Dear Daddy,
It is Father’s day today and I am thinking about you. Even though you went to be with Jesus several years ago, the legacy that you left behind lives on very strongly in my life. I think of how kind you were; how much you loved meeting people, and acknowledging old friends. Whenever I shop at Trader Joe’s I think about you. You ran Garner’s Market with a smile on your face, and it was a way of life for you to get to know your customers by name. You taught your employees how to go the extra mile for those they served, and quality was the reason folks made Garner’s their regular grocery store. You taught me how to thump melons to test their ripeness; how to smell different fruit to determine their freshness, and countless more other tricks. Recently I laughed as I shared with others how you’d bring unlabeled canned goods home and we’d have to shake them to figure out what was in them. I don’t think I’m very good at that game anymore, because you are not there to bring those cans home anymore. And the out-dated biscuits that we enjoyed so much. It didn’t matter if one in ten cans pop in our refrigerator downstairs—because we sure enjoyed eating the rest of them that baked just fine.

I think of the time you and I walked to J.B. Park to gather leaves for my school science project. That sunny Sunday afternoon was a very special time for us.

Well, it is time for me to enjoy my kids celebrating Father’s day with their Dad, my husband. He’s got many of your wonderful qualities, too. Thanks again for always being there for us, and leaving us such an unforgettable legacy which we can pass along to the next generation.

My surprise Birthday Party

Do you ever wonder how good your friends are at keeping a secret? Well, I found out today that I have some friends that are pretty good at hiding a secret. Today was my Birthday! My daughter, Melody planned a wonderful surprise party for me. And, it was all centered around the theme of chocolate! From the invitations to the menu--all with a chocolate theme. I mean, from the chocolate appetizers, the salad dressing on the salad had chocolate as an ingredient.. to the chocolate molten flourless cake... We also enjoyed steaming mugs of hot coffee and cool, refreshing iced tea. 4 men and 7 women attended the party, including me. Melody provided a 15-question multiple choice game designed to see how much persons knew about me. My husband, of course, won--answering, however, only 11 of the 15 questions correctly. Our son, David answered ten, and my friend, Joanne was the third in line answering 8 of the questions. If you'd like to take the test, email me for it.
We shared memories, laughed a lot, and ate a lot of fattening delights. My older sister from California added to the festive occasion a beautiful fresh flower centerpiece, and sent me a wrist corsage to wear. And the pouring rain outside didn't even dampen our spirits. I will upload some pictures soon.

How to keep from letting circumstances overwhelm you

I don't know about you, but sometimes life is just plain overwhelming. Especially if a loved one is ill. My 90 year old mother recently had to go to the hospital because she was losing blood. They couldn't figure out how. After a colonoscopy, they found a cancerous tumor in her colon. They removed it and within a few days she developed complications. Four days after she was released to a rehab facility, she developed pneumonia and was again taken to the hospital. I was on a business trip,, 2,000 miles away when she was readmitted to the hospital. All I could do is pray... and enlist friends and relatives to share some of their time and tlc with her. Within the next 2 weeks, I felt like I was bombarded with challenge in every part of my life. Pressures and deadlines at work, trying to wrap up plans for our annual April Wheels for the World Joni and Friends outreach to Mexico, mom's illness, trying to cook nourishing meals, keep the house clean, load software on my new home laptop computer and all the accessibility issues that brought... and, deal with the fact that our college junior just moved into his first apartment away from home--were my husband, Ray and I having to experience "empty nest syndrome", too? Praising the Lord and thanking Him for the victory didn't seem to ease all those pounding feelings inside. Was survival mode my only choice? How could I ever get out of this chaos? Then the Lord reminded me to look for Little miracles and make note of them. How could I have forgotten that simple remedy? It had worked in the past and I was always encouraging others to do it. .. The Bible offered lots of examples of all sorts of miracles. After a few days, my spirits lifted and I was again sharing with others how the Lord had done this or that unexpected little miracle. No longer did I feel overwhelmed and living a life of chaos. Maybe the Lord's gentle reminder might also be an answer for you?
