This afternoon, as I was running some errands after work, I realized that they have begun to decorate the shopping strip in our neighborhood with holiday decor. I know some people joke about holiday lights being put up the day after Halloween by some overzealous merry makers but, the truth is that seeing the decorations displayed really does put one into the holiday spirit! It’s that time of the year when all we can think about are those cozy nights in and pumpkin spice lattes! That means Countdown to Christmas and Miracles of Christmas are back on Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries to welcome the exciting 2023 holiday season!

One of my favorite Christmas memories was the year that I redecorated our living room and invited the entire family to spend Christmas Eve with us. I remember feeling excited to show off my decorating skills as I had single-handedly painted the whole room and picked out all the decor and furniture. Also, I was very thankful to spend this special day with all of my loved ones.

It was also the first year that we spent some time taking some priceless photos that I still treasure to this day. It’s hard to believe that our younger son is graduating from high school this year as I look at the photos of him from that day. The thing that made this particular holiday even more special was the fact that it was the last time that we were able to coordinate having everyone together for Christmas at the same time!

When you have been married for over twenty years, your definition of romance evolves over time and based on your experiences as a couple. This can definitely be said of how I perceive romance or romantic gestures from my husband over the years. As a younger couple, my expectations for romance were pretty traditional such as receiving flowers and cards on Valentine’s Day or getting cute messages on my pager. I’m pretty sure I’m dating myself by admitting that I still had a pager when we began dating in the late nineties. LOL!

Now that I am older and wiser, I understand that romance comes in many forms but, specifically, in some of the most unexpected ways. These days, romance sounds like receiving a phone call after work just to make sure that I had a good day, bringing home my favorite foods, or spending time together watching movies. You definitely come to be more appreciative of the little things once you’ve been together for a long time. After all, flowers are nice but nothing says “I love you” like snuggling up with a fuzzy throw where love happens, Hallmark Channel, which is the go-to destination for watching romantic movies.

It’s surreal to me that next week is already Christmas! This has always been my favorite time of the year because everyone seems to be in a good mood around the holidays and just a little bit nicer. I’m very excited to spend some quality time with my loved ones during this holiday season and I am reminded of holidays past and favorite memories with my husband and my sons. Both of my sons are now teenagers but I think they continue to love some of the traditions that we have repeated year after year.

Super-Simple, Amazing Chocolate Cake

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 25 minutes
Serves: 16

Ingredients

CAKE

• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
• 2 teaspoons baking soda
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 cup mayonnaise
• 1 cup cold water
• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

CHOCOLATE FROSTING

• 1 cup unsalted butter at room temperature
• 6 cups powdered sugar
• ⅔ cup cocoa powder
• ½ cup heavy cream
• 2 teaspoons vanilla

Preparation

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
2. Grease two 8-inch round cake pans and dust them lightly with flour.
3. Sift together the flour, cocoa, and baking soda in a small bowl.
4. In a separate bowl, mix together the sugar and mayonnaise, then beat in the water and vanilla.
5. Gradually add in the dry mixture and mix well.
6. Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean.
7. Make the frosting while the cake is baking.
8. In a work bowl with an electric mixer, cream the butter. Sift the sugar and cocoa powder together and gradually add to the butter, beating well after each addition. Add the cream and vanilla. Beat until well blended and fluffy.
9. Remove the cake from the oven, remove the layers from the pans, and place them on wire racks to cool.
10. Frost cake.

I’ve always been a huge fan of the horror/thriller movie genre and there are some cult classics which have been on my “favorites” list for years. The original Candyman film has always been on that list so I was thrilled to find out that Jordan Peele unleashed a fresh take on the blood-chilling urban legend.

The film focuses on the residents of the housing projects of Chicago’s Cabrini-Green neighborhood and how they were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times in a mirror. In present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, visual artist Anthony McCoy and his partner, gallery director Brianna Cartwright unknowingly open a door to a complex past that unleashes a terrifying wave of violence.

My eighteen-year old son and I had the opportunity to attend the screening of the new Candyman movie and we loved the movie. We felt that it created opportunities to unpack a variety of themes around racial justice and socioeconomic inequalities in our society. These topics are relevant and salient in light of current events and watching Candyman opened up the opportunity to have meaningful discussions around these issues. 

Candyman opened nationwide in theaters on Friday, August 27th and is rated “R” by the M.P.A.A. It is definitely a film for adults and older teens and, if you are part of my generation, you will definitely be catapulted to the first time you saw the original Candyman when you see this film. Jordan Peele has done a great job of staying true to the original urban legend while correlating the themes of the film to current social justice issues that affect our society. Head to theaters to see it as soon as you can!

**Christmas in July is showing right NOW on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries!!** 

If you have ever spent any time in New York City during the summertime, you know that it can get really hot and humid in this city. School officially ends this week and, after dealing with the pandemic for the last year and a half, everyone is excited at the prospect of the world starting to open back up.

I know that one of the things I will be doing this summer is binge watching my favorite programs and channels in the comfort of my cool air conditioner. Hallmark Channel is one of my favorite channels because they always have the best family movies and, this summer, I’m excited to celebrate Christmas in July with the original premiere of “Crashing Through the Snow” on July 10th at 9pm/8c! It just so happens that Christmas is my favorite holiday so this event is right up my alley.

I’ve always been a hopeless romantic and “Crashing Through the Snow,” starring Amy Acker and Warren Christie, is about a couple named Maggie and Sam who are crashing Christmas together. They team up, after he proposes to her, to tag team against Sam’s sister’s perfect Christmas. However, neither one of them are prepared to deal with the challenges that are posed by their blended families. I can’t wait to see what lies ahead for Maggie and Sam! Many of you who are long-time readers of Tough Cookie Mommy know that I originally began this blog after being diagnosed with leukemia. The diagnosis literally rocked my whole world as a young mother with a toddler and a newborn baby and I just needed a place where I could vent and share my emotions whenever I was feeling overwhelmed. I had no idea then that I would be telling my story to other women and families so many years later. And with September being Blood Cancer Awareness Month, I feel it’s more important than ever to share my story.

My journey began in 2007, shortly after the birth of my youngest son. I had a routine follow-up visit with my doctor and she noticed that my White Blood Cells (WBCs) were kind of high after she reviewed my bloodwork. She discussed with me that, although it was probably nothing, she wanted me to see a hematologist just to make sure that nothing else was going on with me. She explained that a young woman in her childbearing years shouldn’t have such a high WBC count and that she wanted to err on the side of caution. I can still remember feeling worried but not really thinking that anything would come of this since I was in my early thirties and felt as healthy as a horse.

After meeting with the hematologist and running additional tests, I made an appointment to discuss the results with the doctor. I can still remember everything about that moment when he walked into the examination room and told me that I had leukemia. It felt like he had hit me in the side of the head with a sledgehammer. That’s the only thing that I could compare it to because it was such a shocking moment. He must have sensed how distraught I felt because he immediately explained to me that there was treatment for the kind of leukemia that I have. I recall responding that I needed to live long enough to see my sons graduate from high school. He smiled and reassured me. I will always be grateful to him for his comforting words and his caring bedside manner. 

Here we are, almost fourteen years later, and I am proud to say that I am living with leukemia as a chronic medical condition. It’s a serious condition and I take advocating for my health care very seriously but, instead of sitting in the passenger’s seat of the proverbial car that is my life, leukemia takes a back seat to living my life and enjoying my children and my loved ones. Having that wide net of support when you are a Survivor really enriches your life and makes you feel like you are not alone throughout your journey.
