I am coming home- Regreso a casa

ENG. So after three and a half years I am finally going back home to my hometown Cali. I haven't been able to sleep in a week I have been blaming it on the jet lag since last Saturday I was in New York City (for the Just Cavalli store opening), but the truth is that I am just excited to go home. You never know how much you have been missing it until you are very closed to it. I can smell the city, the fruits, see the mountains, the valley, taste the breeze... Hear the laughs... The Music:)
It is beautiful to think how all my family and friends are packing right now and heading home and I also believe it is going to be the first time after many years that almost all the people I love are going to be in the same place, like old times... It just remains me of how blessed I am and makes me very happy to say: I coming home...

ESP. Finalmente después de tres años regreso a casa a la sucursal del cielo mi Cali. No he podido dormir esta última semana, le he dado la culpa al cambio de horario ya que hace menos de una semana estuvo en Nueva York (para la inauguración de la boutique de Just Cavalli), pero la verdad es que estoy emocionada de ir a mi tierra. Uno no se da cuenta cuanto uno la ha extrañado hasta que ya esta cerca a llegar. En este momento puedo oler la ciudad, , las frutas, veo las montañas, el valle puedo sentir la brisa ... Oigo las risas y sobre todo su música :)
Es hermoso pensar como la mayoria de mi familia y amigos están empacando en este momento y están de camino a Cali, y es la primera vez después de muchos años que casi toda la gente que amo va estar reunida en el mismo lugar como en los viejos tiempos... Y esto me hace sentir bendecida y si muy feliz de decir que estoy de camino a casa...

Francesco Donadei: the artist- el artista

ENG. There are some moments in Italy, as well as some Italians, who have definitely marked part of my life living here. One of those people is Francesco Donadei. The period I got to know him in Milano was quite a beautiful one. Through him I met wonderful people that I will always take in my heart. This is why today when I was randomly walking in the center of Milano and wandering around the windows of Barclay, I was totally amazed when I saw his paintings. I immediately recognized the style and was sure it was him. It made me smile, not only because it was like seeing an old friend again, but also because the paintings are even more beautiful when you see them live.

Francesco Donadei is a talented Roman artist that through his paintings lets us explore his inner self with a symbolic and transcendental language. His passions are music and art; in my opinion a wonderful combination that can be clearly be admired in his paintings. His art is definitely influenced by his childhood, since he grew up around art with a grandfather who did restoration of prestigious art pieces, and his own father who taught art… In his paintings you can identify music instruments, like the elegance of the violin and the harp, as well as the woman's body which connects all of them together like a beautiful harmonious symphony…

So invite everybody who is in Milan to come and see his exhibit from December 5 on in Via del Mercanti in the flagship Premier from Barclays. Here is a small preview!

ESP. Hay algunos momentos en Italia y algunos Italianos que han marcado mi vida de alguna manera. Uno de esos es Francesco Donadei. El periodo en que lo conocí en Milán fue uno muy hermoso, ya que a través de él tuve la oportunidad de conocer gente muy linda que vale la pena y que siempre llevaré en mi corazón. Por eso hoy mientras estaba caminando por el centro de Milán y mirando un poco distraída las ventanas de Barclays me sorprendió en ver sus pinturas. Inmediatamente reconocí su estilo inconfundible. Me hizo sonreír no solo porque era como volver a ver un viejo amigo, sino porque las obras de arte son más hermosas al verlas en vivo.

Francesco Donadei es un talentoso artista romano que a través de sus pinturas nos deja explorar su mundo interior con un lenguaje simbólico y trascendente. Sus pasiones son la música y el arte, en mi opinión una combinación fabulosa que se puede claramente admirar en sus obras. Su arte definitivamente esta influenciado por su niñez, ya que su abuelo era restaurador de arte prestigioso y su padre enseñaba arte... En sus obras pueden identificar elementos como elegantes instrumentos de música como el violín y el arpa o el cuerpo de la mujer, los cuales al final se conectan de una manera armónica como una hermosa sinfonía.

Entonces si estan en Milán los invito a ir a su exhibición desde Diciembre 5 en Via del Mercanti en Barclays. Aquí les muestro un pequeño anticipo de las obras.

ENG. As some of you may have notice I haven't been writing lately... A close family member has been sick and this has affected me quite a lot.. When things like this happens it makes you think about everything in your life... What is really worth it, what you really value and what you really want out of this life... And you start appreciating more simple things like a call, a smile, a moment, a friend, a laugh, a song just like this one from pharrell... 24hours of happy... Here for you guys:)

ESP. Como algunos de ustedes han notado no escrito mucho últimamente. Tengo un familiar cercano enfermo y esto me ha afectado mucho... Cuando cosas así pasan te hacen pensar mucho sobre tu vida... Que es verdaderamente importante, que tiene valor para ti,que quieres realmente para tu vida... Y allí es cuando empiezas ha apreciar cosas simples como una llamada, una sonrisa, un abrazo, un amigo, una risa, un momento, una canción como esta de pharrell... 24 horas de felicidad... Fashion Careers: The Buyer- Gerente de Compras

ENG. What does a buyer do? There is no standard answer for this. In short, all fashion buyers are responsible for selecting a range of products for a specific market. Some of the tasks that buyers go through in the process of selecting products are:

Identifying trends

Liaising with product suppliers

Presenting merchandising to colleagues

Calculating profit margins

Monitoring sales

Analyzing competitors

The buyer has to be familiar with the type of customer the company products are targeting. He or she has a crucial role of influencing what consumers choose to wear and play a large role on the profits from a retailer point of view.

So how about learning more about this amazing and dynamic job from an experienced buyer in the fashion industry? Jim Tu is a buyer manager in China for Versace. He brings a lot of experience from companies such as Dolce and Gabbana, Armani and now, Versace. Jim and I met in Milan while he was living here working for Armani and I can say he is not only a great friend and person, but also one of the best professionals I know in this industry. So I am very pleased to be able to share his knowledge with my readers. Enjoy the interview!

I am based in Bejing but I travel a lot for the buyings in Milan

What is your work title?

Buying Manager for Versace China. I am in charge of the buying for the Versace boutiques in that market.

Did you always want to work in fashion?

Not really, when I was a kid I didn't know what I wanted to do... When I graduated from my undergrad I started to work in international trading/finance and then I realized I wanted to do something that I was very interested in, for me in this case it was fashion so I decided to study this so I could get into the business.

How did you get into the business?

First, I started by taking some fashion specialized courses, then I did my master in Italy. And then after my master I did some internships and then from there my fashion career started.

What was your first job in fashion?

My first job was doing reports and analyzing the business in Dolce and Gabbana.

What does a buyer does in general?

In simple words, the buyer has the job of selecting the merchandise for the market, and then he or she has to follow up the life cycle of the product from the finished goods, importation and most important, selling of the goods in the shops and also when it goes to the outlets. Apart from that, there are many varied jobs to be done. For example, product training, pricing, market study, competitor analyzes and also feedback to the headquarter of any merchandising you need in specific for your market.

What skills should a person have to do this job?

A buyer should know the product, should have the sensibility of the product and should have basic knowledge of the materials, the leather the fabric, the cutters... The buyer should know the market, should know the customer and what products they are buying. It should also have the vision to foresee the market trends. The buyer should also be able to understand the business, from analyzing the numbers to estimating demand.

What do you like and dislike about your job?

I like this job because it is fashion, I mean everybody loves fashion, there are fancy things in this industry, beautiful designs, fabrics and products and this is something that makes me enthusiastic about the industry. There are also changes every season, new trends, and people wearing the product you choose for your boutiques. This makes me feel happy because you make people look beautiful...

What I dislike about this job is that sometimes the products that you believe will be good sellers actually don't sell, and that makes you very frustrated because you have invested a lot of money on it. You’re not happy about this because it creates stock and you have to get rid of it.

Any advice for people who want to become buyers?

A buyer is not what you see in the tv shows or in a magazine, the one that wears high heels going to a fashion show, yes that is part of the life a buyer, but a buyer should be able to have the elements I told you about earlier and in the meantime he or she needs to be humble and study the market and the numbers to get better in the business.

What is fashion for you?

Well fashion changes every season. Fashion is more a trend than is perceived by most of the people, like the one everybody will like and wear the whole season.

From a buyers point of view fashion is those items that can be sold in this season or next season only.

Any life lesson you would like to share with my readers?

I started from international trading finance and then I got into fashion, so for anyone who is majoring in this or wants to change their career path, I think the most important is that you should have the passion for it. You really have to like it from your heart not because of the fancy things you see on tv or any project runway etc. You have to believe in yourself and you have to be persistent to enter in this industry.

ESP. ¿Qué hace un gerente de compras? No hay una respuesta estándar para esta pregunta, en simples palabras un gerente de compras para una compañía de moda es responsable de seleccionar una gama de productos para un mercado en específico. Algunas de las actividades que realiza un gerente de compras al seleccionar los productos para la compañía en la cual trabaja son:

Identificar tendencias

Colaborar y comunicarse con los proveedores de productos

Presentar la mercancía a otros colegas

Calcular la margen de ganancias

Controlar las ventas

Analizar la competencia

El gerente de compras también tiene que estar familiarizado con el tipo de cliente final que está interesado en el producto de la compañía o los que son el enfoque/objetivo de la compañía. El tiene el rol crucial de influenciar lo que el cliente decide ponerse, y tiene la gran responsabilidad de crear ganancias para una compañía que trabaja en la venta al por menor.

Entonces, ¿qué les parece si aprendemos un poco más sobre este trabajo tan chévere y dinámico de un experimentado gerente de ventas en la industria de la moda?

Jim Tu es un gerente de ventas en China para Versace. El tiene muy buena experiencia con compañías como Dolce Gabbana y Armani. Jim y yo nos conocimos en Milán cuando él vivía en esta ciudad mientras trabajaba para Armani, les puedo decir que él no solo es una gran persona y amigo pero también es uno de los mejores profesionales de la industria que conozco. ¿Cuál es tu cargo en el trabajo?

Soy gerente de compras para Versace China y estoy encargado de las compras para todas las boutiques de Versace en este país.

¿Siempre quisiste trabajar en moda?

La verdad no, cuando era niño no sabía que quería hacer... Después me gradué y empecé a trabajar en finanzas y comercio internacional allí me di cuenta que en verdad quería hacer algo que me apasionara, algo en lo cual yo estuviera muy interesado como la moda, por eso decidí hacer una maestría en moda y así fue como empecé.

¿Y cómo entraste en la industria?

Primero estudié cursos especializados en moda y después hice la maestría. Después de la universidad empecé haciendo pasantías y después de allí fue que mi carrera en la moda empezó a coger vuelo.

¿Cuál fue tu primer trabajo en moda?

Haciendo reportes de análisis en Dolce y Gabbana.

¿Que hace un gerente de compras?

En simples palabras el gerente de compras selecciona los productos para el mercadeo del cual es responsable y después de eso monitorea el ciclo de vida de estos productos , desde la importación, venta de estos mismos en las tiendas al por menor y hasta en los outlets. Aparte de eso hay varias actividades que se realizan como entrenamiento sobre el producto, hacer los precios de la colección, el estudio de mercadeo, análisis de la competencia, y también el hacer reportes para las oficinas principales de productos en específicos que necesitas para tu mercado.

¿Cuáles son las cualidades que consideras que un gerente de compras debe de tener?

Un gerente de compra debe estar familiarizado con el producto, tiene que tener una sensibilidad del producto, tiene que tener un conocimiento básico de los materiales. También es importante el conocer el mercado, su clientela saber quienes son y que están comprando. Otra cualidad importante es que tiene que tener visión para anticipar las tendencias del mercado. Y más importante tienen que entender el negocio y saberlo analizar cuantitativamente.

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta y menos te gusta de tu trabajo?

A mi me gusta porque trabajo con moda, ¿a quién no le gusta la moda? Es un sector con mucho glamour, con hermosos diseños, telas y productos y eso me hace muy entusiasta de esta industria. También es una industria que vive constantemente en el cambio, cada estación es diferente, ¡nuevas tendencias! También el ver a la gente usando tus productos me hace feliz porque hago que la gente se vea hermosa. Lo que no me gusta de este trabajo es que a veces las cosas en las que crees no se convierten en tus productos más vendidos y en realidad terminan vendiendo bien poco y eso te llena de frustración porque invertiste bastante dinero en ellos. Esto no te pone contento porque el hecho de no venderlas te crea stock del cual te tienes que deshacer.

¿Un consejo para las personas que les gustaría ser un gerente de compras?

Un gerente de compras no es lo que ves en la televisión o en las revistas, el que se pone sus tacones para ir a los desfiles internacionales. Sí, esto es parte de la vida del gerente de compras pero es fundamental que él o ella tengan los elementos de los cuales hablé antes y aparte de eso tienes que ser humilde, tienes que estudiar el mercado y conocer muy bien el negocio para poder mejorarlo.

¿Qué es la moda para ti?

La moda cambia cada temporada, para mi la moda es esa tendencia que la mayor parte de las personas identifica como algo lo suficientemente fuerte para querer ponérsela toda esa temporada. Para un gerente de compras son esos productos que se pueden vender en esta o la próxima temporada solamente.

¿Alguna lección de vida que te gustaría compartir con mis lectores?

En mi experiencia yo empecé en el mundo de las finanzas y después me cambie a la moda, entonces para cualquiera que ya esté estudiando esto o quiera cambiar a esta carrera lo más importante es que tenga pasión por ella. Les tiene que gustar de verdad y de corazón y no sólo por el glamour que ven en la tele. La otra cosa tienen que creer en ustedes mismos y perseverar bastante si quieren entrar en esta industria.

Destinations: Formentera

ENG. So, this year I decided to take a Milanese vacanze (vacation), which meant I decided to go to Formentera. I wanted to know what the buzz was all about, since most Italians especially Milaneses always go there, and let's just say I was not disappointed at all. It is not a super cheap vacation like I thought it would be, since it is what I consider super "near", but anyhow the place is totally worth visiting. Formentera is a Spanish island right next to Ibiza. Definitely more relaxed than its sister Island but still super fun! For sure you will most likely hear Italian everywhere, for me it was like being in Miami and just speaking in Spanish and eating latin food. Some may love this some may hate it, but I find it quite interesting how a beautiful island like this has 90% Italian tourists. In my opinion, Italians do have good taste and know how to choose good things because the place is absolutely fabulous. So, for sure I advise everyone to go to this island 'cause it is definitely a bit of paradise on Earth.

ESP. Estas vacaciones decidí tomarme unas vacanze estilo Milanese, eso quiere decir que me fui a Formentera. Quería descubrir qué era toda la bulla alrededor de esta isla ya que todos mis amigos italianos, especialmente los de Milán casi siempre van allí y pues les puedo confesar que no me decepcionó para nada la isla. No son las vacaciones más baratas que he hecho a pesar de que la isla queda bien "cerca" en mis términos de viajes, pero definitivamente son unas vacaciones que valen la pena. Formentera es una isla española que literalmente queda al lado de Ibiza, pero es mucho más relajada sin dejar de ser divertida! De seguro oirás italiano por todos lados, como digo yo es como cuando estás en Miami y sólo oyes español y comes comida latina. Para algunas personas esto es súper chévere y para otras un poco menos, pero encuentro muy interesante que un lugar tan hermoso como esta isla tenga 90% de turistas italianos. En mi opinión los italianos tienen muy buen gusto y saben escoger bien las cosas porque el lugar es fabuloso. Entonces de seguro les recomiendo visitar Formentera porque definitivamente es un pedacito de paraíso aquí en la tierra.

The first time- La primera vez

ENG. Near my house there is a sign that says: when was the last time you did something for the first time? I have been passing that sign for the past month and it kept ticking in my mind... When was the last time I did something for the first time? I surely enjoy first times, that was one of the reasons I decided to come to Italy, to learn a new language. Every day for me in Italy was like a first time because every day I learned a new word, a new thing about the culture, etc. That is also the reason why I travel so much and had also promise myself to visit at least two new places each year, because the first time of something, even though it may be scary, is always exciting and can end up being a wonderful experience that you will always remember. So with that in mind I decided this summer to do something that for many of you is a given, but for me is a first time: I learned how to drive.

While I was in Formentera we rented the twizy’s cars from Renault. I must tell you this cars are not only good for the environment - they are electric - but are much better than a motorino since they are small enough to fit everywhere when there are limited parking options but big enough to carry all your stuff. My great friend Hugo taught me how to drive in the twizy (because he is just adorable) and he had the patience of guiding me through the process! Can't wait to practice more to finally get my car for Christmas!

ESP. Cerca de mi casa hay un letrero que dice: ¿Cuándo fue la última vez que hiciste algo por la primera vez? He estado pasado por este letrero los últimos meses y se me ha impregnado en la mente... ¿Cuándo fue la última vez que hice algo por la primera vez? A mi definitivamente me gustan las primeras veces, esa es la razón principal por la cual decidí irme a Italia para aprender un nuevo idioma, ya que cada día es como aprender algo nuevo, una nueva palabra, algo nuevo de la cultura, etc. Esa es también la razón por la cual me gusta viajar tanto y por la cual me he prometido a visitar al menos dos lugares nuevos cada año, porque las primeras veces de algo, aunque pueden dar miedo, son emocionantes y casi siempre terminan en una experiencia maravillosa y difícil de olvidar. Entonces teniendo eso en cuenta este verano decidí hacer algo por la primera vez, que para algunos de ustedes es algo que a lo mejor ya hicieron hace mucho tiempo: aprender a manejar.

Mientras estaba en Formentera alquilamos los carros twizy de la Renault. Tengo que confesarles que estos carros son increíbles, no solo son buenos para el ambiente ya que son eléctricos, sino que además son mucho mejor que una moto ya que son lo suficientemente pequeños para caber en cualquier parte y lo suficientemente grandes para llevar todas tus cosas. Mi gran amigo Hugo me ayudó a aprender a manejar en el twizy (porque él es adorable) y tuvo la paciencia de guiarme en el proceso. ¡No puedo esperar a finalmente comprarme un carro para Navidad!

ENG. So I have very exciting news to communicate to all my lovers in Colombia. From September on I will start teaching virtual classes for the LaSalle College in Bogota. I am very excited for this experience since it was something I wanted to do for a long time. For me it is very important to give back and share my knowledge of the fashion Industry to young people who are passionate about the business. I think the best way to do this is by teaching, which is something I really love and enjoy doing; it must be in the veins since all my aunts are teachers. I decided to teach because it is my experience that entering the RTW industry is not difficult IF you have the appropriate information of the business, such as who are the big players and which are the different career pathways you can follow. I have also realized that it is even better if this information comes from young industry professionals like me who can offer an up-to-date and insightful experience. Therefore, my lessons will provide young people access to valuable industry specific information which is not always easily available. So I am really looking forward to this new experience, in the past I had taught for Parsons University (the new school of design) in NYC my second home, but now that I have the opportunity to do it for a College in Colombia my country I am truly excited!

ESP. Hola a todos, tengo excelentes noticias para comunicar a todos mis queridos Colombianos. Desde septiembre estaré dictando clases virtuales para LaSalle College de Bogotá. Estoy muy emocionada por esta nueva experiencia ya que es algo que quería hacer desde hace mucho tiempo. Para mi es super importante el dar y compartir todo lo que he aprendido de la industria de la moda especialmente con gente joven que le apasiona la moda. Yo siempre he creído que el mejor modo de hacer esto es enseñando, algo que me encanta hacer y que lo debo llevar en las venas ya que todas mis tías son profesoras. Yo decidí empezar a enseñar ya que debido a mi experiencia, entrar en la industria de la moda no es difícil si uno tiene la información apropiada, como el saber cuales son los jugadores principales y las diferentes opciones de carreras a seguir. También me he dado cuenta que es aún más interesante cuando esta información proviene de jóvenes profesionales de la industria como yo, que te pueden dar información actualizada y te pueden hablar de sus increíbles experiencias. Por eso mismo mis clases ayudarán a que jóvenes interesados en la industria tengan acceso a información que no es siempre fácil de encontrar al menos que ya trabajes en la misma industria. Entonces estoy super contenta de esta oportunidad, ya en el pasado he trabajado para Parsons University (the new school of design) en NYC, mi segunda casa, pero ahora que tengo la oportunidad de trabajar para una College en Colombia mi país, ¡estoy aún más entusiasmada!

Change- Cambio

ENG. So, lately, I have been thinking about getting older, growing up and moving on and foward... Maybe it's because I have been going through the transition of changing houses after 6 years of living in the old one, the house where I lived alone for the first time. Also it may be that the new one is actually a grown up house and not a college student one. Or maybe it's just that I have been going through old stuff, throwing away old "memories" that don't fit the person I am anymore or add anything good to me... Keeping just the memories that have made me grow up even if they were not that nice, and getting new stuff; in the hope of making new memories, much better than the old ones because as you grow, you get wiser...

Transition and change always implies growing up, and getting to know yourself a bit better... To make crucial decisions hoping that in the long run they are going to be the best for you... To be more sure of what you want and what you don't want in your life... Change, and growing up, is not an easy thing to accept... I never thought about it but it hurts inside as your bones use to hurt as a kid. It happens slowly and you need to have a lot of patience... But at the end even though change and growing up is composed of different elements like fear, anxiety, excitement and happiness, all together like in a roller coaster, the expectation that a better woman is on the making and on the rise is much more motivating than getting off the ride to stop the change.

ESP. Últimamente he pensando en el proceso de crecer, volverse adulto y seguir hacia adelante, avanzando... A lo mejor es porque estoy pasando por la transición de cambiarme de casa después de haber vivido 6 años en la casa vieja donde viví sola por primera vez.También puede ser que la nueva casa es una casa para adultos y no para un estudiante. O simplemente es que he estado revisando cosas viejas, tirando viejos recuerdos que ya no van con la persona que soy ahora o que ya no me aportan nada bueno... Dejando solo las memorias que me han hecho crecer así no hayan sido tan buenas, y adquiriendo cosas nuevas con la esperanza de crear nuevos recuerdos, mucho mejores que los anteriores, porque como dicen, a medida que uno crece uno se vuelve más sabio.

Transición y cambio siempre implican madurar y conocerse así mismo un poco mejor... El tomar decisiones cruciales que a la larga esperamos que sean para el bien de uno... El ser más consciente de qué queremos y de qué no queremos en nuestras vidas... Cambiar y crecer no es algo fácil... Nunca pensé que me incomodaría tanto, como cuando tus huesos están creciendo cuando eres niño. Este proceso sucede despacio y toca tener mucha paciencia... Pero al final, aunque los cambios y el proceso de crecer están compuestos de diferentes elementos como miedo, ansiedad, entusiasmo y felicidad, todos juntos como en una montaña rusa, la expectativa de que una mejor mujer se está desarrollando o creando es una mayor motivación que el bajarse del viaje y parar el cambio.
