What inspired you to pursue jewelry design and start your own line?

As my mother says I have always been drawn to beautiful things. I used to attend auctions and estate sales with my mom when I was young and I started collecting estate jewelry at a very young age. By the time I was 12 years old I was featured on television on an Arts and Collectables program showing my collection of estate jewelry. I decided to start my own line after working in corporate retail and having other buyers in the industry ask me about the jewelry I wore. I realized I could pursue a passion and create a business that I knew and understood innately.

Describe your design process.

My inspiration truly comes in many forms. I enjoy architecture, art, antiquities and nature. There is a lot of historical influence in my designs whether it be the history of a stone, a time period or genre. Because I do use ancient coins and artifacts as well as precious and semi precious stones I want to let them speak for themselves within the designs. I often sit with the items for awhile and manifest the best way to highlight each in an organic way.

Is your design process the same whether you are designing fashion versus bridal?

The design process is similar with bridal and fashion; however with bridal I think about the type of bride that would be attracted to the cut of the diamonds that I am working with. My goal is to create an engagement ring that the bride will want to pass down as an heirloom in her family. We only use high quality cut, color and clarity in our bridal jewelry; whereas with fashion I don't always have an exact client in mind. We also work with very high quality stones but will incorporate raw and rough cut gems into the collections giving them an old world feel.

Describe the Thalia woman.

What is your favorite part of being a jewelry designer?

My favorite part of being a jewelry designer is creating beautiful jewelry that people will cherish for generations. I also think it is important for my two daughters to see their mom be a strong, successful business woman.

Are you more of a ring, earring, necklace or bracelet person? Why?

All of the above. But if I have to choose one it would be rings. I love to stack rings and change the look of a ring simply by adding bands. Or, of course, there's always the knockout statement ring.

What is next for Thalia Jewelry?

We will continue to expand our bridal. We will also be incorporating more men's jewelry including wedding bands and cuff links. Right now we do them generally by special order but we plan on doing a full line of cuff links.

Q&A with Priyanka Murthy, Head Designer & Founder of Arya Esha

What inspired you to leave the field of law and pursue a career in jewelry design?

I’m a total law nerd; I love the law. But I found that the practice of law did not fulfill the creative side I always had. And the older I got, the more my creative side wanted to be freed. I’ve designed jewelry as a hobby for years. Two years ago I realized that I could make a living, even build a business from designing jewelry, so I took the plunge.

Describe your design process. Where do you find inspiration?

As a former lawyer, I’m inspired by theories I’ve learned over the years and I remember where I was when the idea or concept came to me, and what my surrounding looked like. So, the sketch of a piece of jewelry is my recollection of the idea meeting the surroundings. I start with three or four anchor designs, and then design the rest of the collection around those anchors. My pieces are handmade by artisans in India. The best jewelry artisans in India come from the same region of India as I, Bengal. I go to India for the production, and I speak to them in my mother tongue Bengali. They are amazing, and I enjoy working with them.

How does your past legal career benefit you as a business owner?
There is certainly a benefit to having a legal background. There are practical benefits like being able to negotiate, draft, and comprehend contracts, file for trademark, etc. I’ve saved money handling my own legal work. Also, my legal education taught me to analyze issues and concepts deeply and quickly. I find myself applying this skill to my business – I frequently assess my successes and challenges and use the analysis to make business decisions.

What do you enjoy most about designing jewelry and running your own business?

I have found that as a business owner working for myself I work more hours than I did as a lawyer working for someone else, but I don’t feel “overworked.” I guess it is because it is my own business, and I can be flexible about when, where, and how I work. That’s the best part about running my own business. As far as designing jewelry, the best part is knowing that my work has a built in “happiness component.” Jewelry makes people happy, and I love designing something that facilitates happy moments. Just the other day I heard from a husband who presented his wife with one of my pieces. He described how she cried tears of joy when he gave her the piece! It’s a great feeling.

Who is the Arya Esha woman?

Arya Esha pieces are inspired by and reflect the woman they are designed for – she, like the pieces, is sophisticated and classy with a dash of rebellion.

What is next for Arya Esha?

So far Arya Esha has been all about gemstone jewelry, which we’ll continue to design and craft. But the exciting news is that we are developing a diamond and gold line with the similar aesthetic to the gemstone pieces in our Galaxy Collection. So expect to see earrings, rings, necklaces, and bracelets with delicate strands of diamond-studded “orbits,” “waves,” “cages, ”or “domes” wrapped around gold geometric shapes.

I am thrilled to feature Stephanie Gottlieb today on Juler's Row. I love her style and am always drooling over her Instagram feed. Not only is she an extremely talented designer, but Stephanie also runs her own store that showcases some of my favorite designers.

Q&A with Stephanie Gottlieb, Owner of Stephanie Gottlieb & Designer of SG Fine

What pieces make up your daily uniform of jewelry?

My daily jewelry uniform would be my engagement ring with two stack bands, my eternity band that my husband gave me for our one year anniversary, my Cartier Love and Juste un Clou bracelets, a watch (I rotate) and my diamond studs. These are the pieces I cant leave the house without, and then I add in other stack rings, necklace layers, and ear cuffs to change things up. Lately I’ve been really into my rainbow sapphire stack bands, and this fun 18K Rose Gold wire ring.

What inspired you to open your boutique and start your collection, SG Fine?

I always knew that one day I wanted to run my own business, I just didn’t know that it would happen so soon in my career. But after five years of learning the ins-and-outs of the jewelry business from a wholesale perspective, I really felt ready to start my own company. It took awhile to become what it is today, which is a successful online jewelry store, one-on-one appointments in NYC with a growing private clientele, and a jewelry line that basically fills in the gaps for jewelry I want to own but cant find.

Where do you find inspiration for your collection, SG Fine?

My first design, my Ray Bar Ring, was inspired by a vintage pin my grandmother had. It was a long bar of round diamonds pave set that she wore vertically on her lapel. I always admired it and thought the design would make a really cool ring. When I went to create the actual piece, I had recently seen a layout of baguettes, and I just thought it would be a cool interpretation of that pin. From there, I started playing with the bar piece and reimagining it in different ways; a bar necklace, a lariat with tiny baguette drop, a wide band with single baguette adornment.

Describe your design process.

I am the first to admit that I have zero technical skills when it comes to designing jewelry. I cannot sketch for the life of me, despite having super talented family members who are very artistic. I imagine things in my head and I basically cut and paste on the computer (in Microsoft Word of all programs) using shapes and lines to “draft” a concept. I then work closely with my jeweler to implement the design. Sometimes my imagination doesn’t quite translate into a successful piece of jewelry, so my process is definitely a work in progress. I hope to have time in the next few years to take some jewelry making classes to learn more.

Describe the Stephanie Gottlieb woman.

The Stephanie Gottlieb woman is someone who appreciates the classics with a modern twist. Trendy jewelry is fun, but I always encourage my young clients who are building a jewelry “wardrobe” to start with classic items that they will love and wear forever. Once you have the classics, I love layering and stacking in trendy pieces!

What is your favorite part of working in the jewelry industry?

Aside from trying on beautiful and sparkly things on a daily basis, I love working directly with a client to pick out and design an engagement ring. There is nothing more special than being intimately involved in the engagement process, and it is so rewarding when a bride calls or writes a note after she gets engaged to thank me. My engagement ring is my favorite piece of jewelry I’ve ever owned, and I think most women feel that way, so to be associated with that is really gratifying.

My sister-in-law tagged me in a photo of the Georges Hobeika Spring-Summer 2016 Couture Runway Show on Instagram, introducing me to this incredible designer. Not only do I love the clothes, but also the jewelry and accessories worn in the show. The gowns are absolutely fabulous, it would be an honor to wear something that beautiful. Typically when I look at a collection of jewelry I quickly make a list of my favorite pieces and which would be first on my list to purchase. After looking at Shadowplay™ by Gabriel & Co., I realized I want every piece in this collection. Shadowplay™ features sterling silver and candlelight diamonds with a black rhodium/oxidization finish where the diamonds are set. The dark background really allows the diamonds to pop and grab your attention. The pieces are really versatile and will add a little edge to any look. The price points are very reasonable, with pieces starting just below $100.

Stacey Fay Designs

Explain the two parts of Stacey Fay Designs and how they work together. Which started first?

Stacey Fay Designs brings to life the jewelry of decades past, through a vintage inspired handmade line, as well as the sale of genuine vintage and antiques. It all started with the handmade jewelry—pieces made from recycled metals and using vintage materials. Soon after launching that side of the business, however, my long-held love for vintage shopping starting calling me. I saw that several other jewelry designers were combining handmade designs with vintage and antique resale, and I knew immediately I wanted to do the same. The combination allows me to get creative with my hands, while also satiating my love for antiques and design. When I get fatigued from one, I move on to the other!

While the two sides of the business run in parallel—my handmade jewelry is sold on my own website and in stores, and the vintage/antique jewelry is sold on Etsy—one is constantly influencing the other. In particular, antique pieces I see or purchase will often influence my jewelry designs, as has certainly been the case for the necklaces I make using antique wax seal stamps. There is customer overlap too; people who appreciate the aesthetic of the handmade line often wear antique or vintage jewelry, and vice versa.

Where do you find inspiration?

Travel has always been a big source of inspiration for me, and in fact France and French culture was the original spark—I launched Stacey Fay Designs soon after my first trip to France for my honeymoon! From its classic and iconic fashion, to the food, and the beauty that is everywhere from the streets of Paris to the countryside of Provence, it pulses with a creative energy. Ireland is similarly inspiring, albeit in a different way. There, it’s the ruggedness, vibrant colors in the natural world, music, and people which provide so many ideas.

Of course, many, many ideas come from classic media—old movies, vintage magazines and photos, old music, and aged books. I just adore vintage fashion, and seeing the trends that evolved from decade to decade. I am also fascinated with the history and story of jewelry across time, particularly the Victorian mourning jewelry period. At that time, jewelry was seen as so much more than just something decorative—it was powerful and incredibly meaningful. That’s the type of energy I aim to bring into every aspect of my business.

Describe your design process.

My design process is a bit chaotic! I am not the type of designer to draw first and craft an item from there, although that occasionally happens. My designs typically come spur of the moment; my mood, energy and current obsessions directly influence what I make on that day. I may start a design simply by scanning the thousands of beads and materials I have and seeing what speaks to me—what colors, what shapes, and what pairings, and then take it from there. Sometimes I work backwards from a vintage or antique piece that is broken , and see what I can recreate from it. My designs are often limited by what is available—with the wax seal necklaces, for instance, the stamps are very rare and very unique, so my next design may pop up suddenly when I find an unexpected antique stamp on Ebay!

What do you love most about designing and making jewelry?

What I love most is being able to impact people’s lives. It was always my original intention; I had a desire to create jewelry with meaning, much like what was done throughout history. I’m fortunate that this has happened, through many sentimental custom orders, and people who wear my wax seal necklaces as everyday talismans. Of course, I also have people who proposed to the love of their life with my antique engagement rings! That’s pretty amazing.

What is next for Stacey Fay Designs?

There are so many big dreams for the business! My own mourning jewelry line is at the top of the list, as well as handmade rings using antique diamonds and precious stones. I will also do my first styled photo shoot with my jewelry in the next few months! The sky is the limit.

Happy Monday! I love starting the week off with a fabulous Q&A post. I am honored to feature Zoë Chicco on the blog today and her amazing jewelry and story. Zoë is unique because she is a trained goldsmith who finds inspiration from her surroundings and friends. Her jewelry features 14K gold, oxidized sterling silver, diamonds and semi-precious stones. Zoë Chicco Jewelry has a large celebrity following and her jewelry is sold in over 100 stores across the U.S. and internationally, as well as Neiman Marcus.

What pieces make up your daily uniform of jewelry?

I think of my everyday jewelry as minimal…but when you line it all up, maybe not so much? Most of the pieces have some sort of sentimental value. I wear stacks of 4 rings on each ring finger – which includes my engagement and wedding rings, a bezel set eternity band my husband made for our 10 year anniversary and a little rose gold ring that says “TRU” on it that my besties at Workhorse Jewelry gave me when my son Truman was born. I wear a signet ring on my pinky with a K engraved on it for my late dog, Kaya. On my left wrist I wear my watch and a Cartier love bracelet (not pictured) that my husband gave me when our son was born. On my right wrist I wear a stack of 5 of my favorite mixed gold and diamond cuffs. In my ears I wear a pyramid spike ear shield in one ear and a diamond shaped stud and arrowhead stud charm with diamonds in the other. Typically I layer 2 necklaces – a pave diamond “T” shield necklace to represent my husband, Tim and a dog tag necklace with my son's name, birthday and the coordinates where he was born. Not too much, right??

Describe what a typical day in the life of Zoë Chicco is like.

Typically I wake up to the sound of my little boy starting to stir in his crib. I get up and cuddle with him for a bit then head into the kitchen to make breakfast for us. One of the best things about working for yourself is making your own schedule. I spend quality time with my son every morning which I treasure. Once our nanny arrives, I tend to answer any pressing emails, as once I get into the office other things always come up that need my attention. Once I feel I have gotten through the most pressing things, I head to the office in downtown LA typically around 11am. There I meet with my sales and production teams to go over anything that needs my attention. While occasionally I have a lunch meeting that gets me out of the office, most days I just eat lunch at my desk. If all goes well I will have time in the afternoon to focus on what I enjoy the most, which is designing new pieces. I try to be home by 6:30 at the latest to hang out with Truman and have dinner together as a family before getting him down for bed. Then we start all over again….

How does your experience working at the bench influence your design process?

It greatly influences my design process. For the longest time I would only design within the parameters of my skill set. If I couldn’t make it from scratch myself, I wouldn’t design it. For the most part I still design that way. It wasn’t until my husband, Tim, who is a mechanical engineer by trade, started working with me that I started to think outside my box a little bit. I am able to sketch things that he can model 3 dimensionally. Then we have samples printed in wax that we cast. It is really exciting to be able to work this way, but after 10+ years of doing it my way, it still is difficult sometimes for me to open my mind to it. But I have started to branch out…a little.

Describe your design process, do you like to sketch or do you go right into working with metal?

I always do a very rudimentary sketch of an idea. But in terms of how the piece comes together, that very much depends on what happens once I start to make it in metal. You can’t necessarily tell ahead of time how something is going to feel on, or how it is going to work, or hang. So my sketches are just ideas for the most part. The real design happens once I start working in metal.

What do you enjoy most about being a jewelry designer and business owner?

It is very satisfying to have your own business. I still get excited every time we get a great new account or I see a celebrity wearing my jewelry, or even get an email from a very happy customer. It is all extremely rewarding. I really enjoy the flexibility of being able to make my own hours and schedule (especially when you have a toddler!). I know I am very lucky to be able to make a living doing something that I love to do.

Describe the Zoë Chicco woman.

Oh she could be anyone! That is one of the things I strive to deliver – timeless pieces that appeal to all different kinds of women. I try to offer something for everyone, whether she is classic or edgy, young or more mature.

What is next for Zoë Chicco?

We are working on some collaborations -which is exciting. And we have been attending Paris Fashion Week to work on expanding our international business as well (and it doesn’t hurt to have an excuse to go to Paris!).

Rahaminov Diamonds

When walking a jewelry show, you get the chance to see some spectacular jewelry. One booth that I can never walk by without drooling is Rahaminov Diamonds. Their jewelry is absolutely spectacular with the most magnificent stones that are enhanced by brilliant construction and design. When you pick up a piece by Rahaminov you can see and feel the thought and skill that went into the design and fabrication.

Rahaminov Diamonds started when Moshe Rahaminov and his brother, who both had a natural talent for cutting diamonds, moved to Valenza Po, Italy hoping to use their skills within the Italian Jewelry Industry. The brothers quickly received recognition for their talent of the finest cut stones and exceptional customer service.

In 1989 Moshe Rahaminov's daughter, Tamara, a Graduate Gemologist that was raised learning the family business, opened a Los Angeles office of Rahaminov Diamonds with her husband, Amir. Tamara and Amir met while attending the Gemological Institute of America and each brought unique skills to the business. Wrist Wednesday: Van Cleef & Arpels at Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie Genève

From January 22nd-28th, Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie Genève (SIHH) takes place in Geneva, Switzerland. It is an exclusive trade show with fifteen watch brands; a favorite of mine is Van Cleef & Arpels. Their Poetic Movements are enchanting, whimsical and inspire joy to those that see or have the pleasure of wearing one. Below is a look at their booth and some new watches that Van Cleef & Arpels showcased at SIHH.

Looking back on it, 2015 was a very exciting year for me and I am so excited for what 2016 has in store. My sister and I started a new line of fine jewelry called, Katherine & Josephine, named after our grandmothers. I introduced it to Juler's Row readers a couple months back when I highlighted our first trunk show in Chicago.

I wanted to share again and touch on a favorite style from our collection. Katherine & Josephine was inspired by my love of bracelets, which led me to design of series of satin straps with precious metal and stone elements. The straps come in two lengths and the longer version can easily be worn as a double wrap bracelet or choker. I love wearing our straps as a choker and often find I like to keep it very simple with a black strap and our #0 Signature Buckle in yellow gold (see below). I love having the opportunity to wear my jewelry in more than one way and switch out slides depending on the look I am going for.

The collection is primarily composed of 14 karat gold, available in yellow, white or rose. We also have a vast selection of other pieces, including cuff & link bracelets, necklaces, earrings and rings.
