Serving the Church with God Given Vision

Brighton Siyanyiza serves as the Pastor of Apostolic Faith and Acts Church. Previously he only saw the spiritual needs of the people of George Complex. But since he came into the network Pastor Brighton has come to see other needs as well: HIV/AIDS, water, sanitation, roads, education, poverty, orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs), and Child headed homes (CHH) are needs that are a concern to God, too. He now sees the church role in the community as preaching and demonstrating the gospel.

“The last four months has been revolutionary for me,” said Pastor Brighton, “First I attended the three days workshop organised by Jubilee Centre through its partners Willow Creek Church (WCC), on the doctrine of the local church.” He was one of the 184 church leaders drawn from Ndola, Chibuluma and Lusaka who attended the workshop. This helped him appreciate the importance of having a God given vision, how to write it clearly and how to implement the vision with faithfulness and fruitfulness. Previously, I used to say “my vision for the church.” This has changed, “now I say God’s vision for the church.” Pastor Brighton says that the workshop assisted him to come up with a ministry team without experiencing any insecurity that he used to have before attending the training. “Before this workshop, I was the chief apostle, the bishop, the senior pastor and the prophet. Now I am building a ministry team and I am encouraging members to be open about their gifts that we become a church where all people participate.” He said.

In November Pastor Brighton attended the Global Leadership Summit in Lusaka with the support of Ridgepoint Community Church. At the Summit he was provoked to look at things that make him discontent. Pastor Brighton saw many things that made him restless in his community and realised that he had to do something. He went back to his community and shared his burden with 27 churches in the network. The network identified needs that urgently required attention of the government. The network wrote the needs and presented them to the pastors’ fellowship in George Complex. The pastors have accepted that they engage the government to help them address the issues of drainage system, water reticulation and roads maintenance.

“I have lived and led a church in this community for a long time and I did not know the disgrace of George Complex ruins,” says Pastor Brighton. Since March 2007, God has furnished me with the vision to build a church that has a concern for the people of George. Through the Jubilee Centre leadership trainings; I have been helped on how to communicate this vision not only to my church, but also to other pastors and to community leaders. Most excitingly my church has experienced membership growth to 250 from the previous 170 in the past 4 months. To God be the glory.

Photo: Pastor Siyanyiza Brighton of Apostolic Faith and Acts Church displays his hardware shop products through the grant he got.

In the meantime; Pastor Brighton is also one of the twenty pastors in Chibuluma, Mapalo, George and Chifubu who received a pastoral family grant to help them start or grow their tent-making business. “I used to spend a lot of time praying for my needs. Nowadays, I am spending quality time praying for the church needs because my daily needs are being met through the business I am doing”, said Pastor Brighton reflectively.

Pastors and Youth Leaders Receive Psychosocial Counseling Training at Kara

Four pastors and four youth leaders from the network churches in the four communities (Mapalo, Chifubu, Chibuluma and George) were sponsored to attend psychosocial counseling training at Kara in the capital, Lusaka. They have since completed and are putting into practice what they learnt. All the eight have been stationed at various clinics and hospitals within their communities. Pastor Joyce Chanda said that as a local church they were not aware of the depth of psychological and emotional impact on those infected by HIV and AIDS and their family members. But working voluntarily at Arthur Davison Hospital and after counseling over 50 people in a month, her spiritual eyes have been opened up. She recaps with these words, “People living with HIV and AIDS are desperate and desperate people do reckless things.” She said that as Christian trained counselors, we are to give hope in Christ as we care and help both infected and affected clients to acknowledge their situation, confess their sin and invite them to begin a new life in Christ. Just in the month of November, three of us have counseled 200 people infected with HIV and AIDS and have also led 30 of them to the Lord.”

Photo: Pastor Joyce with posing for a photo

Pastor Pepuzani testified that the hospital administration has seen an increase in the number of people seeking counsel since we had been attached to the hospital. “This is a testimony that there is need for the church to provide leadership in the fight against HIV and AIDS. I just want to say thank you to Jubilee Centre on how it is helping me and other leaders in 94 churches in the network on how to create a whole-life disciple-making culture in our local churches”, concluded Pastor Pepuzani.

So far 19 church and youth leaders have been trained at Kara through the sponsorship of Jubilee Centre and Willow Creek Church partnership. The training has opened more opportunities to express in a visible way the presence of the kingdom in the communities in which the network churches are found. Amina Phiri a youth leader at New Hope after finishing the psychosocial training wrote a letter of thanks to Jubilee Centre. “I am grateful for the training I got at Kara Counseling. I am volunteering at Pamodzi clinic to help my fellow youth to live a pure life.”

The Youth have a Mission

The youth from the 27 churches in George complex have teamed up and volunteered to start a business in which they are making sausages and rearing chickens. Their goal is to replicate the project in each of the partner churches and to deserving youth for further studies. “Our mission is to provide a set of core values for the youth that will guide their business dealings”, stated Edgar Chanda - the Youth Chairperson for the network youth ministry.

In Mapalo 78 youth from 15 churches took social responsibility by cleaning the drainage systems in the community for the purpose of reducing water born diseases and life threatening flooding. “Many houses are washed away and we face a lot of incidents of malaria because of lack of proper drainage system in our community”, said Jonathan - the youth coordinator for the church network. Many people passing by couldn’t believe that the youth were doing this for no pay whatsoever. One man told Jonathan, “There is no way I can do this kind of hard work for free.” Jonathan responded, “Neither, can I. But because of Jesus’ love for me, the children and families who will get affected if I do not do anything about it, I am compelled to do something about it”

Above Photo: Youths in Mapalo cleaning the drainages in the community

The Future is Bright for Elizabeth Phiri

The future is bright for Elizabeth Phiri who is one of 130 children being sponsored with $25 per month. A few years ago she had no hope of completing high school because of lack of resources to meet her educational needs. When help came three years ago; Elizabeth knew that it was the God of wonders and miracles who had done that. Elizabeth who is a key youth member at Apostolic Church of Pentecostal completed grade 12 this month. Her goal is to become a nurse. In addition to the monthly $25 she receives, she is doing part time jobs to raise funds in anticipation. Elizabeth told Martha Temfwe reflectively, “I am very grateful for the support that has helped me finish my high school education. With such an input, am empowered for life”.

Photo: Loveness Sakala at her home

Loveness Sakala who is another beneficiary also a got the highest marks at grade nine exams at her school. “With the help I receive I am no longer struggling for fees, food, shoes and uniforms. I find it a lot easier to pursue my education,” she said. Her grandmother who is her guardian as she is an orphan is often testifying to the goodness of God. Grace the pastor to Loveness stated that Loveness is a dedicated Christian who is engaged in all the activities in youth ministry.

Feed The Children

Eight churches have teamed up together to feed children who are on TB and HIV and AIDS treatment and those who are malnourished. Currently over 250 children are fed Monday to Friday in Chifubu and 50 are fed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in Kawama. Most of the children that are orphans and vulnerable are identified and recommended by the local clinics when they go for treatment. Guardians to the children bring them to the two feeding centres (Chifubu and Kawama). Because of high poverty levels some Guardians share meals with the children. As children gain weight, they are weaned from the feeding program and other children. Guardians have been receiving training in child care and how to prepare balanced diet for children. Challenges for guardians continue to be economic sustainability on how to provide for their extended children.

Insert Photo: Children eating at feeding program in Kawama

The women who cook for the children all come from different churches. They all volunteer at different days of the week. They have been taught on the hygiene, nutrition and have been given a week food rotation program that every volunteer follows.

A bole-hole has also been sunk at New Hope Christian Centre where the children are fed. This is because there has been a shortage of water in Chifubu for the past twenty years. At Kawama the church has been helped to connect to the water company so that it can provide adequate domestic water for the program

Samfya Pastors Receive Training

Pastor Lawrence Temfwe and Mr. John Sakala were the featured speakers at a two days workshop held at Assemblies of God. Twenty pastors attended the workshop where they were challenged to the ministry of restoring people back to God spiritually, relationally and socially. At the end of the workshop the pastors requested pastor Temfwe not to forget them in the training program for church leaders that Jubilee Centre (JC) conducts.

A vision that God has given does not get lost in the problems. In Jeremiah 12 the prophet was getting concerned that it was going well for those who do not fear God. Jeremiah could not understand why the unjust were prospering-Why does the way of the wicked prosper? God answers Jeremiah with a question telling him that if he grew faint with lesser trials and felt like quitting, what would you do when the battle got even harder? Simply put, God is asking if you complain about relatively easy challenges, how you will respond to harder times?

The continent of Africa continues to be confronted with destructive issues of African family loyalty, fatalism, and tribalism and dominant leadership. These are hard times for Africa. What is the church focus? Does it have God’s perspective of ultimate victory or is it looking for easier solutions such that it has became irrelevant for these hard times? JC has devised a curriculum known as Transformational Journey.

Insert Photo: Participants posing for a photo after receiving the African Commentaries at the transformational journey training.

The curriculum is designed to equip church leaders to understand the context of their community and know what God is doing and how they can join him in His transforming journey of individuals, communities and nations.

JC Resource Centre Completed

The JC resource centre is finally completed and was officially opened on 14th September by Rev. Joe Simfukwe, the principal of Theological College of Central Africa who is also Vice-Chairman of Jubilee Centre board.

About 200 people attended the colourful event that was witnessed by a team from Willow Creek Church in the USA and Southridge Community Church in Canada. Scott Pederson a board member of the Willow Creek Global Connection led the team. In his remarks he stated, “ May this building be a place where pastors and church leaders, youth leaders, men and women become equipped, bringing the message of salvation and proclaim the forgiveness of sin, and urge the people of Zambia really make Zambia a Christian Nation.”

He said this at a Training of Trainers workshop for 25 participants (14 pastors, 4 elders, and 7 volunteers) from all the four communities who met in Ndola at a 4 days intensive training program. Jubilee Centre staff, Paralegal, CINDI –Kitwe, Isubilo –Ndola and some local AWANA trainers facilitated the training.

I made my first visit to the Jubilee Centre in Zambia in July 2008 in a Transform Team through Tearfund, it was an experience I couldn’t forget and a place that rested heavily on my heart. Myself and three other girls from the team met up and prayed for guidance from God and his will in our lives. The answer to our prayers was amazing, we raised enough funds and continued monthly support for two years from our church family and friends. This enabled us to set up the Zambia Feeding Centre Project. I was overjoyed to be back in Zambia in June this year and I want to share a bit of my journey with you…….

Feeding Programmes : Through the Zambia Feeding Centre Project 150 kids receive a meal three days a week. This project is split into two communities: 100 orphans are fed in Chifubu and 50 are fed in Kawama. We visited Chifubu first and participated in cooking the food for the children alongside the volunteers. We would love to say there was an improvement from last year when it came to us helping to cook the nshima, but we have to be honest and say there wasn’t!! We were as bad as ever, but the volunteers had lots of laughs watching us!!

In Kawama we noticed that some of the kids there are very ill and emotionally this was challenging. One boy in particular - 9 years old and looked no older than 4 years old. His eyesight was bad, stomach swollen and very hard, and his organs were failing him. The pastor said this was quite common when children became so malnourished and this was just one case of many. To physically see what the feeding programme is doing in both these communities really was such a blessing for us and to see the massive change it makes to these kids lives.

The centres are run by volunteers from local churches, taking it in turn to cook the food. The kids are fed in both centres on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Volunteers arrive early in the morning to get wood for the fires, prepare and cook the food. Kids start arriving from 11 am, some being carried because they are too weak to walk. Some kids couldn’t even make it to the centre – little lunch boxes are sent to them. It was hard to watch mum’s longingly look at the food as it was served. There was enough to share with them, after the kids had been fed. A check list is kept of each kid, ensuring they come or are sent meals, their weight and progress is recorded and a close eye kept on their medical conditions with them being taken to hospital as and when necessary.

The vegetable gardens are going well, these also being managed by volunteers. The volunteers take so much time and care in insuring that they are maintained. They also built a chicken house and all the chicks (300 of them)

Volunteers Training: This was a two day programme for us to encourage the volunteers who care for people dying of HIV/AIDS. These are people, who themselves, are living in poverty but as Christians are serving in their Churches, giving what they can back into their community. What an amazing time we spent with these people. We began by reading the passage from John 13: 1-17 and then washing their feet. What a humbling and moving experience this was. We went to give, but these folk gave us so much in return.

Guardians Training: This was a workshop to encourage guardians/parents who care for orphans and we went into three communities to do this - Chifubu, Kawama and Mapalo. We have to be honest and say we were way out of our comfort zones here, but what an experience. It was tough, but we had fun too; we laughed and then we cried; we shared, gave and received. The hardest part was when we asked what their biggest struggles were. Nothing would have prepared us for the reply we received from so many – ‘We love our kids, but have nothing to give them. Every day we have to go looking for food for them and so have little time to spend with them.’

At the end of the programme we gave out paper and coloured pens, the idea being that cards were made for the guardians to give to the kids they care for. Again, this was a very moving experience for us as we helped women, who could not read or write, to make cards. These were women who care so much for vulnerable kids, but who themselves have so many needs.

As we listened to the personal struggles these volunteers, guardians and parents had, it challenged us so much. We don’t think we can ever appreciate enough how much we have and the simple day to day things we take for granted.

Pastors & Their Families: Pastors are heading up the work locally as the Jubilee Centre works with the local churches. None of the Pastors receive a salary – some of their wives work to fund their families, but even their income is minimal. We were challenged so many times by their faith and dependence on God. Prayer covers everything they do. Their love for God and the people in their churches was so evident. On talking to them, it didn’t take too long to hear their hearts and love for the people, hearts that are broken by the needs they witness every day. We asked the question ‘How, when you have so little, do you decide who to help?’ The reply came: ‘The question we have to ask is not who to help, but who not to help’. What a decision!

We were only there for two weeks and to think they see this extreme poverty on a daily basis is hard to imagine. It was a real privilege to spend time with the staff at the Jubilee Centre, to walk with them and see the challenges they face daily. To experience something of the work they are involved in and to see God at work massively in each one of their lives. I forgot to mention this at the beginning, I was a Christian for only 7 months when I made my first trip to Zambia, I never thought God could have used me the way he did and I never thought I would have been back again this year. Isn’t it amazing what God can do when we surrender our lives to him? Who knows what will happen this year……..I can’t wait to find out!!

Jubilee Centre in Ndola has started the training of 250 Sunday school teachers under the Awana leadership partnership programme aimed at empowering children with a foundation for providing national leadership.

Jubilee Centre executive director Lawrence Temfwe said under the Awana partnership, training Sunday school teachers drawn from various churches on the Copperbelt and North-Western provinces were being trained at National Rehabilitation Centre in Ndola. Pastor Temfwe said the Sunday school teachers selected to attend the four-day training programme were being equipped with various skills and knowledge needed for the establishment of new crop of national leaders.

“As a church we have to start raising children that shall one day provide leadership from a firm foundation that Jesus is Lord,” he said.

The church was the only hope to do something about Zambia’s moral decay, pastor Temfwe said.

Insert Photo: Pastor Temfwe officiating Seed Planters Training

Jubilee Centre was convinced that bringing lasting hope would only start by bringing lasting change in the lives of children.

“Hope for a better Zambia lies in infusing Godly values in children,” pastor Temfwe said.

“AUNTIE “ MWAONA KUTI NALEMELA?”-have you seen that I am now rich?” this was a question posed to the HIV/AIDS Coordinator Agnes by 12 year old Dorcas Phiri a child living with HIV in George compound in Lusaka. Agnes had no idea what the girl was talking about so she asked what the girl meant. The girl then said, “I now own a blanket and have food for the month. I have never owned a blanket, as I always have to share with someone or use a chitenge (wrapper) to cover myself. Today I have a blanket, mealie meal, groundnuts and even Soya flour. So I am rich.”

Insert Photo: Dorcas Phiri with a new blanket

Dorcas was one of the 240 PLWHA who received a blanket each, 10kg mealie meal, groundnuts and Soya flour.

Agnes was left speechless, humbled and broken, as she has never looked at owning a blanket as riches. Yet for Dorcas, these are riches. Have you ever thought that owning a blanket would classify you as being rich? Dorcas is one life that God has touched and transformed through a gift of a blanket.

“A blanket in the hands of a church that knows that Christ can use anything to invite people to a loving relationship with Him can make a difference for Christ and his Kingdom” Said Lawrence Temfwe the Executive Director of JC, who came to Christ 28 years ago after he prayed that God provide a blanket for him.

Dorcas attends church at Faith Tabernacle in Lusaka George Compound. Her Pastor, Wozifera Ngoma upon hearing the girl’s words stated, "Caring for people’s physical needs is clearly one of the most thrilling developments in disciple-making and church growth I have seen. The vision is big. The task is huge. But because it is our God who is leading the possibilities are also eternally exciting."

Persona Reflection

By Amy Clare Hanna

Who would’ve thought it was enough? Two weeks. Fourteen days. It is enough time to be transformed. As a team of twelve students from Holy Trinity Church, Cambridge we embarked on this mission project with the Jubilee Centre in Ndola, eager to get an insight into the work of this tireless NGO. However, few of us could have anticipated in how many ways we have been challenged, inspired and encouraged by what we witnessed. Volunteering and learning alongside this powerful team of driven and compassionate individuals has been more overwhelming than any words can describe!

We spent several days over the course of the mission looking at the work carried out in several church feeding programs across Ndola. A highlight of this was the time spent at the Chifubu ‘Love Kitchen.’ This is a ministry run by New Hope Christian Church. This was most apt a name as the helpers who supported the project seemed devoted to sharing their warmth with the children who were malnourished.

Many of these children were HIV/AIDS victims and it struck us resoundingly that this was not just feeding these underfed children. The serving of food is an expression of love for these children.

The Jubilee Centre’s desire to glorify God and try and build up these children emotionally and spiritually could be seen as bright as the sun that shone. Meeting orphans and these victims was heart breaking and strangely majestic at the same time. These children had experienced so much suffering in their short lives.

Yet, at the centre of so much pain it was apparent that God reigned supreme. As witnesses we all saw hope in their faces. One child, Precious, described being orphaned and how she only ate when she went to the feeding programme. That is just three meals a week. Part of this obvious injustice we saw is something none of us are keen to forget.

James Chapter 1 verses 23-27 reflect the shared sentiments we had on this.

The apparent injustice we saw informed me clearly that I need to take note of what it states in Psalm 45 verse 4 and Amos Chapter 5 verse 24. These have to be sights I use to put a face on poverty and on issues of justice that perpetuate the cycle of deprivation here.

Home based Care was another phenomenal endeavour we saw in the course of this trip. It gave us an opportunity to see the ways resources for development and empowerment for church leaders, HIV/AIDS caregivers and vulnerable families. The devotion of carers and the struggles of sufferers with the condition and an ongoing battle with stigma was difficult to hear about.

We even traveled to Lusaka to get an insight into the programs that Jubilee Centre has partnered with churches in the capital city. The scale and progress made amongst the youth leaders of the many churches that met up was both intriguing and inspirational. The vision they had as leaders was impressive, relevant and motivated. They proposed ideas for their community and equally seemed to be plagued by so many issues that seemed incomprehensible to us.

The most thorny and gloriously ruining aspect of this trip was the short amount of time spent in Child Headed homes. Homes headed up by children who were not even teenagers stressed how ridiculous the gap between the west and the rest of the world really is. It is not enough to feel pity for these children who have been robbed of childhood and are at the mercy of this broken and often dark world. The anger, frustration and confusion we all shared at glimpsing this existence, as outsiders, enough to propel and sustain momentum for social action. Though, this action has to start from inside us, with a change of heart.

Spiritually, this experience has been enriching and affirming of our faith in different ways. Every encounter on this trip with the Jubilee Centre has deepened the steps taken on our Christian walks respectively. Whilst our physical time with this Organisation “Daring to be the salt of the earth and light of the world” is over, our spiritual heart and emotional connection has only just gained momentum. We pray that this will fuel our desires to give God the glory in all we do and say.

The Wheaton College Team (Kelly Smith, Erin Cuculi, Dan Alle, Elliot Nelson and Hannah Walters) are volunteering at the Jubilee Centre through Wheaton College’s Student Ministry Partners summer program. They arrived on June 23 and will be in Zambia until August 7. Thus far, they’ve helped lead an HIV/AIDS workshop for Church Youth leaders in Mpongwe, shared music and a testimony at the Ndola Northern Technical College (NORTEC) worship service, and taught grades 1-6 at Jesus Cares Community School in Mapalo. The team enjoyed attending a mid-week Bible study at the home of one of the members of Bread of Life Church International, and it was a time of encouragement for all. They have also visited Bread of Life International Church and Bethel City Church in Twapia for Sunday services, where they have enjoyed the opportunity to meet and worship with members of the local community. In the upcoming weeks, they look forward to do more teaching at different community schools, helping with additional HIV-AIDS workshops, facilitating youth clubs and assisting the Jubilee Centre in various other projects.

While at Jesus Cares Community School, the team was able to work alongside the permanent teacher to instruct the students in a variety of subjects including mathematics, science, English and Bible. With the 1st and 2nd grade class, the team worked on the alphabet, basic spelling and reading, English vocabulary practice, and addition and subtraction. With the 3rd and 4th grade class, the team taught English grammar constructs, science lessons focused on the earth and solar system, and math lessons on multiplication and long division. In the 5th and 6th grade class, the team covered basic geology and astronomy in science, sets in mathematics, and more advanced grammar constructs in English. In all the classes, the team taught Bible lessons emphasizing the attributes of God as creator, powerful healer, and loving Father. The team was also able to teach the 1st-4th grade students several Bible songs, which was fun for both the team and the students. Opportunities to play and interact with the children during recess times were also a highlight for the team.

Insert Photo: The Wheaton Team with David Temfwe working on a bore hole at New Hope Christian Centre.

The team feels truly blessed by the opportunities they have had thus far, and they are looking forward to continuing their work with the Jubilee Centre over the next four weeks. Please remember to keep the team in your prayers as they continue to serve the Lord in Zambia.

Jubilee Centre in partnership with Willow Creek Church, Ridgepoint Church and Community Fellowship of USA supports the most vulnerable orphans by giving them school supplies at the beginning of each year. This year JC bought more than 590 pairs of shoes, 390 school uniforms and paid school fees for 250 pupils. The 62 churches JC serves identifies the needy children and provide spiritual support.

Insert Photo: Children putting on new shoes at Bread of Life Church in Mapalo.

One of the impact testimonies is by Diana Phiri an orphan; she had no hope of going to school even though she passed to go to grade eight because she had no one to pay school fees and school requisites for her. After JC provided her with school shoes and fees she had this to say, I give thanks to my church for teaching me to pray. God has answered my prayer and this will be a great encouragement to many friends who do not know God. I have confidence that God will see me through to the end of my high school.

The Church in the Community

In most communities in which JC serves the church building is the most important gathering place for members of the community. In one community a church of the JC network member is referred to as the Parliament House for the community. The church has become the meeting place for community members to resolve community issues such as how best the Christians could initiate quality development in their community etc. Moreover, due to the understanding of the importance of church building in townships and informal settlements, JC has teamed up Willow Creek Church to help churches improve their infrastructures. In the last two months JC has helped 16 churches rehabilitate their buildings.

Insert Photo: United Church of Zambia roofing..

After receiving a cheque of K4 Million, St. Pauls United Church of Zambia in Mapalo wrote to Jubilee Centre a letter of appreciation stating. Your unstoppable endeavouring in the kingdom of God has really brought up a complete change in the spiritual and physical life of the church and its members and in the community. The whole congregation rejoices as it sees the angle bars now on top of the building that assures the congregation that we are now about to enter into a bigger shelter. We shall continue to pray for you as a church

Care-Givers Receive Training

JC in conjunction with New Start Centre of Ndola held three-day seminar for coordinators in HBC management, PLWHA support formation and management, and nutrition. The coordinators have started training volunteers in their communities on what they learnt. So far the coordinators have trained more than 206 volunteers and are now able to look after themselves and other people with the knowledge and skills gained.

Insert Photo: Support group in Chifubu posing for a photo.

The volunteers have formed support groups for PLWHA in their communities. Which is a group of people who have similar problems like people living with HIV and AIDS.

Youth Social projects

The youth action clubs have taken social responsibility projects of helping to clean clinics, Police Posts, and other health institutions such as Pamodzi and George compound clinics. So far the youths have painted and slashed Chibuluma Police Post, after slashing and painting the police post in Chibuluma, the youths also donated two slashers to officers who thanked them and JC for taking part in social responsibility. They are very few organisations who work with the police force. This is an indication that JC is a genuine organisation. The officer in charge stated.

At Pamodzi clinic the sister in charge commended JC and the youth clubs as they are the first group that has voluntarily helped to clean up the clinic since she joined the staff in early 2007. She said it would be nice to have a few more people like the youths of Pamodzi youth action club. This program is part of the JC and Willow Creek partnership to envision churches in integral mission.

Pastor Liske Calls the Church to Make Disciples

Ridgepoint Community Church led by their senior pastor Jim Liske visited JC in early January. Pastor Liske conducted two three days workshops in Lusaka and Ndola at which a total of 230 pastors attended. Pastor Jim Liske told the pastors that the one thing the church is called to do is to make disciples and challenged them to be in the business of making disciples.

Insert Photo: Part of the children posing for a photo with masks.

Pastor Tim, Sally and Linsy bought school supplies for the 60 children that their church members support with $25 each. They also had organized a party for the children and encouraged them to love God and to work hard at school. Each child received a school bag and an umbrella.

JC at Saddle UP Change the World

Lawrence and Martha Temfwe were among the 21 missionary couples invited to the first Global Impact Celebration that was hosted by the First Baptist Church in Thomaston Georgia. Lawrence and Martha had a display booth where they displayed JC work to the participants. They also spoke to the senior adult Sunday Bible Class.

Insert Photo: Martha and Lawrence at FBC in Thomaston Georgia

Here is a testimony by one of the women who attended Lawrence and Marthas class. What a blessing we received this morning in Sunday School as Gay shared Thursday night’s reception for Martha and Lawrence… This along with the change of attitude for our class has been like watching miracles unfold. Gay felt so special to be a part of this and glowed as she told us about the knock at her door and seeing Martha standing there when she opened the door. We all fell in love with both of them and enjoyed them so much.

When asked about the experience at Saddle Up Celebration Martha said, I was humbled to be celebrated by a church that is not my denomination and by people whom I do not serve. God knows how to encourage us (2Chron.16:9a)

Bringing outsiders to communities where people are living in material poverty is a complex undertaking especially when the outsider is from the USA and is perceived wealthy. Crossing cultures beyond ones country is often to put oneself at risk of harming one another out of misunderstanding and ignorance. However, with the right kind of questions eyes are opened to the spiritual condition, poverty and injustices of those communities we seek to serve. When eyes are opened, the outsiders and the communities being served quickly learn that they both have something to encourage each other.

With this understanding Willow Creek has teamed up with Jubilee Centre to join and work with churches in townships, informal settlements and in rural areas. Through Willow Creek and Jubilee Centre partnership over 58 churches serving in communities where people live in poverty are finding a platform to pray, reflect, learn, plan together and move in visible unity in mission, evangelism and in building just communities. Here are some highlights of what has been happening in the past two months:

Three child headed households in Chibuluma and three in Lusaka where repaired. Pastor Namatama the chairperson of the pastors fellowship in Lusaka George Compound could not hide his joy when he said, God has visited us and is blessing us with hearts of compassion.

A clinic has been painted and the tall grass has been cut. Edgar Chanda a youth coordinator for Lusaka churches retorted, We are the light of the world and today as youths we have demonstrated that light.

A police station was painted and had it grass cut. Howard from Covenant Church stated, Chibuluma youths know that it is in serving sacrificially that God will give us responsibilities over our nation. That is why we are here we want to demonstrate our leadership skills.

A reporter from the Post Newspaper asked why should a church so far away be concerned to do this. Christopher told him, The love of Christ compels us to do this as Christians.

13 churches in Lusaka, Chibuluma and Ndola have been helped with building materials, paint and chairs. Pastor Bweupe on receiving the chairs said, These chairs are a witness that Christ is alive. My people will be motivated to share about Christ love as a result of these chairs.”

12 church leaders from the four communities received 4 days training in how to run HIV/AIDS Programs in their communities effectively.

Over K60 ,000,000 has so far been spent from a grant that Willow gave to JC. Praise the Lord.

Pray that this witness of compassion will open hearts of people to receive Christ.

Pray that they be deepened love and commitment to Christ by church members.

Praise God for Willow Creek Church generosity, kindness and burden for churches serving in poor communities.

Thank God for JC dedicated staff and pray that they continue to stay focused.

JUBILEE CENTRE, a local non-governmental organization (NGO), has embarked on a social responsibility programme for Chibuluma Township where it will spend more than K25 Million on charity works. The organization, which works with a number of churches in Zambia, has planned to spend K12 Million on assistance on the three child headed homes and another K12 Million on improving three church structures in the township.

Speaking in Chibuluma on Tuesday during the handover of building materials bought using the same money for the projects, Jubilee Centre Church Mobilisation programme coordinator, Agnes Zalila said some people faced a lot of challenges and needed help.

Ms Zalila said the programme was intended to better the welfare of the vulnerable in the township and also to help the Church respond to the needs of the vulnerable.

She said Jubilee Centre, in collaboration with local churches, identified three child-headed homes and decided to renovate their houses.

We have bought building material consisting of roofing sheets, cement, roofing timber and nails for us to use in improving shelter for these child-headed homes. We are also paying labour costs for the renovations, Ms Zalila said.

She said in addition to improving shelter for the children running families, Jubilee Centre had taken upon itself to also help three Chibuluma-based churches complete their buildings.

The three churches that received building materials from the organization are the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC), Assemblies of God and New Covenant.

One of the beneficiaries, 13-year-old Christopher Ukule said when he received the building materials that both his parents died six years ago and he has since been living with his five younger brothers and sisters together with their disabled grandmother.

Christopher, who sells twig brooms to raise income for the entire familys upkeep, said their two roomed mud house was in a terrible state.

I just want to thank Jubilee Centre for what they have done for us by providing these building materials which will help us improve our house. We dont have any relative to support us. He said.

Jubilee Centre, in collaboration with the youth drawn various churches in the same locality, also spent K2 Million on Chibuluma Police Post where it painted the structure and slashed the surrounding.

Jubilee Centre national youth coordinator, Christopher Chanda said the idea to engage the youth in cleaning the police post was to appreciate the work the police is doing.
