time. But with Joyce we finally have an opportunity to shift the tide and make Congress work for us.

In 2010 Joyce won the New York Times’ endorsement for her demonstrated history as a “strong advocate for civil and women’s rights for many years.” This is proof positive that Joyce is just the kind of leader that our District needs — and deserves.

But time is of the essence! Please visit our website today to make your generous contribution, and encourage at least 10 people in your network to support our grassroots campaign by doing the same.

Can we count on you during this critical stretch?

Thank you,
Friends of Joyce Johnson

P.S. — Be sure to catch Joyce on NY1 Noticias tomorrow at 6:00pm as she talks to Pura Política – Voces de la Ciudad about her policy plans for NY’s 13th C.D.

Over the last several months Joyce has been working diligently to petition voters and deliver on her promise to bring real progress to the 13th Congressional District.

Now we need all hands on deck to ensure maximal participation in this historic race — especially with the June 1st voter registration deadline just around the corner (click here to find out how to register.)

These next 10 days will be absolutely critical — and we can’t make it through without your help!

From now until next Friday we ask that you please reach out to at least 10 people urging them to support our grassroots campaign by making an online contribution of $10 or more. You can do this by:

Telling them to visit us directly at www.ElectJoyceJohnson.com/Donate.

Using http://bit.ly/Ju3oOE to push this message out to 10 friends/followers on Facebook and Twitter

Simply forwarding this email to 10 family members, friends or colleagues in your network — and encourage them to do the same!

Remember: If you’re not at the table, then you’re on the menu. The powers that be are banking on your disengagement from this race to keep the status quo alive. Don’t give your vote away.

Thank you,

Did you miss Joyce in last week’s televised WABC-7 forum? Hosted by Diana Williams, it was the first time that candidates running in the 13th Congressional District race appeared together to present their policy agendas (with the notable exception of Rep.

“Tolerance implies no lack of commitment to one’s own beliefs. Rather it condemns the oppression or persecution of others.” — JFK

I wholeheartedly commend President Obama for declaring his full support yesterday of every Americans’ right to marry whomever they choose. Every now and again we are afforded the chance to witness such a powerful profile in courage. Yesterday’s announcement was certainly one of those moments.

As a staunch and vocal proponent of progressive human rights, I agree with the President’s position on same-sex marriage and will do everything in my power to support it. I am also very proud to live in a state that has already recognized this right for all New Yorkers. No individual or institution has the authority to dictate how people should conduct their lives — including who they choose to spend it with.

The role of true leadership is not to participate in the systemic erosion or denial of citizens’ rights, but to safeguard them. The strong statements of support made this week by President Obama, Vice President Biden and other White House officials are honorable reflections of this leadership obligation.

Still, while we savor this amazing historical moment we must also remember the long road that still lies ahead. Now it’s up to us to carry the torch forward and do our part to secure equal rights and opportunities for all.

Thank you,
Joyce Johnson

P.S. — The road to equality cannot be travelled alone. Exercise your rights by registering to vote in the upcoming Congressional primaries. The deadline for voter registration is Friday, June 1st so make sure to do so today!

“Everyone can be great, because everyone can serve.” — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dear Supporters,

From Harlem and Washington Heights to El Barrio and Kingsbridge, many people are not only speaking up about the urgent need for change — they are giving their time to make it happen.

In that same spirit, we would like to welcome all of the amazing campaign volunteers who have joined our mission to elect Joyce Johnson to Congress in NY’s 13th District. Now, with this week’s kick-off of “Working for Progress Saturdays” Joyce and her supporters will canvass across the community to let voters know that a different, better path for the district is possible.

In doing so, we will be working collectively to change Upper Manhattan by:

Knocking on doors

Making phone calls

Attending community events

Encouraging neighbors to Get Out the Vote

Just a few hours of your time will go a long way towards making this happen! If you have not yet signed up to volunteer you can do so today by reaching out to Volunteer Coordinator Marge Cardinez via email, or by calling (646) 825-1751.

Many thanks to all of you for joining our push for progress in NY’s 13th Congressional District. We look forward to seeing you out there on the campaign trail!

–FRIENDS OF JOYCE JOHNSON

P.S. — Don’t forget: Friday, June 1st is the last day for registering to vote in the June 26th Democratic Congressional Primary! Don’t miss out!

Recently Joyce had the chance to sit down with popular blog The Loop 21 for a Q&A about her background, Congressional platform, and readiness to serve NY’s 13th C.D. on Capitol Hill. Here’s a peek:

“I come from a political family. My dad was the first black elected to public office in Poughkeepsie as a council member in ’68. My parents were steeped in community, and started the Poughkeepsie Voter’s League. In their 30s, I watched these young folks take their lead in community and it was something that was always instilled in [me]. From the time of a little girl, the biggest joy I got was every four years during the Democratic National Convention. My parents had to run me to bed because I thought there was nothing more exciting than the DNC. It’s in my DNA. I escorted Eleanor Roosevelt when she came to Poughkeepsie. I met Martin Luther King, who came to my church. All of this backdrop sort of fueled this sense of activism…I want to inspire people to come back into a process that we necessarily need them in because I cannot do this work alone. No progress will be done unless folks are fully engaged. This is the opportunity I see in the 13th district.”

READ THE FULL INTERVIEW HERE

As Joyce said, we all have an obligation to our families, communities and nation to fully participate in the Democratic process. Anyone who tries to undermine that fundamental right and responsibility doesn’t deserve your vote. By making a generous donation today of $25, $50, $100 or even $500, you will join the thousands of people who have stood up to defend that right by joining our push for progress in NY’s 13th C.D.

Interested in becoming a campaign volunteer? Visit us at www.ElectJoyceJohnson.com/Volunteer today and sign up!

We hope you will join us.

…I am a leader. The Barack Obama campaign in 2007, asked me to join [them]. I organized and built a mighty army of believers and first-time people involved in the political process. It was one of the most inspiring things I’ve ever done.
