Top entrepreneur for 2010 named

TENNYSON G. CHEN, President of Bounty Fresh Food Inc., was named the Entrepreneur Of The Year Philippines 2010 in an award banquet held last night at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel.

Mr. Chen was recognized for his outstanding leadership, melding innovation and quality to secure Bounty Fresh Food, Inc.’s position as one of the country’s largest and most reputable food producers.

Using advanced technology, the company revolutionized the broiler chicken production industry and pioneered many of the systems now used by the country’s poultry integrators.

Mr. Chen will represent the Philippines in the World Entrepreneur Of The Year Awards in Monte Carlo, Monaco in June 2011.

Mr. Chen also received the category award for Master Entrepreneur 2010. He was recognized for applying sound management practices in critical areas of the company, including finance, marketing, human resources and sales.

He maintains strong working relationships with close to 1,000 contract growers, toll feedmills, hatcheries and other partners around the country.

Leading the company to the next phase of its growth, he conceptualized the Chooks to Go brand through Bounty Agroventure, Inc., BFFI’s sister company. In just two years, Chooks to Go has expanded to over 700 outlets nationwide and retails 100 million chickens a year.

Other category awards presented were for the Young Entrepreneur, Agribusiness Entrepreneur, Social Entrepreneur, Small Business Entrepreneur and Woman Entrepreneur categories.

Gabino M. Abejo, Jr., president & CEO of Abejo Builders Corporation, was presented with the Young Entrepreneur award for his accomplishments at such a young age. The award is presented to outstanding entrepreneurs below 30 years old. At 27 years old, Mr. Abejo heads the family business, which supplies the Metro Cebu Water District with up to 15,000 cubic meters of clean, safe water a day to the barangays in Talisay and Consolacion, Cebu.

Lyndon C. Tan, president of Basic Necessity, Inc., received the Agribusiness Entrepreneur award for building a company that continues to succeed despite challenges in the agribusiness industry. Through his company, Mr. Tan helped develop the local lettuce industry, helping eliminate the need for importation and reducing market prices.

Antonio P. Meloto, chairman of Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation (GK), was named Social Entrepreneur for building an organization that champions social transformation for the marginalized and the poor. With the support of volunteers and sponsors, GK has transformed poverty-stricken areas into safe and progressive GK Villages with well-built homes. It has also encouraged livelihood and self-sufficiency among GK village residents. The GK model has been replicated in other countries.

Edgar J. Sia II, chairman and CEO of Mang Inasal Philippines, Inc., was presented the Small Business Entrepreneur award for best demonstrating management excellence in a business with assets of less than P100 million. Mang Inasal fuses traditional Filipino dishes with the fast food dine-in concept. Mang Inasal started with one store in 2003 in Iloilo City. Seven years later, there are now over 250 stores and it has become the sixth largest fast food chain in the country.

Esther A. Vibal, president of Vibal Publishing House, Inc. (VPHI), received the Woman Entrepreneur award for blazing a trail in entrepreneurship, leadership and community development. Under her management, VPHI dominated the competitive textbook publishing market, accounting for over 50% of textbooks distributed to the estimated 18 million Filipino children in public elementary and secondary schools.

The recipients of the category awards were chosen from among 18 outstanding finalists from diverse industries whose businesses are situated in various regions in the country. The others finalists were Mary Joy Canon-Abaquin (Multiple Intelligence International School), Corazon Pineda-Aquino (C & Triple A Supermarket, Inc.), Paolo Benigno Aquino IV and Mark Joaquin Ruiz (MicroVentures, Inc.), Adelfa Lepura Borro (Ted’s Oldtimer La Paz Batchoy), Ireneo D. Dalayon (Federation of ARB/Banana-Based Cooperatives of Davao), Junie S. Del Mundo (EON), Teodoro L. Ferrer (Generika Drugstore), Anthony T. Huang (Stores Specialists Inc.), Benjamin I. Liuson (The Generics Pharmacy Franchising Corp.), Ronald Pineda (Adenip Inc.), Remegio Salanatin (R.G. Salanatin Construction) and Annabella Santos-Wisniewski (Raintree Management Partners, Inc.).

SGV Chairman and Managing Partner and SGV Foundation Vice-Chairman Cirilo P. Noel hailed all finalists as exceptional role models to aspiring entrepreneurs. "In this seventh year of the Entrepreneur Of The Year Philippines program, we are truly honored to share their stories of success. All nominees went through a strict financial data ranking system used by all Entrepreneur Of The Year participating countries. The finalists were further evaluated by an independent panel of judges composed of distinguished personalities from government and business.

THE EPIC RELAY IS A FORM OF ADVENTURE RACE ( visit www.epicrelay.info)
The Epic Relay is an adventure race in that teams are running continuously through the night to reach the finish. Many find the highlight of their experience to be their run in the middle of the night under the stars or full moon. But as it is an adventure race with a 250km route, teams must accept some responsibilities:

Teams are self supporting - teams are responsible to stocking their vans with their own water, food, first aid supplies, etc.
While directional arrows are placed on the course, the responsibility of knowing and following the prescribed course rests with each participant. Please always print, study and understand the leg maps in the Race Bible (available for print soon).
Hazards are not marked - runners should proceed with caution
As the route is rural and isolated, medical attention could take a while. Cell phone coverage is spotty, so if the injury is serious enough, it may be better to transport the injured person to the closest medical facility (locations and maps in the Race bible)
The route is not closed to traffic - runners are running on the side of the road. Therefore, appropriate rules (for safety and for consideration to the people who live there) apply. These rules are similar to USA Triathlon sanctioned events as their races are usually on open courses. Failure to follow these rules will result in the entire team being disqualified:

No headsets, radio and/or headphones/ MP3 Players are allowed
Use the portable toilets that are available at the exchanges to relieve yourself. You will be disqualified if you are seen relieving yourself on the ground.
No littering - trash receptacles will be available at each exchange

PHILIPPINE COFFEE SUMMIT ON ITS THIRD YEAR

After two successful summits dedicated to coffee, the Philippine Coffee Board Inc. (PCBI) will again host the 3^rd Coffee Summit on October 18, 2010 in AIM Conference Center with the theme: NEW PLANTINGS: OUR ANSWER TO THE COFFEE CHALLENGE.

Stakeholders and partners from Benguet to Sulu will be attending the Coffee Summit to share ideas, and come up with a unified Vision and Mission for the vibrant coffee industry. The regional directors of Department of Agriculture, the DA-HVCC (High Value Commercial Crops), Bureau of Plant Industry, Bureau of Agricultural Statistics, DENR and the DAR. Coffee investors and private sector representatives like NISARD of Negros, Cavite Coffee Farmers Multi Purpose Cooperative and also from the academe like Benguet State University, Bataan Peninsula State University and Cavite State University will also share their programs dedicated to coffee.

“We want to plan the coffee industry’s future together with all stakeholders,” says Nicholas Matti, Chair of the Philippine Coffee Board, Inc. who has been actively encouraging Negros farmers and investors to plant coffee once again in the foothills of Mount Kanlaon. He will have representatives from NISARD headed by Boyet Uychiat who have established the Kanlaon Arabica Initiative or KAI.

“In the past summits, we engaged our government agencies and our academe especially in coffee research,” says Dr Alejandro C. Mojica, who heads the National Coffee Research Center based in Cavite. “This year, we are updating our information especially from the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics, so we can plan our solution for the many challenges our farmers face,” he continues.

“Anybody interested in the coffee business of farming should attend this summit,” says Matti. “You will get to meet people who have the same vision to have a profitable coffee farm while helping our country lessen dependence on coffee imports,” he exclaims.

COFFEE ORIGINS 2010 set this October

The Philippines’ only largest FREE coffee sampling show starts October 7 at the Greenbelt 5 Gallery. Organized by the Philippine Coffee Board and sponsored by Ayala Malls, the show is on its 14^th year having started as “Black and White” in 1997 and renamed COFFEE ORIGINS in 2009. It is held annually every October to celebrate Coffee Month.

A long list of activities is set for the celebration which includes: Coffee Seminars, Coffee Farm Tours and Coffee Farming sessions. The 3^rd National Coffee Summit is also held to cap the events on October 18, 2010 at the AIM Conference Center. COFFEE MONTH SET FOR OCTOBER

For the last 13 years the Philippine Coffee industry has been holding a coffee-themed celebration at the Ayala Center to spread awareness about Philippine Coffee. Starting as the “Black and White Festival” in 1997 when President Fidel V. Ramos declared October as Coffee Month, the Philippine Coffee Board continued its annual celebration with COFFEE BREAK in 2003 until 2008 and in 2009 it has been renamed COFFEE ORIGINS. This year it will be held October 7-20 at Greenbelt 5 at the Ayala Center.

COFFEE ORIGINS 2010 will again showcase coffees from various farms in the country from as far North as Benguet to down South in Sulu. Coffee roasters and merchants will give away free samples of coffee so the public can appreciate the goodness of our local brew. The Greenbelt 5 Gallery will be the center of Coffee-themed activities this October.

New formats of coffee like coffee pods and coffee capsules and machines dedicated to these new coffee formats will also be displayed.

Besides the coffee sampling at Ayala Center’s premiere mall for two whole weeks, there are farm tours and farming seminars scheduled. The Coffee Farm Tour starts at Cavite State University, Benificio Amadeo Coffee Mill of Nicky Matti and at Gourmet’s coffee roasting facility.

The Coffee Farming seminars will be held in a coffee pilot farm of Cavite State University where actual field demonstrations can be experienced by attendees.

Also, a first of its kind COFFEE WEBINAR on October 9 at 9 am will be held online by Chit Juan, PCB Co-Chair and Manny Torrejon, PCB resident coffee cupper and roaster, and Dr Andy Mojica, Head of the National Research Center on Coffee and author of the book BARAKO:The Big Bean.

During the old days, having perfect teeth meant that you either belonged to the nobility or to a wealthy merchant class. In fact, if you visited a common village during the middle ages in Europe, it will be very difficult to find someone with good, well kept teeth. Only the ruling class could afford the basic dental regimen and even wealth is no guarantee to having a good looking smile. England’s Queen Elizabeth I may have ruled over an empire but she was famous not only for her pearls but for her blackened teeth. She was plagued for years by pyorrhea.

Nowadays, not only can we be free from dental cavities, we can also alter the way our teeth look through dental aesthetics. Many common problems of our teeth are that these are normally misaligned, uneven in length, crooked or if you smoke, discolored. Luckily for us, dental veneers can now allow us to have better looking teeth. To prepare your tooth to receive the veneer, your tooth will be cleaned, polished and impressed – which roughens the tooth to allow for a strong bonding process. With the use of special cement, the veneers will be bonded on your tooth. Final steps of the bonding involve checking your bite, chipping excess cement, and adjusting the veneers to completely fit the tooth.

It is necessary that your dentist may ask you to come back for a regular check up. This is to assess on how your gums are responding to the newly attached veneers and examine the placement of the veneers.
