Mmmhh, need to resolve custom pages/templates and widget issues… The new Thesis upgrade 1.8.3 did not work out well on this site. Functionality (self built widgets sidebar) became inactive.
Search widget is different too… Don’t like it.  (Found the second search). Any other stuff that changed? Must switch back to 1.8.2. for the time being. Don’t have the time to fiddle around with it now. It’s disappointing that the switch back did not bring back the version 1.8.2 design/built in functionality. (Temporarily) Lost in migration….

Recently we read an article on SEO tips that we thought worthwhile to translate from English to Dutch.
Onlangs lazen wij een artikel over zoekmachnineoptimalisatie (SEO = Search Engine Optimization) dat we interessant vonden om te delen in NL. Hieronder een vrije vertaling.

V. Wat is SEO en waarom is zo belangrijk?
A. SEO is voor mij code en content optimaliseren voor maximale doorzoeking en verwerking door zoekmachines. Ik weet dat er meer aspecten aan SEO zitten, zoals het verkrijgen van ‘backlinks’ (externe-links), content links, paginascore optimalisatie, etc. maar in termen van opbrengst voor tijdsinvestering, gaat het in mijn ervaring met name om goede code en content in je website.

V. Zou een gemiddelde blogger moeten betalen voor SEO om een hoge score/voordelen te kunnen behalen?
A. Dat hangt af van je blogonderwerp. Als je blogt over iPads dan wordt het onmogelijk om een positie te halen op pagina 1 voor “iPad”. Dit omdat je moet concurreren met bedrijven die meer geld en middelen hebben. Maar als je blog gericht is op een gespecialiseerde (niche) markt, op een bepaalde groep producten of diensten, dan wordt het makkelijker om een hoge positie te halen binnen de minder concurrerende zoektermen. Het antwoord is dus nee, tenzij je probeert hoog te scoren op een concurrerend zoekwoord – maar dan ben je geen gemiddelde blogger.

V. Wat doe jij aan SEO?
A. Smashing Magazine heeft een bestaande SEO strategie bestaande uit ‘keywords’, meta omschrijvingen (beschrijvende informatie over informatie), permalink en titeloptimalisatie, interne links en nog meer. Ook focus ik op ankertekst, sleutel/steekwoorden en bovenal content van hoge kwaliteit waar de WordPress community profijt van kan hebben. Mijn huididge SEO strategie is vooral gericht op website optimalisatie voor mensen en niet machines. Goede content is nog steeds koning. Daarnaast kan winst behaald worden met SEO.

V. In hoeverre is “SEO geoptimaliseerd” belangrijk of kan volstaan worden met een zinnig gecodeerd thema?
A. Een goed gecodeerd WP theme, met een degelijke SEO plugin zal volstaan voor de meeste mensen. Maar mensen met een goed theme dat ook  geoptimaliseerd is voor SEO (met gegevens om keuzes te ondersteunen) zullen een voordeel hebben. Markup output (HTML) is van belang. Snelheid en controle ook. Alleen een kwaliteitsthema kan dit bieden. Dus ja, een behoorlijk gecodeerd thema volstaat. Maar met een kleine investering in een kwaliteitsthema dat gebouwd is voor SEO optimalisatie kun je direct een voorsprong realiseren.

V. Hoe kan ik voordeel behalen?
A. SEO plugins moet je niet alleen installeren maar ook leren te gebruiken. Je moet er iets mee doen zodat ze hun werk kunnen gaan doen.

“SEO plugins aren’t the set-it-and-forget-it kind of plugin, unfortunately. You actually have to do something with them in order to get them to work for you”.

Wij denken dat de gemiddelde website eigenaar met WordPress en Thesis theme voldoende SEO middelen in huis heeft.  Indien optimaal benut, zal de website goed vindbaar zijn. Een aanvullende SEO plugin en meer tijdsbesteding kan misschien nuttig voor extra’s als XML sitemap, breadcrumbs en RSS.

SEO focus op klanten/lezers :

• goede blogcontent (added value – iets toevoegen aan alles wat er al bestaat, niche)
• het slim invullen van de meta-velden bij een blogpost en op een pagina; gebruik geen hoge concurrerende zoektermen
• rekening houden met website permalinks, backlinks, etc.
• titel optimalisatie
• website verfijningen aan de hand van statiekenonderzoek en analyse van zoekwoorden/vraag

Plus marketing focus : (internet)marketingmix, vanuit consumentenperspectief.

This was long overdue on our own website :  new fonts.

Some of you might have noticed/recognised that we have been using beautiful creative fonts by a Dutch type designer in our header image for quite some time. Finally (yes, clients work take priority) we were able to go beyond reading about browser, platform and licensing fonts concerns. We installed two exljbris fonts =offered for free= on the server, got our licenses, adjusted our website style sheet and are now able to show off different web fonts. Thank you Jos Buivenga for creating and sharing Museo and Diavlo.

“Museo is a spirited semi-serif typeface with lucid, open forms and highly original details — especially the pipe-like, bent half-serifs”.
