De Groene Rekenkamer - oude wijn in nieuwe zakken

De Groene Rekenkamer is een organisatie die zichzelf onterecht een onafhankelijke kritische auditor van ecologisch getinte onderwerpen noemt, maar in realiteit een organisatie is die vooral overal tegen is, omdat het niet past binnen een politieke ideologie. De organisatie heeft een lange geschiedenis van het publiceren van ronduit belabberde wetenschappelijke onzin (één voorbeeld uit een lange reeks),

De Groene Rekenkamer lanceerde recent een nieuwe website. Tijd om eens te kijken of dit betekent of de organisatie ondertussen al wat meer kaas heeft gegeten van wetenschap.

De nieuwe website oogt visueel beter. Maar daar houdt het goede nieuws helaas meteen op.
De sectie over klimaat toont vooral nog steeds aan dat De Groene Rekenkamer nog steeds geen ernstig
verhaal weet te brengen. Laten we eens een snelle blik werpen op de klimaatpagina's:

Invloed van de zon
Op talloze pseudoskeptische websites tracht men de invloed van de zon op het klimaat te overroepen. Dat er een invloed is, is nogal evident (duh), maar de meetgegevens tonen aan dat de zon de afgelopen 50 jaar vooral redelijk stabiel is geweest, terwijl de temperatuur op aarde in dezelfde periode toenam
eerst toont De Groene Rekenkamer een grafiek die het aantal zonnevlekken toont. Er is echter iets merkwaardigs aan de hand.

Hieronder presenteer ik eerst de grafiek met het aantal sunspots tot 2010, en erna de grafiek op de site van De Groene Rekenkamer.

En de grafiek van De Groene Rekenkamer:

Merk op hoe de gafiek op De Groene Rekenkamer stopt omstreeks 1950, zodat de indruk gewekt wordt dat de zonne-activiteit de afgelopen tijden enkel maar toenam. De daling van na 1950 wordt "verzwegen". Dit is een schoolvoorbeeld van een cherrypick : een deel van de data wordt bewust achtergehouden om een misleidend beeld op te wekken. Dat is niet erg netjes.

Vervolgens post de Groene Rekenkamer een grafiek die een verder rechtstreeks sterk verband moet suggereren tussen de zonne-activiteit en de temperatuur.

De juiste vergelijking tussen beiden wordt weergegeven in de eerste onderstaande figuur (bron: skeptical science):

In plaats van dit globaal beeld te presenteren, tracht De Groene Rekenkamer een andere indruk te wekken door middel van een grafiek afkomstig van Willie Soon, een man met een bedenkelijke reputatie op het creëren van misleidende wetenschappelijke nonsens.

De eerste grafiek hierboven vergelijkt de invloed van de zon en de temperatuur op aarde.
De grafiek van Soon vergelijk de invloed van de zon op het temperatuursgradiënt tussen noordpool en evenaar. En zegt niets over de relatie tussen de gemiddelde temperatuur en aarde en de zon.
Weerom wordt getracht een misleidend beeld op te roepen.

Klimaatgevoeligheid
De Groene Rekenkamer betwist dat de klimaatgevoeligheid en verwerpt de gevestigde orde door het citeren van één paper, zonder aan te halen waar de andere studies foutief zouden zijn.

De paper (On the Misdiagnosis of Surface Temperature Feedbacks from Variations in Earth’s Radiant Energy Balance) van Spencer en Braswell was zo ondermaats dat dat hij nooit gepubliceerd had mogen worden. Wat editor-in-chief Wolfgang Wagner ook erkende, waarop hij prompt zijn ontslag indiende. Wagner schreef:

Peer-reviewed journals are a pillar of modern science. Their aim is to achieve highest scientific standards by carrying out a rigorous peer review that is, as a minimum requirement, supposed to be able to identify fundamental methodological errors or false claims. Unfortunately, as many climate researchers and engaged observers of the climate change debate pointed out in various internet discussion fora, the paper by Spencer and Braswell [1] that was recently published in Remote Sensing is most likely problematic in both aspects and should therefore not have been published.
After having become aware of the situation, and studying the various pro and contra arguments, I agree with the critics of the paper. Therefore, I would like to take the responsibility for this editorial decision and, as a result, step down as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Remote Sensing.

Hij vervolgt:

With this step I would also like to personally protest against how the authors and like-minded climate sceptics have much exaggerated the paper's conclusions in public statements, e.g., in a press release of The University of Alabama in Huntsville from 27 July 2011, the main author's personal homepage, the story "New NASA data blow gaping hole in global warming alarmism" published by Forbes, and the story "Does NASA data show global warming lost in space?" published by Fox News, to name just a few.

Uiteraard vertelt De Groene Rekenkamer de kritiek op de paper er niet bij.

De conclusie is duidelijk: de vernieuwde website van de Groene Rekenkamer bestaat uit oude wijn in nieuwe zakken. Voor accurate informatie over klimaatwetenschap moet je echter nog steeds niet bij deze lobbygroep zijn.

Niet verwonderlijk, omdat De Groene Rekenkamer nog steeds een organisatie is die vooral tracht wetenschap te politiseren. De oude website bevatte niet toevallig volgende passage:

Belgian climate pseudo skeptics address ten issues, score zero goals. Or how to disagree with yourself !

The global warming policy foundation, a British astroturf group unwilling to disclose its funding, published an article of four Belgian climate pseudo-skeptics: Istvàn Marko, Alain Préat, Samuele Furfari and Henri Masson.

The article starts with complaining they don’t get the attention they want in the very biased media.
There are lot of internetsites full of climate skepticism, but in the scientific press this skepticism evaporates:

Research has shown there is a strong misrepresentation in the media. But not in the way the gang of four claims, contrary: pseudo skeptics receive much more media-attention than they deserve !

The number of peer review articles related to climate change written by the four Belgians: exactly zero.

If they want more media attention, there’s a solution: maybe they might start with … contributing to this scientific topic. Giving a presentation is not enough to do science. Especially when the presentation is very substandard

Their GWPF-article continues with ten points of which they claim they rebut climate science. This is not true, and actually the ten points are often the opposite of what the very same people said elsewhere. yes you read it right: they themselves have rebutted several of the ten points of 'evidence' they present.

Check this out:

1. The climate has always changed. This was true during ancient times and it has also been true since the beginning of the modern era. These climate changes have always been, and still are, independent of the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere;

A rather strange point if you ask me, as nobody claims it never changed. And an incorrect one. There are several reasons why climate can change (Milankovic cycles p.ex.), but CO2 always has been one of the components influencing earth's temperature. Of course it has, physical laws have been the same back then as.

The Vostok ice-cores clearly show that, contrary to what they write, in the past there *has* been a correlation between CO2 and temperature.

Actually, in the same text, they do refer to this Vostok-core. So they are aware themselves there's a correlation between CO2 and earth's climate. So their 10 points aren't very consistent...

Remarkably, Istvàn Marko agrees CO₂ is a greenhouse gas: "Le CO_² est considéré comme étant l’un des principaux responsables de l’effet de serre et il est impératif de réduire sa concentration dans l’air."

In English: ”CO₂ is considered to be one of the main causes of the greenhouse effect and it's absolute necessary to reduce the atmospheric concentrations of CO₂".

In other words: Marko himself disagrees with the GWPF-text he signed.

2. During Roman times and the Middle Ages temperatures were observed well in excess of those currently experienced. From the 16th till the 19th century a cold period referred to as the “Little Ice Age” predominated. All these changes took place without mankind being held responsible. We believe that the increase in temperatures that occurred during a certain part of the 20th century is the result of a recovery from this cold period. These various events can be explained by a combination of warm and cold cycles of different magnitudes and duration. Why and how this happens is not yet fully understood, but some plausible explanations can be put forward;

This a non sequitur. A non-influence in the past, doesn't automatically mean present day climate cannot be influenced by mankind.

A nice analogy is the forest-fire one: even though this kind of fires occurs naturally, this does not imply a pyromaniac cannot burn down a forest.

Earth's atmosphere contained no free oxygen during the first billion years or so. Free oxygen only emerged in the atmosphere as a *result* of ....life on earth ! That's how dramatic the influence of life can be on our planet's atmosphere.

If we look at the anthropogenic impact on the atmosphere, we see that, just like other species have done before, we are altering earth's atmosphere:

The graph clearly demonstrates man *significantly* altered the concentration of several greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere.

3. The so-called “abnormally rapid” increase in global temperatures between 1980 and 2000 is not unusual at all. There have in fact been several such periods in the past, during which temperatures rose in a similar manner and at comparable rates, even though fossil fuels were not yet in use;

A non sequitur similar as the one above. The pyrmonaniac still burned down the forest.

4. Temperature measurements do not necessarily correlate with a building up or a decrease in heat since heat variations are energy changes subject to thermal inertia. Apart from heat many other parameters have an influence on temperature. Moreover the measurement of temperatures is subject to numerous large errors. When the magnitude and plurality of these measurement errors are taken into account, the reported increase in temperatures is no longer statistically significant;

Oddy Alain Préat stated the following in this presentation (p. 37):

"Réchaufement modeste mais INDISCUTABLE de 0,4 à 0,6 °C depuis le début du XXème siècle"

Or in English: "there's a small but INDISPUTABLE heating (his emphasis !!!!) of 0,4 to 0,6 °C since the beginning of the 20th century".

Again, one of the authors disagrees with what's written in the GWPF-article....

5. The famous “Hockey-stick” curve, known as the Mann’s curve and presented six times by the IPCC in its penultimate report, is the result among other things of a mistake in the statistical calculations and an incorrect choice of temperature indicators, i.e. proxies. This lack of scientific rigour has totally discredited the curve and it was withdrawn, without any explanation, from subsequent IPCC reports;

There have been several temperature reconstructions since the original MBH99 paper, demonstrating the original paper, even though there were some statistical flaws, wasn't all that bad.
Do notice the conspiracy theory they launch between the lines stating 'withdrawn, without any explanation'.

Scientific knowledge increases, and it's just normal new reports look at the newest scientific body of evidence. This is the way it should.

On top of that, the statement is completely false, the AR4 clearly and explicitly discusses the problems with MBH99. On top of that the graph is still there. So apparently, none of the four authors actually read the IPCC report they are criticizing ?

Do have a look at the graph presented in the AR4. Are you able to spot the MBH99 one without looking at the legend ?

6. Even though they look formidably complex, the theoretical models employed by the climate modellers are simplified to the extreme. In fact there are far too many (known and unknown) parameters that influence climate change. At the moment it is impossible to take them all into account. The climate system is extremely complex, containing not only chaotic components but also numerous positive and negative feedback loops operating according to various different time scales. Which is why the IPCC wrote in its reports that: “…long-term prediction of future climate states is not possible” (page 774, Third report). This is very true. To this day all the climate predictions based upon these models have turned out to be totally incorrect. Strangely, nobody seems to care;

They seem to be a bit confused here: the quote they use clearly says "climate states". And while yes this increases uncertainty (hey, no one ever said climate models are perfect) as there are feedback processes, this does not mean as they want to try to suggest, that it is impossible to make any predictions of the future.

Saying climate predictions based on models are totally incorrect is a false statement, as this skeptical science post demonstrates:

The AR4 comes to this conclusion on the reliability of climate models:
"In summary, confidence in models comes from their physical basis, and their skill in representing observed climate and past climate changes. Models have proven to be extremely important tools for simulating and understanding climate, and there is considerable confidence that they are able to provide credible quantitative estimates of future climate change, particularly at larger scales. Models continue to have significant limitations, such as in their representation of clouds, which lead to uncertainties in the magnitude and timing, as well as regional details, of predicted climate change. Nevertheless, over several decades of model development, they have consistently provided a robust and unambiguous picture of significant climate warming in response to increasing greenhouse gases."

7. The relationship between CO2 and temperature, obtained from the Vostok ice cores, shows that a building up of CO2 occurs 800 to 1000 years after an increase in temperature is observed. Hence the increase in the concentration of CO2 is a consequence of the warming of the climate, not its cause;

Ah, another non sequitur. And one that is perfectly explained here

8. But the coup de grâce to the “warmists’ theory” – certainly not yet visible in the French and Belgian media – comes from the observation that for the past fifteen years or so the global temperature of the Earth has remained constant. During the same period CO2 emissions have increased by far more than in the past, reaching an unparalleled record this year. Honest climate scientists admit that this observation is an embarrassing inconvenience for their theory. However, attempts to make us believe that the Earth is continuing to warm up persist. Will we have to wait for another twenty, twenty-five or thirty years for the global warming advocates to finally admit that there is no unambiguous correlation between the global temperature of the Earth and human-generated CO2 emissions?

There's a lot of noise on a temperature, that's why you cannot use short terms to say *anything* about climate.

The WMO defines climate as the weather averaged over a 30 year period. Not shorter.
Alain Préat is aware of this: "Le climat est défini comme l’état moyen, sur une période d’au moins 30 ans" so it's a mystery why he is using a time period he knows to be too short.

On short time intervals other factors can mask the influence of the rise due to CO2. Especially the ENSO-phenomena, having a large influence on the distribution of the heat content between surface and
ocean.

The four authors do acknowledge there are several components influencing temperatures in their 4th point, so they should be aware it's not very useful to talk about the influence of CO2 on such a short time scale. So in my opinion, again, they are not being very consistent.

When we look at both surface and ocean, it's clear there's no pause in the warming of the earth.

9. The claim that Hurricane Sandy is due to human CO2 emissions is totally unfounded and has been vigorously contested by numerous meteorologists. This regrettable distortion of the facts has been denounced in an open letter, addressed to the General Secretary of the UN and signed by more than 130 world-renowned scientists, including one of the present authors;

It's impossible to attribute a single extreme weather event to climate change. So attributing Sandy to global warming is nonsense.

Nevertheless predictions are there will be more severe storms, so more storms *like* Sandy.

10. Finally the “abnormal” melting of the Arctic Sea ice, that made the headlines of numerous journals during this summer, was also observed during previous decades. Amazingly the record high increase in Antarctic Sea ice that occurred at exactly the same time has been completely ignored by the very same media. Moreover, no mention has been made of the current, particularly rapid, regeneration of the Arctic Sea ice.

I'm really not sure what rapid regeneration they are talking about... Once again, one of the four authors is debunking the GWPF-article. Unless they mean ice is growing in winter. Of course it is.

My conclusion is that the ten points they raise do not rebut climate science at all. And remarkably they often are in conflict with what the authors themselves said elsewhere. Implying there’s an odd and strong inconsistency in the entire article they’ve written for the GWPF.

Een koude winter ?

Nog al te vaak zie je mensen stellig beweren dat de opwarming van onze planeet moeilijk te verzoenen valt met de koude temperaturen die West-Europa afgelopen winter kende.
Nu is de planeet natuurlijk net dat tikkeltje groter dan enkel West-Europa, daarom kan het eens nuttig zijn te bekijken hoe de temperatuur de afgelopen maanden eigenlijk lagen ten opzichte van het gemiddelde:

De gegevens van NOAA maken het duidelijk: de koude in januari en februari was een lokààl fenomeen.
Wordt naar de mondiale gegevens gekeken, dan blijkt dat de zogenaamd koude februarimaand, in realiteit de 9de warmste februarimaand was sinds het begin van de metingen.
Dat is dan ook weer duidelijk.
Overigens zou de koude West-Europese winter paradoxaal genoeg wel eens een direct gevolg kunnen zijn van de smelt van arctisch ijs ten gevolge van … de opwarming van onze planeet.

James Delingpole: ‘Hanging is far too good for such ineffable toerags’

James Delingpole, the libertarian columnist of The Telegraph has searched, and found, for a new low in the climate change debate in his latest column in which he expresses his hope that one day there will be a Climate Nurnberg trial, and that hanging is too good for climate scientists, as he doesn’t want them to be granted the mercy of a quick relief.
No, he doesn’t want the trial because the scientific world is wrong, but simply because, at least in Delingpole’s head, it’s perfectly OK to sue the people if their research results don’t say what you like to hear. metaphorically of course.

Do remember, in an interview Delingpole had to admit he himself doesn't have any scientific understanding, so his rant isn’t about science.

I could continue this post with looking closer at what’s wrong with Delingpole’s piece, but Joe Romm already did a good job.
So I’ll stick to waiting for the reaction of the climate skeptic community. Wonder what they think of Delingpole’s column.

Papers bekritiseren die je niet eens gelezen hebt, Rypke Zeilmaker en Hans Labohm style

Recent ging er heel wat aandacht naar de paper A Reconstruction of Regional and Global Temperature for the Past 11,300 Years van Marcott et al die in Science werd gepubliceerd.

In de paper werd door gebruik van proxies een temperatuurreconstructie gemaakt van de voorbije 11 300 jaar. Het resultaat is onderstaande grafiek.

Zoals te verwachten viel, werd de paper onmiddellijk zwaar bekritiseerd door pseudoskeptici. Niet zozeer omwille van wetenschappelijke gronden, maar omdat het resultaat van het onderzoek hen niet bevalt. De paper zou immers aantonen dat de temperaturen recent snel gestegen zijn. Wat overigens geen nieuws is natuurlijk.

Bij die stijging in bovenstaande grafiek moeten enige kanttekeningen geplaatst worden: het onderzoek gebeurde aan het de hand van proxies, d.w.z. indicatoren die verband houden met de temperaturen uit het verleden. Er waren immers in het verleden nog geen thermometers.

Een overzicht van de gebruikte proxies wordt weergegeven in de bijlagen van de paper.

De proxies beslaan niet het hele aardoppervlak, en uiteraard beslaan de individuele proxies ook niet de gehele tijdsspanne die wordt beschreven. Hierdoor zijn er uiteraard nog onzekerheidsmarges in de temperatuurreconstructie, maar desondanks vormt de reconstructie, de eerste in zijn soort die een dergelijke tijdsspannen beslaat, een behoorlijk accurate weergave van de temperaturen in het holoceen. De studie wijkt ook niet af van wat reeds bekend was.

De fuzz die in de blogosfeer is ontstaan gaat in wezen ook niet over de reconstrutie van de voorbije 11 000 jaar, maar concentreert zich voornamelijk op de sterke stijging op het eind van de grafiek, waarbij bv. Steve McIntyre zijn uiterste best doet verwarring te zaaien bij de leek.

De kritiek op dit deel van de grafiek moet echter juist gekaderd worden: ze vormt niet de kern van het onderzoek. Door het beperkt aantal proxies dat gebruikt werd voor het eind van de grafiek, is het resultaat niet incorrect zoals her en der wordt beweert, maar ook niet bijzonder standvastig. Iets waar de auteurs zich overigens van bewust zijn, en wat ze zelf ook duidelijk aangeven.

Erg relevant is die onzekerheid niet, omdat we van de laatste honderdvijftig jaar uiteraard niet enkel afhaneklijk zijn van proxie-studies, maar gewoon beschikken over thermometergegevens. En die geven ondubbelzinnig aan dat de aarde in rap tempo aan het opwarmen is.

Interessant is hoe een bepaalde hoek in de blogosfeer nou plotsklaps beweert dat de studie ‘frauduleus’ of op zijn minst ‘onwetenschappelijk’ zou zijn, omwille van de onzekerheid betreffende de stijging in het laatste deel van de grafiek. En waarbij pseudoskeptici claimen dat de auteurs dit zouden verzwegen hebben. Dit is een wel heel merkwaardige kritiek, omdat de auteurs die onzekerheid expliciet en ondubbelzinnig weergeven in hun paper:

However, considering the temporal resolution of our data set and the small number of records that cover this interval (Fig. 1G), this difference is probably not robust. Before this interval, the gap-filled and unfilled methods of calculating the stacks are nearly identical (Fig. 1D)

De conclusie is dan ook duidelijk; wie beweert dat de auteurs slecht werk hebben afgeleverd met betrekking tot het einddeel van de grafiek heeft…. de paper domweg nooit gelezen. Wat uiteraard te gek voor woorden is. Desondanks wordt de mythe over de ‘onjuistheid’ van het einddeel van de grafiek overal op het ineternet vlotjes gekopieerd. Waarbij schijnbaar niemand de moeite doet om te lezen wat er nou eigenlijk in de paper zelf staat geschreven.

Kijk je naar de Nederlandstalige blogosfeer, dan zie je bv. dat Rypke Zeilmaker en Hans Labohm die onjuiste gang van zaken netjes verder vertaald hebben uit het Engels. Zonder zich de moeite te getroosten te verfiëren of hun wilde beschuldigen ook maar ergens op stoelen. Ze leveren m.a.w. kritiek op een paper die ze niet eens gelezen hebben, en dat ze het houden op het overschrijven van onzin op Engelstalige blogs waar de juiste gang van zaken ver te zoeken is.

Met wetenschap heeft dat allemaal weinig te maken.

De eerste pseudoskeptische blog waarin wordt aangehaald dat de temperatuurreconstructies duidelijk aantonen dat de aarde afgelopen 150 jaar snel opwarmde moet ik overigens nog tegenkomen. Dat gegeven zou immers de ongefundeerde kritiek op Marcott et al. doen verdampen. Terwijl pseudoskeptici uiteraard net krampachtig trachten de realiteit te ontkennen dat de aarde opwarmt. Feiten zijn daarbij enkel maar een hinderlijke bijkomstigheid.

Dit blijkt ook uit de reacties onder de blogposts van Zeilmaker en Labohm: logischerwijze zou je kunnen verwachten dat deze auteurs hierom stevig bekritiseerd zouden worden omwille van hun onjuiste weergave van de paper. Het tegendeel is waar.

Climategate.nl heeft een systeem met duimpjes waarin een ‘waardering’ kan gegeven worden, en wat commentor Christo overkwam toen hij/zij de juiste gang van zaken weergaf zie je hieronder:

Uiteraard is er niet één vaste commentor die het een lor kan schelen dat Rypke Zeilmaker een paper aanvalt die hij niet eens gelezen heeft. Dat hebben ze zelf immers ook niet, en dat interesseert hun ook niet. Dat blog, net als het blog van Labohm, gaat immers niet om wetenschap, maar om het verwrongen wereldbeeld van de deelnemers, die overal complotten ontwaren.

Under the title ‘climate change, why such a heated debate’, the French part of the Belgian Royal Academy of Sciences recently organized a series of lectures by Belgian climate skeptics like Samuele Furfari, Alain Préat, Henri Masson and Istvan Marko.

The result, as could’ve been foreseen by the Academy, was a bunch of crap. Crap, crap, crap.

The series started with Samuel Furfari’s presentation quelles controverse?

Samuele Furfari is a high ranking official in the European Commission on energy issues and sustainable development.

He starts his lecture on climate change by stating Sustainable Development is not a scientific concept. Cute, but completely irrelevant for the physics of climate science. So it’s a bit bizarre he starts his lecture that way. Unless of course his “skepticism” is not about climate science at all…

Al Gore ate ice cream once.
Therefore global warming is a hoax.

His second slide features extremely important book The Lost History of Christianity: The Thousand-Year Golden Age of the Church in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia — and How It Died by Philip Jenkins. He goes on with the slogan by the Japanese Ice Cream Producer Lotte: “Eating ice cream wil decrease your body temperature temperature and wich is benificial for your body”. No, the lecture does not explain why this slogan has any scientific relevance.

De uitlopers van de motie Neppérus

Motie Neppérus

VVD-kamerlid Helma Neppérus verklaarde in 2010 in het Nederlandse parlement:

De VVD wil onafhankelijk onderzoek naar de opwarming van de aarde, nu ons land al weken in de ban is van de vrieskou. “We moeten weten hoe het echt zit, zeker met dit weer”, aldus VVD-Kamerlid Neppérus.

Neppérus kent zoals wel meer leken het verschil tussen 'weer' en 'klimaat' niet. Ze deed deze verklaring een maand na het climategate (non?)-schandaal, terwijl ook de tikfouten in het IPCC AR4-rapport in de media kwamen. Reden genoeg voor Neppérus om in het parlement een motie te vragen, en ook nog eens te krijgen, die een politieke bemoeienis in de wetenschap betracht die niet onmiddellijk tot voorbeeld strekt.

De motie had drie eisen:

dat de aanbevelingen van de IAC voortvarend worden uitgevoerd.
dat klimaatsceptici bij toekomstige rapporten van het Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) zullen worden betrokken.
te reageren op het verslag van een bijeenkomst georganiseerd door de Groene Rekenkamer over een brochure opgesteld door de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (KNAW).

De eerste opmerking betreft een procesmatige screening van het IAC over de werking van het IPCC, en bevat een aantal aanbevelingen om dit proces te verbeteren. Wat uiteraard lovenswaardig is.

De twee andere punten zijn echter een heel stuk problematischer. IPCC vat de peer review literatuur samen, en als er relevante sceptische wetenschap is of zou zijn, wordt die in de rapporten uiteraard meegenomen. Peer review is nog altijd de plek waar wetenschap wordt bedreven. Stellinkjes geponeerd op het internet vallen uitdrukkelijk niet onder wetenschap. Het pseudoskeptische geneuzel op heel wat blogs wordt daarom uiteraard, en volkomen terecht, niet weerhouden bij het opmaken van ernstige wetenschappelijke rapporten.

En daar zit net de knel: ofwel weten sceptici wetenschappelijk gefundeerde kritieken te produceren en worden ze reeds gehoord in het IPCC proces, ofwel publiceren ze niets, en is er geen wetenschappelijke grond om ze te horen. Immers, als ze hun internetstukjes hard zouden kunnen maken, zouden ze die ook tot in de peer review literatuur hard kunnen maken, quod non.

Merk ook op dat bij bv. scepticus Richard Lindzen, een van de weinige sceptici die ooit peer review klimaatliteratuur produceerden, een duidelijke discrepantie aanwezig is in zijn stukken. Er is een duidelijk verschil tussen zijn wetenschappelijk werk en zijn opniestukken. Hij schrijft talloze opiniestukjes waarin hij de klimaatwetenschap aanvalt, maar als je naar de peer review literatuur van zijn hand kijkt krijg je een heel ander beeld, en zorgt zijn werk absoluut niet voor het onderuithalen van de klimaatwetenschap en is zijn werk behoorlijk mainstream te noemen. Hij weet met andere woorden zijn harde taal in zijn opiniestukken niet te vertalen naar wetenschappelijke gefundeerde stellingen. Het blijft bij zéggen dat de klimaatwetenschap faalt, zonder daar wetenschappelijke onderbouwing voor te kunnen geven. En Lindzen is allesbehalve de enige scepticus bij wie dat proces opduikt.

Het ontbreken van wetenschappelijk onderbouwd klimaatscepticisme leidde dan ook niet-verrassend tot volgend antwoord van Joop Atsma op Neppérus' motie:

Het belangrijkste argument dat wordt gebruikt om geen aandacht te besteden in IPCC-rapporten aan de wetenschappelijke argumenten die sceptici gebruiken, is dat er geen peer-reviewde literatuur over beschikbaar is.

Of met andere woorden: dat er geen wetenschappelijk gefundeerde kritiek is die de grondslagen van de klimaatwetenschap onderuit haalt. Veel woorden hoeven er daarom verder niet aan vuil gemaakt te worden zou je daarom denken.

Merkwaardig is daarom het vervolg van Atsma's antwoord:

KNMI, ECN en PBL werken daarom samen aan een artikel dat de belangrijkste argumenten beschrijft en analyseert, en dat komende zomer zal verschijnen in een wetenschappelijk tijdschrift.

Kortom, Atsma geeft de vermelde instellingen de opdracht niet-wetenschappelijke stellingen samen te vatten en op de keper beschouwd bestaat de opdracht er dan ook uit aan te halen waarom ze niet meer wetenschappelijke aandacht krijgen. Een redelijk nutteloze opgave me dunkt. Immers, zoals hierboven aangehaald: als die sceptische stellingen hard te maken zouden zijn, zouden ze wel in de peer review literatuur verschijnen. Het niet-verschijnen in peer review literatuur houdt immers impliciet in dat de stellingen de wetenschappelijke toetsing niet doorstaan.

Atsma vervolgt:

Een Nederlandse scepticus is gevraagd substantieel tijd te besteden aan het leveren van commentaar op het komende IPCC-rapport over het klimaatsysteem (Werkgroep 1). Ik heb hem gevraagd te luisteren naar suggesties van andere sceptici.

Weerom een bijzonder opmerkelijke stelling. Zou een politicus ooit een astroloog aanstellen als evenwaardig partner in de sterrenkunde? Erg onwaarschijnlijk. Zou een politicus het ooit in zijn hoofd halen een creationist overheidsgeld toe te stoppen om de evolutietheorie te beoordelen? Dacht het niet.

Zou een politicus ooit een journalist zonder wetenschappelijke publicaties aanstellen om de klimaatwetenschap te beoordelen. Ja dus.

Die scepticus is Marcel Crok, een journalist die aan de klimaatoppervlakte verscheen toen hij in Natuurwetenschap & Techniek een artikel schreef over de hockeystick dat uit niet meer bestond dan het vertalen van het werk van McIntyre en McKitrick, zonder daarbij enige kritische noot te plaatsen. Crok verwarde toen reeds "tégen zijn" met "sceptisch zijn".

Enige jaren later was hij mede-oprichter van het vuilbekblog Climategate.nl, waar wetenschap verworpen wordt met rechts-libertarische kretologie die niet verder reikt dan de hele wetenschappelijke wereld communistisch te noemen. Iedere wetenschapper die zo naïef is te denken dat een beschaafd gesprek op die plek mogelijk is en een comment durft te posten op dat blog wordt enkel maar op een hoop gescheld onthaald. Het pleit allerminst voor Crok dat hij er niet in slaagt om dat soort niet-wetenschappelijk geblèr te onderscheiden van reëel sceptisch denken. En doet in ieder geval vragen rijzen over zijn wetenschappelijk beoordelingsvermogen.

Het derde punt uit de motie Neppérus is zo mogelijk nog problematischer. Om niet te zeggen onaanvaardbaar. Het betreft het ernstig nemen van het werk van de Groene Rekenkamer, een organisatie die zowat ieder milieu gerelateerd wetenschappelijk onderwerp verwerpt of minimaliseert omwille van politieke motieven. De Website van de Groene Rekenkamer maakt op dat vlak al enorm veel duidelijk:

Als De Groene Rekenkamer werkelijk een gezonde milieukritische organisatie zou zijn, zou dergelijke passage natuurlijk nooit of te nimmer op de website geplaatst worden. De Groene Rekenkamer politiseert de wetenschap, en verwerpt ze enkel en alleen omwille van politieke motieven.

De Groene Rekenkamer komt voor ieder milieugerelateerd onderwerp waar ze ook maar enigszins aan kon denken tot dezelfde conclusie: er is niets aan de hand en de overheid heeft geen reden om op te treden. Dat laatste is uiteraard de kern van het libertarisme, en de werkelijke reden voor het aanvallenvan de wetenschap. Bij de botsing van de ideologie met de realiteit, wordt de realiteit door De Groene Rekenkamer zonder aarzelen onder de bus gegooid.

Het niveau van de stukken op De Groene Rekenkamer is, ik druk me zacht uit, om te huilen. Ik heb op dit blog al eerder enkele ontstellend belabberberde stukken van die site behandeld (o.a. hier).

Opgemerkt kan worden dat Theo Richel zonder het zelf te beseffen in wezen zelf stelde dat de organisatie geen enkele wetenschappelijke relevantie heeft. Ja, nogmaals, dat is het niveau van die organisatie.

Dat een dergelijke organisatie door zoveel VVD-politici au sérieux wordt genomen is dan ook schrijnend.

Dat De Groene Rekenkamer ook de klimaatbrochure van de KNAW zou verwerpen is allerminst een verrassing, maar is net zoals de hele organisatie compleet irelevant. Ja ik ben me er van bewust dat voorgaande zin bij een buitenstaander tot gefrons zal leiden.

Gelukkig is het antwoord van Atsma bevredigend omdat hij hier wél stelt dat wetenschappelijke onafhankelijkheid niet beknot mag worden door politiek of een organisatie van pseudosceptici:

De KNAW is volledig autonoom en gaat zelf over z’n eigen publicaties. Dat is goed en moet ook beslist zo blijven.

Climate Dialogue

Atsma antwoordde in opvolging van de Motie Neppérus ook nog het volgende:

Ik heb het KNMI en PBL verzocht een inhoudelijke en zakelijke discussie op het internet te organiseren. Hierbij wordt telkens een door sceptici gebruikt argument uitgelicht door enkele uitgenodigde deskundigen aan weerszijde van het spectrum. Anderen zullen hierop alleen kunnen reageren via een moderator om de discussie overzichtelijk te houden en er zeker van te zijn dat deze ook professioneel blijft. Uiteindelijk zal een samenvatting worden gemaakt van alle discussies, met nadruk op waarover men het eens is, waarover niet, en wat de achterliggende oorzaak daarvan is. De uitkomsten van deze vijf activiteiten zal Nederland gebruiken wanneer ook de lidstaten van IPCC in oktober en november van dit jaar het tweede concept van het rapport kunnen becommentariëren.

Naar aanleiding van dit antwoord wordt door PBL en KNMI dinsdag aanstaande de website Climate Dialogue gelanceerd.

Positief is dat de discussie enkel en alleen gevoerd wordt door mensen die peer review hebben gepubliceerd.

Maar voor de rest vind ik het een bijzonder merkwaardig initiatief: het blogscepticisme zal niet aan bod komen omdat het nergens op stoelt, en de wetenschappelijke discussie wordt reeds in de literatuur gevoerd, waardoor de site op dit vlak weinig zal bijdragen.

Het is me dan ook niet helemaal duidelijk wat de Nederlandse overheid met dit initiatief wil bereiken. Het lijkt erop dat een hoop overheidsgeld wordt gespendeerd om de Neppérussen van deze wereld tevreden te houden, zonder dat die investering ook maar tot enige wetenschappelijke vooruitgang, of tot enig nieuw maatschappelijk inzicht zal leiden. De leek zal niet begrijpen wat er bediscussieerd wordt. Hooguit kan je verwachten dat klimaatsceptici de discussies over de minor-discussion points zullen uitvergroten in een poging daarmee de wetenschappelijke zekerheden waarover géén discussie bestaat mee te versmachten. Wat ze nu ook al doen, dus op dit vlak ook niets nieuws. Nogmaals: ik vind het een bijzonder merkwaardig initiatief.

Climate Dialogue in De Volkskrant

Maarten Keulemans schreef dit weekend een artikel (achter paywall) in de Volkskrant waarin de start van Climate Dialogue wordt aangekondigd. Het moet gezegd, het is een merkwaardig stukje.

Laten we even voorbijgaan aan de eigenaardigheid dat hij -om een project aan te kondigen dat een dialoog tussen wetenschappers en sceptici moet betekenen- hij enkel een klimaatscepticus (Marcel Crok) aan het woord laat, en daarbij ook nog eens foutief stelt dat de site mede een initiatief is van Crok (zoals hoger vermeld is het een initiatief van PBL en het KNMI).

Laten we ook maar even voorbij gaan aan het feit dat hij wél schrijft dat Marcel Crok's boek stelt dat er nog veel onzeker is over de oorzaak, omvang en de gevolgen van de klimaatverandering, maar daar niet bij aanvult dat Crok's boek één lange eenzijdige benadering is die bulkt van de cherrypicks, halve waarheden en regelrechte fouten (ja Marcel, ik heb je boek ondertussen gelezen), en zonder hierbij één woord te zeggen over de nochtans 40 pagina lange reeks kritische opmerkingen die het PBL dan ook had op het boek: Achtergrondinformatie bij De Staat van het Klimaat 2010.

Hierdoor geeft Keulemans (hopelijk ongewild) Crok meer gewicht dan hij wetenschappelijk verdient. Het is heus geen toeval dat Crok niet één wetenschappelijk artikel heeft geschreven. Maar bon.

Het echte probleem in het artikel zit m.i. de opsommingen onder het kopje 'splijtzwammen', waar hij een opsomming geeft van stellingen waar "sceptici" en "opwarmers" lijnrecht tegenover elkaar staan. Keulemans doet geen enkele poging om hierbij de correcte wetenschappelijke stand van zaken weer te geven, maar beperkt zich in zijn stuk enkel op een bijzonder merkwaardige vorm van "woord" en "wederwoord", wat uiteraard een belangrijk journalistiek basisprincipe is. Maar wel tevens een punt waar tegenwoordig al te veel journalisten halt houden, onder het mom 'we hebben toch lekker een debat gehad' (nee, ik verwijs hierbij niet expliciet naar Keulemans).

Woord en wederwoord mag dan wel een belangrijk journalistiek principe zijn, de échte taak van een journalist is natuurlijk om de lezer juiste informatie voor te schotelen, en daar schort het in dit stuk aan. Ophouden met te stellen dat Suske 'wiet' roept, en Wiske 'woe' roept mag geen eindpunt zijn. Een journalist heeft m.i. vervolgens de taak uit te vogelen wie het bij het rechte eind heeft. De lezer heeft m.i. het recht volledig en juist geïnformeerd te worden.

Keulemans geeft er in zijn stukje, en op Twitter, nochtans blijk van zich ervan bewust te zijn dat het klimaatdebat meer stellingen zijn dan de in het kaderstuk voorkomende simplistische opdeling in voor- en tegenstanders. En dat hij zich ervan bewust is dat de waarheid noch zwart noch wit is, maar dat wetenschappelijke realiteit zich op een ander vlak bevindt dan beide extremen. Het is een gemiste kans dat hij dat niet duidelijker in zijn stukje weergaf, want nu wekt hij de indruk dat er een discussie is op punten waar de wetenschap zelf robuust is, en waar de discussie zich ergens achter de komma bevindt.

Als ik eindredacteur van de Volkskrant was, had ik Keulemans zijn stukje terug naar afzender gestuurd met de opdracht het huiswerk volledig te maken, en zin van onzin te onderscheiden, zodat de lezer volledig geïnformeerd wordt en weet wat de wetenschap over de aangehaalde tegenstellingen zegt. Aangezien dat niet gebeurde, blijft een stukje over waarin de lezer op het verkeerde been wordt gezet en de wetenschap de verliezer is.

En dat vind ik jammer.

Dewever en Arnaert

N-VA-lid Brecht Arnaert, uiteraard weer een libertariër (zucht), postte recent op zijn facebookpagina dat hij niet wakker ligt van klimaatverandering en linkte daarbij naar twee filmpjes op De Groene Rekenkamer van Ton Begemann, die zeker niet foutenvrij zijn en die ik hier en hier al besprak (en waaruit bleek dat Begemann dus niet eens wist waar hij geweest was).

Wat vooral opvalt is echter het gegeven dat Arnaert's comments eerder een "gevoel" uitdrukken dan te getuigen van enige wetenschappelijke benadering. Altijd een slecht idee.

Arnaert: Is het u ook opgevallen dat na de val van de Muur het klimaatverhaal steeds populairder werd? De aarde zou opwarmen door het broeikaseffect, en dus moest de overheid maatregelen nemen om het milieu te beschermen. Moesten we ons niet meer onderwerpen aan het ideaal van de klassenloze samenleving, dan toch wel zeker aan het ideaal van de ongeschonden natuur. Wie kan daar nu tegen zijn?

De eerste experimenten rond warmtestralingen van John Tyndall vonden natuurlijk reeds plaats in het midden van de 19de eeuw, en Arrhenius was de eerste die uit die experimenten afleidde dat er wereldwijde invloed was. Dan zitten we nog steeds in de 19de eeuw.

Uiteraard is de kennis rondom de klimaatwetenschap enkel maar toegenomen, en de groeiende bezorgdheid leidde in 1988, dus nog voor de Val van de Muur, tot de oprichting van het IPCC. De oprichting van dit instituut gebeurde natuurlijk niet plotsklaps uit het niets, maar was een gevolg van een lange wetenschappelijke evolutie, waarbij bv. de conferentie in 1985 in Villach een belangrijke rol speelde in het rijpen van de geesten. Het is belangrijk eraan te herinneren dat de jaren '80 het tijdperk waren waarin de mens voor het eerst op politiek vlak besefte dat de menselijke invloed op de atmosfeer niet te negeren valt. Denk daarbij ook aan de problematiek van de ozonlaag, die in 1987, toevallig of niet, een jaar voor de oprichting van het IPCC leidde tot het akkoord van Montreal.

Al deze akkoorden waren gebaseerd op wetenschappelijke bevindigen, niet op een ecologisch ideaal. Dat is wat veel klimaat-pseudoskeptici wel eens over het hoofd zien: de hele klimaatdiscussie is een wetenschappelijke discussie. De wetten van Stefan-Boltzman of Kirchhoff zouden er heus niet anders uitzien als ze opgesteld werden door een communist of een nazi.

Overigens is het interessant op te merken dat Naomi Oreskes stelt dat klimaat-pseudoskepticisme zich nou net begon te manifesteren na de val van de Muur. De eerste klimaatskeptische artikels zouden de oppervlakte bereiken in 1989. Exact het jaar waarin de muur viel. Oreskes postuleert dat het net de anti-communistische krachten waren die, wegens het plotsklape gebrek aan een vijand, zich meteen stortten op de klimaatwetenschap en alles wat ze, net als Arnaert, als 'groen' percipiëren.
Of zoals de wiki-pagina van het - erg aanbevolen - boek Merchants of Doubt stelt:

The book states that Seitz, Singer, Nierenberg and Robert Jastrow were all fiercely anti-communist and they viewed government regulation as a step towards socialism and communism. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, they looked for another great threat to free market capitalism and found it in environmentalism. They feared that an over-reaction to environmental problems would lead to heavy-handed government intervention in the marketplace and intrusion into people's lives

Arnaert: Prof. Begemann, die mij een eerlijk verhaal lijkt te doen, gelooft er niet in. Hij bezocht het hoge Noorden meermaals, en laat boerenverstand werken waar intellectualisme het heeft laten afweten. De mens is veel minder verantwoordelijk voor mogelijke klimaatwijzigingen dan tot nog toe werd verspreid. In het filmpje legt hij uit waarom.

Zoals in mijn eerdere artikels al bleek (de foto's zijn helaas verdwenen in cyberspace), heeft Begemann geen enkele kennis van het terrein dat hij bezocht, maakt hij hierbij ronduit absurde claims (eskimo's die aan landbouw doen, alsjeblieft), en cherrypickt (allicht niet doelbewust) hij temperatuurtrends.

Arnaert: Maar wat interessanter is: Begemann vertelt ook waarom zoveel professoren dit zijn gaan beweren.

Begemann's claim dat klimaat-pseudoskeptici hun mond niet kunnen opendoen uit angst hun fondsen te verliezen wordt hier tegengesproken door Bas van Geel. En als je even rondsurft, zal je zien dat veel skeptici rechtstreeks verbonden zijn aan overheidsinstituten.

Arnaert: Sinds duidelijk werd dat de klassenloze samenleving niet kan werken, is er geen groot verhaal meer waaraan we ons allen moeten onderwerpen. Maar het ideaal van de ongeschonden natuur, dat heeft wel nog wervingskracht. Koste wat het kost moet dus bewezen worden dat de mens schuldig is: een verstoorder van een natuurlijk evenwicht.

Ook hier geeft Arnaert vooral weer te kennen hoe zijn wereldbeeld eruitziet. De klimaatdiscussie gaat niet over het handhaven van evenwichten maar over hoe de wereld eruit zal zien als het huidige, relatief stabiele klimaat in het holoceen, verandert. In feite is het een quasi zuiver economische discussie: hoeveel kost het de mensheid om zich aan te passen aan een veranderend klimaat ? Er komen uiteraard nog een aantal sociale en ecologische factoren bij te pas, maar de hoofdvraag is zuiver economisch, niet meer, niet minder.

Arnaert: Laat u niet vangen: groenen zijn ecologische marxisten. Het zijn meloenen. Groen van buiten en rood van binnen. Met dank aan Peter Visser, die mij attent maakte op het filmpje.

Tenzij Arnaert voluit voor complotdenken gaat en wil beweren dat iedere wetenschappelijke academie ter wereld enkel en alleen maar uit communisten bestaat, geeft deze slogan vooral Arnaert's wereldbeeld bloot. Of dat er toe doet is nog maar de vraag: het is in ieder geval irrelevant voor de klimaatdiscussie, want zoals hoger aangehaald laten wetenschappelijke wetten zich heus niet leiden door ideologie. Het verwerpen ervan, des te meer. Zie ook creationisme.

Arnaert: Wat een arrogantie van de mens om te denken dat hij het klimaat kan beïnvloeden. Klimaten veranderen, punt.

Uiteraard kan de invloed van de mens op de atmosfeer makkelijk gemeten worden, en dan blijkt dat de invloed van de mens duidelijk zichtbaar is :

Hoe groot onze planeet ook moge wezen, er is dus een duidelijk meetbare invloed op de samenstelling van de atmosfeer t.g.v. menselijke activiteiten. Dat heeft niets met arrogantie te maken, maar met keiharde wetenschap en het registreren van een realiteit.

Arnaert: Ik heb gezegd dat de politiek de wetenschap koloniseert door hun financiering van hen afhankelijk te maken. Prof. Begemann zegt zelf dat vooraanstaande wetenschappers die nu op emeritaat zijn, vrijuit spreken, en verklaren dat heel wat van het onderzoek niet wetenschappelijk is.

Een uitspraak die uiteraard getuigt van de nodige dosis paranoia.
Maar een bewering die je wel vaker hoort in libertarische kringen, maar hoe dat proces dan wel zou spelen heb ik nooit te horen gekregen. Zoals ik al eens opmerkte in mijn post over Frank Van Dun : Hoe het mogelijk is dat libertariërs die de overheid willen wegdenken, toch verbonden kunnen blijven aan overheidsinstellingen en universiteiten ? Dat is toch een zuiver toonbeeld dat er géén kolonossatie van de wetenschap gebeurt, anders waren die personen allang op het budget 'nul' gezet.

Arnaert: Dit is trouwens geen complottheorie: politiek zoekt altijd naar een legitimering van zijn macht. Vroeger was die legitimering het ideaal van de gelijkheid. Toen dat niet bleek te werken, moest een andere legitimering gezocht worden. Wat is hier complottheoretisch aan? Beweer ik dat er geheime genootschappen zijn die de opwarming van de aarde als hoax bekokstoofd hebben? Helemaal niet: deze onzin werd open en bloot verkondigd.

Er zijn genoeg politici die NIET ijveren voor het ideaal van gelijkheid. Basically gaat het hier uiteraard om de spanning tussen liberalisme en socialisme. Dat wetenschappers verschillende politieke strekkingen aanhangen, is iets waar te vaak te snel over wordt heengegaan in bepaalde kringen.

Arnaert: Het incident dat Prof. Begemann aanhaalt in verband met de ijsschots ter grootte van Californië die zogezegd afgekalfd was, en nadien een fout van de satelliet bleek te zijn. Nieuwsfeit één: breed in de media. Nieuwsfeit twee: verzwegen. Als daar geen bias in zit, dan weet ik het niet meer.

De media is bovenal ongeïnformeerd: hoeveel journalisten hebben ook maar enige wetenschappelijke achtergrond ? Juist ja. Overigens komen klimaat-pseudoskeptici onevenredig vaak aan bod in de mdia, terwijl ze in de wetenschappelijke literatuur vooral uitblinken door afwezigheid.
Die discrepantie toont aan dat de media inderdaad niet neutraal is. In pakweg de Nederlandse krant de Telegraaf zal je niet veel correcte informatie over klimaatverandering vinden, want die krant publiceert quasi enkel pseudoskeptische artikels. Als daar geen bias inzit, weet ik het niet meer. Ik hou Arnaert niet tegen een klachtenbrief naar de Telegraaf te sturen.

Arnaert: Het is best mogelijk dat de mens ecologische veranderingen veroorzaakt, en dus regenval door zijn toedoen op sommige plaatsen kan veranderen. (Zie Aral-meer). Het punt is: waarom zou dat ongerechtvaardigd zijn? Is de natuur iets waar we niet in mogen bewegen? Heeft de natuur, zijnde een omgeving zonder bewustzijn, rechten?

Deze alinea is voornamelijk interessant, omdat ze de hele problematiek van libertarisme en wereldwijde "milieu"problemen. Ik zet milieu tussen aanhalingstekens omdat, zoals hoger aangehaald, de klimaatproblematiek slechts in beperkte mate een milieuprobleem is.

Of natuur rechten heeft is lekker filosofisch interessant (hadden de dieren die in het Aralmeer leefden een bewustzijn? Hoe zit het met de belevingswaarde voor de verschillende indivisuen, elk met hun eigen subjectieve smaken en voorkeuren ?), maar voor de vissers aan het Aral-meer, ooit met 40.000, doet dat natuurlijk weinig ter zake. Die zijn gewoon hun job kwijt. Is dat gerechtvaardigd ? Of hebben ze recht op stabiliteit, met name hun job ?

Arnaert: Ik stelde ettelijke reacties geleden al dat het niet gaat om een complottheorie, maar om de nuchtere vaststelling dat politiek altijd op zoek is naar legitimering. Met de val van de muur kon de legitimering niet meer het grote Gelijkheidsideaal zijn, want dat heeft duidelijk gefaald, en dus moest naar een ander ideaal gezocht worden waar wij ons allen kunnen aan opofferen: het Ongeschondenheidsideaal, wat individuen opnieuw in krak dezelfde ideologische positie plaatst.

Arnaert toont met zijn posts, niet enkel de comments op klimaat, dat hij vooral tegen heel veel zaken tégen is.Neem het negativisme tegen al wat, in zijn ogen, links is weg, en zijn facebookwall is niet half zo vol meer. Misschien komt het Arnaert -cfr. de stelling van Oreskes- wel net goed uit een vijand te hebben waar hij tegen kan ageren ?

Het ongeschondenheidsideaal, dat allicht door bepaalde strekkingen wordt aangehangen, is echter compleet irrelevant voor de werkloze vissers van het Aralmeer. Die zijn gewoon hun job kwijt.

Arnaert: De enigen die hier schuld aan hebben zijn de overheden dat de wetgeving zo organiseren dat het goedkoper wordt om grondstoffen te consumeren, dan de arbeid hier te laten verrichten. Of vind je het normaal dat de garnalen die aan de Vlaamse kust gevangen worden overgevlogen worden naar Marokko, om ze daar te laten pellen, en teruggevlogen worden? Voor elke euro die ik jou zou betalen als werknemer, moet ik er als werkgever nog twee bijleggen. Het laten doen van die arbeid in een lageloonland is dus het meest morele wat je kan doen: het is immoreel om een systeem te voeden dat inherent exploitatief is.

In landen waar nauwelijks belastingen zijn, zijn de leefomstandigheden van arbeiders niet noodzakelijk beter. Werkgevers willen hun winst maximaliseren, punt.

Arnaert: Ja, arbeiders worden uitgebuit in onze samenleving, maar enkel en alleen omdat werkgevers daar door sociale wetgeving toe verplicht worden: pushen ze die arbeiders niet, dan kunnen ze hun belasting niet betalen.

In de vroege industriële revolutie was er géén of nauwelijks een sociale wetgeving. Ik zou het toch niet meteen als voorbeeld durven nemen als maatschappelijk model.

Arnaert: Of dacht je dat men in de horeca niet liever wat MEER personeel in dienst zou nemen?

De horeca wil vooral zijn winst maximaliseren, dus nee, ze gaan niet uit altruïsme meer personeel aanemen.

Arnaert: Dus: check eens hoe wetgeving vervuiling veroorzaakt. Je zult vaststellen dat het altijd neerkomt op een probleem van geschonden eigendomsrechten. Privatiseer de zee, en morgen is ze proper.

Je hoeft het helemaal niet op zee te gaan zoeken, kijk gewoon naar de atmosfeer. Privatiseer de atmosfeer, en ieder industrieel bedrijf moet morgen zijn deuren sluiten, onder druk van de omringende eigenaar die die troep niet in hun licht willen hebbens.

De facto is de atmosfeer boven land echter 'eigendom' van de staat. Maatregelen opgelegd door diezelfde staat, de eigenaar dus, worden echter in bepaalde kringen met hand en tand verworpen. Niet echt consequent me dunkt. En tekenend voor het probleem dat de filosofische stroming libertarisme heeft wanneer ze de toets moet aangaan met de werkelijkheid. Al te vaak wordt de werkelijkheid onder de bus gegooid om de filosofie overeind te houden.

Het Nederlandse Planbureau voor het Leefmilieu reageert hier op de grootste fouten in Rypke Zeilmaker’s recente artikel in het Parool. Noot: Zeilmaker beeert dat zijn artikel buiten zijn weten geredigeerd werd door de redactie, waardoor er extra fouten in het stuk zouden ingeslopen zijn.

Niet dat het veel uitmaakt, het blijft een erg incoherent stuk, en het doet de vraag rijzen waarom een krant: 1) het woord geeft aan iemand die –naar eigen zeggen (!)- niet echt verstand heeft van het onderwerp, 2) dat stuk dan niet tenminste heeft laten nalezen die er wél enig verstand van heeft.
Maxime Verhagen, de Nederlandse Minister van Economische Zaken, Landbouw en Innovatie heeft in de Nederlandse kamer dan weer een antwoord gegeven op de vragen van VVD-Leeghoofd René Leegte over een al evenmin foutenvrij stukje van Kees Le Pair op climategate.nl (nog steeds uw favoriete bron van desinformatie en gegil over communisten) waarin Le Pair stelde dat het netto-vermogen van windmolens lager is dan wordt beweerd.

Uiteraard is het rendement van windmolens compleet irelevant voor de klimaatwetenschap. De kritiek op windmolens van klimaatskeptici vloeit, net als de klimaatskepcis zelf, echter niet voort uit wetenschappelijke argumenten, maar uit een algemeen “anti-groen” gevoel, waain feiten moeten sneuvelen voor het wereldbeeld.

Tot slot heeft Henk Lankamp nog een aardig stukje waarin hij uitlegt dat de titel “IPCC expert reviewer”, zoals die gedragen wordt door o.a. Hans Labohm en Marcel Crok, vooral gebruikt wordt door mensen die géén enkele expertise hebben, en de titel dragen om het lekenpubliek te misleiden.

Just ran across this interesting 2006 overview by Elizabeth E. Smith on the work of tobacco lobby tool ARISE (Associates for Research in the Science of Enjoyment), a group stating ‘tobacco is good for you because it gives you pleasure.: ‘It’s interesting how few people die from smoking’
It’s good to remember some industries try to set up astroturf groups (or gives huge ammount of money to groups of people who are really confused) in a deliberate attempt to create controversy over a scientific subject to confuse the public.

Chemtrail burgemeester Peter Vereecke versus de rede

Een jaar geleden alweer blogde ik over de Peter Vereecke, voorzitter van de Belfort Groep een man die niet enkel klimaatwetenschap verwerpt, maar een resem complottheorieën omarmt, zoals chemtrails, gedwongen vaccinaties of de codex alimentarius conspiracy.

Daarenboven bestookte de man blijkbaar een hele hoop personen met ongewenste mails, zoals topambtenaren van het Vlaams Agentschap Zorg en Gezondheid, maar ook weermannen Frank Deboosere en Sabine Hagedoren.

Omdat hij enkele ambtenaren persoonlijk viseerde, werd klacht ingediend tegen Peter Vereecke bij het Parket van Gent, dat een psychiater en klinisch psycholoog heeft verzocht Vereecke aan een geestesonderzoek te onderwerpen, wat hij geweigerd heeft.

Zoals te voorspellen viel, ziet Vereecke zelf ziet er uiteraard een poging tot intimidatie in en vraagt hij minister Jo Vandeurzen om een onderhoud.

A few remarks on the last post on the blog of Jo Moreau (mind you, the original post of Jo is in French, a fact Newt Gingrich disagrees with.

if you don't mind, i'm going to answer in English, as it's easier for me. It's a bit late, so i'm gonna stick to some loose remarks.
I'm a little surprised the way you characterize my blog, but you're entitled to have your own opinion.
Yes in blogposts i have mentioned several times the amount of money several people received. To which you add "très imprécises ou exprimées au conditionnel", a fact i disagree with: i often have mentioned exact amounts of money, and have always provided a source for that. You do not 'accuse' people of receiving funding without having a source (and i have criticized people who do make such accusations).
The amount of money people receive matters, yet sometimes does not matter at the same time. As said on Lucia’s and Twitter, i think the Heartlandgate-affair is uninteresting, from the point of view a think thank paying people isn’t any new info, is it ? Yes, there are a few people in the climate debate i consider to be dishonest (and no, i will not give names, because i cannot ‘proof’ it) but that list of people is short, very short (10, maybe 20 people, not more).
All other sceptics, even the ones receiving money, i suppose to be honest, yet (of course) i consider them to be biased and wrong, an opinion that is based on science, not money.
As i have explained many times, i think the corporate money is given to people spreading a message favourable for companies, without automatically implying corruption, rather being a form of symbiosis. Nevertheless, i think it doesn’t harm to mention who received which amount of money, because the money can create a depencia-bias, as happened with the Dutch Edmund Burke Foundation, which spent more time in lobbying for the pharmaceutical industry than focussing on its initial goal: studying liberalism.
But the funding-problem gets fishy when someone denies receiving certain funding, while documents proof black on white the person DID receive funding. In that case personally I do get suspicious. Fred Singer did make statements about his funding which seem to be in conflict with reality
I take notice of your use of the phrase “climate orthodoxy”, though i will not hide i don’t like the use of such sloganesque meaningless phrases, being nothing more than an expression of emotion, rather than thought. I think such language is nothing but a tool to dehumanize a person and his/her position, and to avoid having to deal with facts, instead of emotion. Moreover, i’m pretty sure you will fail to translate the word to the concrete position i’m taking in the climate debate. It seems to be a strawman-argumentation.
Your remark a consensus is a political statement, not a scientific one isn’t entirely true. It takes some philosophy of science, but the fact there’s no such thing as a positive proof, the acceptance of a scientific theory depends –always!- on a consensus.

Baudet’s column is imho niet meer dan een schoolvoorbeeld van wat gebeurt als een leek het klimaatonderwerp probeert te coveren: hier en daar wordt een los feit opgepikt, maar de achtergrondkennis ontbreekt om die losse rafels op de juiste wijze aaneen te knopen.
Voorts ging deze week aardig wat aandacht uit naar twee ondermaatse krantenartikels, namelijk een stukje van de reeds veelvuldig gedescriteerde David Rose, en de zoveelste als open brief van een stelletje allang achterhaalde wetenschappers, waaronder de Nederlander Hendrik Tennekes..

Over the last twenty years politically-motivated think tanks and legal foundations, because they disliked certain scientific findings, have taken legal action against scientific institutions and individual scientists. In recent years, the legal attacks have intensified, especially against climate scientists. For the individual scientist these legal actions are a painful burden.

Therefore Scott Mandia and Joshua Wolfe launched the Climate Science Legal Defense Fund (CSLDF) so climate scientists would be able to protect themselves and their work from industry-funded legal attacks.

The climate science legal defense fund states it's three main focus points are:

Litigation: The Climate Science Defense Fund is taking an active interest in litigation. Currently several climate scientists have litigation in the courts. The Climate Science Defense Fund will play an active role in helping raise funds for their defense, serving as a resource in finding pro-bono representation, and providing support during difficult litigation proceedings.
Education: The Climate Science Defense Fund will work to educate the scientific community about their rights and their responsibilities with regard to legal issues surrounding their work.
Knowledge Bank: The Climate Science Defense Fund will serve as a clearinghouse for information related to legal actions taken against scientists. Our goal is to provide lawyers representing scientists with information about past cases and strategies.

Perry Officials Censored Climate Change Report

Kate Sheppard has a very interesting article on Mother Jones showing how Texas Officials, appointed by Rick Perry, altered a recent report on sea level rise, erasing all mentions of climate change. At the bottom, you can compare the original and altered document.

As a result, EVERY SINGLE scientist associated with the report demanded his/her name to be removed from the document.

UPDATE: The Guardian has more to say :

Andrea Morrow, a [Texas Gvt] spokeswoman said in an emailed statement. "Information was included in a report that we disagree with." She said Anderson's report had been "inconsistent with current agency policy"

Yep, that's really what she said. Reality is "inconsistent with the current agency policy".

The origin of think tanks

Think tanks surround politics today and are the very things that are supposed to generate new ideas. But if you go back and look at how they rose up - at who invented them and why - you discover they are not quite what they seem. That in reality they may have nothing to do with genuinely developing new ideas, but have become a branch of the PR industry whose aim is to do the very opposite - to endlessly prop up and reinforce today's accepted political wisdom.

John O'Sullivan: Look Ma, no brain!

John O'Sullivan is the driving force behind the physics-denying group "Slaying the Sky Dragon" (aka Principia Scientific International, chairman: Tim Ball), a group so deeply rooted in denialist Fantasia that even Christopher Monckton denounced their first book as unscientific nonsense.

O'Sullivan may not be the brightest bulb in the climate denialist sideshow, but he sure is well-connected and industrious. According to his LinkedIn entry, in 2010 he "established himself as the world's most popular Internet writer on the greenhouse gas theory of climate change (Google)", with highlights such as "Shock News: Disgraced Climategate Scientist Made Top UN Weatherman" (didn't notice the source was five years old), "Carbon Dioxide Not a Well Mixed Gas and Can’t Cause Global Warming" ("School Children Prove Carbon Dioxide is Heavier than Air"), or "Solar Ovens Prove Greenhouse Gas Theory is cooked" (don't even ask).

O'Sullivan Makes a List

O'Sullivan recently posted a list of "Fifty IPCC Experts Expos[ing] Washington Post Global Warming Lies". In it he proves that he is capable of cutting and pasting up to 50 names and quotes without having to resort to his, or anybody other's brain. Well done, John :)

He lists people that he somehow associates with the IPCC (he does not mention how), combined with quotes that in his mind demonstrate their criticism of the IPCC. Some of them worked on IPCC reports, and are quoted out of context; others are so-called "Expert Reviewers for the IPCC", which means they requested to look at the IPCC report before publication, which anybody interested in it can do. As you need no qualifications for being one, the title is only used by people trying to buy authority they don't have.

IPCC Expert Reviewers

Here are the "Expert Reviewers" on the list (those that use the "title" themselves are daggered):

O'Sullivan missed only one climate contrarian "Expert Reviewer" that I was able to find: Ross McKitrick, Steven McIntyre's economist sidekick. Good work, John :)

So that's fourteen. Most of the other people O'Sullivan lists are promoted as experts on the IPCC mostly because they contributed critical quotes that bolster his world view. I suspect he got many of them from mining Marc Morano's report More Than 1000 International Scientists Dissent Over Man-Made Global Warming Claims. But what about the handful of real IPCC contributors on the list?

The O'Sullitaj Chimera

Lučka Bogataj is an established Slovenian scientist working on climate issues, and contributed to IPCC AR4 Working Group II, "Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability". O'Sullivan quotes her:

Rising levels of airborne carbon dioxide don't cause global temperatures to rise.... temperature changed first and some 700 years later a change in aerial content of carbon dioxide followed.

The second part of this quote was compress-pasted from an earlier O'Sullivan post, where Bogataj said:

A detailed comparison of temperature data and the quantity of carbon dioxide captured in the ice shows, that sometimes it warmed up first and then the concentration of carbon dioxide increased, and sometimes vice versa, but on average the temperature changed first and some 700 years later a change in aerial content of carbon dioxide followed.

Wow, that's true! And forest fires, too, are sometimes from natural causes and sometimes due to arsonists. So it turns out that Dr. Bogataj is right in agreeing with established science.

But what about the first part of the new quote? It's actually a compress-pasted version of O'Sullivan's own words from the old post he started with

Dr. Lucka Kajfež Bogataj left cold clear water between herself and her former UN shipmates by declaring that rising levels of airborne carbon dioxide probably don’t cause global temperatures to rise.

Which is most likely the result of O'Sullivan misunderstanding the real Bogataj quote in the first place. Greenfyre's had some fun with the story back in November 2010.

Here's a quote by Andrew A. Lacis of NASA GISS:

The bottom line is that CO2 is absolutely, positively, and without question, the single most important greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. It acts very much like a control knob that determines the overall strength of the Earth’s greenhouse effect. Failure to control atmospheric CO2 is a bad way to run a business, and a surefire ticket to climatic disaster.

The quote run by O'Sullivan is a commentary on an early draft of the report, which was much improved in later revisions.

Mike Hulme issued clarifications after it became clear that his words were misinterpreted and lauded in the denialosphere.

Oliver Frauenfeld is quoted out of context too, as detailed by Deltoid back when Morano used the same quote.

Martin R. Manning was vice-chair of Working Group II. I could not find the source of the quote O'Sullivan attributes to him, and without the context it could just as likely refer to governments watering down scientific findings. Here's Manning talking about the pressing issues that have to be tackled on a warming planet. He also contributed to the 2008 Scientific American article "The Physical Science behind Climate Change", subtitled "Why are climatologists so highly confident that human activities are dangerously warming Earth?".

IPCC contributors really unconvinced of AGW

The list contains two metallurgists that participated in AR4: Philip Lloyd and Tom Tripp. What does a metallurgist know about climate variability? Not necessarily much, it turns out, even when he contributed to IPCC AR4 Working Group III, helping to estimate the greenhouse gas emissions from magnesium production operations.

John Christy is one of the more than 600 scientists that contributed to IPCC AR4 Working Group 1 (the one concerned with the actual physical climate science). In fact, together with his frequent collaborator Roy Spencer and Richard Lindzen (who also once was an IPCC contributor), he forms the trinity of established climate scientists that peddle climate science denial. He also sat on satellite temperature data for a decade (together with Spencer), claiming that the warming from the other scientists' datasets was faulty, until it was found that the error was in their measurements.

Rosa Compagnucci is a member of the IPCC Working Group II for the Chapter on Latin America, and specialist on the "El Niño" phenomenon. It seems that she thinks the global temperature change is due to changes in solar activity. It turns out it's not.

IPCC lead author John T. Everett (Fisheries, Polar Regions, Oceans and Coastal Zones) thinks the Earth might be cooling. It's not.

Richard Tol was an economic lead author for Working Group II. He is of the Bjørn Lomborg school of thought, that mitigation should only be approached when it's cheap enough.

Christopher Landsea, a contributing author and hurricane expert, says that global warming might not lead to more hurricanes. The science in this area is indeed not very conclusive yet, but it seems that they might not become more frequent, but stronger.

Aynsley Kellow, a contributing author on environmental policy, wants to tackle other greenhouse gasses first.

Harry F. Lins was IPCC co-chair during the first report (1990), and contributed to the second and third. The quote attributed to him by O'Sullivan is not his own words, but at least from the text of a 2009 petition to Barack Obama, organized by the fossil-fueled Cato Institute, which he signed together with a colorful mix of about one hundred others. But that's another story.

No Consensus?

What do we learn from this? Although, like mostly anything, the IPCC has its faults, it managed to produce a pretty solid report on the state of climate science, even when a huge and diverse group of people contributed to it, some of which don't understand all aspects of it, and some of which disagree for different reasons. How many? Considering more than 450 lead authors and more than 800 contributing authors were involved in the 2007 report (with more than 2500 Expert Reviewers), the fraction is somewhere clearly below the 3% of established climate scientists that disagree that global warming is mostly man-made and is going to be a problem. This won't stop people like O'Sullivan from gleefully pasting together lists of make-believe authorities; but it should stop people from listening to the newspaper clipping artists.

John O'Sullivan: Comic relief from the denialosphere

I must admit that I am, in a twisted way, a fan of John O'Sullivan's works; he holds a special place in my denier panorama, never ceasing to entertain with his antics, which he trumpets into the world with a childlike pride the size of a planet.

I just hope that the people that made him the world's most popular Internet writer on the greenhouse gas theory of climate change (Google) did so for the same reasons.

I know the subject has been dealt with extensively before on this blog, but still many people don't know the strategy of doubt. Therefore i'm happy to post this new interview with Naomi Oreskes, one of the authors of the highly recommended book Merchants of doubt, which explains how the broad organised attack on science works. h/t Tamino

ik voorspelde hier dat Rypke Zeilmaker nooit zou ingaan op het feit dat Fred Singer niet meer of niet minder dan gelogen heeft over zijn financiële banden met de fossiele brandstoffen-industrie en die voorspelling is uitgekomen .
Dat wetenschappelijk onderzoek gefinancierd wordt is een evidentie en dat, Exxon uitgezonderd, de petroleumindustrie beseft dat onderzoek een wezenlijk onderdeel is van vooruitgang vind ik wel net zo fijn. Dat een onderzoeker gefinancierd wordt betekent uiteraard nog niet automatisch dat die onderzoeker corrupt is.
Gekeken moet worden –moet ik dit nou echt nog neerpennen- naar wat er met die middelen wordt gedaan. En dan blijkt dat Singer’s werk er vooral uit bestaat wetenschap aan te vallen, in plaats van te zoeken naar vooruitgang.
Het feit dat Singer liegt over zijn financiering is daarbij veelbetekekend. Dat het Zeilmaker geen ene moer kan schelen dat Singer liegt al evenzeer.
Het PCCC publiceerde ondertussen al een antwoord op de belangrijkste fouten in Singer’s presentatie tijdens zijn bezoek aan het KNMI. Een video met de lezing in Brussel kan je hier vinden; Singer heeft zoals verwacht niets gezegd dat niet allang weerlegd is.
Ondertussen is Wolfgang Wagner, hoofdredacteur van Remote Sensing, opgestapt na de publicatie van Roy Spencer’s ondermaatse laatste worp en worden de resultaten van het interessante CLOUD-experiment op allerhande blogs gestrecht tot iets wat onmogelijk uit het onderzoek valt te concluderen. Business as usual dus.

The one where S. Fred Singer lies about his funding and is NOT coming to Belgium ?

Claes Johnson just announced S. Fred Singer will not be coming to Belgium during his European tour, after Belgian IPCC vice-chairman Jean-Pascal Van Ypersele contacted the organising Société Européenne des Ingénieurs et Industriels with this letter :

.La SEII et l'honnêteté scientifique Monsieur le Secrétaire général,

La SEII soutient-elle implicitement le déni climatique, à la veille du congrès mondial des ingénieurs à Genève consacré aux défis énergétiques (où j'aurai l'honneur de donner une "keynote lecture") ?
L'utilisation du papier à lettres de la SEII par votre administrateur M. Masson pour l'invitation ci-jointe le suggère malheureusement, malgré une phrase hypocrite pour indiquer que la SEII ne "sponsorise" pas l'événement.
Vous devez savoir que MM Fred Singer est une personne dont l'honnêteté scientifique laisse fortement à désirer. Ses activités de désinformation sont financées par les lobbies des combustibles fossiles (voir XXXXXXXXXXXXXX) , et il est scandaleux qu'une telle personne puisse être associée, de près ou de loin, à la SEII et à la Fondation universitaire.
Des collègues éminents m'ont écrit que M. Johnson ne valait pas mieux. Un de ses "textbooks" récents, où il parlait à tort et à travers des changements climatiques, publié par le Royal Institute of Technology (KTH, Suède), a dû être rétracté par ce dernier tellement il contenait d'erreurs.
Merci de me dire très rapidement quelles mesures la SEII compte prendre pour se distancier de cet "événement"? Je serais heureux également de savoir quel est le mandat de ce "think tank" de la SEII sur les changements climatiques que Mr Masson préside (alors que son CV n'est pas disponible sur le site de l'Université d'Antwerpen, et que je n'ai jamais entendu parler de ses compétences en matière de climat).

In short, Van Yp states Singer’s scientific honesty is lower than one would desire, and Singer gets funded by the fossil-fuel industry.
Singer responds :

Why am I not surprised by this disreputable action of this IPCC officer.After all, we know from Climategate emails that these people will go to any length to suppress scientific dissent. Even to libel and to use bald-faced lies.
Of course, I am not supported by fossil-fuel industry. That is complete nonsense and invention
My Europe visit is paid by the Ettore Majorana Foundation -- to give an invited talk at a climate conference in Erice. I am using the occasion to accept additional invitations to speak (without lecture fees) at the Univ of Hamburg, Imperial College, Univ of Paris - Jussieu, and of course at the KNMI in De Bilt. By happenstance I was also invited to address 100+ engineers in Zurich.
Our IPCC colleague van Yp also questions my honesty. Well now -- the IPCC has been using me as a scientific reviewer, I publish regularly in peer-reviewed journals and am an elected Fellow of several scientific societies. So there must be some who disagree with van Yp.

Singer is stating in his reply he’s not being supported by the fossil-fuel industry. Which simply is a lie.
Of course Dutch denialists like climategate.nl’s Rypke Zeilmaker are not pleased with the cancellation. But what they are not mentioning, and probably never will, is Singer’s lie.
Singer’s Astroturf group Science and Environment Policy Project received US$ 10.000 from Exxon in 1998 and 2000.
The +/- 20p NiPCC-report was worth US$ 143.000, through an intermediate source, as the industry isn’t stupid enough any more to fund directly (as they have to publish their funding). And of course this NiPCC report was complete nonsense.
Earlier in his career, when he was still a tobacco lobbyist, Singer received US$ 20.000 for a report trying to manufacture doubt on the relation between passive smoking and cancer. Many more fascinating documents on Singer”s lobby career can be found in the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library. Of course don’t expect the Dutch denialists to ever mention this library. Remember I got banned on De Dagelijkse Standaard when mentioning Labohm lied when telling he didn’t know about Singer’s funding. Getting too close to the source I guess.
Meanwhile, it seems the Singer & Johnson meeting will become a private meeting.

The S. Fred coming to Belgium

As you should know by know, S. Fred Singer is one of the most remarkable scientists alive. Remarkable, because he’s one of the most severe anti-science scientist alive, claiming science is wrong on the harmful effects of tobacco, asbestos, UV, climate change, … Well any subject you can think of really.
The SEPP-homepage mentions Singer will come to Belgium September 1-4. As Singer is 86, it might be the last chance the man spreading his political driven message of doubt. If you want to see anti-science at its best, i’d recommend to visit the talks he’s going to give. Do take a look at a presentation he gave a year ago or so, and notice just how embarrassing his message is.
Unfortunately, nor in Belgian media nor on Belgian internet-sites, i’m able to find any announcement of his visit. Anyone has an idea which place(s) he’s going to visit ???
